Cagayan de Oro declares Duterte, Go adopted sons

CAGAYAN DE ORO

CITY – Former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go were declared adopted sons of this city, following their formal proclamation Thursday at Limketkai Luxe Hotel in this city.

The local government of Cagayan de Oro thanked Duterte’s contribution in the fast development of the city during his incumbency as president of the country.

The local government particularly cited Duterte’s flagship project dubbed as “Build, Build, Build” and his no-nonsense illegal drug campaigns nationwide.

Meanwhile, the resolution also cited the successful nationwide project of Senator Go, particularly his establishment of various “Malasakit Centers” inside hospitals all over the

Duterte names Solon in Negros Guv killing

CITY: Former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte accused Cong. Arnel Teves of Negros Oriental as the mastermind in the killing of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo.

“Illegal drugs played in the killing of Ne -

gros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo, “ Duterte said during a visit in Cagayan de Oro City on Thursday.

Degamo was shot dead in his compound on March 4, 2023.

Duterte, accompanied by Sen. Bong Go,

was in Cagayan de Oro City to accept the Distinguished Merit Award from the city’s League of Barangays.

He said that based on the accounts of the suspects who pointed to Teves as the mastermind in the Degamo killing,

the police should file charges against Teves.

“Once the case is filed, the Department of Justice should file a case for the cancellation of Teves passport,” Duterte said.

He said that once the passport is cancelled,

Teves would become a subject if arrest by the international police.

“Teves is lucky. I am no longer in power. Otherwise, another extra judicial killing would be an issue, “ Duterte said albeit jokingly.

The congressman of the third district of Negros Oriental was allegedly linked by two of the arrested suspects as the person who allegedly ordered the hit on Governor Roel Degamo on what is now known as the 'Pamplona massacre' on March 4, this year, which killed nine persons including the governor of the province.

Teves appealed to the president to allow himself to air his side by calling the president and telling him the real scenario of the recent tension in the province.

He said there are people who are against him and they all put the blame on him for the recent killing of the governor and other series of murders in the past years.

US provides P10M add’l aid to Mindoro oil spill response

MANILA – The United States government is providing an additional PHP10 million (USD183,700) in assistance to support Oriental Mindoro’s oil spill management and environmental assessment.

The US Embassy in Manila on Friday said the support would be used to train fisherfolk displaced by the fishing ban as “citizen scientists” who can conduct coastal habitat assessments in the province.

Through its partnership with the ABS-CBN Foundation Inc., the US Agency for International Development (USAID), will also assess and monitor the impact of the oil spill on the coastal communities in the Verde Island Passage.

Mission Director Ryan Washburn had earlier handed over the first batch of personal protective equipment, hygiene kits, and spill cleaning supplies to Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Dolor.

“Many communities in the province depend on the tourism and fisheries industries for their livelihoods, and we know that this makes the recent oil spill in your waters an even bigger crisis,” he said during his visit to Oriental Mindoro this week.

“As your enduring friend, partner, and ally, the United States remains committed to support your journey to recovery, and to continue our partnership toward the protection and conservation of this region’s rich coastal and marine resources,” he added.

R.A 9048 Form No. 10.1 (LCRO)

Dolor extended his gratitude for Washington DC’s “timely assistance” and assured the country that Oriental Mindoro would maximize USAID's donations to reach as many families as possible.

The US government is actively assisting the Philippines’ response to the oil spill.

Earlier this week, a team of experts from the US Coast Guard and the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration arrived in Pola town to provide subject matter expertise in the cleanup.

The US has also provided satellite imagery and modeling applications to help the Philippine Coast Guard and the University of the Philippines-Marine Sciences Institute estimate the trajectory of the spill. (PNA)

In the ‘90’s, a popular candidate for the U.S. presidency coined a campaign cliché which clicked with the voters that catapulted him to the presidency. “It’s the economy stupid!,” a simple hash tag reverberated through-out the land that somehow convinced the voters that what really mattered then was the economy and all the nitty-gritty of economic development, i.e., employment, income, infrastructure and what have you, and discussing other issues was just plain stupidity. Yes, that kind of mindset thrives well in a country that has to perpetuate its stranglehold of economic power in the world whose top eight billionaires have consolidated wealth which is equivalent to the total combined assets of 3.6 billion people on earth or half of the world’s population (based on an Oxfam Study). With economic power goes with it military might. I wasn’t surprised when I got an information that there was a time in recent history when the U.S. was the one supplying armaments to two warring factions in the Middle East. War, after-all, is good business whose stocks of powerful weapons can kill the people of the world forty times over. In fact, based on the investigation on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in the ‘60s, it was not really Oswald who killed Kennedy but a government conspiracy led by the FBI and the CIA in cohort with corporations producing armaments. Ken-

Have my say

nedy was killed because he decided then to stop the Vietnam War and these corporations would not allow the stoppage of war because the United States then was profiting some 500 billion dollars annually out of that war.

Yes, it’s the economy, stupid! Could this be the mindset of US corporations that have dumped excess production of milk and wheat to the sea every time there is over production so as not to affect the law of supply and demand? I’ve read this in a Canadian Library when I visited my elder sister, Dr. Zenaida Ravanera Fernando, PhD. teaching in the University of Western Ontario in the ‘90s.

