Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy announced the other day, that the City College for poor but deserving students in the city, will be opened in

September, this year.

The mayor revealed to the media that the said college will be constructed in the 46-hectare land located in barangay Dansolihon, which is a donated property to the City Government.

“Makasiguro ko labing dugay sunod tuig pero paningkamutan nako sa second semester karong tuiga. Silbi karong school year second semester, makasugod ta sa city college, bisa’g walay building dinhi,” Mayor

Klarex Uy said.

“Nagpasalamat ko kay nagsaad pud ang DepEd nga aduna sila’y building nga pahulaman, aron nga makasugod ta sa atong city college,” he added.

Mayor Uy said he became

emotional as he heard that the donation was from a group of “lumads” in the said barangay.

Dabawenyos to pay 20% more for water

DAVAO CITY – The second tranche of the water rate adjustment of 20% will be implemented within the year, according to the Davao City Water District (DCWD).

DCWD spokesperson JC Duhaylungsod said during Kapehan sa Davao on Monday that the documents and other requirements submitted by the water utility for the rate increase are currently being reviewed by the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA).

Duhaylungsod said that the DCWD could not give a specific month as to when the additional price hike would take effect as it would go through the evaluation of the regulatory agency.

“We would prefer to

have it in the first semester because we have numerous projects that are in the pipeline that we would want to implement this year, and we need additional 20% to fund all of these projects so that implementation will be on schedule,” she said.

Duhaylungsod added that the LWUA would look into the affordability and practicability of the rate increase before it would approve the additional rate adjustment.

LWUA approved in July 2022 the proposal of the DCWD to increase water rate by 60% to raise funds to support the agency’s 10year development program.

To cushion the adverse impact of the water rate hike on local consumers, the water rate adjustment

Marcos wants to fast-track upgrade of aviation safety system

the 2015 Paris Agreement on the effects of climate change.

The country is also a beneficiary under the global Green Climate Fund (GCF), created to serve the Paris Agreement and Kyoto Protocol that aims to provide funding for climate mitigation and adaptation of developing countries.

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered the fast-tracking of the modernization of the country’s aviation safety system to avoid glitches similar to the Jan. 1 incident at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

At a media briefing in Malacañang on Tuesday, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista said the management agreement with Sumitomo-Thales -- the maintenance provider of the communications, navigation, and surveillance/air traffic management (CNS/ ATM) system of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) -- will also be expedited.

Teaching Strategies for New Year

It is resolution season!

In January we reflect on past joys and concerns from the previous year, and take the opportunity to make a resolution that will improve our lives in the New Year. Of course, we all know that resolutions are hard to keep and can often be unrealistic. Teachers are always looking for ways to improve in the classroom; to assist with any of your New Year’s resolutions that relate to instruction.

The techniques, steps, or other processes a teacher employs when imparting knowledge in a classroom are referred to as effective teaching strategies. In order

to satisfy standards and meet the educational requirements of their pupils, teachers use several tactics to guide their instruction. Teachers must be well-versed in a variety of teaching techniques and have access to a wide range of these techniques. This aids teachers in involving their students and maintaining classroom participation in the learning process.

The use of teaching tactics in the new year is crucial for classroom instruction. Teachers would be aimlessly projecting knowledge that doesn’t connect with students or engage them if they didn’t apply a plan each year. Strategies foster

engagement, connection, and enthusiasm in the delivery of the content. Some students can even use these techniques independently when they learn new content once they become familiar with the numerous ways teachers employ.

Every student that enters your classroom is different. They arrive with diverse backgrounds in experiences, opinions, and interests. Therefore, it should not be surprising that pupils learn new content in a variety of ways. Differentiation is crucial because of this. Every learner can benefit from personal learning tactics thanks to differentiation. Students are given the chance to study material in the way their brains learn it most effectively.

requirements necessary for the upgrade or improvement of the CNS/ATM system, which includes hardware and software maintenance, hardware replacement, ultimate fallback system for

software redundancy and the need for an independent CNS/ATM in a separate location,” Bautista said.

He said the government has been working with Sumitomo-Thales since

September last year to help CAAP with the maintenance of the CNS/ATM system. However, he said a maintenance agreement was not reached due to financial

Marcos says he wants to keep Tulfo due to his ‘good instincts’

MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday said he still wants to keep former Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Erwin Tulfo in his administration, noting that he still wanted to take advantage of his “good instincts.”

In an interview with select reporters in Malacañang Palace, Marcos shot down speculations that Tulfo would be named one of his advisers.

2.5K Zambales rice farmers get gov’t cash aid

Pampanga – The Department of Agriculture (DA) continues to distribute cash assistance to eligible rice farmers under the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund - Rice Farmers Financial Assistance (RCEFRFFA).

DA Regional Executive Director Crispulo Bautista said on Tuesday that some 2,504 rice farmers from the towns of San Narciso and San Marcelino in Zambales, have started claiming financial assistance this month as compensation for their income loss due to a drop in the selling price of palay and increasing cost of fertilizer and other farm inputs.

Under the special provisions of the RCEF, the RFFA program provides rice farmers who are registered under the Registry Systems for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA), and tilling two hectares and below of land, unconditional cash assistance of PHP5,000.

The program sources its funds from the rice tariffs collected annually in excess of the PHP10 billion allocated for RCEF.

In Zambales alone, a total of 16,046 rice farmers are about to receive RCEFRFFA cash aid for the years 2022-2023.

