MEMBER countries of the Brunei Darussalam Indonesia Malaysia the Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) are strengthening initiatives to achieve food self-sufficiency within the economic sub-region by 2016, in a bid to become the food basket of ASEAN and the rest of Asia.

Joint initiatives aimed at securing food self-sufficiency will be forged by the member-countries this week following the two-day BIMP-EAGA agribusiness meeting that kicked off in Palawan, Tuesday.

“Food security is among BIMP-EAGA’s top priorities and we are seeing the potentials of the sub-region

in becoming as the food basket of the ASEAN or perhaps the rest of Asia,” said Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) chair Luwalhati Antonino.

She added that for BIMPEAGA member-countries to achieve this goal, they must intensify efforts geared towards developing further the region’s agriculture and fishery production through joint-venture agreements and by strengthening food industry research and development.

Police hot on the trail of robbery suspects in CDO

Just last year, the PLGU and the National Center for Mental Health also forged a memorandum of agreement for a regular bi-yearly visits and consultation with the patients suffering of mental illness.

The province is likewise working on the establishment of a satellite mental hospital, which will be erected inside the compound of the Catarman District Hospital.

CBRP coordinator for Camiguin Marydel F. Credo, meanwhile, explained that in community based rehabilitation, disability is categorized into various forms which includes mental health, psycho-social learning disability, orthopedic, hearing or speech impairment and multiple disability where stroke patients are also counted in.

The CBR focuses on enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families with the support of the communities and representatives of the appropriate health, education, vocational and social sectors.

Concert for a cause granted tax exemption

40 giant puppets to add attraction to Leyte’s Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals

By Pearl Lena TACLOBAN CITY -- Forty giant puppets will parade at the thoroughfares of Tacloban City to give additional attraction to the PintadosKasadyaan Festival of Festivals here this June 29.

Palo Mayor Remedios L. Petilla who at the same time is the chairperson of this year’s major tourism event in Leyte said that they won’t be part of the competition of festivals instead their puppets will be joining the parade and thereafter will perform onstage.

The giant puppets represent the characters of tourism attractions in Palo that include “Pamalandong Patron ha Palo,” “Pagbalik ha Palo,” and “Pasko ha Palo.”

“The characters of these three big events in Palo will be portrayed by way of giant puppets,” she said.

DAVAO City--Industry movers in the tourism industry cluster are now gearing up for the upcoming “Kadayawan” Festival in this city scheduled in August, according to Mary “Baby” Montemayor, chair of the Davao Region Tourism Council.

In her recent report to consultants of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Montemayor said several of the projects and activities lined up this year by the tourism industry cluster had already been accomplished.

“We’ll continue to join other activities in the region that attract domestic and foreign visitors to Davao,” Montemayor told the JICA consultants during the recent monitoring meeting at the Department of Trade and Industry

(DTI) regional office.

One of the biggest events that was participated actively by the tourism industry here was the recently-concluded MICE Conference which drew hundreds of delegates from various Asian countries as well as North America and Europe.

Held at the new SMX Convention Center in Lanang this city, the event gathered top executives of tourism organizations, global hotels, travel agencies worldwide, event organizers, global airlines, and tourism councils from different countries.

Montemayor said the Davao region’s tourism booth during the event was “the most visited booth” which received hundreds of inquiries about travel destinations, tour spots and the

unique tribal handicrafts and accessories found in the region.

Bracing for an avalanche of domestic and foreign visitors coming to Davao for the annual Kadayawan Festival, the tourism industry cluster will set up again the tribal crafts booth that had been attracting tourists, visitors as well as tribal craft buyers to this city.

“Many buyers are fascinated by the handmade crafts made by our various ethnic tribes in Davao,” Montemayor said.

The tourism industry cluster is also coordinating with the coconut industry cluster whose members are also making various handicrafts, hand bags, and fashion accessories made of coconut shell and coco fiber. (PNA)

PCG intensifies inspection of vessels in Bacolod port BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has intensified its inspection of both cargo and passenger vessels traveling to and from Bacolod City starting Monday.

Lt. Commander Glenn Daraug of PCG-Bacolod stressed that the mandatory pre-departure inspection is for the safety of crew and passengers of the vessels.

