Vicarious celebration of Fil-Am victories

ROCKINGHAM, North Carolina—It would probably be more than a week by the time this column gets printed or comes out online whichever comes first but I’m sure a lot of Filipinos will still be basking in the afterglow of victory by Filipino-American R’Bonney Gabriel as the 2022 Miss Universe—she being considered a 2022 winner even if the pageant was held this year 2023 since there was no pageant due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

That being said, not a few Pinoys will also bat a cynical eyelash at those Pinoys who cheered on Miss Gabriel’s victory even if she did technically represent the US in the (arguably) longest running and most well known beauty pageant in the world. Among those who voiced their cynicism in social media is Nef Luczon, a Cagayan de Oro Citybased bureau chief of the Philippine News Agency (PNA) and local filmmaker/ professor who described the Filipinos fawning over Miss Gabriel’s Miss Universe win and her Fil-Am roots as ‘Penoize’, probably a play on ‘Pinoys’ and ‘noize (noise). While I may agree with his points—he did guest in

my program ‘Susan Live’a few episodes back discussing about the planned ban on Korean drama—there is very little he or anyone else can do about the tendency of many Pinoys to look for anything remotely Pinoy in any celebrity who made it big abroad. Whether it be an actor, athlete, doctor and so on, the discovery of a celebrity’s Filipino roots fills any average Pinoy with a sense of pride and vicarious satisfaction from that Fil-Am’s achievements.

For starters we can all thank our media outlets for doing the research and looking for any signs of a celebrity’s roots to see if he or she has Filipino blood. And to be fair, these stories make for good viewing and reading. I mean, while we celebrate the boxing victories of now former senator Manny Pacquiao or the showbiz career of a Lea Salonga, it somehow gives a sense of awe and glee to discover that Mr. or Miss Celebrity is part-Filipino regardless of how small of a percentage the genes and familial roots were.

Even if that celebrity is all-American or European, Asian or what not, the discovery that Mister or

PBBM state visit: Walking the talk

LAST Jan. 7, 2022, the Asian Century Philippine Strategic Studies Institute Inc. (ACPSSII) co-sponsored with the Kamuning Bakery Café and the Manila Times, a webinar on the “PBBM sate visit to China: Impact on the Philippines’ economy and future”

Speaking in the webinar were: Federation of FilipinoChinese Chambers of Commerce and Industries Inc. (FFCCCII) president Henry Lim Bonliong representing up to 10,000 full range of giant to small FilipinoChinese businesses in the country.

Civic and philanthropic leader Sixto “Noy” Benedicto, president of the Association for Philippine-China Understanding (APCU) -- established in 1974 -- and a silent but key and instrumental factor in President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos’s diplomatic initiative with China formalizing diplomatic relations in 1975;

Dr. Aaron “Jed” Rabena, research fellow of the Asia Pathways to Progress Foundation Inc. (APPFI) and Prof. Anna Malindog-Uy, external vice-president of the ACPSSII. It was moderated by Wilson Lee Flores, director of the APCU and empresario of the premier media forum lace Kamuning

Last but not least of all yours truly Herman Tiu Laurel as panel reactor to the presentations and devil’s advocate to the discussion, presenting the more critical and challenging aspects of the issue at hand -- what PBBM has to do now returning from the smashing success of a state visit to China which rolled out the full honors for the Philippines’ chief representative to the world trumpets blaring, 21-gun salute roaring, honor guards galore.

I wrote down my reactions entitled “Impact of the PBBM State Visit to China”:

“After observing the spectacular welcome President Xi Jinping staged for President Bongbong Marcos as its first state visitor in 2023 with the clear purpose of showing the Filipino people and the world the utmost priority China is giving the Philippines among its relations in the global community;

And after witnessing the unmistakable intention of President Bongbong Marcos of making China as his administration’s first foreign, official state visit outside of ASEAN, that is to put relations with the People’s Re -

Miss Celebrity has Filipino friends or co-workers— yes, a nanny or yaya will also qualify--=can still be a source of pride and bragging rights for our celebrity obsessed Pinoys. Ever notice how, during press junkets of tentpole film releases, the Filipino reporter, usually TV, would squeeze in a question like, ‘have you ever been to the Philippines?’ or some such line?