On the other hand, a total of 202,712 rice farmers in the entire Central Luzon will receive the same assistance.

Charlie Febelina, one of the farmer-beneficiaries in San Narciso, thanked the government for the help extended to them.

“Maraming-maraming salamat po sa ibinibigay na tulong at natatanggap naming biyaya sa DA. Magagamit ko po ito pandagdag pambili ng abono sa aking tanim na palay (Thank you so much for the assistance and the blessing that we received from the DA. I can use it to purchase fertilizer for my newly planted palay),” Febelina said in a statement.

Farmer Abegail Falsario, also from San Narciso, said she will use the PHP5,000 cash assistance to buy insecticides.

“Okay na okay ang program. Maganda at nakakatulong talaga (The program is okay. It is good and it can help indeed),” Falsario said. ( PNA )

character and values of the Filipinos that give credence to our identity as a nation renowned for its bravery, tenacity, and fortitude,” he said.

On behalf of Mayor Geraldine Rosal, Vice Mayor Robert Cristobal delivered a message where he asked

the young generation, particularly the students, to embody the same bravery of the Filipino soldiers by fighting against corruption, illegal drugs and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The Battle of Legazpi was the fight for freedom of every Filipino from the

hands of foreign invaders. Today, we are no longer at war but still, there is a lot of concerns we should focus on to better the lives of our people,” Cristobal said. War veterans, teachers and students, officers and personnel of the Philippine

Hints and Traces

Let’s follow the example of St. Paul

JANUARY 25 is the Feast of that dramatic conversion of St. Paul. It’s a feast that reminds us that Christ can choose anybody to work with him as an apostle, because in fact, everybody is meant to be one, if he truly is consistent with his human and Christian dignity.

A man, given the way he is, and especially when he takes his Christianity seriously, is and should always be an apostle. He should always be concerned with everybody else, and should help in giving the most important thing in our life --our own salvation, our own perfection as a person and as a child of God.

On this feast, the gospel reading is about Christ commissioning his apostles to “go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mk 16,15) Somehow, it gives us the idea that the Gospel of Christ that brings Christ to the people is meant to unite all of us in him.

And that’s because we are meant to form one family with God through Christ in the Holy Spirit. In fact, we are meant to become living members of the Mystical Body of Christ, which is the Church.

That is why, this feast also marks the culmination of the Christian Unity Octave, that effort to bring all of us who profess belief in Christ together, in spite of our unavoidable differences.

Some of these differences are legitimate and tolerable and can generate a lot of good for all of us. In this sense, the more differences we have, the better for us. Others may have to be resolved in some process of dialogue. And the Church’s current thrust on synodality can be helpful in this regard.

What this feast also reminds us of is for us to imitate as much as possible the example of St. Paul who readily converted even while in the middle of a campaign against the early Christians. Like St. Paul, we should be ready to make some drastic changes in life if only to follow what Christ is indicating to us in some specific ways.

Remember those parables about the hidden treasure (cfr. Mt 13, 44) and the pearl of great price (cfr. Mt 13,45-46). Both parables can mean that we should be ready to leave behind certain things if only to pursue the specific vocation God is giving us.

I have known a lot of good and holy people who have left behind their profession, business, and their former way of life to become priests or some consecrated persons, or just ordinary lay people who assume a lifetime commitment to seek sanctity and do apostolate in the middle of the world.

We ought to know that everyone has a vocation from God. But as to what specific vocation we are given, we should try our best to discern through prayers so we can hear what God is telling or showing us. We should try our best that our sense of vocation remains always sharp, able to give constant impulses to our daily activities.

We have to be wary of just pursuing and developing our life simply according to our human goals with hardly any consideration of what God really wants us to be and to do, thereby trapping us in our own world, and preventing us to enter into the spiritual and supernatural world God meant for us, since God wants it that way.

“DENY THYSLEF!” That “self” in the biblical pronouncement by Jesus Christ Himself to be outrightly “denied” is NEVER our true self as that “little me” is a fictitious one. Yet, such narrative of one’s self, rooted in one’s ego, is the one that is being collectively followed without let-up that is intensely reigning in the mindset of humanity, now suffering from collective insanity. That egoic self has transformed the homo sapiens into the most flawed of all of God’s creation. It has been the opinion of great contemporaneous spiritual leaders that the species called the Homo Sapiens (human being) is the most flawed of all of God’s creation having killed its own kind of about 200 million human beings in one century alone (19th hundred) out of two world wars, the cleansing of Hitler and Pol Pot, Stalinism, Maoism and the Vietnam War, among others. Humanity continues to suffer from collective insanity advancing unbridled materialism and consumerism amidst spiritual denigration where the instant pursuit of wealth, fame and power is the pri -

ority based on a flawed dictum called “survival of the fittest.” Worse, the homo sapiens has put the earth in a cataclysmic state as the present development paradigm is sacrificing mother Earth to the altar of greed and power.

That egoic self that is giving so much veneration to the profit motive, to the instant pursuit of wealth, fame and power has already captured the mindset of all governments, all institutions, all religions and all universities. That “little me” is so self-centered, focusing on brandishing narratives on how great the egoic leaders are, how great are their beliefs and ideologies and are willing to kill those whose beliefs are different from theirs. Don’t you know that historically, wars came about because of opposing religious belief, i.e.,” my religion is right and yours is false, so I have to kill you.”

