PBBM eyes to bring down rice prices this Christmas

“Kadiwa ng Pasko” project could lower rice prices this holiday season.

“The 20 pesos was really the goal, the dream is paabutin natin ng 20 pesos. We are trying to do… we are continuing with the transfer payments that we have begun with. We are going to widen the scope of the Kadiwa,” President Marcos said in an interview with the media in Los Baños, Laguna.

December harvest to help stabilize soaring red onion prices: DA

MANILA – Upcoming harvest of red onions in December shall help the supply situation in the country amid the soaring market prices, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA).

In the Laging Handa press briefing, DA Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista said several farmers confirmed harvest dates next month.

“Iyong iba po ang sabi (others said), second week of December. May iba po nagsabi na (Others said) last week of December. So ngayon po ay tinitingnan natin kung gaano kalaki ang kanilang volume na iha-harvest dahil ito po ay

makakatulong sa pagdagdag ng ating supply (As of now we are looking into the volume that shall be harvested because it will help suffice our supply),” she said.

The DA is set to determine the onion supply inventory this week, considering the soaring prices in several markets, hitting as much as PHP300 per kilogram.

“Inaasahan naman po natin na malapit na rin po ang harvest ng ating mga magsasaka, and that will definitely help pagdating po sa ating supply situation para po sa sufficiency based po sa demand ng ating mga consumers (We are expecting the nearing harvest of our farmers, and

that will definitely help when it comes to sufficient supply situation based on the consumers’ demand),” Evangelista added.

Kadiwa ng Pasko Evangelista, meanwhile, said consumers may avail of lower prices of red onions in the DA’s Kadiwa market.

“May PHP280. Mayroon pa nga po kaming nakitang PHP300. Kaya ngayon po, kami ay nakikipag-ugnayan sa Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) para makita natin ang supply situation para malaman natin kung anong kadahilanan ng pag-spike ng presyo (There’s PHP280. We’ve even seen PHP300. That’s why we are now coordinating with the BPI

Three Significant Outcomes of Learning Action Cell to Teachers

The Department of Education (DepEd) has been exerting efforts to innovate, revolutionize, and reform systems in order to address the continuous development of their teachers and staff in relation to trainings and workshops. DepEd leaders met to discuss and employ efforts for varied collaborations and deliberations in order to come up with the same goals and objectives, i.e. to unceasingly prosper the implementation of Learning Action Cell to all DepEd learning venues.

Teachers on the other hand are undeniably the cream of the crop of each teaching arena in the country. The central processing unit of their chosen field which is the educational sector. The very catalyst to changing the world and hastening agent in making younger lives better on their future dealings. One of the most influential human populace who are much capable in making the realm of living creatures wonderfully different. Thus, it is valid to know that DepEd is incessant in utilizing its resources to address the sustainability of Learning Action Cell and how to keep it efficient, updated, and above all rationalized.

Subsequently, keeping it like what the above words

are saying is extremely if not often than not, will give three significant outcomes to teachers exclusively when it comes to continuous professional development or growth.

Firstly, it allows the teachers to be engaged into nonstop learning opportunities. As speakers are given topics to discuss which are carefully picked, selected, and supported with a detailed matrix which underwent into thorough review by school leaders and the like.

Secondly, it gives everyone the chance to speak and be heard. Provided with a comprehensive plan of action, each teacher has given an own topic to discuss and talk about. In contrast, each teacher has set to see and hear new and interesting ideas beneficial to their profession as classroom teachers or in light and preparation to their leadership undertaking in the future.

Thirdly, it guides and develops the teachers’ unremitting desire to seek for excellence in preparing their assigned topics in order to deliver it successfully with the hope that all expected listeners will clearly understand the allocated discussions. That maximum comprehension and knowledge acquisition will not be compromised nor bargained.