I don’t blame these reporters for doing so because they’re trying to connect the celebrity with their intended audience. At any rate to their credit the foreign celebrities in question are game enough and even express genuine interest in the Philippines and as a Filipino transplated in the US for sometime now, I still appreciate the value of interconnecting with different cultures. Bisan asa ta mabutang sa kalibutan, mogawas gud ang atong pagka-Pinoy.

Speaking of which, it’s also instructive to know

public of China, the primus inter pares among nations of Asia, as his top foreign relations focus;

President Bongbong Marcos has now shown his firm resolution to continue the constitutional ‘independent foreign policy’ principle and practice reincarnated by his predecessor President Rodrigo R. Duterte, pursued by PBBM’s father President Ferdinand E. Marcos and prescribed by the First Philippine Republic’s first foreign minister Apolinario Mabini.

PBBM’s historic first state visit outside of ASEAN to China also gave due respect not only to ASEAN centrality but also carrying forward the Asian Moment that was 2022 that culminated in three global summits held in ASEAN and Asia in November, which PBBM now resumes in 2023 with the visit to China.

This visit was another historic step in the march of the Philippines towards the Asian Century and into the vision of a world of ‘Forever Peace and Prosperity’

Veron, who noted that the BARMM was at a crucial stage in its legislative process concerning the codes, said the consultations should listen to more voices from the marginalized and vulnerable groups in the region.

The diplomat came over for the turnover of two minibuses and other equipment to BARMM as part of the Support to Bangsamoro Transition (Subatra) program, a 5-year programme funded by the EU and cofinanced by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, through an agreement with the Philippine government.

“We hope that more people will be reached especially

Muslim Gen Z Travelers Seeking Culture, Sustainability in Travel: Mastercard-CrescentRating Report

Coming of age during a time of global turbulence and greater climate awareness, Muslim Gen Z travelers are prioritizing opportunities that reflect these experiences and supporting local businesses. When it comes to payment methods overseas, 73 percent of them are more inclined to use a debit or credit card while 57 percent prefer to use cash.

MANILA , Philippines –January 18, 2023 – Two thirds of Muslim Gen Z travelers are looking for cultural immersion in their chosen destinations, while nature excursions are prioritized just as highly as more conventional “leisure seeking” pursuits, such as shopping and events. They are also developing financial independency with 32 percent paying for trips from their own pockets as opposed to 16 percent who rely solely on their parents. The findings come from the inaugural MastercardCrescentRating Muslim Gen Z: The Next Generation of Travelers report.

According to the report, the Muslim Gen Z population is actively looking to travel, with 69 percent planning to take two or more trips in the next 12 months, and 32 percent wanting to stay at their destinations between one and two weeks.

More importantly, almost half of the respondents (45 percent) identify themselves as environmental enthusiasts. Nearly a third are willing to minimize flying, while 11 percent will pay for carbon offsets and 14 percent will take holidays closer to home to avoid long haul flights. In fact, when it comes to travel spend, they are known as intentional spenders where 77 percent of Muslim Gen Z are willing to spend more on sustainable practices such as reducing air travel, participating in voluntourism (or volunteer tourism),

“Being the first generation born in the digital age, Gen Z are often considered the true digital natives with exposure to the internet, social networks, and mobile devices from a very early age. Gen Z are actively redefining what it means to travel. This report presents clear, actionable findings for tourism operators around the world that can help them to capture this incredibly important demographic,” said Fazal Bahardeen, Founder & CEO, CrescentRating and HalalTrip.

Muslim Gen Z women also emerged in the study as important decision makers, with over 70 percent heavily involved in planning for family travel. Almost 70 percent prefer cultural immersion activities such as experiencing local traditions, heritage, and cuisine. In addition, 63 percent seek opportunities to learn something new in their travels. This segment is also drivers for change, with 76 percent indicating social causes to be important in their travel plans.

Faith-based services are also important for Muslim travelers, with Muslim Gen Z identifying Halal food services, prayer facilities, and water-friendly washrooms as “need to have”

“When our attention was called on that ay talagang nagsisigaw ako dun sa pilahan kasi (I was shouting at the Kadiwa store because) it’s not fair… All the government offices surrounding the circle, especially the Department of Agriculture employees,” Estoperez said.

“Sa mga employees naman na during office hours, please refrain dun sa pagpila (To the employees buying during office hours, please refrain from queuing). We’ll have time for that, but not just during office hours,” he added.