That fictitious self is even killing mother earth. Even former US President Donald Trump was so egoic that he categorically is a climate change denier himself. Why is this so? Well, the US 19 fossil fuel corporations are profiting

some 16 trillion dollars annually or 10 million dollars every minute out of the non-stop usage of coal and fossil fuels. Noam Chomsky, described by New York Times as “the most important intellectual alive, described that the plight of human civilization as “racing towards the precipice.” The doomsday clock of Mother Earth was set to at two and a half minutes before midnight. The cause: the disbelief in the scientific consensus over climate change by all governments, the mainstream media and religious groups.” Indeed, the conscious refusal of the dominant players – governments, corporations and the media – to act with purpose helps to answer the questions, “where is the human outcry for earth’s

With available funds for development this year and commitment from the national government to pour in more budget in the future,

the facility will elevate its status from a major domestic airport to an international airport by 2025, said CAAP Eastern Visayas Area Manager Danilo Abarreta in an interview on Tuesday.

The construction of new passenger terminal building Phase 1 with a budget of PHP731.6 million is now 47.41 percent complete. The second phase of the project will start early this year with a budget of PHP700 million, according to CAAP.

“The total cost to develop the terminal building is PHP1.96 billion. It will have a total area of 36,298.98 square meters and can accommodate 1,670 passengers. The building design is inspired by San Juanico Bridge and city’s coastal mountain landscape merged with Taklub fishcage,” Abarreta said.

CEBU CITY – A 21-year-old e-bike driver yielded more than a kilo of shabu worth PHP7.1 million when arrested Monday night in an anti-drug sting operation here, a police official said on Tuesday.

Major Francis Renz Talosig, chief of the Cebu City police Station 6, identified the suspect as Vincen Rodriguez, a resident of Belgium

Talosig said Rodriguez was arrested after he transacted with an operative of the drug enforcement team of Station 6, in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, during the buy-bust operation in

Sitio Mahayahay II of the neighboring barangay of Pasil.

The arresting officer, Staff Sergeant Ian Jude Montellano, recovered from Rodriguez a bundle of marked money purported to be worth PHP15,000.

Also seized from the suspect were more than 20 pieces of transparent plastic packs that has white

PH on its way towards inflation target path: Medalla

MANILA – Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Felipe Medalla on Monday told foreign investors the Philippines’ inflation rate is on its way back within target in the second half of 2023.

During the Philippine economic briefing held in Frankfurt, Germany that was streamed live through the Facebook page of various government agencies, Medalla told business leaders that the inflation rate in the country is now driven by supply-side factors from an initial impact of globalrelated issues.

He said the government has been doing its best to address the issue, and among the solutions include speeding up the importation of several agricultural products such as rice, sugar and meat.

Medalla said there are already signs that inflation is normalizing, with month-on-month level already decelerating.

“Unless there is a large shock again that’s associated with the weather, we do

Lanao Norte town’s resumption of festival brings joy to street vendors

LINAMON, Lanao del Norte – As the world hunkered down to avoid being infected by COVID-19, jeopardizing livelihood of billions of people, the resumption of the “Hudyaka sa Lubi” (coconut festival) in this town, complete with a street dancing competition on Monday, gave hope to small businessmen, like the street vendors.

44K kilos of smuggled onions, 33 drums fuel seized in Zambo City

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Authorities have seized some 44,000 kilos of smuggled red onions and 300 drums of fuel sneaked into this southern port city, a top military official said Tuesday.

Rear Adm. Donn Anthony Miraflor, Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) commander, said the onions and fuel were seized Monday afternoon at a private-owned dry dock in Barangay Cawit.

Miraflor said 3,000 bags

of smuggled onions were seized in a van while another 8,000 bags were found aboard a wooden-hulled ferry, MJ Marisa, moored at the dry dock.

“Each bag weighs four kilos, which sums up to approximately 44,000 kilos of smuggled onions,” Miraflor said in a statement.

The estimated worth of the seized onions was placed at PHP22 million, based on the prevailing market price of PHP500 per kilo.

The municipality, led by Mayor Randy J. Macapil, celebrated its 63rd founding anniversary, paying tribute to the coconut that is abundant in the area.

Jessel Mae Ladion, 21, sells ice cream only on weekends or during holidays, like Monday’s festival, because she is a criminology student. “I’m so happy with this festival because I sold a lot,” she told MindaNews in Cebuano.

“It’s not the same during the pandemic when it was challenging for us to live,” recalled Ladion of Barangay Magoong.

She narrated that vendors

could not sell to picnic goers in the several beach resorts in this coastal town because they are not allowed to enter as the resorts are already selling ice cream. “Thanks to this public event, which is a very big help to us,” Ladion said.

Pag-IBIG releases record-high P118B home loans in 2022: Over 100,000 members with new homes

Pag-IBIG Fund released a record-high P117.85 billion in home loans to finance the housing units of 105,212 members in 2022, its top officials announced January 18 (Wednesday).

For 2022, the amount of home loans released by the agency increased by 21% or P20.57 billion compared to the P97.28 billion released in 2021. With the amount, Pag-IBIG financed the acquisition and construction of 105,212 homes for its members, or an increase of 11% from the 94,533 homes financed in 2021.

“We are happy to re -

port that Pag-IBIG Fund has once again set a new record-high in home loan releases in 2022. This is very good news because as the amount of home loans we release increases, so does the number of Filipinos who now have homes of their own. Pag-IBIG Fund’s performance is a testament to our united and unwavering efforts to resolve the country’s housing backlog, in line with the objective of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. under the Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Program,” said Secretary Jose Rizalino L. Acuzar,

Blended Science & Mathematics

Integration Research indicates that using an interdisciplinary or integrated curriculum provides opportunities for more relevant, less fragmented, and more stimulating experiences for learners (Frykholm & Glasson, 2005; Koirala & Bowman, 2003;Jacobs, 1989).