I was not even surprised upon knowing that a US Trans-National Corporation, Monsanto, was the one which supplied the US military with “yellow rain” which was used against the Vietnamese guerillas during the Vietnam war. “Yellow rain” was the term used to toxic chemicals poured-out like rains to kill the forests where the guerillas were hiding. The more I was not surprised when I knew that it is Monsanto that invented the genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) that have replaced our endemic natural crops (i.e., rice, corn, etc.) to so-called High Yielding Varieties (HYVs) which are subservient to the use of toxic chemicals that have already contaminated our water tables. Yes, everyone has profited from farming i.e., fertilizer and chemical dealers, except the farmers.

Today, let us reflect deeply on the implication of that mindset that what is important is the economy. That money must be used to make more money is a flawed paradigm which is based on the growth-at-allcost development strategy, also known as the NeoLiberal Capitalism. That growth-centered paradigm may have improved the economy but at the expense of the people and the environment.

This truism of the preferential treatment of the economy over the environment became glaring in the Conference of Parties (COP26) on Climate Change held in Glasgow, Scotland from Oct. 2 to Nov. 12, 2021 attended by some 200 world leaders. While thousands of concerned scientists were intensely proposing for the phase out of the usage of coal as it is the main culprit worsening climate change, these world leaders were just all BLAH, BLAH, BLAH on environment and have just decided to reduce the usage of coal. All ecological movements all over the world were disappointed knowing that we are now in a state of planetary emergency as the doomsday

Changes or/and challenges

"I have nothing to offer but blood, tears and sweat!" The former British statesman Sir Winstin L. Churchill (1874-1965) said this in 1940 - certainly in a very sad interrelation during World War II.

Blood, tears and sweat also are there because of changes and challenges in our daily life. Yes, how many times does our life challenge us to a duel? I am not talking about the provocative or defiant people around us who just love to block or eventually want to change our lives into negativism. These people just make "much ado about nothing" (thank you William Shakespeare for this quotation!). These people carry their curt and not-binding smile, but for a long time, these people didn't try even a single step in the direction

of changes and challenges.

The rest is silence. And allow me to quote Shakespeare again: "There are more things in heaven and earth. Horatio, then are dreamt of in your philosophy!"

Every change means a challenge. Changes in life are always important and necessary. Let's alter or make a difference; let's put one thing for another; let's shift, let's quit one state for another, let's take fresh clothing! Change is a transformation from the old to the new, from negative to positive, from ignorance to knowledge, from doubts and worries to understanding and awareness, from fear to faith, from death to growth, from sadness to happiness, from "I cannot" to " I can"!

Nothing is permanent except a change. A change

cannot be avoided, even if we close our eyes. A change can be only delayed. Let's open our eyes and take the challenge to be successful in life. Those who fail to change are history. We can't always achieve new results using the old ways.

Burn the "Lock Fat" away - and maybe one day we awake one morning and find ourselves happy after experiencing times of blood, tears and sweat. Nothing comes from anything... .

Project PUSH: War on teaching reading, writing, arithmetic is back

The two-year disruption of the delivery of basic education and health services in this country has dramatically led to school closure. Distance learning doubled the learning loss which is normally observed when learners are not in school.

In school year 2022-2023, the school is faced with 1,671 beginner and 1, 605 letter readers among 3,004 Kinder to Grade 3 based on the ASER reading assessment. Primary teachers lament over the difficulty in teaching writing. Out of 2,567 Grade 3-6 learners tested using the PHIL-IRI, 869 of them are frustration readers in English and 1225 are classified as frustration level in Filipino.

The ASER Numeracy pretest given early in the school year yields 193 beginner or nonnumerates out of 5,507 total number of learners. Math got the lowest overall proficiency level of 29.25% from Grade 1-6 in the diagnostic test. The numbers indicate these learners are not yet grade level ready.

Following the progressive expansion of face-to-face classes, City Central School is practicing a learning recovery and continuity project with contextualized set of strategies and interventions in addressing the remaining gaps due to pandemic-related disruptions. One of its focus areas is learning remediation and intervention while strictly adhering to the required number of school days on the school calendar and activities (DO 34 s. 2022) to attain the learning standards.

This project titled PUSH (Pupil Upliftment through Supervised Help) is focused in the reading, writing and numeracy skills, gaps observed during the lockdowns and self-learning approach employed especially in the primary levels. This is a hybrid intervention of Project HOPE (Hastening the 3 Rs with Optimum Practice and Enrichment) of the Division of Cagayan de Oro and Project RxADOBE learning recovery plan of DepEd Region X.

The intervention is centered on the development/ enhancement of functional literacy and numeracy of the learners using explicit teaching method of instruction. It is a mix of 5-10 minutes simple learning activity before, during or after the lesson across all subject areas based on the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCS). Another dose of 30-minute to one-hour intervention for least learned skills in ENSCIMA will be given after classes while project Care for Normin Readers (CNR) which is a remediation for the challenged readers still continue. Buddy teaching is also employed from Grade 1-6 fast readers with their partners who are still lagging behind through the Bookworm Club initiative. Learners are given one on one help from their partner of the same age group which is considered more friendly and doable.

