OZAMIZ City - President Benigno S. Aquino III has declared February 25, this year, EDSA People Power Revolution Anniversary (PPRA) Day, as a special holiday for all schools, nationwide.

The day is among the 17 holidays of the year that are

enumerated in Presidential Proclamation (PP) No. 459, of which 10 are regular holidays, six are special non-working days and one special holiday, Feb. 25, to be observed by the schools only.

“The EDSA People Power Revolution, which restored and ushered in political, social and economic reforms

in the country, serves as an inspiration to Filipinos everywhere, as a nation and as a people,” the President said.

Meanwhile, the 10 regular holidays of the year are January 1, New Year’s Day; March 28, Maundy Thursday; March 29, Good Friday; April 9, Araw ng Kagitingan; May 1, Labor Day;

LIGAN City - The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWD), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) have launched a joint operation against the reported green card scam victimizing the city’s Sendong survivors.

This, after City Councilor Providencio Abragan Jr., chair of the city council committee on police matters, was informed that the ‘scam’ is being perpetrated right at the heart of the city, specifically in a certain private office along Aguinaldo Street.

Accordingly, the ‘scam’ involves the selling of green cards in exchange for houses at the city relocation areas.

“The home-based Sendong survivors are the usual target victims,” he said even as he cautioned the people not to fall prey into this type of scam.

Bukidnon barangays bag Green Banner award

MARAMAG, Bukidnon - Three barangays of this municipality bagged the 2012 Green Banner Award during the regional nutri-

tion awarding ceremony in Cagayan de Oro City.

The three, Danggawan, North Poblacion and Panalsalan, topped due to the effective and efficient implementation of its Ba-

rangay Plan of Action for Nutrition.

Mayor Alicia P. Resus said this is the first in history that Maramag barangays excelled in the regional competition in terms of

Aggie dept. commits in becoming responsible rice consumers “Sapat na Bigas, Kaya ng Pinas” – this is the Department of Agriculture’s battlecry as it leads the celebration of the 2013 National Year of Rice (NYR) with rice self-sufficiency as its core value.

In support to this campaign, the DA-Northern Mindanao (Region 10) led

by Regional Executive Director Lealyn A. Ramos (1st row, extreme right) has recently included the recitation of the Panatang Makapalay (Pledge of Rice)

during the office’s Monday flag raising ceremony on February 11, 2013. Its key message highlights responsible rice consumption which can be achieved by consuming just the right amount of rice and trying alternative food staples for better health at the same time reducing rice wastage.

Such is anticipated if the farmer-producers, consuming public and the policymakers work together. As the DA-employees serve as the frontliners in the

CAGAYAN de Oro City – Councilors Simeon V. Licayan and Ian Mark Q. Nacaya are recipients of certificates of recognition from the Philippine Councilors League (PCL).

Accordingly, the recognition was grounded on their selfless dedication and commitment to the city’s constituents for the past nine years.

Councilor and PCL National Secretary General Ramon G. Tabor received the certificates for the

two councilors during the awarding ceremony recently in Davao City.

He formally turned the awards over to Councilor Licayan and Councilor Barba during the City Council regular session.

Many years ago, politics in the Philippines was an ordinary affair of the people.

The matter consisted of just the politicians visiting the places within their territory, hold meetings, present issues to the public in a very cordial way.

There was no attack in speeches, there was no radio and televisions stations then just few newspapers.

Candidates have printed advertisements with their pictures on them and they distribute them to the public.

There was no music, political jingles or anything of sorts on the campaign trails.

Meetings were usually held in the evening and only

in municipalities. Candidates never visited the barangays.

There was no organizations of sort and they just shake the hands of people and deliver speeches.

Political campaigns were quiet and politicians had to perspire. There were no streamers, sample ballots, and other political paraphernalia.

Campaigners from all parties had to walk to distribute political advertisements.

It was hard work throughout and indeed politicians are determined individuals who are sincerely willing to serve.

Many of the candidates were innocent people, honest, and never presented lies to the public.

BEN EMATA JR. The general electorates too were honest and never thought of money or favor from the politicians.

During elections day, they go straight to the polling places to cast their vote after which go back to their homes

and wait for the counting in the evening.

There was no vote-buying or smear campaign. Voters used their honest conscience to vote for people. They vote for the best candidates.

Elections were clean and true and the candidates are running for service and nothing else.

There was no political camps or headquarters. There were no large streamers hanging across the streets.

Political leaders help their candidates voluntarily. There were few motor vehicle used in the campaign.

It was a real election and every vote was a true vote politics /P5

direct from the heart of voters. Both candidates and the pubic were just so innocent about elections.

Many do not even mind what is happening around or asking about the kind of people the candidates were.

They rarely speak about the politics that were ongoing.

People were interested more in their livelihood or work somewhere and just do not care the political affair.

The best candidates usually come out. They serve the people with dedication and love. There was no corruption then, thievery of public funds.

Real projects come out and people were enjoying the real service of the government. It was beautiful. It was real and honest politics.

Everyone was honest about it. The exercise was never

tainted with malice or dishonor. To be a leader during those days is a great pride and honors.

Elections today are far more noisy, loaded with personal attacks, speeches of lies and lies and the electorates are just puzzled or lost in the wilderness of noise and cheating.

Money now flows like rivers. Many voters never go to the precincts to vote unless paid for by the candidates.

Some voters are paid by all the candidates. The electorates never go to the precincts unless paid for their votes.

Many of our politicians now are just liars and whenever possible would cheat. Modern day politics have changed the face and attitude of the electorates. (ben-emata.com)