Daraug pointed out this kind of pro-active measure must be done strictly to prevent any untoward incident like what happened to MV St. Gregory the Great over the weekend.

The ill-fated ship nearly capsized after it suffered a hole in its hull while navigating Iloilo Straight on June 15.

Sea water submerged its engine compartment but, fortunately, its 360 passengers arrived at Fort San Pedro Iloilo City safely.

A day prior to the incident, a roll-on roll-off (RORO) ship sank at Burias Straight off the coast of Masbate province.

Daraug said strict predeparture inspection must ensure that the ships are fit to sail especially this rainy season when monsoon rain continue to affect the region.

Daraug warned that they will file appropriate charges against the owner of any shipping lines who fail to meet their standards. (PNA)

13 die, 14 missing DPWH plan to cut 651 trees along in Nepal due to national road in Naga City opposed floods and landslides KATHMANDU -- A total of 13 people lost their lives and 14 have gone missing due to landslides and floods triggered by heavy rainfall in different parts of Nepal on Tuesday evening, police said.

With the beginning of monsoon season, the country is receiving heavy rainfall the past few days, causing landslides, floods and houses to collapse at different parts of the country.

Nepal Police Spokesperson Keshav Adhikari told Xinhua that 13 people have been confirmed dead in Dailekh, Baitadi and Achham, the mid and far-west hill districts of Nepal.

Seven members of a single family were killed after their house collapsed on Monday night due to landslides at Malika VDC-2 in Dailekh district. Four people have been killed at Siddheshwor VDC of Baitadi district when a landslide swept their house the same night. Similarly,

two people died at Kuntibandali village of Achham when a landslide hit their houses while they were sleeping.

Meanwhile, 14 people have been reported missing as they were washed away by the flood in Sannigad River in Kalikot district, the police said. Moreover, many houses along with two bridges over the river have also been washed away.

The district headquarters of Darchula in the north west Nepal is in panic as swollen Mahakali River intruded into the small town Sunday night. The Mahakali river bordering India has swept away 50 houses and displaced 1,500 people, the police said.

Similarly, 1,500 houses have been inundated in Bardiya District due to the floods in the Karnali River. Around 700 families have been displaced due to flood in Sonaha, Murgarwa of Daulatpur VDC in Rajpur Tappu of Bardiya district.

Saikol said the forest products that they will donate to DepEd and DSWD are part of the estimated 300,000 bd.ft. of illegally-cut lumber and logs that were recovered by government troops on March 17 following a series of operations at an illegal logging area in Barangay Kabulnan, Bagumbayan town in Sultan Kudarat.

He said the illegally-cut forest products, which were valued at P13.5 million, were found stockpiled in Sitio Salatan in Barangay Kabulnan and were believed to have been sawn from trees coming from the Industrial Forest Management Agree-

NAGA City-- Camarines Sur -- A total of 651 old and giant trees lining the national road in this city will be cut once the road widening project of the Department of Public Works and Highways starts soon.

DPWH Regional Director Danilo Dequito said there is a need to turn the affected road into four lanes, citing the volume of vehicles passing the area daily.

Dequito said the additional lanes on both sides of the road cannot be done without cutting the trees.

In the inventory conducted by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, CENRO chief Oscar Orozco said 651 old and big trees will be affected and this will convert the entrance to Naga City proper like a barren space once the cutting of trees is carried out.

Orozco said the trees affected are those along the national highway in barangays Concepcion Pequeña, Concepcion Grande, Del Rosario and Mabulo -- the areas covered by the road widening.

He said the trees to be affected are narra, mango, acacia, mahogany and talisay -- all giving enough shade,

DENR-12 to donate seized logs to schools GENERAL Santos City-The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Region 12 is working for the processing of around 140,000 board feet (bd.ft.) of illegally-cut lumber and logs that were seized last March in Sultan Kudarat province into arm chairs and other fixtures.

Datu Tungko Saikol, DENR Region 12 director, said in a statement that they decided to donate the illegally-cut forest products to the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the region and process them for various uses.

He said the two agencies have earlier sent requests to the DENR-12 for the use of the seized logs and lumber as materials for classroom furniture and other purposes.

Section 2.7 of Executive Order (EO) No. 23 issued by President Benigno S. Aquino III in February 2011 provides that “DepEd shall be given priority in the use of all confiscated logs.”

