Welcome T

he Party Season is in full swing and it doesn’t stop with Christmas because there are loads of reasons to party on into the New Year and beyond…Burns Night, Chinese New Year, St Valentine’s Day. So if you love to celebrate and want some ideas take a look at our What’s On pages, speak to one of the Concierge Team on 01344 644 523 or visit our website at www.countyconcierge.co.uk This issue is packed with ideas for revamping yourself, your home, your garden or your lifestyle. We have been speaking to some truly inspirational colleagues in the concierge world and have found one that we would like to introduce to you. The Dog Concierge, aka Harriet Collins, is based in Ascot and has been thoroughly vetted by my two border terriers Holly and Archie… who adore her. Check Harriet out on page 21. We all hope it won’t happen to us, or our loved ones, but if it does it is great to know that help is at hand. Sadly we have become aware that for under 18s this is not always so and were delighted to be able to join local children’s cancer charity Christopher’s Smile at their annual Wentworth Ball and help to raise over £40,000 to fund research. Find out how you could help with their work on page 34. Bespoke is best and during 2013 CC Magazine has featured some of our local entrepreneurs, and this issue continues the theme from Caroline Groves’ amazing bespoke shoes and Ellie Barnes smart Fitness regime to bespoke gardens. We love the stunning tree houses designed and built by Paul Cameron, whose clients include celebrities such as Elton John and Gary Barlow. For kids of all ages Paul’s very special treehouses provide the perfect fantasy world, and what better way to enhance your garden once our landscape guru Fiona Harrison has created a fitting backdrop. This is the ideal time to be planning ahead while everything is dormant so take a look at the ideas from Paul and Fiona in this issue and give your garden a facelift for 2014. For the rest it’s all about living in Surrey and Berkshire. County Concierge is on hand to assist with everything for home, for work or for leisure. If you need help or advice our network of specialists and professionals are just a call or a click away. A very happy and healthy New Year for all our readers.

The dichotomies of dressing in winter

I

ith over 25 years of traditional shoemaking experience Caroline Groves launched her eponymous couture shoe label 10 years ago. A deep knowledge of her craft is at the core of Caroline’s distinctive shoes and her designs celebrate fashion and art. Each pair of shoes is unique to the client who commissions them and Caroline has built up an international following with private clients from around the world. This Christmas Caroline has launched a gift certificate. Inspired by Victorian keepsakes the design of the certificate is an elegantly crafted stiff black envelope with embroidered toile in which an embossed invitation card promises the bearer the ‘gift of a pair of couture shoes made for you by hand by Caroline Groves’. From £2,500 the gift certificate will give the recipient an unparalleled service. It includes three one-on-one fittings with Caroline for a classic design. The result will be a bespoke shoe made entirely by hand around a last that is made specifically for their foot’s shape. The perfect present: stylish, comfortable and unique to them. The attention to detail, the care, thought and craftsmanship imbued in every pair of Caroline Groves’ shoes is clear to see

love dressing for winter, especially after a summer when my skin is fully charged with vitamin D anticipating the season to come. The act of arming myself against the elements with cashmere against my cheeks, fur lined boots encasing my hibernating tootsies, and tights protecting me against those mischievous chilly blasts of artic air are all blissfully reassuring. When it comes to clothing, winter can be a confusing season. We bolster ourselves against the unpredictability of the British weather by stocking up on thermals, while at the same time embracing the wonders of the party season, entertaining the flimsiest of confections which will, in turn, be expected to cope with snow, wind and rain, albeit for short bursts. A coat for every eventuality is required. To my mind, most Brits have inadequate outerwear to deal with the vagaries of our ever-changing weather. Many believe a practical weatherproof coat, be it Berghaus or Barbour, will cover all their needs as they ‘do the job’. Of course they will, but only ever in a practical, functional way. Winter, however, calls for more options. It is a long season if you have only the purely functional to choose from. The essential for me is the glamorous wool or cashmere item that offers all the warmth you could need, but with a sumptuous air. I adore the cocoon styles that are so prevalent this season, harking back to the minimalist trends of the 90’s. The masculine edge and roomy design allow the wearer to layer-up, offering the opportunity to wrap themselves luxuriantly amongst the folds. The tsunami of pink coats this season from m&s to Maxmara offer wonderful relief from the obligatory black. But beware if you are making a long-term investment. These colours go out of fashion and, unless you really

