Court Issues TRO Against Former President of Gold Mining Firm in Agusan Sur

A temporary restraining order (TRO) was issued against Raul Villanueva for continuing to represent Philsaga Mining Corporation (PMC) and hindering position takeover despite the termination of his contract on February 15.

The TRO was issued by Regional Trial Court (RTC)

Judge Rowena Apao-Adlawan and was served by Sheriff Teresita Ceballos at PMC’s administration building.

Villanueva, who is no longer part of the company’s Board of Directors, sold to Joseph Mahusay his shares of stocks with Philsaga Management and Holdings, amounting to 125,000 common

shares.

Mahusay, the current and legal president of PMC, filed a writ of injunction against Villanueva due to the latter’s violation of the employment contract with X64, the Australian partner company of PMC, which holds 40% of their shares.

In a memorandum issued

to the PMC employees last March 28, the X64 Board sought to continue its business operations and conduct a full internal audit of the existing policies to ensure maximum efficiency.

“In view of these changes, it is imperative that while we continue with business as usual, all employees should

Filipinos urged to live out our ancestors’ vision with integrity

MANILA – President Ferdi-

nand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday expressed solidarity with the Filipino people in commemorating the 125th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence.

“This historic day confirmed what our forebears have religiously kept in their hearts: That we are the inheritors of the glorious heroism and nobility that our ancestors have demonstrated throughout our long and storied history,” he said in his message for the occasion.

Marcos also encouraged Filipinos to assert this freedom and strive for excellence and integrity in all aspects of life.

“Later, with new oppressors and challenges, our people remained defiant--affirming that it is our core to defend what is ours. And with all that, this occasion symbolizes and entails, we understand better now that liberty will not flourish on its own; freedom will not materialize unless it is declared boldly, believed sincerely, and demonstrated passionately,” said Marcos.

Marcos said in an age where battles remain, it is necessary to take the immeasurable courage and loss that came out of the

The Board also highlighted that the actions of the mentioned individuals would not impact the con-

tinuity of their operations. However, Villanueva continues representing himself as PMC president in business negotiations, bargaining agreements, and induction ceremonies. He has also propagated dubious claims against the Board in an open letter distributed to over 2,000 company workers.

The glaring painful truism that humanity has given high veneration to the profit motive that has already captured the mindset of all governments, all institutions, all universities and even of religious groups, it has become imperative to trailblaze the awakening process or else Mother Earth (GAIA) will face the inevitable: its 6the extinction. Noam Chomsky, described by New York Times as “the most important intellectual alive, described that the plight of human civilization as “racing towards the precipice.” The doomsday clock of Mother Earth was set to at one minute before midnight. The cause: the disbelief in the scientific consensus over climate change by all governments, the mainstream media and religious groups.” Indeed, the conscious refusal of the dominant players – governments, corporations and the media – to act with purpose helps to answer the questions, “where is the human outcry for earth’s life-support? Why have we failed to seize control of our survival?”

as “a sin against God.” Two years ago during the COP26 Climate Change Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, no less than the late Queen Elizabeth was so furious blaming governments’ inaction against climate change stating that “there should be legal action against governments for the crime of omission to protect the right to life of their populations. Apparent is the ongoing political and media efforts to suppress climate change as a crisis: by denial, by under-reporting solutions to it.”

Indeed, it is an unprecedented crime against humanity as the contemporaneous development paradigm called neo-liberal capitalism being advanced by corporate globalization continuously sacrifices Mother Earth and humanity to the altar of greed and profit. We are now in the 23rd year of the 21st century but we do not know whether we will reach the 22nd century which is only 77 years from now. Every day, a thousand hectares of the 386-meter high iceberg are melting in the Arctic and the Antarctic that is giving rise to the ocean level. to environmentalists, there will just be 3,000 islands fifty years from now. Some 100 species of flora and fauna are becoming extinct everyday due to climate change as billions have already become extinct. This is especially true in our country which has been considered by FAO as the richest on earth with regards to biodiversity but have been erased from the face of the earth as we have lost the 17 million hectares of dipterocarp forest in just a century due to massive illegal logging. Don’t you know that the number of flora and fauna found in just 5,000 hectare Mt. Kitanglad Range is far greater compared to those found in one billion-hectare continent of North America?