EO 23 specifically declared a moratorium on the cutting and harvesting of timber in the natural and residual forests and the creation of the anti-illegal logging

SII is a private company which has an existing production-sharing agreement with the DENR under IFMA 022 and is obliged to protect the leased area, he said.

The official said the management of SII had sought the assistance of the DENR to stop the encroachment of illegal loggers in their IFMA area.

Saikol said the hauling of the forest products from the site is currently ongoing through the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Sultan Kudarat.

In a report, CENRO Sultan Kudarat head Jerry Dalauta noted that “a partial hauling” of the seized products was already accomplished by their office.

He cited that a total of 7,565 pieces of logs and lumbers equivalent to 140,277 bd.ft. (331cu.m.) have been so far hauled and are now stock piled at the base of the Army’s 601st Brigade in Barangay Kalandagan in Tacurong City.

Concepcion Grande barangay captain Elmer Baldemoro said the government could better use the funds for the road widening to other projects.

Naga City Mayor John Bongat suggested that considering the present width of the road affected by the widening, there is already enough space for a four-lane structure.

Bongat suggested that the trees be spared and the space they occupy must instead be designated as lanes on both sides of the road for bicycling and jogging.

He said condemning the big, old trees aged from 40 to 60 years will be hard to

accept.

In a consultation meeting held at the city development office attended by the DPWH, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and local officials as well as civil society organizations, however, majority of those who attended favored the widening project and the cutting of the hundreds of trees.

DPWH officials said that for every tree cut, they will replace it with 50 trees of the same varieties.

Arnel Rodriguez, Camarines Sur Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office chief, said his office will issue the corresponding permit to cut, adding he sees nothing wrong with the

condemnation of the trees to give way to the widening project.

But the Naga City People’s Council (NCPC) is not convinced with the need to cut the old-grown trees, which, it said, everyone in Naga City is proud to have along the highway.

“What the government is doing is the opposite of its much-vaunted National Greening Program, in which the DENR has boasted to have planted at least 1.5 billion trees, starting in 2011 and to end in 2016,” the NCPC said in a statement.

NCPC chair Ramiro Samar said it is very disgusting and frustrating that after planting and attending to the growth of the hundreds of trees lined up along the national road, all of a sudden it comes easy for the government to condemn them to give way to another project in the guise of development.

“Is it not the DENR that said, ‘it take years to grow a tree but it takes only a minute to cut a tree’,” Samar said.

Samar said the NCPC will oppose the planned cutting of the 651 trees, adding that the NCPC will call for another consultation meeting with agencies involved to get the right solution involving the trees.

The regional DPWH passes the buck FINALLY, the regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has spoken. An official at the regional office revealed that the upgrading project of the road from Cagayan de Oro City to Laguindingan in Misamis Oriental is with the DPWH’s Second District Engineer’s office.

Engr. Bonie Lora, a staff at the DPWH’s regional office, said that the Cris Diaz upgrading of the road in Alubijid, an adjacent town of Laguindingan, was a project of the DPWH’s Second Engineering District.

The problem of the non-completion of the roadupgrading project of the highways from Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City became an object of public outrage.

The public also knew that the upgrading of the road of the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan highways started last year.

Until now, the project remains incomplete resulting to public outcry.

The opening of the new Laguindingan airport for commercial flights exacerbated the problem when commuters complained about traffic congestion. Obviously, the heavy traffic in the area was due to the unfinished road-upgrading project.

Perhaps, unable to withstand the mounting public outrage, the regional office of the DPWH issued a statement sort of “washing its hands” of the responsibility.

Engr. Lora said that even the regional office wonders why the completion 1.5-kilometer upgrading of the road remains incomplete.

The DPWH said that the road-upgrading project started on March 27, 2013 with a budget allocation of

P 31,617,000 million. The contractor Henry S. Oaminal Construction won the bid in the contract amount of P 29,662,647 million.

The completion of the project was on June 24, 2013.

Take note, please. The road project started on March 2013 and completion was on June 24, 2013. Again, the regional DPWH office is wondering why the project remains incomplete. Worse, the road upgrading of the 1.5-kilometer highways in Alubijid leading to Laguindingan was only 25 percent complete, the DPWH report said.