Interdisciplinary teaching depends on the way students best acquire knowledge, the important role of not only reaching students during their developmental stage but influencing the teaching of subjects, and (c) the cooperative involvement of both students and teachers planning and learning together to modify the instruction of the end product-the students (Jacobs, 1989; Antonellis & James, 1973). More and more educators are coming to realize that one of the fundamental problems in schools today is the “separate subject” or “layer cake” approach to knowledge and skills.

Students cannot solve problems because they do not understand the context in which the problems are embedded (Frykholm & Glasson, 2005). Thus, readiing is very important in order for students to comprehend the given problem. The separate subject curriculum can be viewed as a jigsaw puzzle without any picture.

If done properly, integration of math and science could bring together overlapping concepts and principles in a meaningful way and enrich the learning context. Learning situated in such enriched (macro) contexts often lead to meaningful learning experiences. Carefully designed interactive videos are suitable for creating real-life contexts for problem-based learning in mathematics integrated with science (Kumar and Sherwood, 1997).

The integration of math and science encompasses a number of considerations, for example, teaching math entirely as a part of science, math as a language and tool for teaching science, or teaching science entirely as a part of math. This will help save time, especially in examination schedules, instead of spending two separate schedules for science and math, it will be done once only.

Presently, the Division of Misamis Oriental is integrating English, Science and Mathematics (ENSCIMA) thru HOLISTIC Assessment. These three subject areas are integrated and that they are interrelated. This will also lessen the contact time in the summative test for these subjects since students are given summative tests in one setting only instead of three separate time.

who heads the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the 11-member Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees.

Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer Marilene C. Acosta, meanwhile, noted that the 105,212 housing units financed in year 2022 is also a record-high, and

marks the first time that the agency has financed more than 100,000 housing units in a single year. She further stated that out of the total housing units financed by the agency last year, 18,657 or 18% were socialized housing units which are now owned by members from the minimum-wage and low-income sectors.

“We at Pag-IBIG Fund have always strived to provide our members – the Filipino workers, the means to have their own homes through affordable shelter financing. That is why we take great pride in achieving a record-high number of housing units financed in 2022 because it means that we have empowered even

more Filipinos in gaining their own homes. And, as we embark on yet another year, our members can continue to rely on Pag-IBIG Fund to provide them the most affordable home loan in the market, so that they too can achieve their dream of homeownership. That is the Lingkod Pag-IBIG pledge,” Acosta added.

BARMM solon opens new district office in MSU-Marawi

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur (PIA)--In pursuit of amplifying public service for the Bangsamoro people in Lanao del Sur, the Office of Member Parliament (MP) Lawyer Rasol Mitmug Jr. and the Mindanao State University (MSU) Main Campus launched the newly finished district office of the said MP, located beside the VIP Lounge of the Dimaporo Gymnasium in the MSU Main Campus here.

The office is equipped with facilities such as a conference room, a community library, and internet connectivity.

The Office of MP Rasol Mitmug Jr. Chief of Staff Amer Hussien Mitmug underscored that this new district office is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the MP to serve, assist, and support the constituency in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

“This will enable us to serve you better and more efficiently, and we will make the office a true hub of productivity, creativity, and success,” he said.

This was affirmed by Mitmug, who has been thankful to the MSU system for granting their request for a bigger office.

He explained that they chose to open an office within the university’s vicinity, recognizing that this is

the brain and heart of the city.

The solon has been known as an MP that persevered for the approval of proposals geared towards achieving a better Bangsamoro region.

Among the efforts he pushed previously were the passage of the 2023 budget, and the most recent was the approval of the Bangsamoro Development Plan for 2023–2028.

Additionally, his office has also extended aid for the health of the people in Lanao del Sur province as he pushed for a mobile clinic and allocated an annual budget for Amai Pakpak Medical Center and hospitals in Tamparan and Wao towns.

Mitmug revealed that this year they will be spending most of the time with the academy, which he sees as the source of reliable research and development.

This, he said, is according to his aim of passing evidence-

based laws.

He likewise revealed that his major plan is to maintain open governance and an open budget.

To pursue this, they will accordingly involve

The Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, operationalizes the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change by committing industrialized countries and economies in transition to limit and reduce greenhouse gases emissions.

While these grants benefit the Philippines, Legarda emphasized that a whole of nation approach is vital in addressing the dire global climate crisis.

“The loss and damage fund cannot bring back what we have lost in terms of lives, livelihoods, assets and opportunities, but just like post war reparations, these will help get us on an appropriate development track,” she said in a news release.

Legarda pointed out that climate finance is needed to build defenses, safeguard every Filipino from climate impacts, and shift the economy and society “towards low-carbon development and growth that would mitigate global warming and the intensity of climate change.”

In November last year, the Philippines joined the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People which aims to protect at least 30 percent of the world’s land and ocean through increased public and private financing.

“Hindi lang tayo dapat umasa sa isang grant gaya ng (We shouldn’t just rely on the) GCF. There should be a whole of government, whole of nation approach in addressing the climate crisis,” she said. “These few grants will not change the scenario.”

She said local governments must master early warning systems, evacuation and geohazard mapping, among others.