Based on an Oxfam Study, the most flawed species of all of God’s creation is the Homo Sapiens (human beings) as that species was responsible in killing its own kind at the tune of 150 million in 20th century alone out of two world wars and

Yes, what it reminds us of is that we need to reflect and channel the very Trinitarian life of God in our own life. That means that just as in God there are three persons who are perpetually engaged in perfect knowing and loving, we too should try our best to know and love God and everybody else all our life the way God knows and loves himself and all his creation, especially us.

Mario Rosete

Obviously, in our case, this perpetual process of knowing and loving will have a beginning, but it is supposed to end up by being carried up in the perpetual knowing and loving of God in heaven. Here on earth, we should just try our best to live that process as far as we can.

tarian life has towards us. Or said in another way, we can only follow Christ’s commandment if we have the same sentiment God in his Trinitarian life has towards us.

And what is that divine sentiment? We are clearly told about it in the gospel of this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity that this year falls on June 4. (cfr. Jn 3,16-18)

“God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life,” the gospel says. “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.”

And the way to do that is to follow what Christ himself told us as the new commandment we need to live, and that is to love one another as he himself has loved us. Following that new commandment of Christ would necessarily link us in a living way to God the Father and the God the Holy Spirit in the way Christ is linked with these two other persons in the Trinitarian God.

If we truly follow Christ’s commandment, then we would have the same sentiment that God in his Trini-

We as persons are patterned after the Trinitarian persons of God. Like God, we have to know God and everybody else, as far as we can, the way God the Father knows himself and everybody else.

We should try that our knowledge of God and of everybody and everything else should be as perfect as God knows himself and everybody else. This perfect divine knowledge is personified in God the Son, who as God who became man offers us the “way, the truth and the life.”

We have to be properly known the way God the Son, the pattern of our humanity, is known perfectly by the Father. In other words, our knowledge of God and everybody else should go as faithfully as possible as the knowledge God has of himself and of everybody and everything else --a knowledge that is personified in the Son.

And we have to love God and everybody else the way God loves himself and everybody and everything else, as personified in the Holy Spirit. This is what Trinity Sunday in the end reminds us of.

In the above-cited gospel, we are told that only when we believe in Christ, “the way, the truth and the life” for us, can we avoid condemnation. (cfr. Jn 3,18) And believing in Christ precisely involves the process of knowing and loving God the way Christ knows and loves God and everybody else. Only then can we reflect and channel God’s Trinitarian life in our life.

DBP offers credit assistance to expand water sources amid El Niño

MANILA – The state-owned Development of the Bank of the Philippines (DBP) has offered to provide credit assistance to water districts, local government units, and water utility firms to expand production capacity and explore additional water sources amid the looming onset of the El Niño phenomenon.

The DBP funding assistance would be channeled under its pioneering Water for Every Resident (WATER) program, which was designed specifically to support projects that would provide affordable water

supply at the community level, DBP president and chief executive officer Michael O. de Jesus said in a news release Saturday.

“DBP’s broad experience in bankrolling water supply projects would be a boon to our collective efforts to find suitable and sustainable solutions to address the rising demand for an important natural resource, such as water,” de Jesus said.

The DBP is the eighth largest bank in the country in terms of assets and provides credit support to four strategic sectors of the economy – infrastructure

and logistics; micro, small and medium enterprises; the environment; and social services and community development.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has raised the El Niño Alert, which it expects to emerge by June and persist until the first quarter of next year.

The weather phenomena may cause below-normal rainfall conditions and entail dry spells and droughts in some areas of the country.

De Jesus pointed out that DBP WATER has already

Education For All : Reaching the Unreached and Underserved

When we talk about reaching the underserved and unreached, we mean people who are disadvantaged or have a difficult time getting an education. Children who live in inaccessible rural areas, people with disabilities, girls who experience gender-based discrimination, refugees and displaced people, and those who are poor might all fall under this category. We can enable people to break the cycle of poverty, expand their perspectives, and meaningfully contribute to their communities by addressing these hurdles and providing educational opportunities to these populations. It is impossible to exaggerate the value of education for everyone. Individuals who pursue education get the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities necessary to make intelligent decisions, take part in worthwhile endeavors, and actively contribute to society. It acts as a catalyst for societal and individual progress, promoting economic expansion, social solidarity, and sustainable growth.