What is happening? Ask Engr. Noel Oclarit, the District Engineer of the province Second Engineering District. Oclarit should make clarification on the DPWH report. This was the reply of Engr. Lora when asked to shed light in the delay of the completion of the project.

Anyway, the commuting public will have the option to file a case (criminal or administrative) with the Ombudsman against the DPWH officials. Certainly, it is not only Oclarit who has the liability in the delay of the completion of the Alubijid project. Even the contractor could not escape indictment in a graft case, if any.

Actually, the delay in the completion of the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan road-upgrading project has been an object of criticism from this corner. The critical appraisal of the snail-paced project was due to insistent public complaints of the burden it has caused to commuters.

Definitely, it is the right of the public to complain and inquire on the status of government projects. Apart from this, it is also the right of the public to sue government officials who could be guilty of dereliction of duty. After all, the taxpayers’ money pays for government projects.

The current labor woes plaguing the Davao Citybased Brokenshire College, a school owned by the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP), exactly fall under the above situation in a capitalist order. The school recently dismissed 11 of its College of Nursing

Clinical Instructors (CIs) on the ground of redundancy effective the current school year.

Expectedly, the school’s labor union protested the dismissal accusing the administration of union busting since their collective bargaining agreement was just signed first quarter of

this year. Since both parties differed greatly in their respective positions, the school operation is now marred by labor unrest.

I’ll leave it to the two contending parties to communicate to everyone their respective positions and justify themselves before the clientele they are serving in particular and the public in general. I’ll just focus our discussion of the controversy on how a church-owned institution could behave like any ordinary business enterprise by treating its human resource merely as tools that they can dispense with anytime they want.

Oro eligible to benefit from performance challenge fund CAGAYAN de Oro is eligible to receive support for the implementation of projects that will support the MillennIum Development Goals of the national government.

In line with this, the City Council during its regular session Monday presided

by Vice Mayor Caesar Ian E. Acenas, enacted Ordinance No. 12617-2013, authorizing Mayor Vicente Y. Emano to enter into and sign the Memorandum of Agreement with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)

Region 10, represented by Regional Director Atty.

Rene K. Burdeos, governing the implementation of the Performance Challenge Fund (PCF) projects.

The PCF for local government units is a flagship program of the DILG that serves as a facility to help stimulate local government units (LGUs) put premium on transparency and accountability to enable them to avail of financial support that will jumpstart and sustain local socioeconomic development initiatives supportive of

national government goals and priorities, according to the MOA. The Power learned that the PCF is an incentive fund to support LGUs in the implementation of highimpact capital investment projects in the Annual Investment Program (AIP).

According to the MOA, projects to be implemented under the PCF subsidy are those involving preparedness to disasters and adaptation to climate change; sustainable environmental management and transparent and accountable local

governance.

The responsibility of the DILG regional office as stipulated in the MOA is to prepare and issue checks as financial subsidy to the city, facilitate the release of the PCF check and conduct periodic monitoring of the program in coordination with the Provincial PCF focal person, cluster head and City or Municipal Local Government Operations Officer.

It shall likewise conduct validation and ocular inspection of the project and post the status of the project

DTI in SoCot recommends funding of 6 trade projects

GENERAL Santos City–– The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in South Cotabato has recommended the funding and implementation of six trade-related projects under the agency’s Shared Service Facility (SSF) program.

Flora Gabunales, DTISouth Cotabato provincial director, said the six projects were the initial ventures that they identified and recommended for approval by DTI Region 12 as recipients of the SSF initiative in the area.

“These projects require a funding of P3.28 million,” the official said.

The projects are the production center for processed herbal products of the Danlag Women Association in Tampakan town; San Felipe pottery industry development project of the Purok O. Belo Pottery Makers’ Association in Tantangan; meat processing center of the Concepcion Women’s Association in Koronadal City; production center on bag making of the Libas Bag Making Association in Tantangan; production center for T’nalak-based indigenous crafts of the

Lolong bread.

Brgy ordinance under review

THE barangay ordinance of Barangay No. 30, which amends Ordinance No. 0102005, and imposes a new rate of Barangay Clearance Fees was referred by the City Council committee on barangay affairs chaired by Councilor Anthony Brellita to the City Legal Office for legal opinion.