Considering that the primary learners are at a disadvantage due to the lack of in-person scaffolding of the

teachers where they develop the basics in reading, writing and numeracy and where learner develop independence, adopt new routines and develop meaningful relationships as well. Yet, the intermediate levels have the same turn-out primarily on their English, Science and Math proficiency levels. Explicit teaching plays a key role here to give direct, clear and guided instructions for remediation and intervention.

First, literacy skills like reading, speaking and writing can be used by learners as tools in learning other subject areas like Science and Math. This will create greater opportunities for further learning.

Second, numeracy can help learners access and understand the world around them. They will be able to apply mathematics in solving daily problems and make better choices in real life.

It is in this assumption that the war on reading, writing and arithmetic is now on. Teachers are in the frontline to arrest the decline of literacy and numeracy.

And the school is not alone in this crusade as we have intensified Brigada Pagbasa with the help of school partners. The city Mayor’s Office through Ms. Jane Nambatac with School Parents teachers Association has assisted learners to develop leadership in reading through trainings.

And together, Project PUSH will scaffold learners and help them obtain appropriate instruction and intervention to support their academic development

Beginning Reading Orientation Held at City Central School

“Parents are every child’s first teacher,” this was the famous quote last February 17, 2023 during the Beginning Reading Orientation of the non-readers and slow readers parents of Grade Two to Grade Six learners of City Central School. Separated into two sessions, Grades two and three from 8:00-11:00am while Grades four to six from 1:004:00pm. The event was attended by several parents in the morning afternoon.

The orientation began with a registration followed by the opening ceremony and welcomed by the two reading coordinators of grade one ang grade six. Mrs. Charito R. Jaraula, the person in charge of the City Central Reading Program inspired the parents to strive and focus more on their child’s future.

The importance of reading was cited by the City Central Teacher’s Club President, Mrs. Erlani B. Dy. She stated that regardless of the academic subject, whether it be language arts or even math, reading is crucial and acts as a fundamental building block for learning. Reading is an essential life ability, as seen by the necessity to read items like street signs and medications in daily life. Reading makes the brain stronger and enhances memory. Reading is a mental practice. It promotes children’s relaxation while providing doors to fresh information that will enrich their minds. Children who read have stronger cognitive abilities as they age. Everyone benefits from reading, not just kids and teenagers.

This is actually so true. Even I myself is a living testimony of how

I’ve came from non-reader to the best reader that I am today. I remember when I was in Grade I, my teacher called me up to read but I couldn’t read so instead of uttering the words, I cried. My teacher scolded me and I took it as a challenge. During lunch breaks I asked my classmate to teach me how to read. Viola! After days of sacrifice I belong to the best reading in class. Me, myself and I benefit from that moment of rising until this time as a reading coordinator of Grade III level of City Central School. City Central School endeavors to give non-readers and slow readers the best intervention they need. At their instructional level, reading intervention gives children the chance to improve their reading, writing, test-taking, and study skills. Every lesson is planned to accommodate each student’s unique needs in a small group setting. With this Beginning Reading Orientation parents were given the overview of the different interventions and even

themselves can apply to their child.

Parents were challenged by Mrs. Emelia D. Lago, City Central School Reading Consultant. In this approach, parents’ efforts to support schools are encouraged and parental involvement is increased and they are directly contributing to a great educational environment. Learners get the family support they need to cultivate a lifetime love of learning when families are actively involved in their children’s educational experiences.

Sir Duque A. Caguindangan, the City Central School Lead Principal gave a hop. Continue passing along your best traits to your kids so they can one day become excellent parents like you! The best teachers a child will ever have in life are their parents. For all the parents out there, thank you for making the world a better place than ever.Thanking all the parents for their support and continuous dedication in attaining zero non-readers for City Central School.

CLI ventures into co-living, opens The Pad in Q3 2023

Located within Banilad High Street, a 7,500 sqm mixed-use property along Banilad Road in Cebu, The Pad Co-Living is CLI’s first co-living space built for students and young professionals looking for a communal space and flexible housing option right at the heart of the bustling city.

The two-tower development features 256room accommodation available for long-term dormitory stays and hostel bookings of up to 440 persons.

The Pad Co-Living highlights a flexible room arrangement for single, double or multi-sharing occupancy for up to 4 people. Its fully furnished rooms, curated amenities and soon-to-open retail outlets are purposely built to provide those who are looking for shared living spaces together with people who have similar values, passion, stories, and ambitions.

Designed to complement the lifestyle of a young hardworking Cebuanos, each 15 sqm unit at The Pad Co-Living is complete with a bed with mattress, an ensuite toilet and bath, work desk and chair, closet and airconditioning.

The Pad Co-Living’s five-storey building is also adorned with an inhouse roof deck lounge, a shared cooking area, 24/7 security, free wifi access ideal for those with remote work. Adjacent to the building is a rooftop restaurant and swimming pool for hostel guests.

