CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY

– The local government here sees the increase in drug-free villages with the rebranded anti-drug campaign “Buhay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan (BIDA)”.

During Saturday’s Northern Mindanao leg launch of BIDA at Xavier Ateneo Sports Centre, Councilor Romeo Calizo said the previous administration’s anti-drug policy resulted in 23 out of 80 villages being declared drug-free.

“We have followed the provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act with PDEA-10 (Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Northern Mindanao) supervising us in our quest to have a drugfree Cagayan de Oro City,” Calizo said in an interview.

He expressed hoped that BIDA will be even more successful.

‘Muslims, Christians can work hand-in-hand to restore peace in Marawi,’ says Catholic bishop

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--Muslims and Christians can go together as one in the effort of restoring peace in the city following the tragic warfare in 2017, said Bishop Edwin Dela Peña of the Prelature of Marawi.

Dela Peña emphasized that the mission of bringing back peace in the locality would require a persistent process, especially since impacted residents have yet to restore their lives, properties and livelihood in the most affected area (MAA).

Despite this, he stressed that there are still many steps to take to get through the challenge, such as advancing

PBBM wants scholarships to address nurses’ exodus; private sector steps up aid for healthcare

PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday said the government may resort to providing scholarships for nurses and other medical workers as many countries scramble to find healthcare professionals to man their hospitals and medical facilities.

In a meeting in Malacańang with representatives of the healthcare cluster of the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC), the President said that although the government can’t prevent nurses from leaving for high-paying jobs abroad, they must at least serve their country if they avail of the government scholarship program.

“Lahat, nurses. Naghahanap… Everybody that I talk to, especially from the States and from Europe… So the only thing is that the scholarship program, that you know, you can’t hold people back from a better life, from a better living…” the President said during the meeting.

“But I think it’s fair that if you provide scholarship, that you expect that there are… mag-serbisyo muna sila ng ilang taon. Hindi babayaran ‘yung scholarship eh. They don’t need to pay that,” the President pointed out.

Department of Health (DOH) Officer-in-Charge

Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the DOH had started discussions with the deans of the University of the Philippines and other allied healthcare services for the government’s “ladderized” scholarship program.

The DOH official expressed hope to produce more nurses as the government implements the program, although it will take two to three years for it to bear fruit.

Vergeire also told the President that the DOH had initial talks with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) for exchange programs with other countries needing healthcare workers.

“So in turn we are going to propose that if we can provide them with these numbers that they need, they [would] provide us also, for example, scholarships for a number of our healthcare workers here,”

Part of DMW’s plans is to secure deals with the country’s bilateral partners or countries to provide funds for scholarships in the Philippines, Vergeire said, noting after graduation, the scholars will be required to serve their communities for a certain period before they could seek overseas employment.

Better health insurance, cheaper meds

The PSAC, for its part, expressed commitment to help the Marcos administration in improving the health system, particularly in strengthening the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) by providing a third-party assessment that will focus on

Mt. Province mayor finally takes oath after junking of protest

BAGUIO CITY – Marcos Ayangwa took his oath of office as the duly elected mayor of Paracelis, Mountain Province on Friday, nearly six months after the elections and since his disqualified rival sought the nullification of his win in the May 9 polls.

The Commission on Election (Comelec), in its November 25 decision disseminated late Friday, denied the motion for reconsideration filed by Avelino Amangyen in October and affirmed the resolution of the 2nd Division canceling Amangyen’s certificate of candidacy (COC).

The Comelec disqualified Amangyen on April 19 for material representation in his COC.

On the question if he has been convicted of a case involving moral turpitude, Amangyen ticked the “No” box but was in fact found guilty of violating Presidential Decree 705 or the Forestry Code in 2013.

The conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeals and subsequently by the Supreme Court in 2018.

His case stemmed from a raid conducted by the police in his residence in Paracelis where several board feet of forest products not covered by permits were found.

He was meted out the penalty of reclusion temporal that carries an imprisonment of a minimum of 12 years and one day to a maximum of 20 years.

“A canceled certificate of candidacy void ab initio (from the beginning) cannot give rise to a valid candidacy, and much less to valid votes. Therefore, votes cast in favor of a candidate whose COC was canceled either before or after the elections, are considered stray votes. Being stray votes, should the candidate whose COC was canceled garner the highest number of votes, he cannot be proclaimed as the winner. It shall be the candidate who garnered the second highest number of votes who will be declared victorious,” the Comelec-Baguio explained in a statement.