Legarda also urged her colleagues to recognize their critical roles in dealing with the global climate emergency.

“Let’s not waste this opportunity to do good, to do what is right and in all our endeavors, imagine a different future past the twin crisis of climate and biodiversity collapse,” Legarda said. ( PNA )

Army (PA), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), city government employees and Albay Chamber of Commerce and Industry members were also present in the commemoration ceremony.

Records at the Legazpi City Museum showed that on Jan. 23, 1900, the American forces consisting of three infantry companies with powerful rifles and canyons landed on a swampy area where the San Rafael Bridge is located. The swampy area was reclaimed during the early 20th century and is now the intersection of Rizal Street and Quezon Avenue.

The foreign troops came to conquer Legazpi but 800 revolutionary troops headed by Gen. Ignacio Pawa, Col. Antero Reyes, Capt. Alvaro Nepomuceno and Col. Policarpio Pergone would not easily hand them victory.

A bloody fight ensued between the American troops headed by Brig. Gen. W.A. Kobbe and the Filipino forces.

On that day, Col. Amando Arian, commander of the Sorsogon Filipino Garrison, wired Gen. Vito Belarmino, commanding general of the Filipino troops, and advised him that the American troops had already occupied Sorsogon.

Belarmino, however, was able to alert the garrison of Legazpi under the direct command of Pawa, who was chief of operations and his two assistants.

Accounts said the defense of Legazpi consisted of four main trenches facing the sea from the Yawa river to the north to Malabalo river to the south and some secondary entrenchments called trencher number 5 that closed the approaches of the San Rafael Bridge where the monument was constructed.

Historians said the “bloodiest hand-in-hand combat” between the American troops and Filipino forces took place at San Rafael Bridge and resulted in the death of 172 Filipinos, including Col. Reyes, and injuries to 12 others. Accounts said only 12 were injured on the side of the Americans.

The Filipinos used bolos during the battle, described as “brief and fierce” by historians. ( PNA)

Yolanda (Haiyan) has a 600-seating capacity.

Funding to fully complete the building is already available, to include the PHP1.42 billion release for 2023 earlier announced by the Department of Budget and Management.

Abarreta said the first phase in the PHP49.9 million construction of control tower structure is now complete. Up for implementation is the second phase which involves the PHP17.73 million installation of communication equipment.

The budget to acquire 131,539 square meters of lot is already available this year, according to the official. This will allow the expansion of the runway length from 2.1 kilometers to 2.5 kilometers. The runway extension project will be implemented in 2024.

“The medium-term goal is to meet the international runway length standards to accommodate international flights come 2025,” Abarreta told the Philippine News Agency.

The Department of Public Works and Highways recently completed the PHP46 million new access road leading to the airport.

Between 2023 to 2027, the Department of Transportation aims to complete and operationalize the new terminal building and control tower, lengthen the existing runway, provide runway end safety area of 200 meters on both ends, complete the construction of the new taxiway leading to the new apron, among others.

The DZR Airport is one of the country’s busiest with 36 daily flights between Manila and Cebu.

The airport in the regional capital was ranked as the country’s 7th busiest as of September 2022 with 975,127 million inbound and outbound passengers. The airport is busier than the other eight international airports in the country.

Named after Daniel Z, Romualdez, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, the airport serves as the main gateway from Manila and Cebu to Eastern Visayas. It is located in the city’s San Jose district. (PNA)

the central bank’s key policy rate by a total of 350 basis points last year after rate of price increases breached the government’s 2-4 percent inflation target band starting April last year.

Last December, inflation hit 8.1 percent, the highest since November 2008, which Medalla earlier said could likely be the peak.

“We expect that by the end of the third quarter or by the fourth quarter, we will already be below four percent,” he said.

Medalla said their inflation models show that inflation level may even be below 2 percent by early 2024.

In the past, he said the Philippines’ longest period of experiencing inflation of around 4 percent is 15 months, with three to four shocks coming within around four months.

He said base effects is seen to dissipate after around 16 months, with the current run the longest so far and unexpected due to several factors that started with global issues and then turned into domestic supply-side factors.

“We are well into a targetconsistent path of inflation …

of the plan for Erwin. We have other plans for him, not as a presidential adviser,” he said.

He bared that he is still trying to find out what position he would be giving Tulfo after he was bypassed by the Commission on Appointments (CA) for a second time due to citizenship issues and previous libel convictions.

“Whatever we say, difficulties he faced with the committee on appointments or the CA, the time that he was running the DSWD, he did a very good job. So we can’t lose that kind of asset so we’ll find something that he can do so we can take advantage of his good instincts when it comes to social service,” he added.

Marcos named Tulfo DSWD chief in May last year. DSWD Undersecretary Eduardo Punay currently serves officer-in-charge of the agency.

Angping’s diplomatic post Meanwhile, Marcos also de-

fended his decision to nominate former Presidential Management Staff chief Zenaida Angping as the country’s ambassador to France, with concurrent jurisdiction over Monaco.

To recall, the President allowed Angping to take a leave in December “to take some personal time for herself and her family,” according to the Presidential Communications Office.

He said it was Angping herself who asked to be given a diplomatic position.

“...She came back and she said maybe I can just find something that will not – that I will be able to handle. And I said, ‘What do you think?’ And she said, ‘If you could appoint me to a diplomatic position?’,” Marcos said.

He acknowledged that Angping has not formally held a diplomatic position but has been working with the foreign service for several years.