Teaching the alphabet to children

TEACHING the alphabet is foundational for reading and writing. Around the age of two, children are expressing interest in learning alphabet letters. While some kids learn letters very quickly, others need more repetition and time to learn letters.

Singing the alphabet song to your child introduces the alphabet to them in a fun way. Start singing to them as a baby and as they get older, encourage them to sing along (which they probably will do naturally.) Creating the alphabet with colorful bricks is a fun way for preschoolers to become more familiar with letters and enjoy a favorite playtime

Its strategic location along Banilad Road, Cebu City provides nearby access to central business districts, commercial and retail establishments and is structured along a national road, making it an easy walk or travel for future residents.

The property is a walk away from Cebu IT Park— a hub for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) firms, and a ride away from top educational institutions.

CLI chairman and CEO Jose Soberano III said: “We’re happy to unveil our first venture into co living. The Pad will provide a secure transient home

The Pad Co-Living highlights a flexible room arrangement for single, double or multi-sharing occupancy. Its fully furnished rooms, curated amenities, soon-to-open retail outlets, and additional storage spaces is purposely built to provide all a young professional needs in a home in the city.

to young professionals like IT-BPO workers and students seeking a well-located, affordable housing that they will be

proud of.

Cebu Landmasters has a total portfolio of 10 properties under CLI Hotels and Resorts.

Learning innovation

AS the workplace changes, so must education and training. Exciting experiments are under way. But are they enough?

activity—building!

Read all sorts of alphabet books to your children, even starting as babies. The repetition will help your child learn the alphabet at a young age. Letter recognition—also known as alphabet recognition—is the ability to: distinguish between the 26 letters of the alphabet.

If your child already knows “The Alphabet Song,” that is a great start! But there is more to letter recognition than being able to sing the ABCs. You want your child to be able to pick out the individual letters and name them, and that’s where the downloadable activities that follow really shine.

Importance of reading at an early age

EARLY reading ignites creativity, sparks curiosity, and stimulates the imagination in young children. Often, this leads to role-play as children grow which helps to develop other skills such as empathy, problem-solving, and morality.

Did you know that children develop more rapidly during the first 5 years of their lives than at any other time?

It’s true. That’s why this crucial period is known as ‘the foundation years.’

If you nurture certain skills during these first 5 years, you create a solid foundation from which your child can build

on for the rest of their life. Think of it as giving them a head start to learning. Talking about starting right, literacy is one of those skills that parents can nurture in those early years. Why literacy? Because reading and writing are the fundamentals of early education, not to mention that they crop up multiple times every single day. From reading road signs and writing shopping lists to learning a new language, literacy is a skill that is vital for everyone. But why exactly is reading so important during a child’s early years? Reading helps

to develop a young child’s brain. Vital connections in the brain are made very early in life and when stimulated, these form the basis of all future learning and intellectual ability. To put this simply, reading to your children at a young age stimulates these brain cells and each time it strengthens them and they form connections with even more brain cells. Stimulating your young child’s brain cells through these early experiences will help them to become better listeners, readers, and communicators as well as instilling a lifelong love of learning.

As technology transforms the workplace, the need for innovation in learning and development is urgent. Seeking innovations in learning, we inhabitants of the Information Age reflexively turn our eyes to technology. Rightly so, given the vast improvements technology has brought to our lives.

But an innovation is a different way of doing something that is also a better way of doing something. In education, an innovation is a deviation from the standard practice even equal or lesser amounts of time and resources. Innovation does not always involve a mechanical, electronic or digital device. To condense a few historical narratives, we may say that Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity. Thomas

Edison invented the light bulb. John Travolta danced to innovative disco lights. Or more to our point, Alan Turing discovered computing. Steve Jobs invented the iPad. And educators made use of the iPad in blended learning. If proved more effective than the standard practice of teacher-directed, face to face instruction, blended learning is an innovation in learning. So any new device is really just an invention. The innovation is its successful use.

Tiktok as destressors for teachers

These days, teachers are rising to fame on TikTok, a social networking site for posting short films. And some of them claim that the platform functions during COVID as a sort of online teaching lounge.

But is the presence of classroom teachers on a website known for jokes, dancing crazes, and other irreverent content beneficial to the teaching profession?

A teacher’s well-liked TikTok video has prompted the Department of Education (DepEd) to request that its regional office in Central Luzon investigate it for “insinuating a potential child abuse action.”

According to the DepEd, the instructor, whose name and school were concealed by the government, will face “appropriate sanctions” if necessary.

Our teachers and nonteaching staff are required under the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards in all of our words and deeds, including our social media activity.

All of our teachers and nonteaching employees are required to adhere to the professional teachers’ code of ethics at all

times. DepEd Child Protection Policy in DepEd Order No 40 s. 2012 clearly states that the department does not tolerate any forms of abuse towards children.

TikTok for teachers has become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon. There is a lot more to learn about this platform, from its influence to its work in bringing concerns to light.