Immigration, airport personnel implicated in Myanmar trafficking

MANILA – Airport and Bureau of Immigration (BI) personnel allegedly facilitated the outbound trafficking of Filipinos to Myanmar, where they are being used to dupe clients using cryptocurrency, a Senate hearing revealed on Tuesday.

Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros, chair of the Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality which conducted the hearing along with the Migrant Workers committee, said human

trafficking is being carried out by individuals who have alleged connections with BI and airport employees.

BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said they will coordinate with Hontiveros to seek further information.

“We are also interested to find out how these victims were able to depart despite stringent immigration assessment,” he said in a statement.

Hontiveros presented an alias Paulo, who was illegally recruited to work for a telemarketing company in the western Thailand city of Mae Sot.

He later learned that he will be doing a cryptoscamming job in nearby Myanmar.

Paulo said his recruiter, whom he identified as Laisa Magallanes, told him an “escort” would help expedite his departure from the Philippines but PHP30,000 would be deducted from his salary for this service.

The senator said that even if Paulo did not pass through the immigration counter, his passport was marked with the official BI exit stamp while “somebody” exempted him from

LTO eyes rollout of single ticketing system in Q1 2023

MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is looking to roll out the single ticketing system designed to harmonize the different traffic violations and penalties of different local government units (LGU) with the LTO system by the first quarter of 2023.

In a Laging Handa interview on Tuesday, LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Jose Arturo Tugade, said consultative meetings are currently being held with stakeholders while a draft memorandum circular on the single ticketing system has already been circulated.

“We’re just waiting for feedback po doon sa ating mga partners dito po sa programa (We’re just waiting for feedback from our program partners),” Tugade said.

Once rolled out, he said the single ticketing system is expected to improve the country’s road and traffic conditions as erring drivers will not only be issued fines but will also receive demerit points in the LTO system.

“Ma-monitor po natin ang performance ng ating mga drivers via a common demerit points system (We’ll

Legazpi City awards 92 smoke-free establishments

LEGAZPI CITY – The City Health Office (CHO) here on Tuesday awarded 92 offices, places and businesses for winning the 2022 Search for 100% Smoke-Free Establishments.

During the awarding ceremony at the Legazpi City Convention Center, City Health Officer Dr. Fulbert Alec Gillego handed over a plaque of commendation to all the winning establishments that included restaurants, villages, hospitals and government agencies.

In his message, Gillego said “We have so many plans in the coming years, particularly improving the criteria for the compliant establishments.”

He emphasized that the implementation of the ordinance is a shared responsibility among different groups including religious organizations, national government agencies, the business sector, law enforcers and the CHO as the lead implementing office.

“Smoking cessation clinic is free in the city of Legazpi. It is a program of the CHO where doctors interview smokers and we provide them benefits such as free chest x-ray, electrocardiogram (ECG), and more importantly blood chemistry,”

he said.

Gillego said billboards and signages were placed in public places, conveyances and other crowded areas as part of promoting Legazpi as a smoke-free city.

“We are not banning smoking but we are only regulating it in Legazpi,” he said.

Legazpi City’s SmokeFree Program started with the implementation of Ordinance No. 0007-2009 or the revised smoke-free law authored by former coun -

cilor, now Board Member Roly Rosal.

The ordinance was enacted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod and approved by Mayor Geraldine Rosal in 2009.

For three consecutive years from 2010 to 2013, the city government of Legazpi was a recipient of the Red Orchid and a Hall of Fame awards from the Department of Health (DOH) for its effective implementation of the anti-cigarette smoking campaign. ( PNA )

Army educates youth vs. NPA recruitment

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Northern Luzon Command (Nolcom) has launched its national security awareness drive for senior high school students in the region.

Dubbed as “UniVISITy”, the project aims to raise awareness on the communist terrorist group’s (CTG) strategies to draw in students and the youth sector, strengthen the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, and recruit students to become peace and development

advocates.

Lt. Gen. Ernesto C. Torres Jr., Nolcom commander, said on Tuesday that the launching of the project was held at Jose V. Yap National High School in Tarlac City where some 1,500 students attended the program symposium.