Despite the disqualification, Amangyen topped the polls with 9,220 votes while the reelectionist Ayangwa

Love, Strongest Force in the Universe Nanay Amada Ravanera, We Love You So Much

SO painful when my mother died at 10:30am on November 25, 2022 and we the children have to bear the pain of losing our beloved mother, Amada Revilla Ravanera. Together with my brother Atty. Manuel Ravanera and youngest sister Dr. Marlene “Docbebs” Ravanera, and close relatives. We took vigil until 12 midnight, then, Atty. Maning had to leave to take a rest as he was not feeling so well, having been immobilized in a wheel chair for 12 years already due to hemorrhagic stroke but courageously survived all these years as death has no match against his will to live and the amazing love and care of his nursewife, Minda together with equally amazing daughter Atty. Batin and husband Mayor Jay Bago.

Upon reaching home, Atty. Manning was lovingly put to bed to sleep. The following morning, Atty. Manning, upon being wokeup by Minda to pray the Holy Rosary, as part of his daily life did not wake-up anymore as he was already dead at 4:30 am. Oh, so painful! Was he so depressed on the death of his loving mother “na palangga siya kaayo?” “Sinamahan na niya ang pinakamamahal niyang Ina sa kabilang buhay. Yes,

Atty. Manning and Nanay Mading are CONSCIOUSNESS now going to the world of the FORMLESS, to the vast spaciousness and stillness with the Unseen Being where all life forms emanate. Indeed, death is just an illusion as all of us are consciousness that have no life as we are all life.

The world of form is just temporary, all are transient but we are eternal. Can you not feel that?

Both of them, mother and son, have been laid side by side at the Divine Shepherd Funeral Parlor, so rare to see as love brought them together, this time, forever.

I always would recall those good old days when we the seven children would come together to celebrate the birth day of our “Pinakamamahal na Ina. ” It had become a ritual for us to sing the song, “You Raise Me Up,” as the lyrics of the song aptly described how we were lovingly raised by our very loving mother.

Talaga po Nay, as the song goes, “When I am down and oh my soul so weary, when troubles come and my heart burdened be, then I am still and wait here in the silence, Until you come and sit a while with me. You raise me up, so I can stand

Hints and Traces

The serious duty to prepare

“WHAT did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom Scripture says: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, he will prepare your way before you. I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John; yet the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.” (Lk 7, 26-28)

This tremendous praise made by Christ to St. John the Baptist can only highlight the most important task St. John has done in the whole economy of human salvation. And we have to realize that that task somehow is also ours. We have to realize more deeply that we have the serious duty to prepare ourselves for the ultimate purpose of our life, which is none other than to be ‘another Christ.’

We have to help one another in the pursuit of this real goal of our life without getting confused, entangled and lost in our earthly affairs. If ever, these earthly and temporal affairs only serve as means and constant occasions to aim at that goal. They are our pathways to heaven and to God, to share in his divine life as we are meant to do.

We should be very clear about this basic truth about the world in general or about the whole of nature that has been created by God. We need to realize that as God’s creation, the whole world of nature has been imprinted with God’s laws that are meant to give glory to God and to lead us also to him, giving him glory as well. In other words, depending on how we see the world, it is actually a pathway to heaven, to God.

Everything that we discover and make use of in the world should lead us to ask ourselves whether what we are discovering are truly in accordance to God’s will, to his true designs of the world, and whether we can discern how they can be used to give glory to God, which is a matter of loving him and serving the whole of humanity.

We have to be wary of the danger of discovering and using things simply in accordance to our own understanding of them and also to our interest only. This is a common and abiding danger that we have to be most wary about. We have to do everything to avoid and overcome that danger.

Thus, we have to develop that strong and deep attitude

on mountain, you raise me up to walk on story seas, I am strong, when I am on your shoulders, You raise me up, to more than I can be.”

As we all know, life is characterized by polarities, the ups and downs, the light and darkness and the yin and yang. Sometimes, life seems to be so cruel that consign us to a life of misery that when we are down and frustrated, we do not want anymore to stand up. But the loving arm of Amada Revilla Ravanera, the wife of Mr. Vicente Ravanera, our dear father who died 33 years ago, would raise us up and her embrace with all the love and inspiring words would give us the strength to face life courageously. Sometimes, we the children would feel so guilty because it was our mother who would suffer when armed men of the illegal loggers and miners would look for us to shoot us and our mother would cry in despair to hide us.