With more than 800 million active users as of July of this year, TikTok has grown into one of the biggest social media applications in the world. Unlike other social media platforms, TikTok is a safe space for teachers alike because creators have chosen to be open about topics related to stress and mental health. Because of this, their influence gets a wider scope and reach.

Giving users the option to “duet” videos and “react” in which one person shares personal experiences and others respond by offering advise is another way it has evolved into a secure area. Although some cyberbullying still happens, users can assist in policing their members. It satisfies the desire to fit in and values individuality.

Additionally, a lot of teacher developers have been able to launch side hussle on the platform. People who were over 18 joined up for it when TikTok announced their $1 billion creator fund, which was intended to “thank creators for the effort and dedication they put into generating amusing, motivating, and uplifting material for the Tiktok community.

Mikmik, a teacher-tiktoker from Misamis Oriental has more than a million followers and 11. 8M views, has a large following due to her fun content inside and outside the classroom.

TikTok is not just another well-known app for teachers to destress, it has provided freedom for them to express thoughts and opinions and share best practices too inside the classroom.

Tiktok as a virtual lounge is a powerful tool that can make or unmake a teacher. Onlike backlash is likely because one you post a video it becomes a public property. Sound judgment is the center of the issue at hand for teachers who met the public ire due to their posts. The maxim think before you click still holds water.

RI 3870 holds district team training seminar

THE Rotary International District 3870 spearheaded by District Governor-Elect Gilda “Gigi” Go held a district team training seminar recently at Grand Caprice Convention Center in Cagayan de Oro City.

“To all the incoming district officers who traveled

from afar to attend the district team training seminar, daghan kaayong salamat. I am excited and looking forward to an exciting new Rotary Year ahead where we, all together, strive to create and bring hope to the world starting from where we are – within our families, then our very own communities, then ultimately, the world,”

Advantages of eating peanuts

DAILY consumption of nuts such as pistachios, peanuts and walnuts may improve cognition, healing, learning, memory and other key brain functions, a study claims.

Researchers found that some nuts stimulated several brain frequencies more than others.

Pistachios, for instance, produced the greatest gamma wave response, which is critical for enhancing cognitive processing, information retention, learning, perception and rapid eye movement during sleep, they said.

Peanuts, which are actually legumes, but were still part of the study, produced the highest delta response, which is associated with healthy immunity, natural healing, and deep sleep.

Researchers found variances between the six nut varieties tested, all of them were high in beneficial antioxidants, with walnuts containing the highest antioxidant concentrations of all.

Prior studies have demonstrated that nuts benefit the body in several significant ways: protecting the heart, fighting cancer, reducing inflammation and slowing the ageing process.

This study provides significant beneficial findings by demonstrating that nuts are as good for your brain as they are for the rest of your body.

Future studies could reveal that they make other contributions to the brain and nervous system as well.

The team developed a pilot study using consenting subjects who consumed almonds, cashews, peanuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts.

Electroencephalograms (EEG) were taken to measure the strength of brainwave signals. EEG wave band activity was then recorded from nine regions of the scalp associated with cerebral cortical function.

Eating more nuts and seeds may be good for the brain, as these foods contain omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.

A 2014 study found that a higher overall nut intake was linked to better brain function in older age.

Nuts and seeds are also rich sources of the antioxidant vitamin E, which protects cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

As a person ages, their brain may be exposed to this form of oxidative stress, and vitamin E may therefore support brain health in older age.

A 2014 review found that vitamin E may also contribute to improved cognition and reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Fully exploring vitamin E’s effects on the brain will require further research.

Go said.

“Let us always remember that by simple things are great things brought to pass.”

Go thanked incoming district trainer PDG Fe “Bing” Juarez and district team training seminar chairman Luzmar Gabor for managing the event and to the special guest of honor

Governor Angelo Ladub.

Go’s home club is the Rotary Club of Kalayaan Cagayan de Oro. Rotary International District 3870 is composed of 44 clubs from Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Camiguin and Cagayan de Oro City.

Ilocos Norte readies for return of cruise tourism

LAOAG CITY

– Travel op-

erators can look forward to welcoming more visitors in Ilocos Norte province as the Department of Tourism (DOT) started talks with cruise line operators to once again consider stopping by this northern gateway

of Luzon.

"Talks are underway between cruise line operators and the DOT for their return at the ports of Currimao and a nearby private seaport of Omnico Resources Inc. in Badoc, Ilocos Norte,” said Xavier Ruiz, officer-in-charge of

the Ilocos Norte Tourism Office.

For 2023, the DOT is expecting a total of 139 port calls at 46 destinations in the country. The figure is higher than the 102 port

Impact of school feeding program

SCHOOL feeding as initiated by the Department of Education is not enough for our school-aged children to have proper nutrition. The Philippines has lots of colleges offering nutrition courses and degree holders of these programs can certainly help out the massive number of public schoolchildren in the country.

it must be discouraged for school canteens to sell sodas and other non-nutritious stuff.

Stress management at work

WHAT is stress? Stress

is nothing else but your body’s response to mental or emotional pressure.

