MinDA gathers media on Mindanao power

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), finding the role of media in the face of current power crisis in Mindanao, is hosting a Media Workshop on Power Industry and Renewable Energy Development today at Mallberfry Suites, this city.

This, in collaboration with the United States Aid for International Development (USAID) and Mindanews.

The one-day capability building activity is aimed at deepening the understanding of media on the power industry through accurate and detailed information on the

fundamentals of the Philippine power industry, Mindanao power situation and renewable energy development.

It also seeks to enhance capacities of media in the analysis of the power sector and its issues to aid them in news generation; and increase the number of stories on the power sector utilizing their enhanced skill in analyzing

power issues and concerns.

Earlier, MinDA Chair Luwalhati Antonino said that immediate solutions to the serious power deficit in Mindanao is underway.

Among the solutions are the reopening of the Iligan diesel power plant and the commissioning of two other power plants in the region.

Comelec liquor ban is extended

OZ AMIZ CIT Y - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has resolved to extend the period of the liquor ban from two to five days - from May 9 to May 13, Monday, Election Day. This decision was arrived at during the Feb. 26 meeting of the Comelec, spearheaded by Chair Sixto S. Brillantes Jr., and Commissioners Lucenito N. Tagle, Elia R. Yusoph, Christian Robert S. Lim, and Maria Gracia Cielo M. Padaca.

SP wants amendment of Helmet Law Comelec has decreed that the liquor ban shall be enforced effective on the day before the election, May 12 and on election day, May 13.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - As the peace and order drive in the city is being strengthened, the City Council has adopted a resolution requesting Congress of the Philippines to amend the National Helmet Law. Legislators are seeking

a prohibition on wearing of helmets that cover the whole face of motorcycle riders within the city proper.

The resolution was authored by Councilor Juan Sia, chair of the committee on commerce, who noted

that there has been a number of killing and shooting incidents in the city wherein the attackers were wearing full-face helmets.

According to Sia, most of the incidents have remained unsolved since the perpetrators could not be

recognized.

The councilor cited that some cities in the country have already enacted ordinances prohibiting the wearing of helmets by motorcyclists while driving within the city proper.

Sports medalists to receive financial incentives

CAGAYAN DE ORO’s athletes who bring home medals continue to receive financial incentives from the city government.

The City Council during its regular session Tuesday, presided over by Vice Mayor Caesar Ian E. Acenas, enacted an ordinance appropriating P195,000 to Team CdeO Arnis, who won medals during the 2nd Philippine National Games at Dumaguete City last May 25 to June 3, 2012 and Batang Pinoy 2012 National Championship held from December 5 to 8, 2012 at Iloilo City, with multiple awards from different categories.

The ordinance was endorsed by the committees on sports and youth development, on finance and ways and means and on laws and rules chaired by Councilors Sunshine Mae C. Obsioma, Simeon V. Licayan and Ramon G. Tabor, respectively.

Winning athletes who are entitled to the incentives are: John Franklin Dresser, Ric Marcelino Bongcaras, Sanie Mark Bongcaras, John Augustine Sumabong, Cherry Mae Jonson, Niña Allana Gae Tabor, Sam Jules Cantal and medalist /P5

PPDCI holds 8th Nat’l Palm Oil Congress in CDO April 18-19

THE Philippine Palmoil Development Council, Inc. (PPDCI) is taking the lead in holding the 8th National Palm Oil Congress on April 18-19, 2013, at the Xavier Sports and Country Club, Xavier Estates, Masterson Avenue, Cagayan de Oro City.

This was announced by PPCDI President Robertino Pizarro in a communiqué to the Sudaria Group of Publications, along with PPDCI Vice President Erwin Garcia.

With the theme, “Utilizing Unproductive Lands and Promoting Economic Stability Thru Investments in the Palm Oil Industry,” the 8th National Palmoil Congress ushers in updates on the Philippine palm oil industry, development initiatives, technological advances, banking support, local and international trends and prospects, among others, Pizarro said.

In support to the palm oil congress are the Local Government of Cagayan de Oro, A Brown Energy and Resources Development, Inc. (ABERDI), API Group of

Companies, Kenram Industrial Development, Inc. (KIDI), Filipinas Palmoil Plantation, Inc. (FPPI), Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP), Department of Agriculture (DA) and other major industry players, with the support from the Department of Trade and Industry, Regional Board of Investments, Philippine Coconut Authority-PODO, Department of Tourism, Department of Land Reform, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and other stakeholders.

PPDCI announced in its website that the Philippines is now eyeing to further develop the local palm-oil industry starting with the survey of farmlands suitable to palmoil plantations in Bukidnon.

This was disclosed by Jesus Arranza, member of the Philippine Coconut Authority’s (PCA) governing board and president and chief executive officer of the CIIF Oil Mills Group earlier.

The PCA is set to conduct a topographic survey of around 100,000 hectares of farmlands in Bukidnon. This way, we have something

to show investors in terms of where they can locate, Arranza’s statement in the PPDCI website read.