I remember those years when I as Editor of our School Organ would be charged in Court by powerful politicians for hundreds

of always referring things to God before we put our hands on them. That way, we would be putting ourselves on the right track that hopefully will lead us to God and to see and use things the way they should be seen and used.

This attitude, of course, would require us to be guided always by our Christian faith, instead of just being guided by our human estimation of things. And for that faith to be effective in us, we obviously need to be humble. Without humility, there is no way faith can have any effect on us.

We should be looking for God always in everything that we get involved in. In all the things that we do or handle, we should be asking what are there in those things that are for God, rather than being interested only on what are there in those things that are for us.

This basically is what would comprise as our proper duty to prepare for our ultimate end.

STATE OF MUNICIPAL ADDRESS OF 100 DAYS

ACCOMPLISHMENT AND

CELEBRATION OF 45TH ARAW NG AMAI MANABILANG Nov. 17, 2022

To our beloved governor, Hon. Bombit Adiong, our dynamic vice governor and guest speaker, Hon. Mujam Adiong, our brilliant representative of the first congressional district of Lanao del Sur, Hon. Zia Adiong, the father of Amai Manabilang himself, Sultan sa Ranao Mastura manabilang, former mayor and now Municipal Councilor, Hon. Lydia E. Manabilang, former mayor and now vice mayor James Manabilang, guests, Visitors, members of the Sangguniang Bayan, the Local Government Unit and the people of Amai Manabilang, ladies and gentlemen, GOOD MORNING.

WE ARE BACK!

Matagump[ay nating na reorganized ang: Municipal Peace and Order Council, Municipal School Board, Municipal Health Board, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Municipal Council for the Protection of Children, Municipal Advisory Council, Municipal Anti-Drug Abuse Council, Municipal Council Against Trafficking-Violence Against Women and Children, Municipal Solid Waste Management Board, People’s Law Enforcement Board, Municipal Agriculture and Fisheries Council, and Municipal Fiscal Committee.

SM City CDO Supermalls Support MSME Start-Ups

SM Supermalls in Cagayan de Oro are pitching in to help revive the local economy by supporting local start up businesses with a selling area within their malls through their Christmas Markets.

“SM has done this every Christmas as our support to local businesses,” said Engr. Bernadette May Flores, SM City CDO Uptown Mall Manager. “This time, it’s our way of helping the economy recover from the global pandemic.”

Engr. Flores said SM’s thrust to support local businesses can be perceived in the newly opened SM North Wing where almost all the tenants are local businesses.

In its current iteration, the SM City CDO Uptown Christmas Markets features ten tenants who pay very minimal rents and fees for prime spaces within the mall starting November 19, 2022 to January 8, 2023.

“Our Christmas Markets aim to help them grow and

hopefully become our fulltime tenants in the future,” she added. “Most of them are start-ups, and they are very happy to have been given this opportunity to sell in a high traffic area inside the mall.”

The Christmas Markets was organized in partnership with Doofies Concepts and Events headed by Mr. Kirby Pungtod, who also organized a similar enterprise at the 5th floor of SM City CDO Downtown Premier.

Gov’t urged to hold manufacturers liable for polluting Panigan-Tamugan

DAVAO CITY — Government must hold manufacturing companies liable for polluting the PaniganTamugan watershed, environmental group Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (IDIS), Inc. said.

In a statement released on Friday, IDIS said the results of the brand audit conducted at the watershed from 2020 to 2022 showed that the same international and domestic brands had emerged as top plastic polluters based on the results of the brand audits conducted during this period.

The Panigan-Tamugan Watershed, the city’s next source of potable water, is

the “most important watershed” in the city, according to the group.

The environmental group said that holding the corporations accountable bears greater significance as the world leaders gather for the first round of talks on the Global Plastics Treaty in Punta del Este, Uruguay, this month.

“This is a historic opportunity to address the plastic pollution crisis by reducing the amount of plastic both produced and used by companies via legallybinding mechanisms and enforcement policies,” it added.

For this year, a total of 1,987 pieces of mixed wastes were recovered from the watershed, with the topplas-

tic-polluting corporations being ranked as follows: Nestle, Oishi, Unilever, WL Foods, Colgate-Palmolive, The Coca-Cola Company, Prifood Corporation, Rebisco, and Universal Robina Corporation.

Since the brand audit began in 2020, the group said some 7,000 pieces of assorted plastic wastes had See URGED , page 9

What is a master teacher?

A master teacher is one who has mastered the basics of teaching, one who goes above and beyond to ensure a positive learning experience for each student, and one who shares his or her knowledge with the broader learning community.