During the event, the Situational Awareness and Knowledge Management Cluster of the Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (RTF-ELCAC) presented the deceptive recruitment of the CTG.

Likewise, former rebels turned Philippine Army soldiers, Private Ivylyn Corpin and Private Lady Desiree Miranda, shared their stories and experiences in the armed struggle and as today’s peace advocates.

The Police Community Affairs and Development Unit of the Tarlac Police Provincial Office, on the other hand, educated the students about the antiillegal drugs campaign.

THOSE intriguing words of Christ, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned, you have revealed them to the childlike,” (Lk 10,21) should clearly reassure us that it always pays to be simple, humble and child-like.

Reinforcing that claim are also these words of Christ addressed to his disciples who in general were just a bunch of simple and humble people with all their share of weaknesses: “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.” (Lk 10,24)

Somehow, we are reminded of what St. Paul said regarding this point: “God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.” (1 Cor 1,2729) Of course, St. Peter said something similar: “God resists the proud, and gives

grace to the humble.” (1 Pt 5,5)

Amid the complexities of our life today, we have to learn to stay humble and simple because that is the basic way to precisely handle these complexities well. When we are humble and simple, we would know how to blend openness, tolerance and versatility on the one hand, and to stick to the truth in charity on the other hand.

It is genuine humility and simplicity that would enable us to face the complexities of our life because these are the virtues that liken and identify us with Christ. And with Christ, we can manage to tackle anything.

That is why Christ said: “Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden light.”

(Mt 11,29-30)

Of course, this is a mysterious and intriguing kind of reasoning that Christ is telling us. And that is simply because he is telling us something that is mainly spiritual and supernatural in character. He is not giving us an indication that is meant to tackle purely natural situations and predicaments. We have to realize that

Law needed to level playing field in motorcycle taxi industry

WHEN it comes to the country’s transportation situation and commuter satisfaction, surveys from local and international think tank groups would always put the Philippines in the lowest ranks.

A UK-based study conducted by insurance technology site GoShorty, showed that Manila ranks as the eighth worst in the world in terms of hours spent in traffic. With a 43 percent congestion level, Filipinos in these cities lose 98 hours to traffic annually.

In addition, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said that Metro traffic congestion in Metro Manila alone results in some PHP3 billion losses daily. It added that this amount could balloon to PHP5.4 billion by 2035.

Boston Consulting Group, meanwhile, revealed that in 2017, Manila’s traffic congestion cost motorists an average of over an hour lost in traffic every day, putting it at third worst in Southeast Asia.

As Christmas holiday looms, the Filipino commuter’s distressing situation gets even worse.

Transport experts projected that more and more Filipinos will rely

on ride-hailing services to get through traffic. The motorcycle taxi industry in particular is gaining popularity.

As compared with ridehailing cabs, tapping motorcycle taxis have become a sensible choice for the commuting public as it significantly lessens travel time, and by far cheaper than other public modes of transportation.

In other neighboring countries such as Vietnam, Singapore and Indonesia, motorcycle taxi is already an established business model.

In the Philippines, a Motorcycle Taxi bill (House Bill 10571) had already been passed, and Manila 2nd District Representative and House Committee on Metro Manila Development chair Rolando Valeriano said he will help push its swift passage into law.

Currently, three motorcycle taxi companies -Angkas, JoyRide and Move It -- were given a special provision to operate motorcycle taxis as part of the government’s pilot-testing program.

But several months ago, questions were raised when Grab Philippines, arguably the most established transportation network company

our life does not only have material, temporal and natural dimensions. It has an eminently spiritual and supernatural character for which the spiritual and supernatural means are more important and necessary than the natural ones.

Humility and simplicity are the virtues that would make us acknowledge that we are nothing without God. They sort of open our soul for the grace of God to enter. And it is this grace that transforms us, irrespective of our human impotencies, mistakes and errors, into becoming children of God.