Some stress may be good as it can make one perform better to overcome the situation or situations that are causing it. When we are not able to manage stress and let it get the better of us, then it becomes a problem and now we have to find ways of managing. Otherwise, it takes us down or puts us in a worse situation, say depression. When stress overwhelms us, it will damage our relationships, our moods and as mentioned earlier, have a very negative impact on our health. The effects of stress on our bodies are immense. If we are under prolonged stress, our immune system can be

compromised, making us susceptible to frequent infections. Even viral illnesses like the common cold and flu will be prevalent.

Stress affects our muscles.

They tense up when we are stressed. This is the body’s way of guarding itself against injury. With taut muscles, tenstiontype headaches are very common.

The heart beats faster when one is under stress. This in effect can trigger other conditions like asthma or panic attacks.

Continued levels of high stress can have adverse effects on the heart and the other organs related to it. These can lead to problems with blood pressure, having adverse effects on other organs of the body.

And it is worthy to note that private schools must do their part to churn out nutritious food to their students in their respective cafeterias. Well the phenomenon is not just limited to elementary schools actually. To sustain the nutrition of their students, high school students must also be entitled to nutritious food as well. That’s why

TIME is the continuous sequence of events that take place in apparently irreversible succession from the past, through the present, to the future.

Time plays a significant role in human life. If you understand the value of time better, you can gain experience and develop skills over time.

A person lives in this world within a time that is expressed in the same matter, for ten years ago you were not the same as you are today, neither in your appearance, nor in your knowledge, nor in your experiences, everything around you changes with the passage of time. Time is related to all that is going on around us, so we often hear about the time

dimension, because time is an essential element of life. Time represents special milestones, including birthdays, anniversaries and the birth of babies and helps us organize our daily lives and activities, so we can live a more organized and productive life.

From sunset till night, high tide and low tide due to the moon, the four seasons everything is completely time dependent.

Human life is measured by time, and the cycle of the sun, moon and earth is known as time, and through time we know the year, month, week, day, hour, minute, second and parts thereof, and each time helps us to calculate the speeds of objects and the like.

Education trends

Do you still remember the first time you join a club? Well, for these little fellas joining is part of their adventure in life. They were motivated, trained and chosen from among the five thousand plus learners of City Central School.

February 25, 2023 marks the very special day of the City Central School Bookworm Club School Year 2022-2023.

Held at City Central School, a total of 250 fast readers and fast learners received the certificate of recognition as a proof of their hard work and dedication

during three Saturdays training. Hard work is ingrained in our educational culture. We firmly believe it is a quality that can be taught, developed, and ultimately mastered to ensure that students are the drivers of their own success, knowing that dedication to a skill, craft, or discipline can result in the most amazing rewards and adulations. This quality is widely considered to be inherently personality based.

Trainer Jane Nambatac and District Reading Coor-

dinator, Analiza V. Sabello served with dedication and wholeheartedly pour out their God given talents in providing the Bookworm Clubbers the best training they get. Kids who go through healthy discipline acquire other techniques to satisfy their demands. Children need to receive the appropriate training in to nurture their challenge, emotion, and selfregulation skills.

CCS Bookworm Club Culmination was a fun filled, rewarding and the start of a bookie adventure! Yey!

THE following are just some of the educational trends. Creating future-ready networks for future-ready students – preparing students for the tech-based workforce proves to be an ongoing impetus for the future of K-12 education. A robust infrastructure – including strong wireless networks – is a requirement for supporting and sustaining any updates to education technology. Building a strong, scalable network is the first step to

establishing a future-ready school. But schools should always be ready to change both their thinking and their networks for whatever the future brings. Another component of getting students ready for the future is making sure they are using technology as they might in the real world.

Embracing computer science education for all students – in the coming years, we should build on that progress by offering student the hands-on

computer science and math classes that make them job ready on Day One. Some educators have embraced computational thinking –thinking like a computer and using concepts of computer science to solve problems – with and without technology in order to demystify the topic for the youngest of students. Tech tools like Minecraft: Education Edition have also given students the benefit of learning engineering skills through play.

Stupid...

from page 4

clock has been set at oneminute before midnight as the earth is now phasing its 6th extinction. In the Philippines, its stand is not to reduce but to continue the massive operations of coal-fired power plants especially here in Mindanao where we have some 7 coal plants.

The truth is, that paradigm of the economy over the environment is now being debunked worldwide especially by concerned citizens in the US who are initiating a world-shift.

Even His Holiness, Pope Francis, in his latest Encyclical, Laudatu Si’, has questioned that moneymust-grow principle. Yes money must be used not to make more money but to enhance the quality of life of the people.

In fact, no less than the United Nations has issued the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to stop poverty, stop social injustices

and inequities, protect the environment, etc. underscoring the importance of the environment as the Sustainable Development Goals give high preferential treatment to the plight of Mother Earth. It is not the economy, anymore but the environment that is of utmost importance. The truth is, in the absence of a major change, the global system will collapse in less than one hundred years because of the unsustainability in the economy where only a few oligarchs are in control and the unsustainability in the ecology. Yes, global warming, melting of the iceberg, the extinction of the species, the rising of the oceans and the depletion of the ozone layer are concrete proof and evidence that we are now facing our own extinction.