A master teacher is a person who is skilled in the education curriculum for his or her subject matter. Having the ability to help other educators be more successful in the classroom is also associated with the master teacher definition. The person who serves as a master teacher has mastered the basics of curriculum, has a proven track record of growing students, and has effective school district and state evaluations.

Master teachers may have their classrooms, but often they serve as direct mentors to other teachers. While the job description of a master teacher may vary, educational

experts have defined five significant areas in which a master teacher should be skilled.

Master teachers are skilled in student learning and development and commit to student success. They use data from student test scores and district assessments to collaborate with other teachers to grow student learning. For example, if a diagnostic test is given at the beginning of the year, the master teacher can use the information to determine where the deficiencies are for that student. They can come up with extra support such as tutoring, math or literacy reinforcement, or other professional learning courses to fill in any educational gaps. Also, master teachers work with special education professionals to ensure that qualified students get the required accommodations and services needed to enhance their learning.

Back to face to face class schedule

DEPED has been preparing for the implementation of the five-day in-person classes since SY 2022-23 opened in August. Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte explained that many public schools were allowed to implement various learning options from August to November 2. These options include five days of in-person classes, blended learning or full distance learning.

However, she noted that some public schools may still be allowed to continue blended or distance learning. We allow exceptions subject to the approval of our regional directors.

While public schools are mandated to implement five

days of in-person classes starting today, Duterte confirmed that private schools have been allowed by DepEd to continue with the implementation of blended learning aside from five days of in-person classes and full distance learning.

On the side of the private sector institutions, we allowed them the options of blended learning, online classes and five days in-person classes so that they can recoup their investments from their online technologies because they bought so much online resources. Allowing them to continue with blended learning will also help prevent the closures of small private schools.

REFLECTIONS TOWARD MAKING A DIFFERENCE

It is great that the Department of Education (DepEd) had envisions to shape the life of a learner for the good of the nation. This is consistent with my personal philosophy of doing my best and making a difference in every endeavor I take. But for the past seven years, I have been juggling my public-school teaching tasks which include imparting life-long learnings to the learners, preparing records and reports, and performing delegated administrative tasks. In addition, I must deal with the agency’s systems and colleagues’ diverse culture. To be prudent and productive, I successfully dealt with all of these with prayer, passion humility, patience and industry. In doing my mission, I do the extra mile like utilizing my personal time, money and resources to maximize my potential. Indeed, public school teaching is a public

service.

With my reflective attitude, I realized that God has a purpose of allowing my career to shift from being a corporate manager to teaching. That is why I teach while I learn and touch the individuals entrusted to my care. I learn from school administrators, staff and coteachers whom I collaborate with. They are instrumentals for me to be the best that I can be. I also learn from my students when they share to me their aspirations, challenges, and vulnerabilities. I am also grateful because, somehow, I am influencing others in the organization in pursuit for the common good. I dreamt of making a difference in teaching and touch the lives of learners for a lifetime. I am proud to be a public-school teacher, an implementer of the programs that help build a better nation.

The Learners and the New Technology

With the adverse of new technology now a day. Indeed, the media has influenced our youth, specially the learners.

From the old times when children just want to have fun under the sun or just play around with their childhood friends and relatives. It implied has different influenced as to what and who we are now. Based on my experienced long time ago, when all I can face is my friends or my book or any reading materials and then I will engaged myself into different physical or outdoor activities, of course with my friends, neighbors and relatives. My Childhood can be defined and described as happy and gay.

At present time, comparing the ideals and influences of the 21st century, the new generation, wherein the technology has greatly influenced the children much. It is very noticeable that some of the school children now have some new gadgets like smart cellphone, Ipad or tablet. Well, it has advantages and disadvantages. In the basic education, we can integrate the use of multimedia in classroom instructions. Like for example, when a certain class will have a video/movie

or PPT on a certain topic during discussion or demonstration. It can be a big help in understanding the lesson well. It can be a guide to the teachers and students.

However, we cannot avoid that some of them tend to exhaust their time on playing online games especially when they’re in their homes on weekends. It may cause them not to do their assignment or assigned task given by their parents. At all times, the development of a school child depends on how they brought up at home or their first teacher which is their parents.

As a teacher, we have an important counterpart on how to encourage our pupils to minimize their acts and instead focus on their studies. But there are some pupils who bring a mobile phone, it has an advantage specially on emergency situations. If ever the pupils using it during class hour that’s the time the teacher will keep the phone away from the child, then return after the class.