Marcos also cited her experience working as long-time aide to his uncle Benjamin “Kokoy” Romualdez, who was once the Philippine

Conference to unify efforts for learning recovery

Department of Education (DepEd) has conducted the 2022 National Planning Conference (NPC) to prepare the entire Department for the implementation of the learning recovery plan. “Learning Recovery, Resiliency, and Unity” are the core values which aimed to inform the field offices on implementing the Basic Education Development Plan 2030 (BEDP 2030) to achieve its commitments and goals.

Vice President and Education Chief Sara Z. Duterte in her video message said: “Today’s National Planning Conference will act as a sounding board in our learning recovery strategy for the upcoming school year. Support to the present administration’s goal of improving the country’s education quality through the use of evidence in planning, research programming, and policy development,” is vital in realization of DepEd Goals.

Focus on innovative responses and initiatives from all DepEd strands and units to address educational imperatives in the Basic Education sector is needed. BEDP 2030 will be used to be able to project the administration’s priority programs for the next six years until 2028,” this will help us realize the learning recovery of our learners and

ambassador to the United States, China and Saudi Arabia.

“Tao ‘yan ng Uncle Kokoy ko (She used to work under my Uncle Kokoy). And she worked in the American embassy, the Philippine embassy in the United States. She worked in – she worked in well, China. She worked in all of the areas that we were slowly opening up. So sanay siya sa trabahong ‘yan (So she’s used to the job),” he added.

Angping was also a former representative of the third district of Manila.

Marcos’ bucket list

Amid mounting calls for Marcos to name a full-time Department of Agriculture (DA) chief to address issues hounding the agriculture sector, he maintained that he was still needed in the agency.

“...There really are things that I can do that if there was a secretary and he or she did it, hindi –magagawa pero matagal, madaming diskusyon (they could do it but it would take time, there would be many discussions)… The President they cannot say no to. And ‘pag hindi nila ginawa ‘yung utos ko, puwede kong sitahin (And if they don’t follow my orders, I can reprimand them),” he said.

improve learners learning achievement.

It highlighted the importance of using the grassroots approach VP-Secretary Duterte is doing in addressing perennial issues in the education sector. The need to accelerate efforts in addressing the enormous challenge of education quality and that everyone must be involved. Deped also started lessening teachers’ administrative work, in this way, teachers can focus in teaching and be relived from non-teaching related work.

To address problems in management, operations, and curriculum in each regional office, DepEd Regional Directors also presented their respective Regional Education Development Plan (REDP) to the Executive Committee members and selected Central Office directors through breakout sessions.

In the Division level, PSDSs, CID and SGOD and other sections in the Division crafted the DEDP for Misamis Oriental Division headed by the Planning Section. School concerns were delivered by the Public Schools District Supervisors. (https://www. deped.gov.ph/2022/11/21/ deped-holds-2022-national-planning-conference-tounify-efforts-for-learningrecovery/)

Creativity as powerful tool for learning

CLASSROOMS for every academic level were specifically envisioned to suit the learning phase, thinking process and day to day educational activities of its students. Creativity motivates kids to learn.

Decades of research link creativity with the intrinsic motivation to learn. When students are focused on a creative goal, they become more absorbed in their learning and more driven to acquire the skills they need to accomplish it.

Creativity belongs everywhere, not just in childhood games and extracurriculars. It involves all of your senses and creates new knowledge that didn’t exist before. Stu -

He shared items he would need to achieve on his “bucket list” before he stepped down as DA chief and appointed a replacement such as aiding farmers, improving research and development (R&D) and adopting new crop varieties.

“In terms of production, we have to help the farmers… We are trying to adopt new techniques for farming that will actually, I think, that we will be able to use – new technology, new variety, start with the R&D,” Marcos said.

He said he is also coordinat-

ing with several other countries in search of non-traditional suppliers, particularly for the supply of fertilizer, wheat, rice and corn.

“Hopefully down the road, in the few years, we no longer have to worry about non-traditional supply because we will be able to produce enough for ourselves,” he added.

According to Marcos, the country’s agriculture sector is facing multifaceted problems as demand overtook production, which put pressure on prices, leaving the government with no choice but to import.

“‘Pag maayos na ‘yan, that is one box that I’ve been – I will tell I’ve been able to tick… But we come back to the problem of production… Then, we will have a [DA] secretary who will then take my place and will implement that plan. Basta’t alam nating nakakaintindi ito sa ating ginagawa. So those are the essential elements that I’m talking about,” he said. (PNA)

Good Health Bridges Leaner’s Success

dents of all ages need to learn by creating. It helps to synthesize information and bring joy and meaning into their educational experience.

Is there anything satisfying than making something creative? A quilt, a webpage, a decoration, an invention? As a child, do you remember the pride you felt when you showed your parents a LEGO ceration or a fairy house or even a mud pie?

In addition to creating, students also need to share their ideas with the world. Open the doors to your classroom to host a parent night, invite other classes in to see yours or bring in volunteers and community members.

One of the most precious gifts given to us by our Almighty God is our health. Being physically fit all the time is our common petition. We can only do our individual tasks accordingly based from how healthy we are in all aspects. Teachers and learners need to be physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and socially able so that the learning process takes place inside the classroom.

According to World Health Organization, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely an absence of disease or infirmity.”

Generally, each one of us has its different opinion about good health. Others may consider good health as a resemblance on how people act, think, or even how they treat other people in the society but, there are

those who look into the appearance before concluding into a judgment or a conclusion.

