This project based on contradictions aims to embrace a small scale of a single family house and a large scale of an industrial box taking advantages of both typologies. Multi functional program is hosted on four levels. The ground floor is a public space, where citizens can take a rest next to the channel, participate in public events and Saturday market. The public activities are supported by underground levels where the supermarket and the parking are located.

8

The roof terrace is a community space for residents. It is an elevated forest, where they can meet to have a lunch together or go for an evening walk in a more reserved private environment. To access each single apartment, residents take a ramp or an elevator that, through one of the supporting bodies, bring them up to the terrace level. Then, in the garden, each of them can find their own stairs that bring each user to his or her house.

11

At the same time the high level of privacy is provided by patio house typology. While from the outside the building is a mute brutalist box inspired by 70s soviet housing, the inside patio is a soft intimate space filled with vegetation. Identity is another key aspect of the project. Even though each house has the same L-shape plan, internal space can be designed due to the user’s needs. The only fix points are bathrooms and stairs. In the study plan possibilities for four different

12

users are shown: an open space studio for a single man, a house for a young couple and two family typologies. The private house unit is a first brick and a departure point of this Metabolist projects. Four units form a structural entity, which is constructed with two-storied truss. The units can be added to the existing structure. Therefore, the housing can continue growing without any limits. The shape is secondary and depends on the context needs.

This ex social vinery is located in the middle of Monferrato hills. Both the tower and the lower building were used as deposits for wine fermentation process. However, with changing of economic situation there is no more request for a social canteen of such a huge dimension and so it was abandoned few years ago. New program gives space for an

22

agricultural hub with production and research activities and public functions. On the lower semi underground level directly connected to the fields, we put a small vinery and spaces for agricultural production. Production part is directly connected to laboratory building, where visiting students make research on specific plants pathologies.

23

Ground level is a big open courtyard (with both hard pavement and green areas, and wooden terrace connected to the restaurant) that welcomes public activities such as market (city of Vignale Monferrato has no specific place for a market now). Two storey concrete building is the main indoor public space. On the ground level, it is connected to courtyard by a wooden podium, which becomes an extension of the restaurant. On the upper level there is a bar and a shop with local products, which

is directly connected to the road level and parking. On the underground level world known Monferrato vine is being produce, and the visitors can take a tour and learn more about vine production. The main symbol of ex vinery the tower is a starting point of vine tour, with its small amphitheater on the ground floor. Tower‘s main body hosts double room for students (in the ex-wine pools), while the last floor is a common space for study and relax open to public.

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

27

This project is a renovation of Tsinghua University School of Architecture. The existing building was built in 90’s and does not answer nowadays spatial and energy requirements. Beside un-existing insulation, the huge problem of the building is the circulation, which takes place in only one point, where one elevator and one staircase bring students and personnel to each of five floors of School. Undergraduates, graduates, professors and university administration are strictly divided ones from the others, ad so no physical nor intellectual interaction is possible. To change this unhealthy and uncreative situation we base the project on the loop circulation, which passes through the whole building connecting floors, students and professors. New circulation system brings to the transformation of the building’s exterior from C shape open courtyard to a closed loop, which however remains open on the ground floor. To adapt better to the urban environment we cut the angles in correspondence with the main axes of Tsinghua campus. To create new exterior shape and new interior space, we add truss structure to existing beams and slabs. In order not to break the stability of existing structure, we keep the stairs and elevators as they are, adding the loop circulation system.

The core of new School so Architecture is a big workshop on the ground floor, visibly open to the main street and to the courtyard. You see it once you enter the building, and it is where the loop begins. It brings you through all five floors and through design spaces of Bachelor, Master and PhD students, as well of the professors. School system in based on 10-15 students units. School space is a huge open environment filled with private boxes for each unit. The box can extend to the work necessities. Circulation nodes 34

However, the main spaces for interaction and exchange are the nodes of the loop, which are the staircases containing a kitchen, a dinning and a sleeping rooms (Chinese always take a nap after lunch). The nodes and the whole loop system cut through old structure adding the new social value to the School.

Tsinghua University is one of the biggest in China and definitely the most important one. It is located in the North West of Beijing and occupied the territory of 395 ha, which is 5 times the territory of Forbidden City. In 2010 Tsinghua campus was named one of the most beautiful university campuses in the world (the only one from Chine presented on the list). In fact, its territory is reach and various: beside the teaching buildings, canteens and student dormitories, you will find historical

Chinese palace, the park and (unexpectedly) a number of 5 storey high (hrushevka style) buildings and 1 storey high barracks inhabited by retired professors and‌ immigrants from Chinese countryside. The presence of this neiborhood turned to be problematic to Tsinghua administration. The new masterplan approved in recent years decides to demolish all the residential (non students) buildings and to rent the territory to a new research center.