Thus, as a teacher, we do have s significant role in portray in their lives of our pupils in their daily endeavors.

“It is alarming that ‘Crypto Marketers’ is dominating here in Cagayan de Oro City among other nearby areas. We encourage the public to be cautious from

the various invitations representing the said entity. It is our mandate to protect the investing public hence, calling out individuals to protect their money in investing to Crypto Marketers or Crypto Marketers Worldwide” says Lawyer Frederick A. Enopia, Director of SEC-CDOEO in a statement.

Celebrating Research on Teachers Day

LECIMAR L. ESDRELON Tagoloan National High School “Research is creating new knowledge.” Neil Armstrong

I remember my first encounter with the subject Research (2011), and it was mixed emotions for me. Although I have done my undergraduate thesis my inclination towards research is low. It took one person in 2020 to change my perception about research when I met our district research coordinator in Tagoloan Dr. Carnila D. Simacon.

It is true that as teachers there will be many problems that will challenge our patience and passion. And as we celebrate teacher’s day, I realized the critical role of research in making a difference in the teaching profession. As I struggle to multitask from one work to another, I looked back on the number of students I have encountered, taught, and somehow touched their lives. Without the openness to embrace my role that as teacher it is beyond simply teaching concepts but also looking for solutions. From accepting that my learners need help I was able to create innovations in my teaching by simplifying modules, craft -

ing indigenized materials, and extending my time for remediation. Without the value of research instilled in me I may never be able to diagnose and resolve problems as well within the four corners of my classroom and beyond the school grounds. The opportunity shapes my views about becoming a part of the solution than adding problem to the already degrading quality of our public educational system.

I must admit so much needs to be done. As we craft innovations sharing research results for feedback as well as improving its delivery is key to build a satisfying learning experience. Teaching is not a one-person show it is a continuous process of collaboration between the teacher, the learners, the parents, and other stakeholders. How we make our interventions sustainable though must be supported with research data. It is only through this process that we can make a workable solution for the impending challenges in the educational sector and across all other professions. Indeed, celebrating research on teachers’ day is a memorable one.

Teachers Duties and Responsibilities in New Normal Education

When the epidemic hit, teachers continued to be unsung heroes despite having a lot of paperwork to complete for the classroom, feeling stressed and anxious, and having limited access to technology and the internet.

Although we might think of teachers as as being specialists in academic requirements and classroom expectations, their contributions to the pandemic’s core are actually highly significant and advantageous.

Teachers during these challenging times collaborated closely with other members of their professional learning community teams and gave their time freely to stop the virus’s spread, which was the primary reason for changing the current educational model.

Instead of lecturing to rows of desk-bound students who are obediently listening and taking notes, instruction offers each child a rich, fulfill-

ing, and individual learning experience. The educational environment is not limited to the classroom but rather encompasses the home, the neighborhood, and the entire world. Information isn’t primarily contained in books; instead, it exists everywhere in the form of bits and bytes. Thousands of teachers are setting the example by rethinking every aspect of their work, including their interactions with students, coworkers, and the community, the tools and techniques they use, their rights and obligations, the structure of the curriculum, the standards to set, and how to determine whether they are being met, as well as their initial preparation as educators and ongoing professional development. In order to better serve schools and students, teachers are, in a nutshell, reinventing both themselves and their profession.

3 CAFGUs slain, 2 hurt in Maguindanao Norte attack

CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao – Three militiamen were slain and two others were injured in a gun attack at about 1:20 a.m. Monday in Buldon, Maguindanao del Norte, the Army said.

Lt. Col. Dennis Almorato, the Army’s 6th Infantry Division spokesperson, told reporters that the militiamen were part of the Army unit securing the bridge damaged by Severe

Tropical Storm Paeng last month in Barangay Edcor, Buldon town.

Citing field reports, Almorato said the gunmen fled toward the hinterlands of Barangay Nuyo after the attack.

Two armed men, believed to be members of a local terrorist group, arrived on a motorbike and opened fire on members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU), he said.

Teaching: the supreme art

AS the world finds ways to navigate the education landscape in the new normal, teachers carry the responsibility of making sure that their remote teaching methods are working. Many teachers had to learn new things and continue their development to catch up with technology and the students’ emerging needs. The teachers need to be able to help or guide students who are having a hard time with distance learning. At the same time, they strive to meet both the parents’ and the school’s expectations. Commitment is, indeed, at the heart of this noble profession. Burdened by their personal struggles compounded by the pandemic, teachers continue to carry the responsibility of educating the nation, a crucial aspect in national

development and progress.