Kadiwa sites in Metro Manila have become popular among consumers due to the more affordable prices of agricultural commodities they offer, including rice, onion, sugar, meat and other spices and vegetables.

Sugar in Kadiwa

The Sugar Regulatory Administration, meanwhile, said it will recommend the selling of smuggled sugar in Kadiwa sites.

In a statement, the SRA said about this would include the 4,000 metric tons of refined sugar that came in from Thailand on board MV Sunward and seized in Batangas.

“Sugar Regulatory Administrator David Alba will recommend to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to allow the 80,000 bags of sugar seized at the Batangas port last week to be sold to the public through the Kadiwa Rolling Stores,” the SRA said.

Alba noted that the move will help consumers have access to “refined sugar at a lower cost.”

As of now, the prevailing market price of refined sugar in Metro Manila ranges

The WMO said the improvement is a result of positive actions taken under the Montreal Protocol, a treaty adopted in 1987 to regulate the production and consumption of ODS.

In a news release on Tuesday, Legarda said countries must have the will to deliver on their commitments, especially in undertaking significant and deep cuts on fossil fuel emissions and mobilizing finance, technologies, and capacity development support to countries and communities in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

The Paris Agreement, often referred to as the Paris Accords or the Paris Climate Accords, is the international treaty that deals with climate change.

“The depleting ozone layer was such a huge environmental concern back then, but we were able to diagnose the problem and unite to address it. The recovery of our ozone layer is a sign that we are capable of healing our climate and gives us more reason to hope for a better planet and future for all,” Legarda said.

She noted that the annual mobilization of USD100 billion of climate finance for developing countries, starting in 2020, remains unmet.

Legarda said there is a need for access to climate finance from public and private sources and philanthropies, and for multi -

WHO Emergency Committee will meet on Jan. 27 to discuss whether Covid-19 still represents a global health emergency.

Nationally, the state of calamity due to Covid-19 declaration seems to have a small probability to be extended as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. previously expressed hesitancy on the matter.

Earlier, the DOH recommended another extension as several of the Covid-19 response measures rely on the declaration of the state of calamity and public health emergency, including the vaccination drive.

“If and when the public emergency will be lifted, we know that the virus is here to stay,” Vergeire said.

“The Philippines will continue to be cautious and vigilant, and we will still be imposing these same restrictions that we have right now which are not so much strict, but we have that safeguard that anytime cases will increase, we have our safeguards that we can rely on and we can impose to better protect Filipinos,” she added.

Currently, Covid-19 infections and hospital admissions of severe and critical cases in the country are beginning to plateau after a recent slight increase.

On Monday, the DOH reported a 6-percent decrease in its daily average of new cases -- from last week’s 447 to 419 in the recent week.

To date, the country has logged over 4 million Covid-19 cases and more

Covid-19 admissions remain manageable with only 17.2 percent or 402 out of the 2,340 intensive care unit (ICU) beds and 20 percent or 3,917 of 19,607 non-ICU beds utilized as of Jan. 15. ( PNA )

Personalized education

IN a typical classroom, you’re likely to find wide variations in student engagement: a few fast finishers who quickly master the material, several who are struggling to keep up and a handful in the Goldilocks zone who are exactly where they need to be.

Some are bored, some are frustrated and some may be sailing along but aren’t fully invested in the experience.

Personalized learning can help you reach them all. It’s all about delivering a better journey for each student.

Teachers can adapt their instructional style and materials to ensure that all students learn in the way that works

best for them.

While many people equate personalized learning with individualized learning, the latter implies that teachers can develop, deliver and manage 30 unique programs – one for every single student in the classroom. While this may be an ideal vision, it’s hardly sustainable.

But the more that we can customize learning to meet the individual rather than forcing students through a one size fits all curriculum, the more effective learning will be. Students are given voice and choice or the ability to shape their own learning pathways, pursuing topics and subjects that excite them.

audience attention had also been afforded to the Philippine bet to the Miss Universe, Celeste Cortesi. She’s probably to my recollection one of the more recent Philippine beauty pageant representatives with mixed blood, the other being Catriona Gray. But I’m not going to stray too far and talk about her or the other pageant candidates with foreign parentage.