39

The strong division between university spaces and the barracks (university land used by strangers) does not present a healthy situation. Instead of demolishing existing buildings, expelling people and giving the land to the investors, we propose to keep the charming village and its residential function and to integrate students and residents of different cultures and generations. Therefore, the building on the ground floor remain to the present inhabitants, while on the first floor, we have a number of elevated (flying over the existing) one storey buildings with single rooms for students and studio apartments for young families of PhD candidates. The only new intervention on the ground is a public building divided into two parts. The covered one is a hall for reunions for both residents and students. The open-air part is used as a theater and a cinema or an ice skating ring in winter, where all the people of Tsinghua campus can meet together and exchange their experience.

GLASS KINDERGARTEN

44

45

The idea of a kindergarten, as well as of childhood, is usually connected to the idea of protection, which parents, teachers or architecture aims to give to a child, creating safe and closed environment. However, this project works mostly with another attribute of childhood - the curiosity and the will for discovery. To keep the scale of intervention comfortable for a child, the urban form of the project is a L shape, which together with existing school building on the north creates an

46

open courtyard, protected and yet not too closed. The building and the garden is a labyrinth for discoveries. The main L shape building is based on the guiding wall, which meets you at the very entrance and through the whole building leads you to the garden. The entrance is situated next to the teaching rooms in order to provide safety of pupils. Then you arrive to the main indoor space with a patio, where children can play together during the break and have their lunch.

47

The next wing looking east has four classrooms, which can be connected one to another in order to create smaller or bigger study environment. The classrooms are strongly linked to the outside garden, both visually and physically since the sliding doors can be opened anytime. Once in the garden, child can explore the rich world of landscape, vegetation and gymnastic areas. The main treasure is a glass pavilion, partially hidden inside the hill.

48

This is the space for temporary activities and games. The load bearing structure is made of structural glass that allows a constant connection with landscape: around, above and below. Even the floor is transparent that permits children to explore the underground world. The pavilion is a place belonging to imagination, creativity and natural studies, which altogether with the main teaching building and the garden provides rich choice of activities for a child.

HABITED WINDOW

52

53

The project is a homage to Gio Ponti. It is inspired by his Furnished Window (Finestra Arredata) designed for a house in via Dezza 49 in Milan. Gio Ponti treats the window the same way he does with the wall. Ponti’s window is no more a hole but a functional surface where he puts shells, books and paintings. Habited Window is a will to go further transforming the window into

54

a habited space, a public bench with a frame, which embraces the view over Solari park. The project won the competition inside Design Studio and was supposed to be constructed next to Gio Ponti’s building in via Dezza, facing the park…however, we did not get the permission from City Council and ended up construction the Window at Politecnico di Milano.

THE VOID

58

59

This thesis research explores the meaning of term VOID in architecture. According to the studies made it can be defined as delimited portion of space where objects and events take place. It is the place of possibility and the place of happening.

The thesis defines the limit and the object. The limit consists from six planes deriving from Cartesian system. The first one is a horizon line of Earth surface, while the other five are erected borders. Limit creates the internal space, which tends to possess. The border has its scale, proportion and distance. Thanks to these characteristics, human perceive the limit and enter in a dialog with it. One of important examples of an architecture-limit is Great cloister in Certosa di Pavia. Then what is the object? Ii can be defined as a self-sufficient closed entity that cannot be decomposed. What is the relation it installs with the space? Object could be an abstract reality as the ones we see in avant-garde art of

60

Kazimir Malevic or as Point of Vasilij Kandinsky. It becomes concrete in works of architects as architecture deal with reality. One of them is Ivan Leonidov and his project for Lenin Institute. The negotiation of limit. This object is the origin of space and even time.

Therefore, the limit and the object shall be considered as two opposites. One has internal field of reaction (architectural space) while the other creates the connection with external space. The void inside the limit is the hierarchy (piazza, Mediterranean house or Certosa di Pavia) while the void of the object is an infinite universe around. What happens if we put these two elements, two architectural spaces and two opposite natures together? We could call it scaled universe(al) model: object is still the one tending to possess the infinite while the limit makes this infinite concrete and perceived by human. As Kandinsky said: “The moment of fusion between point and surface is the moment of fecundation.
