Cops arrest firearm holders, shabu carriers

CAMP Alagar, Cagayan de Oro City – Operatives of Stations 4 and 5 of the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) have arrested, March 5, two persons in possession of one hand grenade, two caliber .45 pistols and sachets of ‘shabu’.

Nabbed were Abu Sahid Dimala, with no specific address; and a 17-year old person, whose

identify is withheld.

This, as P/Chief Supt. Catalino B. Rodriguez Jr., director of Police Regional Office (PRO-10), ordered the doubling of police operations following the killing of two policemen in Iligan City and even before the noise barrage staged by students of Xavier University.

He also ordered the deployment of 40 police officers each in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. The augmentation forces came from the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB).

The move, he said, will also be effected in the provinces, as Holy Week approaches. cops /P5

Gun ban nets 5 firearms, 63 ammos

OROQUIETA City - Five firearms and 63 ammunitions were confiscated by the Misamis Occidental Provincial Police Office (MOPPO) relative to the implementation of the May 13, 2013 election gun ban, as of Feb. 22, this year.

This was reported during the recent meeting of the Joint Provincial Security Control Center (JPSCC) by P/Sr. Supt. Raul A. Benitez, MOPPO acting director.

“Four of these firearms with 61 ammos were confiscated in Don Victoriano town, resulting

in the arrest of one person, while the other firearm with two ammos was confiscated in Tangub City, also resulting in the arrest of another person,” he said.

part of the 2.5-hectare farm owned by the city is situated at Zone 4, Barangay San Simon.

The idea aims to provide the farmers with technical and cultural management support on crop, livestock and fishery production, according to Organic Agriculture Focal Person Virgillo Derequito.

He explained that Section 22 of the Implementing Rules and Regulation (IRR) of RA 10008, otherwise known as Organic Agriculture Act of 2010, specifically mandates the establish-

ment of communitybased Organic learning and Training Center as component of research and development and extension services.

This will reportedly spearheaded the integrated program to develop, promote and propagate organic agriculture to the grassroots communities.

According to Mr. Derequito, there is a compelling need to establish a local learning center that will provide the impetus and dynamism to agriculture extension workers of the

City Agriculture Office, and provide an accessible and cheap venue for training of local and transient farmers on the best organic crop and livestock management practices.

The proposed Organic Agriculture Training and Demonstration Center will qualify and satisfy the minimum requirements of proximity, accessibility, ownership and existence of structures and amenities allowing for the conduct of trainings, seminars and workshops for farmers.

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin - Big, fluffy, blue-gray eyed hawk-owls were sighted by researchers in this volcanic island paradise at the northern tip of Mindanao.

It is the only one of its kind.

At night, it gives a long solo hoot that builds in intensity, with a distinctive low growling tone to attract mates or defend their territory.

Pairs of these owls often do short barking duets (rapid yapping) that always starts with a growl.

Recordings and observations made by scientists from the Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation confirm the uniqueness of its attributes when compared to other hawkowl population, not even those found in other parts Mindanao.

Researchers noted a consistent disparity in plumage and measurements, but despite this confusing physical resemblance, variability, and vocal differences, they said these only confirm that this is a new specie.

In some published interviews with the authors, they conveyed their amazement on the differences in vocalization. Experts said the owls do not learn their song; it is genetically wired in their DNA. As such, this bird now finds its place in the global avian diversity levels, now named as Ninox leventisi Camiguin or the Camiguin Hawk-Owl, together with new owl specie also found in Cebu.

Other owl species unveiled by a team of local and international experts includes the Luzon hawk-owl (scientific name Ninox philippensis), Mindor hawk-owl (Ninox mindorensis), the Romblon hawk-owl (Ninox spilonata), the Mindanao hawkowl (Ninox spilocephala), the Sulo hawk-owl (Ninox reyi), Cebu hawk-owl (Ninox rumseyi) and new sub- specie of Romblon hawk-owl named (Ninox spilonata fisheri).

The lead author of this taxonomy review of the Philippine Hawk-Owls is Pamela Rasmussen, together with other co-authors of this scientific initiative with a team of American, British and Filipino scientistsDesmond Allen, Nigel Collar, Bram Demeulemeseester, Robert Hutchinson, Robert Kennedy, Frank Lambert, Liza Marie Paguntalan, and Philip Godfrey Jakosalem.