We can pay tribute to teachers by showing our appreciation to the teachers in our lives—our past and present teachers, the teachers of our children, our teacher friends or relatives, and so on. Expressing appreciation can take many forms, but I’m sure they will appreciate an uplifting message or a note of gratitude. We can, for instance, tell them how they inspired us and positively affected our lives.

But aside from showing them our gratitude and respect, it’s also important that we support their cause and inform ourselves about their plight, the issues or struggles they are facing, so we can help them better. As we do this, the students and the nation benefit in the end from the improvements in their capabilities.

Externalized the value of reading towards learning recovery with innovative reading booklet

CODE-focused skills = Phonological awareness and phonics to recognize words, to be able to sound them out phonetically, and to read them fluently.

Meaning-focused skills = Vocabulary and comprehension means to understand the meaning of what was read.

We apply phonics skills, our vocabulary, and our understanding of grammar to give meaning to what we read. Choose materials that support the objective or purpose of the lesson plans.

Choice of reading materials is based upon data-based decision making. Ideally have a reading “core” curriculum program that is explicit and systematic to support codefocused and meaning-focused

instruction.

Additional reading materials (books, activities) support the grade-level (or stagelevel) objectives and offer a range to meet the needs of all students. Knowledge about what to teach: teach codeand meaning-focused skills Knowledge about how to teach it: direct instruction, small group instruction (ability groups) helps match materials to students and understanding that code-focused skills are slow to develop for struggling individual students.

Specify objectives, devise strategies, develop teaching procedures, select examples, sequence skills, provide practice and review and monitor and feedback (praise, model, lead, test and retest).

The learners’ academic performance in today’s face to face learning modality

THE availability of teaching and learning materials, students’ personality traits, personal goals and teachers’ level of experience significantly affect students’ academic performance. Face to face learning is a really effective way to learn knowledge and skills because it often combines different ways of learning including writing, reading, discussion, presentations, projects, group work, film clips, demonstration and practice.

This is where the teacher and the student meet in a set place for a set time for either one on one learning or most commonly in group class lessons similar to what happens in school. You’ll be able to

concentrate harder on your learning because there’ll be less distraction than if you were at home. You can gain greater understanding, stories and real world examples form teachers and other students. You have a greater chance of completing your course successfully by doing it in a classroom situation. You may feel more comfortable and learn more easily in a familiar, traditional classroom situation. You can access more information and richer understanding through teacher and other students’ body language and voice. You have the opportunity to connect with, problem-solve and network with other students from a wide range of backgrounds.

Face to face classes: challenges beyond

ONE of the sectors that took a beating at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic was education. The Unicef, which continues to advocate for the resumption of in-person classes in various countries, has noted that while schools globally were forced to suspend operations for an average of 79 days, those in the Philippines did not hold face to face classes for over a year and opted instead to conduct classes through online and distant learning modalities.

The indefinite suspension of classes and the subsequent and abrupt shift to new learning modalities created challenges such as unequal access to gadgets and on -

line resources, particularly for marginalized students. This was another blow to the country which prior to the pandemic was already struggling to raise the quality of basic education.

If there is a silver lining, the pandemic shone a light on a not so glaring truth: the pivotal role that educational institutions play in child rearing and caretaking. Parents struggled to fulfill their duties as employees and home keepers while working from home. Before the pandemic, those responsibilities did not pose any challenge as parents had support from teachers in caring and promoting the welfare of their children.

The academic performance of junior high school students after the modular distance learning

DUE to the Covid-19 pandemic, schools, particularly in the rural areas employed modular distance learning to ensure educational continuity. The widespread prevalence of the Covid-19 pandemic has severely affected the educational system around the world.

For instance, most countries temporarily closed schools and other educational institutions to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

When educational isntitutions were closed, learners as well as teachers miss the opportunity to socially interact which is essential to learning and development. To maintain the education of millions of Filipino learners and for every school to still attain its mission and vision

which is to provide quality education to every Filipino learner, DeEd implemented modular distance learning.

Modular distance learning involvfes individualized instruction that allows learners to use self-learning module whether printed orin digital format which are centered on the most essential learning competencies as provided by DepEd. Teachers provide learners with the SLMs which include distribution and restrieval as well as giving assessment tools to check for understanding and provide immediate and appropriate feedback. In modular distance learning, the teacher takes responsibility for monitoring the progress of the learners through home visitations.