Pursuant to the ordinance, barangay clearance fees of business with corresponding new rate are: building/construction, fencing, billboards, employment, renewal, school, connections, and marriage and TRADE | page 8 baptismal.

Meanwhile, the committee requested the City Social Welfare and Development Department for a disaster report relative to the request of Barangay Kauswagan to declare part of Zone 5 as a calamity area.

Several residential houses at Bongbongon were totally or partially damaged by a fire that hit the area weeks ago.

According to the barangay council, prior to the release of barangay funds to the victims, there is a need for the City Council to declare the place as calamity area. (JBD)

LEADERSHIP. It’s not a question of who the leader is and who the followers are. That word is not only entitled for the school heads, principals, supervisors, or even superintendents but it is entitled to everyone who manages the school, who definitely is part of the institution.

Even, per see, pupils must understand also the value of leadership not only in their classrooms but in the school in general. Good leadership means understanding the fact that you

must be a follower also.

Good leadership means thinking the good of all and not for your own. Good leadership indeed, means

overlooking the consequences ahead for every step and action done, thus weighing and considering the good and bad impacts it will bring.

At school, a school head is treated as the leader. That every command he will instruct must be obeyed by next in rank that every word he will utter is of truth and confidence. But mind you, being a school head takes so much understanding, takes so much patience, and takes so much effort.

As many may perceive

that it is easy because a school head just instructs others, but it is not. It requires study and research and knowledge, it even cut one’s social life. Because merely being a school head is not only looking over 40 pupils but overseeing the whole school, the whole institution.

Thus, I may say that leadership is not defined by words, not even measured by works done, but by the heart who is always open to serve, willing to serve.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) lost 5.57 points or 0.08 percent to end 6,513.20 from previous day’s 6,518.77 finish. Prior to Wednesday trading, the index rebounded for three straight sessions after sharp losses.

Brokenshire College as a church-owned institution should have a different attitude toward its workers.

The institution of learning is expected to combine its pro-human rights advocacy, and advocacy the UCCP is widely known for, and its being part of the body of Christ. In its treatment of its workers, however, Brokenshire College is behaving like any ordinary enterprise whose primary reason for being is to maximize its profit.

It is in this regard that Brokenshire College miserably failed in living up to its being a church-owned institution. Redundancy programs availed of by business enterprises of this world should have no place in an institution that claims to be

part of the body of Christ.

In availing of this program which is admittedly not contrary to the laws of this world, the school administrators simply embraced the easy path in resolving their internal problems.

Undeniably, the enrollment of its College of Nursing had dived down to levels that make that college not profitable anymore if viewed from the capitalist point of view. But over-all enrollment in all colleges and universities in Davao and elsewhere in the country remained practically the same. While many incoming freshmen students did not take up nursing anymore, this does not mean they did not pursue college education anymore.

They still went to college.

Apparently, Brokenshire College administrators did not prepare for this even-

tuality. This just goes to show their lack of savvy in running a tertiary level institution of learning. They just waited in their own sweet time for the students to come to the college to enroll. They must not have undertaken efforts at enticing incoming freshmen to enroll in their college resulting in the decrease of their enrollment over-all.

This failure is indisputably traceable to the school administrators. The main reason for a school administration’s existence is to plan ways by which they can continue to bring in students to their school.

Since Brokenshire College is justifying its adoption of the redundancy program to terminate its CIs its dwindling enrollment, this is a tacit admission on their part that over-all their enrollment for the current

If it has not dwindled, why did they not assign the 11 CIs to teach general education subjects related to their profession? When the College was awash with nursing students, did the school not maximize the services of these CIs to the fullest? And when the College of Nursing was experiencing boom in its enrollment, did the school not benefit from the revenue it brought in? She added that in order to optimize EAGA’s potential as a food basket, a Mindanao innovation and growth corridors development program is in the offing to propel the island-region’s growing business industries.

“This planned Mindanao food, agribusiness and logistics corridor will form part of the proposed larger BIMP-EAGA food and logistics corridor and will specifically highlight the food and agribusiness contribution of Mindanao to the economic sub-region,” explained Antonino.