Camiguin Protected Area Superintendent and Forest Management Services Chief, Roberto S. Rufino on the other hand said, further studies on the owl’s habitat and conservation is now on-going.

These owls have been sighted in Sitio Pamahawan, Barangay Pandan, a site covered under the Mt. Timpoong Protected Area and often frequented by researchers who want to explore the richness of the mountain’s biological biodiversity.

Meanwhile, the province is set to launch the discovery of the Camiguin Hawk-Owl to the public on March 9, in time for the Mt. Timpoong-Hibok-Hibok Protected Area 9th Anniversary celebration.

To date, the Camiguin Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) has entered into a partnership agreement with the Mindanao State University (MSU) Iligan

Institute of Technology for the conduct of another research project the seeks to collect information on the population and ecology of Camiguin endemic species, such as, the Camiguin Hawk-Owl, Camiguin Narrow-Mouthed Frog, and other species.

There was a man who was the owner of the only hair salon in his little town.

He cut and styled the hair of almost everybody in town and his business was quite successful. Then, a big modern hair salon moved to his town right across the street from his little shop. This new, big salon advertised in the newspapers and posted signs all over town that read: “$6 haircuts! Everything for only $6!”

Soon almost all his customers began going to the new salon across the street for $6 haircuts. The owner

of the old hair salon knew he could never afford to beat the big new salon’s price of only $6. But then he thought of a way to turn things around and win his customers and business back. He had a local sign company paint him a big sign which he put in front of his hair salon. It read: “We FIX $6 haircuts!”

We all have problems and go through tough times.

Coco sugar, the healthy sweetener

Everyone can now enjoy sweets without feeling guilty of taking on ‘too much’ sugar.

Coco sugar is one of the most sought after products for those who seek to live healthy these days.

Readily available and currently produced in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental under the Linabu Agrarian Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LAMPCO), Coco sugar is a very good alternative to the current white/refined/ brown sugar in the market.

Irwin Jayson Jamaca, Trade and Industry Development Specialist of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Barangay Linabu was identified as one of the largest producers of coconut in the east of Misamis Oriental.

Because of this, the Philippine Coconut Authority gave a series of trainings on the production of coco sugar.

Workers may now work harder CAGAYAN de Oro City - The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) in Northern Mindanao said the implementation of the two-tiered wage system will motivate workers to work harder and above par.

RTWPB 10 Secretary Estrella Pahalla said in a media forum Monday that the new scheme which highlights productivity and performance in wage fixing will result to improvements in workers’ productivity.

The two-tiered wage system consists of a fixed “floor or minimum wage” and a flexible wage based on the productivity of the worker and the performance of the enterprises and industry.

She said the first component is mandatory to protect vulnerable workers from undue low wages. It will be issued as a wage order and is set higher than the family poverty threshold to ensure that it meets the basic needs of workers and their families.

However, it should not exceed the average wage or the capacity of employers to pay.

The second component, which is voluntary, is an enterprise productivity incentive scheme over and above the mandatory floor or minimum wage. The RTWPBs will issue advisories as reference of workers and enterprises in the implementation of productivity incentives scheme.

Pahalla said the twotiered wage system is the

product of studies, observations and a series of consultations led by the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC).

She added that it is in response to the President’s 22-point labor and employment agenda to protect

Xavier Ecoville participates in World Read Aloud Day 2013 By: Xyla Mercedita E. Gualberto

Reading books to children bring them to a world without limits. It gives them a sense of appreciation for words, education and the medium used-books. In celebration of the World Read Aloud Day 2013, Xavier Ecoville, the Xavier University-led resettlement community for Sendong survivors in Brgy.

Lumbia organized a storytelling session for over 70 children aged 3-6. The Xavier Ecoville staff gave a brief introduction about the World Read Aloud Day, following it with an action song to jumpstart the activity. Small groups were formed according to the children’s ages.

The storytellers prepared books and props appropriate for the children’s level of comprehension. This activity aimed to promote literacy and book appreciation among the Xavier Ecoville children.