are a pink lady, you should invest in a more enduring colour. Camel, caramel and silver grey are perfect, exuding wonderful continental chicness. If you seek a more relaxed item, try the posh parka. Reminiscent of army surplus, without the raw, utilitarian practicality, this style gains popularity again. It is a coat for those wanting to hold on to the teenage rebel inside, the rebel who may well have worn one on a Lambretta in the 60’s, or with their Doc Martens in the 80’s. Perfect for afternoon walks followed by lunch in a cosy pub, these can be found all across the high street. But what about the other essential item for the winter season, the party dress? Full length, knee length, just covering your modesty length – what do you require? I always advise finding a versatile cocktail dress. Cut to the knee, simply designed, using interesting fabrics and a flirty cut, adaptable to work for different occasions – a must for those who don’t feel the need for lots of party frocks. Lace is very prevalent this season and the perfect opportunity to add texture to a simple design. The appetite for full-length dresses has grown hugely as we embrace long dresses as daywear. It seems no wardrobe is complete without a maxi dress, and here is your opportunity to add one if you don’t already own your quota. I love this wonderful black and gold Temperley dress. The sheer sleeve offers a hint of demure modesty and security to those not wanting to feel like they’re baring too much flesh. Whatever your plans for the weeks ahead, enjoy a little glamour every day. The chilly months will be so easily weathered if you do.

The Spa at Pennyhill Park Hotel

T

he Spa at Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot has just completed an extensive interior refurbishment following the development of the outdoor area last year, which saw the introduction of a pool bar and outdoor menu, decking, parasols and luxury loungers. Inside, The Spa has a new warm colour scheme throughout as well as beautiful new soft furnishings and feature mirrors introduced – the entrance to The Spa in particular is now a sight to behold. The Spa offers its own product range, which is handmade by a team aromatherapists based in Dorset. Spa Therapy Manager Kirsty Amato says, ‘We are especially proud that our natural and organic skincare range does not contain parabens, synthetic perfumes, mineral oils, lanolin or synthetic colours. The range includes an array of wonderful aromas including jasmine and frankincense, vanilla and bergamot as well as our reviving signature blend of rosemary and citrus to uplift and refresh your skin. Many of the key ingredients for our products are sourced from small organic suppliers including bees wax and honey from our very own bee hives placed around the hotel grounds.’

A recent addition to the treatments at The Spa is a range of ‘Leighton Denny Expert Nails’ manicures and pedicures for both women and men. Multi award-winning nail technician Leighton Denny founded the brand in 2005 when he opened a single nail salon in London’s Marylebone. Leighton’s expertise, experience and passion for nails has seen Leighton Denny Expert Nails evolve to become one of the world’s leading professional nail care and colour brands. The therapists are all fully trained in these new treatments - the awardwinning ‘Immaculate Manicure’ for example, includes a ‘Diamond Dust’ exfoliation with a rich ‘Best Defence’ cream massaged into your hands and arms. This is a deeply nourishing treat – your nails are shaped, cuticles soaked and tidied and finished with an application of Leighton Denny high performance nail colour.

get set to turn those

eugenia olavide

fitness resolutions into reality...

The art of breaking the stress cycle

with ellie barnes

N

ew year, new you — at least that’s the theory! Getting fit and then staying fit can be a challenge, but this year help is at hand. Great Britain Triathlete Ellie Barnes, of Barnes Fitness, shares her five top training tips for 2014... It doesn’t matter whether you’re a complete exercise newbie or a seasoned athlete, you need a plan to get from where you are today to where you want to be – from the start line to the finish line.

More familiar in a business context, the s m art system works equally well when it comes to health and fitness: S = s p e c i f i c M = m e a s u r a b l e A = a t t a i n a b l e R = r e a l i s t i c T = t i m e - b o u n d

You need to be specific about what you want to achieve. Saying ‘I’d like to run five miles’ isn’t going to get you anywhere. Saying ‘I will finish the Fairoaks Five mile run in April in under 35 minutes’ is not just specific, it’s also measurable, realistic and it’s time-bound. So start by taking the s ma rt route and then follow my top training tips to turn those resolutions into results to be proud of.