Don’t you know that for every one Celsius increase in global temperature, there will be a corresponding 10% reduction in food production. As the earth warms,

Personalized learning environment

TEACHERS are always finding ways to integrate new strategies into their teaching. Nowadays, in-person and virtual learning is made possible and convenient with all the technological innovations. One of the most frequently used and reliable teaching aids are interactive videos. The use of interactive videos guarantees effective and efficient learning for students and teachers. They can be easily accessed anytime, anywhere. Convenience is just the least that these educational videos can offer, given that they impact both parties in ways that flat videos and pre-pandemic classes couldn’t.

Personalized learning experience is a way of personalizing one’s learning experi-

ence. Interactive videos offer participants a sense of user control in a way that allows them to design and organize their virtual learning environment and experience. They can watch and learn from these videos at their own pace without pressure from teachers or classmates. Plus, they always have a choice to either jump to advance contents of the topic or stick to the given basics. Interactive videos focus more on selfdirectorya nd self decision making.

As mentioned, interactive videos offer convenience to students and teachers. Since they can be delivered and completed virtually, they are perfect for online and blended learning.

SCIENTIFIC LITERACY OF SECONDARY SCIENCE TEACHERS OF CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY

The study aims to assess the level of scientific literacy of secondary science teachers of Cagayan de Oro City. The test for scientific literacy is anchored on science curriculum goals: (a) demonstrate scientific attitude and values, (b) demonstrate scientific knowledge and application, and (c) demonstrate scientific inquiry skills. The survey questionnaire was distributed to 14 public National High Schools of Cagayan de Oro City, with 147 teacher-respondents. The study was conducted amid the Covid-19 pandemic, there were restrictions and protocols to follow, and there were limitations as well. The data collected was analyzed and used a descriptive statistical technique to calculate the frequencies, means, and standard deviation of the data. The result reveals that

the level of secondary science teachers in demonstrating scientific attitude and values is high (M= 3.77, SD= 0.28), and their level in demonstrating scientific knowledge and application is high (M=22.42, SD= 5.03), and the level of science teachers in demonstrating scientific inquiry skills is average (M=18.31, SD= 5.01). The overall level of scientific literacy is High. A correlation was used to determine if there was a significant relationship existed. The demographic profiles of the teachers are not significant to the level of scientific literacy. The result also reveals that the majority of their age range between 36-40 years old, and many pursue master’s degrees. Those who want to study the same as this can focus on the predictors that affect their scientific literacy.

the insects’ bites will become more fatal and can reach high altitude. It has been forecasted by scientists that in the next 50 years, earth will increase its temperature that will empower the insects to reach very high altitude. Example, the inhabitants of Bhopal must leave their country for reason of pestilence to seek refuge in Nepal but Nepal during that time will already be under water.

Yes, the environment must now take precedence over the economy that promotes so much consumerism and unbridled materialism otherwise famine, pestilence, war and death as biblically revealed by Evangelist John will be the order of the day. Our Indigenous Peoples are in fact correct when they said, “ANG KINAIYAHAN DILI LAMANG TINUBDAN SA KINABUHI KUNG

DILI MAO GAYUD ANG KINABUHI!” Yes, it is not the economy but the environment, stupid!

The Value of Play: How Children Learn While Having Fun

One of the most crucial components of a child’s existence is play. Playing games like patty-cake, peek-a-boo, and house helps kids develop their creative thinking and social skills. Through play, they acquire a variety of emotional skills, grow physically, and learn how to process the outside environment.

Play is crucial because it offers a fundamental basis for learning, discovering, solving problems, and developing an understanding of the world and your place in it. Children can practice skills and imitate what they see while playing. Play helps kids learn how to interact and communicate with others and provides an outlet for their creativity and exploration.

Critical thinking abilities and healthy development are encouraged through

play. Play encourages kids to pretend, create, and dream. It also helps kids learn cause and effect and helps them explore the world and their place in it.

Play improves kids physically in a number of ways, particularly in the growth of their fine and gross motor skills. Running, jumping, swimming, constructing with blocks, dancing, riding bikes, and climbing trees are a few examples of physical play. (When you’re giving people the chance to participate in these kinds of activities, keep in mind important safety concerns, such bike helmet use and pool monitoring.) Play is essential to your child’s growth, to put it briefly. When they play, kids learn. Play eases tension. Overall, play is linked to reactions that support learning.

Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Challenges

While all curriculum areas share some of the same issues and concerns, math teachers have issues that are specific with regard to students. Most students can read and write by the middle elementary school years. Math, however, can be intimidating to students, particularly as they advance from basic addition and subtraction to fractions and even to algebra and geometry. To help math teachers cope with these issues, this list looks at the top 10 concerns for math teachers, along with some possible answers.

Math curriculum often builds on information learned in previous years. If a student does not have the required

Cabugao town, Ilocos Sur province. It was the first international cruise ship that arrived at the Ilocos port in three years since the pandemic began.