And with God’s grace in our soul because of our humility and simplicity, we can manage to receive the gifts of faith, hope and charity. We can believe natural truths that not only are difficult to discover but also to understand. Even more, it is humility and simplicity that would enable us to believe supernatural truths where there is no way for us to fully understand them, much less, explain them in a human way.

in the country, recently acquired Move It. Concerns over the takeover’s impact on the consumers are now being raised at the House of Representatives.

At a recent interpellation, the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC) found no need to review the merger because the transaction did not meet the PCC’s minimum threshold to justify one.

Marikina 2nd District Representative and exPCC Chair Stella Quimbo, however, expressed disappointment at the regulatory agency’s seeming lack of concern and inaction over Grab’s compliance regarding its 2018 voluntary commitments to stop overpricing and overcharging.

The motorcycle-for-hire industry is clearly expanding -- a solution to traffic and commuting woes that emerged in this new normal. But as of this writing, the Philippines is yet to have a legislation that would regulate the operations of motorcycle taxis -- and the government must fast-track crafting one, to allow and

German firms urged to invest in PH infra

MANILA – Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Alfredo Pascual has urged German investors to look into business opportunities in the Philippines, especially in areas of infrastructure, electric vehicles, manufacturing and services.

In a business forum of German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GPCCI) in Makati City Tuesday, Pascual said they may tap the 300 billion euros Global Gateway Fund of the European Union (EU) to participate in the ongoing infrastructure developments in the country.

“The new Philippine administration has revived the private-public partnership (PPP) arrangements for infrastructure projects in the fields of water storage and management, renewables, waste management, logistics and transportation, and disaster mitigation,” he said.

Being a global leader in

e-vehicles (EV), Pascual encouraged German firms to partner in this sector and support industries in EV manufacturing, including mineral processing.

Coffee as a worldwide beverage can be traced back to the Ethiopian plateau. Although no one knows exactly how or when coffee was discovered, this black beverage has travelled from the Arabian Peninsula to the new world in mid-1600’s. Coffee has been regarded by Thomas Jefferson as the favorite drink of the civilized world. This drink has been brought to every table at home, office, or restaurant and it became one of the basic commodities across the world.

School Head Mrs. Fe D. Arancon of Tagoloan National High School (TNHS) believes that to cope with our normal stress in school and in life we need time to relax as a group and exchange laughter about how our days went by. The establishment of Tagoloan National High School’s KaFehan is the idea of Mrs. Arancon. Considering our hectic schedules, having social connection and healthy conversation with friends, listening to music, and performing Random Act of Kindness together with a cup of coffee promotes a happy

school for the teaching and non-teaching staff so we can serve our community better.

The KaFehan aims to encourage the faculty and staff of TNHS to take a few minutes off from work as we end our weekdays of hard labor. Recognizing the effort of the staff especially during this pandemic is worth rewarding with a cup of coffee spent with friends and workmates. The goal is to protect the mental and emotional state of the faculty and staff during this time of uncertainty. The relaxation provided by the KaFehan ignites connection between the faculty and staff, as we unload worries through meaningful conversations to overcome challenges in the delivery of educational services, and more importantly to check on each other’s well-being. A few minutes or an hour spent with workmates and friends over a cup of coffee in our enticing KaFehan corner within the school is truly a remarkable idea as we can catch up with one another while creating a happy and healthy Tagoloan National High School community.

Personalized learning environment

TEACHERS are always finding ways to integrate new strategies into their teaching. Nowadays, in-person and virtual learning is made possible and convenient with all the technological innovations. One of the most frequently used and reliable teaching aids are interactive videos.

The use of interactive videos guarantees effective and efficient learning for students and teachers. They can be easily accessed anytime, anywhere. Convenience is just the least that these educational videos can offer, given that they impact both parties in ways that flat videos and prepandemic classes couldn’t.