1 S E T O N E G OA L AT A T I M E Stick with that five-mile race as your target – don’t start adding other races or distances. Now break down into attainable chunks how you’re going to achieve your goal – talking to a running coach or personal trainer is an excellent first port of call, and some, like Barnes Fitness, offer free initial consultation phone calls. 2 JOIN A CLUB ...or other fitness-based social group.Taking part in any activity with other people is much more effective than going it alone. You can support each other, you’ll learn from each other, and and you’ll be able to measure your progress against each other. Barnes Fitness has a friendly Running Club (20–25 people) open to all abilities on Tuesday evenings, 6.30pm at Palmer Park in Reading. 3 W H AT Y O U E AT ...is half the battle. Your body is an engine, and if you put quality fresh fuel in, you’ll get quality results faster and more consistently than if you eat processed food stuffed with preservatives. At Barnes Fitness, our motto is: ‘Eat food from the ground rather than from a factory.’ 4 L I S T E N T O Y O U R B O DY If you get a niggle that lasts for more than 24 hours, do get it checked. It’s far better to pay for a few quick treatments than end up facing expensive physiotherapy bills or even surgery because you ignored the early warning signs. 5 E N J OY W H AT Y O U D O . . . and never lose sight of why you are doing it. Exercise shouldn’t be a chore – it should be a way of life that improves your health, mental wellbeing and social life! The Barnes Fitness team enjoy running or swimming before work because it sets us up for the day with a huge smile and internal glow! Find out more about Barnes Fitness at www.barnesfitness.co.uk or call Ellie on 07872 805 883.

A

s a coach my passion is to help people like you live lighter lives by clearing the clutter not only inside of you but also in the environments in which you live. We all hold emotions and experiences from the past, old beliefs and material possessions that are outdated no longer serve us. By releasing them we reduce stress and anxiety, enjoying a more purposeful and healthier life. The art of breaking the stress cycle, to me, resides in seeing ourselves as more than just a physical body. By caring and nurturing our psychological, emotional, social and spiritual selves we will achieve the balance required for a stress free life. We all know the devastating effects of stress in our lives, with its numerous connections to emotional and physical disorders, and my intention is not to go there but to highlight that we can all make changes, starting with small ones, towards a better life. Some stress is needed and I don’t believe a life without it is the right choice. The ‘fight or flight’ reaction has a purpose in our lives; it is natural and protects us from danger, preparing us to respond to a threat. The problem arises when we live in constant stress as we have simply not been designed to cope with it and therefore we get sick. So I want to share some simple steps to start reducing stress in your life:

Watch your eating habits and aim for healthier, lighter foods. Drink plenty of water   Meditate every day in the morning for 10 minutes. Sit quietly with your eyes closed and connect with yourself, reviewing what is truly important to you   Make sure the environment you spend most of the time, time in your home or at work, feels pleasant and comfortable   Spend time in the fresh air and go for walks regularly   Spend time with children   Laugh more Winter is at its best in the northern hemisphere where I am right now, and I cannot ignore how living in harmony with it – by introducing seasonal foods, revisiting my exercise and sleeping patterns as well as being clear and focus on what is important to me – helps me to vibrate congruently hence living happily and in greater health. Live the Dream sara h g i b s o n

W

armth and water is the basis for life and throughout history, people have enjoyed the benefits of bathing in heat and steam – indeed, it was traditional for the wealthy to travel afar to find thermal waters and natural springs but until relatively recently we have rarely considered that such treats could actually be brought into our own homes. Deep in the heart of the Home Counties lies an unexpected jewel. Dröm uk, specialist in the design, supply and installation of some of the country’s most beautiful luxury bespoke saunas, steam rooms and wet rooms, recently unveiled their stunning new Showroom in Byfleet, Surrey. Inside you will find yourself surrounded by rich vibrant colours and a variety of textures designed to inspire and excite. Dröm uk take their inspiration from the world around them, from the sumptuousness of a Moroccan Souk to the fresh clean landscape of the Scandinavian fjords. Dröm uk’s talented team of designers display their creativity and imagination with superior designs, luxurious finishes and the use of the latest technology producing unusual, unique rooms which show off the quality, splendour and unashamed glamour of all types of wellbeing rooms and spaces for your home. The 21 roomsets and wellness areas show how the products can be adapted to traditional or contemporary environments, and custom made to fit the space available. Saunas are no longer just ‘wooden boxes’ and the exterior can be as modern or traditional as the rest of your home. The interior will usually be in timber, although a feature wall in stone or marble could