On the other hand, a comprehensive strategy is needed to reach the

unreached. It requires locating and removing the barriers preventing marginalized populations from gaining access to education. Physical accessibility must be ensured by infrastructure development, such as building schools and enhancing transit systems. A welcoming and secure learning environment must also address socio-cultural obstacles like prejudice, discriminatory practices, and gender biases. The caliber of instruction offered is an additional important factor. It is crucial to guarantee that schools in poor communities have qualified teachers, sufficient resources, and a curriculum that is current and sensitive to community needs. A holistic approach to education should foster not only cognitive capabilities but also social-emotional competencies, creativity, and critical thinking. Moreover, the realization of universal education is dependent on cooperation and partnerships. For comprehensive plans, resource mobilization, and intervention implementation, collaboration between governments, non-governmental organizations,

“DBP is one with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s call for unified action while ensuring a protocolbased and science-driven approach to address the possible impact of the El Niño phenomena at the short-term and the demand for reliable and potable water supply in the longterm,” de Jesus said. Reaching the unreached can be made possible in tremendous ways by technology. Access to highquality education and the promotion of lifelong learning could be made possible via digital platforms, online learning tools, and mobile applications. We can reach isolated populations, provide flexible learning options, and close the achievement gap by utilizing technology. Indeed, it takes time and effort to provide education to the underprivileged and unreached. It needs a long-term commitment, political determination, and sufficient funding for education systems. It asks that we promote social justice and equity while addressing the underlying causes of educational gaps. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY

– Three barangays in this city have been chosen as pilot areas for anti-child labor programs to be implemented in partnership with a non-government organization.

During its launching on Friday, World Vision Field Coordinator Jovie Sorongon identified the barangays as Puntod, Cugman, and Gusa.

“These barangays will receive starter kits on June 12 during the Kalayaan Job Fair,” Sorongon said.

The job fair forms part of the 125th Independence Day celebration on June 12 organized by the Department of Labor and Employment in Northern Mindanao Region (DOLE-10), the partner agency of World Vision, which also observes the World Day Against Child Labor.

DOLE-10 Director Estrella Uy-Pahalla said together with World Vision, they will turn over PHP3,000 worth of certificates of awards for the livelihood starter kits to 100 parents or guardians of child laborers from the pilot villages.

Cugman Barangay Chair Wendilyn Escobia said the village council profiled 79 child laborers in 2022 which was mitigated through their intervention.

“There were 23 new cases profiled this year (2023) and would be recipients of DOLE-10 and World Vision’s distribution of livelihood starter kits on Independence Day,” Escobia said.

Meanwhile, Puntod Barangay Councilor Joy Amarga reported that there are 135 child laborers identified since last year in their village alone. (PNA)

Through their 6.6 Sale as well as other Mega Sales, Lazada is once again showing their commitment to their sellers. More than just a Mega Sale, the heart of the campaign is to provide a platform for their sellers to increase their sales, earn extra income, and expose them to different kinds of shoppers. For many sellers, Lazada has become a reliable source of income, especially during these challenging times. With the pandemic affecting businesses globally, e-commerce has become a lifeline for many entrepreneurs. Lazada understands this and has been continuously improving their platform to help sellers reach their full potential.

One of the ways Lazada supports their sellers is by providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

From marketing support to training programs, Lazada has made it their mission to help their sellers grow and thrive. In fact, they recently instilled the ‘Kaya Mo Yan’ mindset among their sellers. The said mindset aims to foster confidence, self-belief, and resilience among sellers.

establishments, he added.

As part of the fight against child labor, DOLE, through the Integrated Livelihood Program, has awarded livelihood starter kits to a number of parents of child laborers as assistance.

“As we encourage their parents and families to bring their children out from child labor, it is also important that we provide them with the necessary assistance to empower them economically, as poverty remains to be the primary reason why these children are forced to engage in laborious and sometimes hazardous kinds of work,” Guzman said.

He added that the recipients were regularly monitored by DOLE field offices to ensure that their livelihood projects are sustained and generated income for their families.

In celebration of the World Day Against Child Labor on June 12, he said that DOLE will lead advocacy and orientation lectures and gift-giving activities simultaneously in all provinces in the region with some 600 profiled children.

Other activities include the distribution of food packs, medicines, clothes, and coin banks as well as mascot shows, puppet

shows, film viewing, art exhibit, and storytelling sessions will also give entertainment to children these events, he added.

Meanwhile, in Negros Oriental, the province will also mark the Independence Day celebration with an emphasis on child laborers and interventions to be carried out to address the problem.

DOLE-Negros Oriental provincial director Ma. Teresa Tanquiamco told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Friday that on top of the usual local and overseas jobs fair, this year’s celebration will also include World Day Against Child Labor.