The Mindanao innovation and growth corridors development program will initially comprise of five components namely the Tagum-Davao-General Santos corridor, the Western and Northern Mindanao corridor, the Central Mindanao-Bukdinon corridor, the Surigao-Agusan-Davao Oriental corridor and the Mindanao mariculture and trade corridor which will cover the areas of Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

Currently, more than 7,000 hectares across Mindanao and Palawan are being devoted for hybrid rice seed production. A maximum of 26,000 hectares will be utilized during the wet cropping season months of June to September.

Antonino explained that this initiative is part of Mindanao and Palawan’s joint-business ventures with Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, and Malaysia in the production of hybrid rice.

“BIMP-EAGA is also developing its small-holder coconut-based industries initiated by the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) in collaboration with its Indonesian counterpart,” she said.

Antonino said that the initiative aims to reduce poverty incidence in the sub-region’s countryside by encouraging coconut farmers to engage in agribusiness and multi-sectoral partnerships.

BIMP-EAGA is an economic cooperation formally created in 1994 covering the entire Brunei Darussalam; 10 provinces in the Indonesian islands of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Irian Jaya; Sabah, and the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Labuan; and Mindanao and Palawan in the Philippines.

The ASEAN sub-grouping is primarily intended to spur development in the lagging sub-economies of the member countries by boosting intra-EAGA trade, tourism, and investments.

Oro to host anti-illegal gab in July

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– The Anti-Illegal Drugs Core Group is set to conduct a summit on Anti-Illegal Drugs for the City of Cagayan de Oro on July 21 to 26, 2013.

Composed of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and the Cocoon Foundation for Substance Abuse, Inc., all in Northern Mindanao, the Core Group hopes that by the end of 2020, all barangays in the city shall have strengthened their respective campaigns against dangerous drugs.

With the theme Kagayanon Kontra Droga (2KD), the Summit aims to find ways: 1) to strengthen the capability of barangays in the city to implement a Community-Based AntiDrug Abuse Programs, and 2) to strengthen coordination among stakeholders in the fight against dangerous drugs.

Various lined-up activities to consist of PreSummit, Summit Proper and Post Summit. Pre-Summit (from July 21 to 22) activities include: Fun Run, Press Conference, media guesting, poster-making contest, and t-shirt designing/printing.

XU tops CARP Quiz Bowl in R-10

AGAYAN DE ORO – As part of the celebration of the CARP Silver Anniversary this month, the Department of Agrarian Reform-Region 10 held a CARP Quiz Bowl on June 16 at Centrio, an Ayala mall in the city.

Te a m s f rom s e v e n schools participated in the contest that comprised 30 questions ranging from easy, medium and hard categories.

The schools were Central Mindanao University, Pilgrim Christian College, Mindanao University of Science and Technology, Liceo de Cagayan University, Cagayan de Oro CollegePHINMA , Lourdes College and Xavier University.

To handle any concern

during the contest, a panel of arbiters was created.

This was headed by DAR-10 Regional Director Felix Aguhob with Asst. RD for Operation Nicky Peralta and Atty. Stephanie Cabrera, Chief of the DAR-10 Legal Division, as members.

With three rounds of elimination, only four teams reached the final round.

The Xavier University team emerged as the champion and went home with

P10,000 cash prize and a plaque for the school. The contingent from Lourdes College ranked 1st runner-up and received P7,500 and also a plaque for their school.

The Central Mindanao University delegation was the 2nd runner-up and got P5,000 as well as a plaque for the school.

Day care center workers join adventure program

Twenty-three day care center workers from Liloan, Cebu participated in a two-day adventure program facilitated

by Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.’s (RAFI) Kool Adventure Camp (KAC) last May 25-26 in Balamban, Cebu.

The program aimed to deepen the participants’ understanding of their responsibility and strengthen their commitment in educating and developing responsible and productive citizens among children in their community.

The participants accomplished tasks that brought them to different individual and group realizations.

They shared and discussed their learning and related them to their actual experience as day care center workers.

The day care center workers compared the challenging activities to the difficulties they face on the job—poor facilities, lack of support from the local government and the community, low honorarium, and hard-to-reach location of day care centers—but which they overcome so that their pupils may learn and have an opportunity to a good life in the future.