be incorporated. Frameless glass doors are extremely popular now giving a great feeling of space, while tiled exteriors complement the tiling in the rest of your bathroom or pool area. Steam rooms can be as minimalistic or as ornate as you wish. The walls and benches can be covered with a wide variety of finishes comprising different tile types and textures in a palette of colours, corian, marble, glass mosaics or stone. Again, the use of glass, including frameless glass doors, creates a unique feeling of space and openness. Twinkling or colour changing lights and different fragrances enhance and complete the bathing experience. Kicki Carlsson-Boyd, Managing Director of Dröm uk, was born and raised in Sweden and learned from an early age the numerous health and wellbeing benefits of sauna and steam bathing. Discovering that these products were only available in expensive spas and hotels on her arrival in the uk, she founded Dröm uk with Barry Smith to enable others to realise the energy of positive wellbeing. Dröm uk offers honest and expert advice every step of the way with a wealth of experience derived from successful installations of the most innovative and technical designs. Dröm maintain the highest level of customer satisfaction by providing consultation and co-ordination at all levels from domestic customers to architects and builders and provide a full aftercare service and maintenance package to keep the dream alive for years to come.

The Showroom is open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm and by appointment at the weekends. Dröm uk Ltd t e l e p h o n e 01932 355655

The pleasure of leisure...

T

here is no doubt that the more leisure facilities, toys and gadgets a house can offer the wider its market will be. The world is moving on at such a pace and so is the demand for leisure facilities within a house. As people’s time becomes more and more precious the desire to relax in a steam room, do a few lengths in your indoor pool or watch a movie in your cinema becomes not a desire but a ‘must have’. Knight Frank is blessed with dealing with some of the finest houses in the land and consequently they attract some of the wealthiest buyers. The international buyers do now make up the majority our market and they are used to real quality and 6 star hotels and that is why the demand for brand new homes has increased dramatically as this is the only way one can produce and incorporate these facilities

to satisfy their needs. Only the best of the best will do and consequently the bar keeps being raised and developers have to do likewise to compete with their rivals and stay ahead of the game. I see no reason why this trend will not continue. What will someone come up with next? We have dealt with properties which have indoor pools, cinemas, saunas, steam rooms, bars, wet rooms, gymnasiums, spas, therapy rooms, party rooms and games rooms. We have even sold a house with its very own squash court and just when you think you have seen it all we deal with a house which has its very own bowling alley! We really have! Just when we think the bar cannot be raised any higher something spectacular is created to marvel at… I wonder what will be next!

ituated in a prime location in the heart of Virginia Water, Casa Nova has become a favourite with discerning Italian foodies over the last eight years… and especially the County Concierge team… we all love Casa Nova for our special lunches, dinners and meetings with clients. Jose Fernandez and his team at Casa Nova are passionate about great food and wine, served in a modern, warm and inviting environment. A traditional Italian restaurant in the heart of the Surrey countryside, it offers freshly prepared dishes with only the best seasonal ingredients. The a la carte menu is extensive and there are also daily specials on offer, which give an everchanging choice to Casa Nova’s loyal customers. Of course, if you have a special request just ask, we have never managed to phase them yet, including a request to serve zabaglione for a client who had never tried it before… she is now hooked! Starters could include the soup of the day; warm pear and Parma ham salad served with goat’s cheese dressing; egg Florentine; prawns, Marie Rose salad and mixed leaf dressing; or melons and fruits served with a strawberry dressing. On a personal note the Sunday roast beef ranks among the best in the area and with all the trimmings it is a firm family favourite and is always on offer for Sunday lunch. For those of you who are passionate about fish, Casa Nova serves the freshest dishes – hake, lobster, monkfish, salmon, scampi and scallops to name but a few. Menus are seasonal, so you will always find new dishes when you return. Follow with dolci del giorno, the sweets of the day, and your visit to Casa Nova should be fulfilled. One of my favourites is the pineapple carpaccio – highly recommended. Bookings are now being taken for Pre Christmas lunch and dinner, which is available from Monday to Friday. As always a superb lunchtime menu is also available for Christmas Day and Boxing Day but spaces are limited and always sell quickly so book early to avoid disappointment. Whether you’re looking for a light refreshing bite, a cosy meal for two or a treat for family and friends, Casa Nova never disappoints. Buon appetito!