Suffice it to say that whatever one’s sentiments on Miss Gabriel’s victory in the Miss Universe pageant is and the resulting ‘Penoizing’ afterward, it’s just that, a vicarious celebration of one’s achievement even if that celebrity doesn’t know squat about Pinoy fans. At the time when we are still grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, the war between Russia and Ukraine and the escalating prices of food stuff, a Miss Universe victory by a foreigner with mixed Pinoy blood is a balm on the senses.

And so Filipino-Americans like myself cheer Miss Gabriel on while wishing that more full-blooded Pinoys make their mark in the global stage. As a former official and active member of the Filipino-American Community of the Carolinas Inc. (FACC) here, I also do my part In promoting and developing a sense of pride and kinship between the Fil-Am community here and their families back home. This effort is also critical for current and future generations of Fil-Ams who need to embrace both their ties to the Philippines and their US roots.

and away from 500 years of ‘forever wars’ that the West brought to Asia and the world. Now, in the spirit of the ‘strongest partnership’ the Philippines can truly build its new society of prosperity in a region of harmony and stability.

The remaining question as President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. returns to the Philippines is, ‘What actions will President Bongbong Marcos, Jr. take to fulfill the rich symbolisms of his state visit to China.’ There are bold moves to make to materialize the historic symbolisms such as:

-- Ending the dalliances with the Western imperialist powers,

-- Ending the sabotage of the Philippines’ economic, political and geopolitical blossoming by the West’s Fifth Column in the Philippine polity,

-- The full and uninterrupted commitment to the ‘comprehensive strategic cooperation’ with the engine of development of the world,

-- Solidarity with the ASEAN majority to exclude outside powers from the South China Sea

All these will begin with the fast-tracking of the Philippine-China 60/40 oil-gas joint venture which is only

being held back by the monumental obstructionism of a Western-led transnational oil consortium, as well as the disciplining of the foreign affairs and security bureaucracies from diverging from official government foreign policies.

Thank you.”

President BBM came home to a host of problems, very urgent problems. I won’t be surprised if the euphoria and promise of the successful state visit would quickly wear off and swiftly get lost in the noises of the domestic situation facing the NAIA systems crash and the Black Nazarene PNP mobilization.

Undeterred focus on the economic cooperation with China will be the unerring guiding light through all these.

In the surveys of the entire 2022 to December, the highest concerns of Filipinos has always been high prices or inflation, jobs and livelihood, corruption, poverty, education and everything concerning the material wellbeing of the Filipino family. Published on Dec. 16, 2022 the survey found: Majority of Filipinos believe that the Philippine economy is the most important issue that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. should focus on PUBLiCUS Asia Inc. covered a total of 1,500 female and male Filipino respondents showed that at least 25 percent of Filipinos are most concerned.

This was followed by prices of goods and inflation which had a rating of 16 percent, climbing from 11 percent in the third quarter of 2022.

Meanwhile, the Strabase ADR Institute commissioned Pulse Asia to do a survey that found out that in the surveys of the entire 2022 to December, the highest concerns of Filipinos has always been high prices or inflation, jobs and livelihood, corruption, poverty, education, and everything concerning the material wellbeing of the Filipino family. Published on Dec. 16, 2022 the survey found: Those security issues out of 16 “most urgent national concerns” ranked No. 15 with 3 percent (repeat, 3 percent only) of 1,200 survey respondents saying it is of immediate concern, but Stratbase media reports presents only the security angle to highlight so-called support for the security arrangements with the US and its allies.

For the Filipino respondents, President Ferdinand

R. Marcos Jr. should also focus on the following issues: corruption (11 percent), jobs (11 percent), poverty (10 percent), education (6 percent), wages (5 percent), peace and order or crime (4 percent), illegal drugs (3 percent), and environment (2 percent). Nowhere in the report of the survey did it show that Filipinos are worried about China and the so-called West Philippine Sea.

Who was it who said that running the Philippines is much, much more difficult than running the United States of America, or today running the vast country of China.

In his special report, City Councilor Cabanlas, chair of landed state and subdivision, moved for the relocation of City Hall to a bigger and convenient area - and where there is “one stop shop” for all people transacting at the City Hall, especially during the business licensing and renewal of businesses.

Cabanlas noted that other transactions are being made at the City Engineering Office in Barangay Kauswagan and other areas as other offices of some departments involved in the licensing and renewal of business permits are not found inside the City Hall.