In the four wall of a classroom, usually, children’s reasons on making absences are as follows: headache, stomachache, toothache, fever and the likes. Others might be white lies but mostly, learners really experienced such aches in reality, causing them not to attend classes. If this is the scenario, constant and always making absences affect learner’s performance or even results to drop outs.

Based from my day to day teachings, those learners who do not have health problems, and attended classes at all times excel academically. This simply implies that, in the teaching and learning process, good health is necessary for it bridges learner’s success all the way.

“That is one of our duties and obligations in order to ensure that our teachers and learners are protected in our DepEd schools,” the chair of the House committee on Basic Education and culture said. (PNA)

He said the government is looking to enter into an agreement with Sumitomo-Thales and separate the issue of claims.

“We met with Sumitomo-Thales a few weeks ago and we suggested that we negotiate for a permanent maintenance agreement pending the settlement of the issues,” he said.

Aside from upgrading the CNS/ ATM system, the government is also looking to create an offsite permanent back-up system, possibly in another airport, to keep the system redundant and further minimize the possibility of issues that could affect airport operations.

“We will need to prepare a feasibility study to do this and for us to be able to determine the cost which we will present to NEDA (National Economic and Development Authority) for approval and for funding either from ODA (official development assistance) or from GAA (General Appropriations Act),” he said. Educational Technology in the New Normal Educational Setting

WE approach 2023 with clear-cut priorities for educational technology and educational as a whole. Education and student well-being are stretched thin and lingering learning gaps, exacerbated by the pandemic, present hurdles for all students, especially underrepresented student groups who are already at a disadvantage.

Digital learning cemented itself as a must have in schools this year and equity remained front and center too, continuing conversations around inequitable technology access along with racial and socioeconomic disparities and discrimination.

We’re headed into a fourth year of learning in the pan-

demic’s shadow. While massive Covid quarantines and school closures have diminished, we’re still grappling with the impact of learning during a global pandemic. This begs the question: what’s next for education?

Looking ahead, I think we will see more educators helping students get a better understanding of clean energy and its connections to climate change and the wider economy. Educators will seek out content that better supports them to successfully bring clean energy content to their students in meaningful ways and as the job market in clean energy continues to grow, it is important for schools to help meet this demand.

Digital connectivity

TECHNOLOGY has made learning from anywhere a reality. Courses, coaching and assessments are now being delivered to every corner of the planet – serving millions of students simultaneously. And while the desire for quality education and reputable qualifications has not hcanged, the business landscape has.

The reach of digital connectivity has helped schools embrace more flexibility and increasingly offer online classes. Studies have also found that traditional lectures alone can be ineffective and inefficient ways of teaching compared with digital experiences that allow more interaction and problem-solving practice.

As hands-on learning and

teaching from anywhere appear to be shaping the future of the sector, companies are looking to capitalize on these new trends. Digital connectivity is an all-encompassing term used to describe mobile or fixed connections to the Internet. Being connected in this way has become part of the fabric of everyday life – as important to communities and businesses as a water, gas or electricity connection.

With better access to high speed and reliable broadband and mobile connections, local communities can access public services more conveniently and purchase goods online at a lower cost. People can work from home, cutting out their commute and improving their quality of life.

life-support? Why have we failed to seize control of our survival?” That veneration to that self is not being denied, contrary to Christ’s teaching.

Pope Francis in his Encyclical Letter – which was back by al the major faiths –referred to climate change as “a sin against God.” Recently, Queen Elizabeth was so furious blaming governments’ inaction against climate change stating that “there should be legal action against governments for the crime of omission to protect the right to life of their populations. Apparent is the ongoing political and media efforts to suppress climate change as a crisis: by denial, by under-reporting solutions to it.”

Indeed, it is an unprecedented crime against humanity as the contemporaneous development paradigm called neo-liberal capitalism being advanced by corporate globalization continuously sacrifices Mother Earth and humanity to the altar of greed and profit. We are now in the 23rd year of the 21st century but we do not know whether we will reach the 22nd century which is only 77 years from now. Every day, a thousand hectares of the 386-meter high iceberg are melting in the Arctic and the Antarctic that is giving rise to the ocean level. The Philippines now has some 7,100 islands but according to environmentalists, there will just be 3,000 islands fifty years from now. Some 100 species of flora and fauna are becoming extinct everyday due to climate change as billions have already become extinct. This is especially true in our country which has been considered by FAO as the richest on earth with regards to biodiversity but have been erased from the face of the earth as we have lost the 17 million hectares of dipterocarp forest in just a century due to massive illegal logging. Don’t you know that the number of flora and fauna found in just 5,000 hectare-Mt. Kitanglad Range is far greater compared to those found in one billion-hectare continent of North America?

Worse through the Anthropocene, with the Greek roots meaning “human-made” (anthropo) and “new” (cene), Gaia (Mother Earth) is now facing its 6th extinction, that is, if this species will continue its collective insanity through the egoic chattering mind. But the wind of change is now hovering through the looming of an awakening consciousness. Human BEING is more than form but an eternal formless Being that is pure consciousness that has been there prior to being a form (body). It is the teaching of all major religions that there is someone coming to liberate us and all the while, we have been waiting. The truth is, what we have been waiting for is really that consciousness that is inherent in every one of us, our spiritual awakening – the Stillness that is our essential nature. Feel that stillness and oneness with all things and you become Spiritus Luminus (enlightened spirit) and be transformed into homo pacem (men and women for peace). Such can be done by following Jesus’ pronouncement to “DENY THYSELF.”