CES Care: A road to learning recovery

CES Care is the Cabacungan Elementary School Comprehension Activity for Reading Enrichment. It is an initiative to address the poor performance of reading skills and reading performance of the child due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

WHY don’t students read more? Digital distractions? No books at home? Too much testing? Kim Kardashian? It depends on the student. It depends on illiteracy vs. aliteracy. It depends on how you define reading.

They haven’t found the right book or type of book. How do you feel when your principal drops a book in your lap – something wellintentioned but not even a little naturally interesting to you. Do you hate to read because you don’t want to read

it? No one hates to read. Some of us are just pickier readers than others. They need general reading strategies they can turn to from time to time. Market reading to them.

Take pictures of them reading. Start a Caught Reading class Instagram feed or #caughtreading. Treat it with the same creativity and passion that marketing agencies successfully market Nike shoes as a lifestyle choice. They need specific reading strategies they can self-select based on context. Identify their strengths and areas for growth as a reader. Help them self-assess in the same way, then work together with them and their parents to create a set of four to six reading strategies for them to use flexibly depending on what they’re reading.

Love of reading

PARENTS who read to their children and talk about what they are reading together promote a joy of reading and literacy achievement. How can teachers encourage reading at home and support the role of parents as educators? One way is through the use of our reading adventure packs – a paired set of theme-based fiction and nonfiction books and related interactive activities that kids bring home from school to share with their family. Just assemble everything into a two-gallong zip top bag and they’re ready to go.

I love the fact that there are clear, accessible and easy to understand suggestions for parents in each PDF.

The activities are fun and educational to link to any book that suits the themes, not just the ones suggested.

What goes into each reading adventure pack? Parent information sheet with an introductory note that you can personalize, instructions about how to use the packet and tips for sharing fiction and nonfiction books with children, two books (one fiction and one nonfiction), creativity activity (a hands-on craft project), imagination activity (encourages imaginative play, writing or drawing), get real activity (vocuses on real-world experiences for parent and child) and bookmark (lists the featured titles and alternative titles).

The effect of Covid-19 pandemic on young learners

Cabacumgan

WITHOUT urgent action, the global learning crisis will become a generational catastrophe. Nearly two thirds of ten-year-olds are unable to read and understand a simple text. Education systems are failing our children even before the pandemic. Covid-19 has exacerbated this learning crisis and children in almost every country have fallen behind in their learning.

We need a global effort to tackle the learning crisis head on. Together, we can help every child gain basic reading and maths skills and unlock their potential. An entire education has seen its education interrupted.

At the height of nationwide lockdowns in 2020, approximately 91 percent of the world’s students in more

than 194 countries were out of school. This has caused immeasurable disruption to the lives, learning and wellbeing of children around the world.

As school doors reopen, measures like handwashing stations, physical distancing, mask wearing and temperature checks are being integrated into school life. Through the Covid-19 pandemic, family life for many and has been upended by lockdowns, school closures and remote work. For many families, this has meant spending a lot of time together at home navigating the stressful and uncertain situation. Many children have become used to having their parents or caregiver by their side at all hours of the day.

The Effectiveness of the Lesson Video Marungko Approach in Teaching Reading in Kindergarten

TEACHING reading is one of the challenges that we teachers have to face. We have to develop the reading skills of our pupils because this is a very important aspect of learning. There are lots of approaches developed in teaching reading, one of which is the marungko approach.

The marungko approach is an approach designed to equip pupils with the necessary skills to improve reading It also serves as a training guide for teachers in teaching reading. This strategy enables pupils to gradually learn the basics of reading.

Teaching reading using this approach starts with letter sounds rather than names. Instead of the usual order of letters in the alphabet, it starts with the letters M, S, A, L, O etc.

This strategy is one of the most used approaches in teaching reading. According to a study, first graders from a certain elementary school here in the Philippines were tested using this approach. After six months of teaching reading using the marungko approach, the post test results showed significant improvement to them. From 14 nonreaders, it was down to zero.

of thousands of pesos for exposing their corrupt practices. She would cry and would ask me, “pagnatalo ka anak, saan tayo kukuha ng pera?” But the case was dismissed and my mother was so happy.

In the nineties, we her children had been charged by Vicmar Corporation in Court for stopping their illegal logging activities through human barricades and we were charged of two hundred million peso-damage suit. So painful for a mother to see her children being harassed in Court. But again, justice prevailed after all the pains suffered by our mother.