Arranza said the survey is part of a program approved by the PCA three months ago. He, however, could not say how much money was allocated to the initiative.

The CIIF official said he is willing to join efforts that encourage investors, particularly Malaysians and Indonesians to locate in the Philippines.

In a previous report released by the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) in 2004, of the 304,350 hectares of land suitable for palmoil plantation in Mindanao, only 20,000 hectares has been used by the industry, PPDCI said.

It said that Medco noted that Mindanao, particularly Caraga Region, has the highest potential for the palm-oil industry since it is one of the most suitable areas for palm-oil plantation due to good quality of soil type and fair weather conditions.

In its report posted over PPDCI website, Medco noted that palm oil is considered as the world’s most productive oil because its versatile composition is maximized not only for edible oils but also in making food, chemical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.

Citing a study published by the University of Asia and the Pacific, Medco said palm oil’s domestic demand will continue to increase five percent a year in the next 10 years up to 2020.

In a report posted on its web site, the Department of Agriculture’s Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service noted that the government can consider offering special long-term financing for palm oil, with a seven-year grace period, and duty-free importation of planting materials and farm equipment to entice more players in the local palm-oil industry.

the skeds of early morning and late evening flights which would be cancelled if the sunrise-sunset operating hours of Laguindingan get into play now.

Or, why not run the early morning and late night (that is, before 6AM and after 6PM) flights at Lumbia and the “Visual Flight Rules” flights at Laguindingan? Of course, that could never happen because it’s just plain stupid to have two airports within minutes of each other operating in the same area.

Yup, plain stupid, just like opening an airport without instruments operating under “Visual Flight Rules” when you have a nearby one still night capable of doing just that and it’s only another six months till the instruments are installed.

Bakit ba talaga, Kuyang? What’s the real deal here?

LaSur candidates vow for peaceful, clean polls

MARAWI City - Candidates for congressional, gubernatorial, mayoralty and other local posts in the entire province have vowed to help the Commission on Elections (Comelec) administer peaceful and honest elections this May. They manifested their

commitment for peaceful and clean polls by forging a covenant during the Lanao del Sur Stakeholders Conference for Peaceful, Free and Fair 2013 Elections last March 11.

By signing the covenant, they pledged not to buy votes and not to use force to impede voters to exercise their rights to choose. The

also committed to conduct the campaign in accordance with the law and participate in candidates forum called by non-partisan groups in the community.

They also agreed to take responsibility should one of their supporters or bodyguards is proven to have violated Comelec Resolutions 9561-A and 9608

The covenant signing was organized by the Consortium on Electoral Reforms (CER) with the support of the Comelec, Philippine National Police,

Philippine Army, and Lanao Civil Society Organizations.

Also present were candidates for the positions of regional governor, vicegovernor and legislative assembly in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) who also inked a separate covenant for peaceful and clean polls.

At the Zamboanga Power Summit, she said “the Iligan diesel power plant, which has a full generating capacity of 100 megawatts, will significantly ease up Mindanao’s current daily power deficit of 100-300 megawatts.”

Antonino explained that the Iligan diesel power plant is expected to resume operations by next month and will start generating an initial of 20 megawatts.

It is expected to achieve full restoration by the end of the year.

She added that two more power plants, namely the 15-megawatt diesel power plant of by the Mapalad Energy Generating Corporation (MEGC), and the 15-megawatt Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) or bunker fuel peaking plant of the EEI Power Corporation will add 30 megawatts of power in Mindanao.

Meanwhile the Department of Energy (DOE) disclosed that power demand and supply outlook for Mindanao this year will peak at 1,484 megawatts while its power plants can only supply estimated 1,181 megawatts.

DAR-10 celebrates Women’s Month with tree planting, outreach, livelihood

CAGAYAN DE ORO –In celebration of the Women’s Month this year, the Department of Agrarian ReformRegional Office 10 held a tree-planting activity on March 15 in Malasag, a reforestation area in this city.

DAR-10 Regional Director Felix Aguhob together with Asst. With the enthusiasm shown by the DAR-10 personnel, Mennen Tubiano, Regional Chapter President of DAR Ladies Association (DARLA) that spearheaded the series of activity for the month-long celebration, hopes to plant more trees in the future.

On March 19, some DARLA officers also visited MALISA Home in Jampason, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental. Established by the German Doctors, a humanitarian organization based in Frankfurt, Germany, MALISA Home takes care of girls who are victims of rape and trafficking.

he time of the visit, 17 girls with ages ranging from 9 to 20 from different places in Mindanao have found refuge in the so-called “home away from home”.

The DARLA brought 3 big water containers to the facility and plans to bring more donations within the month.

Meanwhile, in order to provide the DAR-10 employees with the opportunity to earn additional income, DARLA also tapped the Xavier University Food Technology Center to conduct a hands-on training on meat processing. The participants provided their own ingredients during the one-day activity.