As part of the government’s economic recovery plans, both the Salomague port in Ilocos Sur and the Currimao port in Ilocos Norte were upgraded in 2021 to increase cruise calls in the region, which is strategically located

near the popular beaches and heritage sites of the Ilocos Region. With the continuing expansion of the Vigan Airport and the Laoag International Airport, as well as the road widening projects, local authorities expressed confidence that the improved port will entice more visitors and help spur economic recovery in the region. Reading carousel

This is one of my all-time favorite activities to do with my students! It’s a “Reading is Thinking” carousel activity and students love it. (“Carousel” because students are moving in a circular pattern from, in this case, poster to poster.) I like to save this one for the end of the year, you know...when testing is done, summer is looming over our shoulders and the kids are going a bit stir crazy. The best part about this activity... it’s SILENT!

This past year I worked with 5th and 6th graders, but I’ve also done this with third and fourth graders. This is what you’ll need... short poems or book excerpts of varying levels, each one taped to a large piece of light colored construction paper, chart paper, marker(s) and various colored pens or pencils.

Here is how it goes... In a

whole group setting (I always pull them to the carpet), I explain that reading is more than just reading the words on the page, reading is THINKING! When we are engaged with the text and thinking about the text, that is when we are truly reading. Some things that readers do while reading are (list a couple of strategies) ask questions & make predictions. I then ask them to think about other things readers think about as they read. As students share their thoughts, I jot them down on the chart paper. Writing down their thoughts allows them to SEE the various strategies. It also sets them up with ideas about what they can be thinking about during the reading portion of the activity, as well as serves as a reference. (This part of the activity supports your struggling readers, and it sets them up for success.)

prerequisite knowledge, then a math teacher is left with the choice of either remediation or forging ahead and covering material the student might not understand. Consumer math is easily connected to daily life. However, it can often be hard for students to see the connection between their lives and geometry, trigonometry, and even basic algebra. When students do not see why they have to learn a topic, this impacts their motivation and retention. Teachers can get around this by giving reallife examples showing where students might use the math concepts being taught, particularly in upper-level math.

Psychologists at the University of California, Berkeley, say these absurd-sounding questions might help us better understand what’s at the heart of some of society’s most vexing arguments.

Research published online Thursday in the journal Open Mind shows that our concepts about and associations with even the most basic words vary widely. At the same time, people tend to significantly overestimate how many others hold the same conceptual beliefs—the mental groupings we create as shortcuts for understanding similar objects, words or events.

It’s a mismatch that researchers say gets at the heart of the most heated debates, from the courtroom to the dinner table.

The results offer an explanation for why people talk past

each other. When people are disagreeing, it may not always be about what they think it is. It could be stemming from something as simple as their concepts not being aligned. Simple questions like, “What do you mean?” can go a long way in preventing a dispute from going off the rails. Disagreements about word meanings aren’t new. From interpretations of the Constitution to definitions about what a fact is, semantic disputes have long been at the center of legal, philosophical and linguistic thinking. Cognitive psychologists have likewise studied these differences in how people perceive and describe the world. The accumulation of our lived experiences affects how we conceptualize the world and helps explain why two people approach problems in different ways—or even agree if something is a problem in the first place.

donates 200 toilets to two barangays in Impasug.ong Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier

On March 21, 2023, Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier (RCCDO Premier) headed by its President, Maybelle Abogado-Quilnat, one of the 15 Rotary Clubs in Cagayan de Oro, donated 200 toilets to 95 families of Sitio Intavas, Brg. La Fortuna and 105 families of Brg. Kibenton of Impasug-ong, Bukidnon. This project, a collaboration among the LGU of Impasug-ong, Del Monte Foundation, Inc (DMFI) and RC CDO Premier, is in support to Zero Extreme Poverty 2030 (ZEP2030). ZEP 2030 is a civil societyled movement that aims to uplift 1 million Filipino families from extreme poverty to self-sufficiency by 2030. Using the Poverty Probability Index survey tool, it was found that 200 families in La Fortuna and Kibenton do not have sanitary toilets and are extremely poor.

Through the efforts of DMFI, under its Execu -

tive Director, Maria Bella Victoria Quimpo, the club partnered with the Local Government of Impasugong and the residents of Brgys. La Fortuna and Kibenton to address the lack of toilet facilities for these identified families. The partnership puts an end to the practice of “open defecation” and leads the community in the building, maintenance and use of basic toilets. The beneficiaries shall be engaged to nurture and apply good hygiene practices. These endeavors will essentially prevent diseases and ensure better health among community residents. It shall also help in the improvement of the living conditions of the identified extremely poor. The club provided all the construction materials while the LGU provided the sand and gravel. The beneficiary-families provided the labor. DMFI will continue to monitor the construction of the toilets

as well as the families’ continued adherence to good hygiene practices.

In order to provide for the construction materials, the club initiated a donation drive which was overwhelmingly sup-

ported by other Rotary Clubs in Cagayan de Oro, namely: Rotary Club of Kalayaan Cagayan de Oro under the leadership of President Lilibeth Layagon, Rotary Club of East Urban under President

Through the efforts of the club members, the

club was also able to get donations from friends and family members. The club commemorates Rotary International’s Water and Sanitation month with this project.