Personalized learning experience is a way of personalizing one’s learning experi-

ence. Interactive videos offer participants a sense of user control in a way that allows them to design and organize their virtual learning environment and experience. They can watch and learn from these videos at their own pace without pressure from teachers or classmates. Plus, they always have a choice to either jump to advance contents of the topic or stick to the given basics. Interactive videos focus more on selfdirectorya nd self decision making.

As mentioned, interactive videos offer convenience to students and teachers. Since they can be delivered and completed virtually, they are perfect for online and blended learning.

“Para itong Pastillas part 2, pero mas malala at mas mapusok. May kinalaman din ba ang mga airport security o personnel? Nasa bulsa at kakuntsaba ba ng mga BI o airport officials ang mga illegal recruiter? Ang sakit na napapahamak ang napakaraming Pilipino sa ibang bansa dahil sa kapwa nating Pilipino na nananamantala dahil sa pansariling interes (Is this a Pastillas 2 but worse and more daring? Are airport security or personnel involved? Is the illegal recruiter being paid by BI or airport personnel? It’s sad that Filipinos are being victimized by their countrymen to serve their own interest),” Hontiveros said.

“Pastillas” was a previous human trafficking scheme by BI employees who facilitated the entry of illegal Chinese nationals to the Philippines, with the accomplices receiving grease money wrapped in Japanese paper, like how the Filipino delicacy made of milk and sugar is prepared.

Last week, Hontiveros delivered a privilege speech about alias Rita and 11 other Filipinos who were promised jobs in Thailand

but were trafficked into Myanmar by a Chinese syndicate based in Shwe Kokko, a town in the Kayin State of Myanmar.

In October, Tansingco issued an advisory to BI inspectors to conduct strict assessment of travelers departing for neighboring countries after receiving reports that Filipinos were being illegally recruited and transported to a third country to work as call center agents for a company that operates online scams.

“These human traffickers try to circumvent immigration assessment by adjusting their modus operandi,” he said. “Oftentimes, syndicates provide fake employment documents and statements to their victims.”

In 2021, the BI deferred the departure of 13,860 passengers for improper documentation and foiled 688 attempts of human trafficking and illegal recruitment at international ports.

Tansingco said they are also closely coordinating with the Department of Migrant Workers and the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking to update policies on trafficking and illegal recruitment.

I believe that learning to read is an essential skill that helps children and adults have a more enjoyable life.

Books are like rollercoasters taking you down interesting twists and turns and leading you to exciting new worlds. Can you imagine how dull life would be if you could not read? Reading is the building block to learning and helps teach positive values which are good for a healthy mind. A book can teach you about the mysteries that life holds or how to bake a cake.

The benefits of reading are endless. There is no

better feeling than getting lost in a good book. Some people have difficulty learning to read but with hard work, they can learn the skills needed to read independently.

The first step to learning to read is to learn each letter of the alphabet over again. Equal priority is being given to improving the quality of teaching and learning that takes place in schools nationwide. After all, getting children into school is only the first step in education. Ensuring students are learning and staying in school are crucial goals.

Parental involvement in way of discipline

TO comply with the system of integrated support for their students, schools need to build partnership with parents and develop mutual responsibility for children’s success in the educational system. In this way, parental involvement are increased, parents’ effort to support schools are encouraged and they are directly making a positive impact to a successful educational system.

Considering the importance of parents’ participation and involvement in school activities, many researchers recognize the important role that strong positive bond between homes and schools, play in the development and education of children. The theories put forward have

been supported and reaffimed by numerous studies that have shown that good cooperation between schools, homes and the communities can lead to academic achievement for students as well as to reforms in the education.

Research also has shown that successful students have strong academic support from their involved parents. Furthermore, research on effective school, those where students are learning and achieving, has consistently shown that these schools despite often working in low social and economic neighborhoods, have strong and positive school-home relationships. More importantly, these effective schools with positive ahead climate.

