Multi-sector group calls : Hoops, pwera kampanya!!! stop ‘golden’ rice trade By Mark A. Cervantes

A nationwide movement of NGOs, schools, religious groups, farmers, environmentalists, artists and indigenous peoples is urging government to stop releasing golden rice due to health and environmental risks, as well as violations of other constitutional rights. “We will be exposing a very high number of Filipino people to these unnecessary risks, since 89% of 55 million Filipinos eat rice, and 12M Filipino farmers depend on rice farming for livelihood,” Normita Ignacio, executive director of the South

East Asian Regional Initiatives for Community Empowerment (SEARICE). SEARICE is part of the broad movement opposing for the commercialization of Golden Rice. The government has not conducted any independent tests to determine the effect of golden rice to the Filipino’s health and environment, Ignacio said. She added that recent developments in Europe have also discovered the existence of the ‘cauliflower virus’ in the ordinary gene sequence of GMOs, which poses dangerous health risks to humans; and prevents the plant to express resistance to pests and

diseases. “The discovery of the cauliflower virus in December 2012, has confirmed civil society arguments that GMOs are unhealthy and destroys the environment,” Ignacio said. Golden rice was infused with bacteria to express vitamin A, but Ignacio said it does not cure Vitamin A deficiency or VAD. “VAD can be cured by a balanced diet, not from rice alone. A balanced diet can only be obtained from a diversity of nutritious foods on the dining table, because for the human body to make use of vitamin A, it must have soluble golden /P5

CAGAYAN de Oro City – Hukom sa Korte Suprema… ‘walay early campaigning’. Kini nga reminder gipalanog ni City Election Officer Alile A. Ramirez tumong ngadto sa tanang local candidates ning dakbayan. “Dili unta ta mangampanya kay wala pa may actual nga local campaign period,” awhag ni Atty. Ramirez.
