MEMBER countries of the Brunei Darussalam Indonesia Malaysia the Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) are strengthening initiatives to achieve food self-sufficiency within the economic sub-region by 2016, in a bid to become the food basket of ASEAN and the rest of Asia. Joint initiatives aimed at securing food self-sufficiency will be forged by the member-countries this week following the two-day BIMP-EAGA agribusiness meeting that kicked off in Palawan, Tuesday. “Food security is among BIMP-EAGA’s top priorities and we are seeing the potentials of the sub-region
in becoming as the food basket of the ASEAN or perhaps the rest of Asia,” said Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) chair Luwalhati Antonino. She added that for BIMPEAGA member-countries to achieve this goal, they must intensify efforts geared towards developing further the region’s agriculture and fishery production through joint-venture agreements and by strengthening food industry research and development. “BIMP-EAGA leaders see the great potentials of the sub-region as a food source and as for our part, we have been nurturing an atmosphere that is conducive for food investments and businesses to further