There is now an on-going shift toward collective consciousness and spirituality of all people of the world that must now heal the wounds

of GAIA and those of Her children, damaged all these years through false religions and western development materialistic and consumerist paradigm that sacrificed the people and the ecosystems to the altar of greed and profit, controlled by the egoic mind. Free yourself from over thinking. Feel life deep within and connect with the Innermost Being called God! Indeed, time is just an illusion. What matters is the Now. Time doesn’t exist at all for life continues here and beyond. And when love is in one’s heart, time and space have no meaning for love transcends everything. Not even death can have power over that supreme force in the universe as the beloved is always carried in one’s heart, in one’s inner consciousness – forever!

In denying oneself , a human being will now know who truly he is, CONSCIOUSNESS who is rooted with the Unseen Formless Being. It will on by then that Jesus pronouncement will be understood, “That the kingdom of heaven is within us.” Feel the Stillness and Spaciousness deep within to know who truly you are. Then, you will know who truly you are being eternal and being life itself. Thus be rooted with the Unseen Being and feel that oneness with all of God’s creation which is true love. Debunk thyself and be liberated from suffering. As the Great Buddha Himself has said, self means DUKHA or suffering.

aduna namay donated nga property ug dili na mag problema ang syudad kung asa pangitaon ang ibayad sa yuta,” the mayor said in vernacular.

The mayor said the first city college will be constructed in the hinterland barangay so that it will not also affect the existing state colleges and universities in the city.

Last week, the mayor learned that City Hall was able to secure a 10-hectare land donation from a group of lumads in the hinterland barangay.

As this city college plan developed, another 18 lumads also informed the city mayor that they would also donate 2-hectare from each of them that would also make it a total of 46 hectares.

Aside from helping the poor residents of the hinterland barangays, Mayor Uy also envisioned developing the agricultural sector in the far-flung barangays.

In October of 2022 during the groundbreaking of the 5-story CDRRMD building, Uy announced that the city college will be constructed in zone 8, barangay Carmen but it did not materialize. - with a report from CIO

To further promote dive tourism in the region, DOT-10 gave birth to Dive NorthMin, where they collaborate with the region’s local government units to hold dive seminars and training, coastal clean-ups, and dive photography contests. One of which was showcased at the Camiguin Dive Festival in December 2022.

Dive surveys and awareness programs are also conducted in communities with underlying potential for dive sites.

Local divers and tour guides can also take part in the tourism industry skills program, which focuses on helping the community improve its way of life and get back on its feet economically after the pandemic.

Aside from boosting local tourism, environmental conservation and protection of marine life, coral reefs,

Secondary Education and Teaching

Teachers have a significant impact on students’ lives.

One of the responsibilities of a teacher is to motivate students to achieve their full potential. Students are viewed as the country’s and humanity’s future, and teachers are respected as reliable mentors who can help them succeed.

Teachers are in charge of guiding pupils not just in academics or extracurricular activities, but also in shaping their destinies and developing them into better people. Students learn from their teachers about modern issues, good values, traditions, and how to overcome them. An excellent instructor is beneficial to the kids.

The school system has benefited greatly from the contributions of teachers. They are a crucial component of school development and help students achieve their goals, including the development of collaborative, problem-solving, and creative thinking abilities. An excellent secondary teacher is one who, by using effective teaching methods, greatly

influences and enables all of their students—regardless of socioeconomic status—to achieve noteworthy results and learn more knowledge. In general, instructors’ roles involve assisting students in learning by conveying knowledge to them and creating an environment that fosters learning. However, the functions that instructors play are varied and vary from civilization to society and from one educational level to another. Some of these roles are performed in the school, and some in the community.

Teachers might prepare by assisting students in understanding information and ideas outside of the textbook. Students will grasp the material better and be more aware of it the more the professors engage them with relevant, real-world examples, occurrences, etc. They can use examples from everyday life to apply their lessons to a variety of topics. Here, the teacher must act as a reliable mentor to aid the pupil in progressing from one class to the next.

Suzuki Philippines opens renovated dealership in Butuan

Suzuki Philippines –the pioneer in compact vehicles distribution nationwide – opened last January 20 the new and improved Suzuki Auto Butuan.

Located in barangay Baan, Suzuki Auto Butuan now offers complete offerings such as sales, service and spare parts.

The opening of Suzuki Auto Butuan last Thursday culminated more than two years of construction as Suzuki Philippines navigated the challenges of the pandemic when the Butuan dealership renovation broke ground last February 2020, a mere month before Covid-19 struck.

The new auto house is now a 3s dealership, boasting a capability to display and accommodate seven units. It is also expected to be within reach to existing and potential patrons in the area and neighboring provinces of Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Sur with a higher quality of integrated service.

Suzuki Auto Butuan is owned and managed by Grand Canyon Multi Holdings Inc., which currently manages 11 Suzuki dealerships strategically positioned in progressive cities nationwide.

Despite being affected by the pandemic (as with every

business elsewhere in the world), Suzuki Philippines has kept its aggressive momentum across the Philippines and opening new dealerships every now

and then. Prior to the Butuan opening, Suzuki Philippines has opened another state of the art dealership in San Pablo City, Laguna only last November.

With this latest development, Suzuki Philippines is optimistic that the new dealership will boost the company’s momentum in 2023. A firm highly

recognized in the automotive industry, Suzuki Philippines specializes in the distribution of compact vehicles all over the country.