Marcos maintained that he has a “timetable” for when he would name a new DA Secretary, which will be based on after he has completed his “to-do” list.

“I have a timetable for that. There are certain things I like to achieve before leaving the department so hindi pa tayo nandun (we haven’t reached that point yet),” he said.

The President said he is still in the process of reviewing the list of candidates for DA chief but expressed hope he would name a nominee when all boxes on the checklist are ticked.

“Of course, maraming lumalabas na pangalan. Tuloy-tuloy ang pagtingin namin. So hopefully by the time na yung checklist ko natapos na, mayroon na tayong puwedeng i-nominate na DA (Of course, many names are emerging and we continue to review them. So hopefully by the time the checklist is done, we already have someone to nominate as DA chief),” he added.

Last month, Marcos said he continues to head the DA because he is still “needed” there.

“There are things that a President can do that a secretary cannot, especially because precisely the reason that you gave,” he said in a media interview on October 20.

He also said there are problems in the agriculture sector that are “so difficult that it will take a president to change and turn it around.”

Marcos said DA officials are supportive of his decision to remain as DA chief, adding that issues hounding the agriculture sector are “deeply embedded.”

“The reason that I stay

on up to now, I have actually raised the subject with some of the staff and the employees and the secretaries in the DA, and they asked me not to,” he said.

“Very deeply embedded ang mga problema natin sa agrikultura. Ito ay nangyari sa nakaraang napakaraming taon. Kaya’t hindi ganoon kabilis, hindi ganoon kadali na ibalik sa ating magandang sistema dati. Kaya’t (Our problems in agriculture are very deeply embedded. It has been happening for the past years. That’s why it’s not easy to bring it back to the system like before. That’s why) I think I am still needed there.”

In June, Marcos announced that he has decided to temporarily head the DA to urgently address the looming food crisis in the country.

He said heading the DA himself would show that the government prioritizes agriculture and allow measures to be carried out more quickly. ( PNA )

Once the system is online, he said the fines and penalties related to traffic violations will be “harmonized” instead of having different fines and penalties for each violation, with some LGUs issuing PHP300 fines and others PHP1,500 fines for not wearing a helmet.

“The intention is not to increase the penalty but to have a penalty that will serve as a deterrent,” he said.

The single ticketing system, he said, intends to “relieve our roads from irresponsible drivers.”

Not only this, legalization and regulation would help address safety risks in registered motorcycle-forhire and those operating in the black-market, called “habal-habal”. These will likewise improve commuter welfare by giving them the option to choose legitimate service providers.

PDEA-11 destroys P8.1-M illegal drugs

DAVAO CITY – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Davao Region (PDEA-11) has destroyed PHP8.1 million worth of illegal drugs seized during their various operations this year.

In a statement Tuesday, PDEA-11 spokesperson Noli Dimaandal said the destruction took place at the Wood Haven Crematorium in Tagum City, Davao del Norte on Nov. 26.

The burned illegal drugs consisted of 514 grams of shabu with a street value of PHP7.1 million and 7,637 grams of dried marijuana worth over PHP916,000.

Aileen Lovitos, PDEA-11 regional director, commended the “untiring effort” of the “five pillars of the criminal justice system...working hand in hand to suppress the supply of illegal drugs in our country.”

Lovitos also warned drug syndicates that the government’s war on drugs remains resolute under the new administration.

Meanwhile, Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib has assured the province’s full support in the government’s relentless campaign against illegal drugs.

“To the drug users, you better stop your habit because you are harming yourselves

Schools of the future

AS globalization and rapid advancements in technology continue to transform civic space and the world of work, education systems have grown increasingly disconnected from the realities and needs of global economies and societies. Education models must adapt to equip children with the skills to create a more inclusive, cohesive and productive world.