For us seven children, we have all finished schooling because of the hard work of our parents. My father was just an ordinary government official and his salary was not enough to send us all to college. But my mother was my father’s partner to have sufficient income to make us all professionals. She was good in sewing clothes as “ isa po siyang mananahi.” Then, when she had enough capital, she established a SARI-SARI store and a boarding house in Wao, Lanao del Sur, for government employees from far away land. The boarders, mostly from NARRA (now DAR) include lawyers and doctors and every now and then would talk in English that had amazed us no end as we too learned from them.

Because my mother was a good entrepreneur, our family put-up corn and rice mills and acquired big trucks.

My parents were so great in helping their poor relatives, the reason why from being landless, they because productive farmers with 6 to 8 hectares land and were able to send their children to school who are mostly now working abroad. That was how great, Tatay and Nanay were especially NANAY Mading.

But the greatness of Nanay Mading was not only for us children as such loving concern and caring went us far to her grandchildren. Every time she would meet us, she would always ask KAMUSTA NA SI BATIN, SI KIM, SI AARON, SI DAVID, SI LLARA, SI NIKITA, SI CLOWE AND ALL HER GRANDCHILDREN WHOM SHE LOVED SO MUCH TOO. Yes, Nanay Mading, we are strong when we are on your shoulders, You raise us up to more than we can be.

Government (DILG) leads the BIDA program which was launched simultaneously in other regions.

DILG-10 head Wilhelm Suyko urged the public to be BIDA advocates.

“The war on drugs is not yet over. That is why we are all here today to continue on manifesting our full extended support in our campaign against illegal drugs,” he said.

In a video message, Mayor Rolando Uy said they will fully support the national program and address the root causes of drug addiction among the youth, specifically poverty and lack of access to education.

Mayor Edgar Lignes of El Salvador City in Misamis Oriental spoke on behalf of Governor Peter Unabia, who believes that reducing illegaldrug trade and addiction requires a whole-of-government approach.

“We need everybody’s support. It would be a waste of government resources and efforts if our youth will be victims of drug addiction,”

he said.

BIDA was also launched at the Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City; Cebu Plaza Independencia, Cebu City; and People’s Park in Davao City.

“Sa ating lahat, ang hamon ay ugatin natin ang problema ng droga. Dito sa BIDA, hindi lang kapulisan at iba pang law enforcement units ang kikilos. Hanggang grassroots kasama natin dapat dito (For all of us, the challenge is to root out the drug problem. ([With] BIDA, it’s not just the police and other law enforcement units that will act, we should be with the grassroots),” DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. said during the launch in Quezon City.

The program targets drug demand reduction and rehabilitation of drug dependents in the community level.

“Kung mayroon kang isang puno, gusto mong tanggalin ang sanga, putol ka nang putol ng sanga. Pero ang sanga, tubo nang tubo. Kung gusto mong tanggalin ang puno, ugatin mo, ugatin mo ‘yung puno (If there is a tree, you cut the branches and you keep on cutting more branches to keep them from growing. If you want to cut the tree altogether, get rid of its roots. Target the roots),” Abalos said. ( PNA )

the restoration and rehabilitation process with Muslims and Christians all in one picture.

Dela Peña highlighted that with this scenario, both can work on things desired by all, including the return of the displaced families and the appropriate implementation of the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act of 2022.

“Muslims and Christians hand-in-hand working together to build peace and exert influence to people up in Manila to work in tandem with us to be able to realize this dream of return and let the process of compensating the families who lost everything to have something to start with in the rebuilding process,” he said.

As part of this advocated unity between Muslims and Christians, Dela Peña shared that an interfaith dialogue had been spearheaded earlier in November wherein good news was noted.

He bared that during the meeting, the concern on whether the Prelature of Marawi could still be rebuilt in the city was raised, and they all came down to the conclusion that the church could still rise again just like in the past.

Dela Peña conveyed he was happy to know that their Muslim friends want to see them back, highlighting that there were always Christians in

the city and that their presence makes a lot of difference in a way all citizens relate, understand, respect, and tolerate the presence of one another.

Given this chance, the bishop underlined that they wanted to go back to ground zero alongside their Muslim brothers and sisters.

“This is something that we look forward to. Mas mabuti [It is better] that we go together. If we have to return and if the time comes that we can return to Marawi, we will return together hand-in-hand, and rebuild our lives together,” said Dela Peña.

Accordingly, the Prelature of Marawi had been established and became part of the landscape of the city since 1934. ( CRG/PIA-10/Lanao del Sur )