“We have identified 25 parents of child laborers to participate in this year’s activity, which includes skills assessment to determine the best livelihood package for each one of them,” she said in part Cebuano.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will help in the assessment and also provide them with the necessary training so they may qualify for government assistance, she added.

Since last year, DOLE has already profiled more or less 7,000 child laborers across the province.

Millennium Development Goals in the Philippines: Progress and Challenges

The Millennium Development Goals were a set of eight global development targets established by the United Nations. These goals aimed to address key issues such as poverty, education, healthcare, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. In the Philippines, significant efforts have been made to achieve these goals.

First is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. One of the primary goals of the MDGs was to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. In the Philippines, poverty remains a significant challenge. However, the country has made notable progress in reducing poverty rates over the years. Through programs like the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), which provides conditional cash transfers to impoverished families, the government has managed to uplift many out of extreme poverty. Second, to achieve universal primary education. Access to education has improved in the Philippines, with efforts focused on achieving universal primary education. The government has implemented programs to increase enrollment rates and reduce dropout rates. Despite these efforts, challenges such as limited infrastructure, inadequate resources, and a high student-teacher ratio persist, particularly in rural areas. Ongoing efforts are needed to ensure quality education for all

Filipino children. Third is to promote gender equality and empower women. Fourth is focus on gender equality and women’s empowerment are crucial aspects of the MDGs. The Philippines has taken significant steps towards promoting gender equality. Fourth is to reduce child mortality. The Philippines has made remarkable progress in reducing child mortality rates. Improvements in healthcare services, immunization programs, and access to clean water and sanitation have contributed to this achievement. Despite this progress, challenges such as inadequate healthcare facilities and resources in remote areas still need to be addressed to ensure further reduction in child mortality rates. Fifth is to improve maternal health. Improving maternal health was another important MDG. The Philippines has taken measures to enhance access to reproductive healthcare services, promote family planning, and reduce maternal mortality rates. However, geographical disparities, cultural factors, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure pose challenges to ensuring comprehensive maternal health services throughout the country. Seventh is to combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Other Diseases. Significant efforts have been made to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases in the Philippines. The gov-

with public and private agencies.

"It is aligned with the message of our DENR Secretary to have partnerships with the government sectors. It is important that the general public have access to our services, and as government workers, we are very happy with this initiative," said Adoranado.

He sees the partnership as very helpful, particularly to those sectors that have limited knowledge of utilizing the advancement of technologies and the challenges in the digitalization efforts of the SEC.

Enopia, in his response, expressed his gratitude towards DENR-10 for supporting the SEC’s endeavor in monitoring non-stock corporations as the sector that needs extra assistance in complying with their annual reports with the Commission.

"This partnership will surely be beneficial to the CBFM-POs under the jurisdiction of DENR-10. We look forward to assisting them so that their corporation or association will not be suspended or, worse, revoked, where, in such a case, it will be hard for them to avail the services and grants of the DENR," he said.

The parties are anticipating several future activities, primarily aimed at mobilizing the organizations and associations monitored by DENR-10. (SEC CDOEO/ PIA-10)

The central bank conducted stakeholder consultations and disseminated information via social media, webpages, press releases, roadshows, training sessions, and audiovisual presentations to generate public awareness and appreciation of the polymer banknote launched in April 2022.

In 2022, the bill was

chosen Banknote of the Year by the International Bank Note Society.

The polymer banknote was likewise a finalist for IACA's 2023 Best New Banknote or Banknote Series award, which was given to Bank Indonesia’s 2022 Rupiah Banknote Series. (PNA)

ern Visayas are stunted, the National Nutrition Council earlier said, citing the 2022 monitoring reports from local government units.

On June 22, 2022, the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved a USD178.1 million loan to support countries efforts to combat malnutrition in the country. (PNA)

ernment has implemented prevention and treatment programs, increased public awareness, and strengthened healthcare systems. However, the country continues to face challenges in terms of stigma, access to healthcare in remote areas, and reaching vulnerable populations. Seventh is to ensure environmental sustainability. Environmental sustainability has gained increasing attention in the Philippines. Efforts have been made to address deforestation, promote renewable energy, and improve waste management practices. The country has also implemented policies and initiatives to mitigate the impacts of climate change. However, illegal logging, improper waste disposal, and weak enforcement of environmental regulations remain significant challenges. Lasty is to develop global partnerships for development. The Philippines recognizes the importance of global partnerships for sustainable development. The country actively participates in regional and international collaborations, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the UN. Such partnerships help in resource mobilization, knowledge sharing, and capacity building for achieving the MDGs.