To fulfill the needs of today’s generation, futuristic schools are indeed the need of the hour. These well thought of and carefully designed schools make use of innovative teaching techniques to supply quality education to children. Their aim is to provide all together a new learning experience to students. This will allow in developing keen interest in

students regarding classroom topics and subjects. Also, it will change their perspective about classroom teaching.

On the quest of exploring horizons of education, these schools employ unique methodology and pedagogical approach. These approaches groom all round personality of the student and carve him into a future leader. These insights have developed a whole new school transformation system and have set a benchmark of best practices in education.

These schools are best as they provide holistic education to children. Best schools must be gauged on these parameters such as cleanliness, safety, comfort, adequacy, exploring, reliability, easiness, fine infrastructure and technologically sound.

and your future,” he said.

Jubahib said the provincial government offers free rehabilitation at the Luntiang Paraiso Regional Rehabilitation Center (LPRRC) and its Bahay Silangan Drug Reformation Center.

The governor also committed to give a PHP1 million reward to those who can give information to the authorities on the whereabouts of drug lords and drug pushers.

The governor also acknowledged the achievements of the municipalities of Talaingod and San Isidro, which were both recently declared as “drug-free” areas. (PNA)

NHS - Read Na Ta Ok! (Read NTO)

Amidst the pandemic time, Lumbia National High School is still committed to extend quality learning. The school never stops elevating the reading levels of the learners through designing and implementing varied activities and intervention that will cater the needs of the learners in terms of reading enhancement.

Project: Read Na Ta Ok! (Read NTO) is a school initiative, aiming to improve the reading skills specifically the reading comprehension skills of struggling learners during this pandemic. This project uses adaptable and enjoyable strategies to make reading motivating and fun. The school and teachers wish to help campers go

through this activity to prepare them in the faceto-face classes.

This project is an end of the school year reading camp for struggling readers. It is a fifteen-day reading enhancement which was done during end-ofthe-school-year break. The school invited young readers who have problems on reading comprehension from the Junior high school to join on the said activity. Teachers of different subject majors were assigned as reading specialist to facilitate the reading activity - namely Jennilyn F. Kaki- Mathematics, Jelje C. Luzana- MAPEH, Remeli M. Human Development in the Context of our Learners

Human development is defined as the process of increasing people’s liberties and opportunities while also improving their well-being. Human development is about ordinary people having complete freedom to choose who they are, what they do, and how they live.

Human Development in the context of our learner’s development is influenced by their living environment and the socioeconomic status of their family. The income and circumstances of parents have an impact on their children’s health, education, and income. Health gradients—differences in health across socioeconomic groups—often begin before birth and can accumulate until adulthood if not addressed. Children born into low-income families are more likely to have poor health and a lower level of education. Those with a lower level of education are less likely to earn as much as others, and children who are ill are more likely to miss school. When children grow up, if they marry someone from a similar socioeconomic

background,(as often happens in assortative mating).

My experience is concrete evidence that the development of our learners depends on the society they live in and their economic status. Learners coming from an economically stable family tend to develop mentally, physically, and socially positively compare to those economically challenge learners. They tend to be shy, aloof, and unhealthy, which leads them to stop going to school, so our role here as a teacher is to guide them to bring them to the right track that will lead them to a brighter future. I realized then that being a teacher is not an easy job because our role is not just teaching. I should learn to study the differences in our students, their needs, background, and economic status since all of these are factors for their development. I should have the determination to encourage them to continue learning despite whatever challenges they are experiencing to have better jobs and be economically stable in the future.

Carmelita C. ConsolacionEnglish, Karen Mae J. Cadete – English-TLE and Araceli B. Melliza – English-ESP. They were the teachers who in one way or another had helped to make the Reading project successful.

A varied and subject integration across curriculum activities were given to campers to improve their reading comprehension skills and an individual consultation or conference after every session was conducted.

With this project Read Na Ta Ok! (Read NTO), we believe that our struggling readers’ reading comprehension skills improves and prepares them for the new learning modality, the face-to-face classes.