City Councilor Cabanlas said transferring from one location to the other is very inconvenient for people renewing their business licenses every year.

NO ENOUGH PARKING Cabanlas also reiterated that the parking spaces at the City Hall are already very small for a growing number of clients every year who are transacting to apply for new business permits, and or apply for renewal.

“There is really a need now to transfer City Hall to a more convenient location to give easy access to our growing clients every year,” Cabanlas said.

To give way to the proposed relocation of the City Hall, Vice Mayor Jocelyn Rodriguez also recommended the Committee on Ways and Means chaired by City Councilor George Goking; Planning, research and innovation and people’s organization headed by City Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya; Committee on Engineering under City Councilor John Michael Seno; and Committee on Subdivision and Landed Estate chaired by Cabanlas -

to conduct a thorough study and later give their respective recommendations.

All three Oaminals serving public office in Misamis Occidental were rated in the top 10 among the “Top Performers” in local governance by the RPMD.

Misamis Occidental Governor Henry Oaminal Sr. placed sixth among the top performing governors with an 85-percent rating; and Ozamiz City Mayor Henry Oaminal Jr. was ranked ninth among city mayors with 80 percent.

“My congratulations as well to our fellow public servants—let us all continue to be competitive collaborators in nation building,” Governor Oaminal said in a separate statement.

Mayor Indy also expressed his gratitude about the results and emphasized the need to work even harder for the city.

“A positive rating in the first few months of my first term is more than welcome, and I am thankful for being among those recognized. But this should not distract from the fact that there is a lot more work to be done to make our goals for Ozamiz a reality. And I assure Ozamiznons that I will work even harder for this,” Mayor Indy said.

RPMD’s conclusion was supported by their independent and non-commissioned “Boses ng Bayan” national performance evaluation survey.

According to Dr. Paul Martinez, RPMD’s focal person, the top-rated officials should be commended for their “constituent service.”

Among the 65.75 million registered voters between the ages of 18 and 70 years old, 10,000 respondents were selected. The sample employs a plus-or-minus 1 percent margin of error and a 95 percent degree of confidence.

Respondents were chosen randomly and the number of them was distributed proportionally based on the number of registered voters per area.

Song composer Tommy Galo writes fast than Moira

HE IS ONE OF THE FINEST songwriters of the country. Yet, this very talented man is still untapped by many record producers in the Philippines and abroad.

But Tommy Galo, a resident of the fastest booming City of Cagayan de Oro, is now starting to carve a name in the music industry with his total compositions now reaching 201 songs since he started writing three years ago.

“I have written and composed songs in the last three years, and they are now 201 songs in total,” Galo told MDNN in an exclusive interview.

Galo has slowly created a fan base in his social media accounts in Facebook and Youtube. His original compositions are also posted in iTunes.

Since Galo’s officially recorded songs are played in Youtube and Facebook, his fans are now following whenever he releases a new composition.

In his hometown in Cagayan de Oro, Mr Galo is now invited to judge in some singing contests sponsored by radio and television stations.

“Dako ang akong kalipay nga hinayhinay na nga naila ang atong pagka compositor dinhi sa Cagayan de Oro ug naimbitahan na kita sa mga singing competitions niadtong nilabay nga tuig,” he said.

Galo’s top 5 songs have now gathered over a hundred thousand views.

The composer also said he is now second to Moira dela Torre in terms of the number of compositions.

Based on research made by MDNN Entertainment, Moira has over 400 total number of songs since she started songwriting at a younger age, or in a span of 10 years while Galo has 201 songs in only 3 years.

Most of Galo’s songs were recorded by local singers from Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro and they can be heard in his Youtube channel and on his Facebook page.

Galo is a CPA or Certified Public Accountant and he graduated with a masteral degree at Xavier University, Ateneo de Cagayan.

He told MDNN that he started writing songs

in 2019 and he got the inspiration from his own experience and from what he learned from other people and friends.

Currently, Galo works at the BIR office based in Malaybalay City, as Chief of the Assessment Department.

“I am now the Chief of Assessment of BIR office, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. I started to write songs in September 2019 and as of date, I have already composed 201 original songs. Some of these songs were sung and recorded by my chosen local singers mostly from CDO and Bukidnon,” he narrated.