The proof’s in the pudding... So the turkey’s half eaten carcass sits on the Christmas platter like the spent phoenix that rose from the ashes and you feel replete after a good ol’ festive feast. There’s just the pudding left. I’m one of those that the average stodgy fruit pud doesn’t sit well with, quite literally, so here is a wonderfully refreshing alternative to the dark mass that can be the ruin of a great meal Ingredients   180g caster sugar   8 egg yolks   1 litre double cream   200g Christmas pudding, crumbled Instructions   Put the sugar in a clean saucepan on a medium heat and leave alone until you have a soft caramel   Beat egg yolks until they have doubled in volume, gradually pour in the caramel in a thin stream, (here you can add a dribble of your favourite liquor to taste) mix and cool   Mix half the whipped cream into the crumbled pudding, the other half into the egg mixture, then fold both together   Pour into individual ramekins, and freeze for 24 hours   To serve, run warm water over the ramekin allowing the ice cream to drop out

Dog Concierge

W

hen I first heard the name Dog Concierge my mind conjured up the image of a little dog on the phone asking for directions to the nearest pet shop, and in many ways this is how Harriet Collins, Dog Concierge founder, sees her clients too. To her they have specific needs for companionship, care and services just as we do, and this is exactly what the Dog Concierge provides for them. Having ‘met’ Harriet on LinkedIn I was intrigued to meet Ascot-based Harriet in person The first thing I discovered is that she is a very determined young lady. Profoundly deaf from birth, Harriet has spent a lifetime challenging the barriers and perceptions that exist for people with hearing impairment. Aged just four years old she discovered a passion for swimming when the family were based in Canada and pursued this passion to become the first deaf swimmer to compete in national and international competitions, becoming a member of the gb Elite Swimming Squad and representing Britain in European Championships and Pan Pacific Games. Harriet retired from swimming in 2005 and spent some time exploring ways to combine her love of physical challenge with her enjoyment of outdoor life and a special affinity for working with animals, especially dogs. During this time she helped deliver her parent’s black Labrador of six beautiful puppies going on to raise and train them. It was then that she began to realise what she wanted to do. So she set out to gain qualifications and insurance from the National Association of Registered Pet Minders (narp) in order to realise her ambition to create the Dog Concierge. So what does the Dog Concierge do? It is quite simply a pet care service that provides owners with total peace of mind that their much loved pooches are getting five star care whenever it is needed. Harriet arranges pet sitting, walking, daily popins and taxi services for her clients’ pets. She also provides a walking and minding service for pet owners travelling with their dogs and

staying at some of the top local hotels, such as Pennyhill Park, Coworth Park and Cliveden. She does not currently offer home-boarding but this is a potential part of her future plans for the service. The process begins with a home visit for Harriet to meet the owners and their dogs. Harriet has an aura of calm competence about her, combined with a natural affinity for dogs, making her a very special person. But Harriet is also a very efficient business manager and has developed a simple registration process ensuring that clients know everything they need to about the service and that she knows all about her future charges. A natural entrepreneur Harriet has established the Dog Concierge from scratch. She has had valuable support and encouragement from narp and from the British Deaf Foundation but her most important support has come from her husband Spencer, who also has hearing problems. Spencer is something of an entrepreneur in his own right having established Elite & Exclusive, an international art consultancy, also based in Ascot. The other important ‘person’ in Harriet’s life is Oboe, her border collie (pictured here). Husband Spencer bought Oboe as a puppy for Harriet two years ago, partly because she missed her parents’ dogs so much and partly to train as her special guardian. Being deaf, even with a cochlear implant, means that important sounds like telephones or smoke alarms may not be heard… and Oboe is doing brilliantly as Harriet’s second pair of ears! dog concierge www.thedogconcierge.co.uk

Alexander James cl as s i c d e s i g n o n co m p to n way

R ‘My brief was to create an interior suitable for a family home and to appeal to a possible international buyer’

amillies is a magnificent five suite residence of almost 7000 ft/sq located in Compton Way, Moor Park, one of Farnham’s premier private roads. The semi rural setting plays host to some of Farnham’s most impressive homes. Interior design for this beautiful property was carried out by Alexander James Interiors. Designer Sarah Lea comments, ‘My brief was to create an interior suitable for a family home and to appeal to a possible international buyer.’ ‘The interior scheme is classic contemporary with a neutral palette throughout. The drawing room works particularly well as a focal point of the house and brings in a touch of colour with a central fireplace which draws you through into the kitchen. Another high impact area is the master suite with bedroom and sitting room. A dressing room leads off from here with an ensuite and through again to an enormous bathroom. Warm colours in the bedroom, rich wallpaper, tactile fabrics and dramatic crystal lighting by the bed give an opulent and international feel.’ Set within a mature plot approaching 1 acre, Ramillies epitomises architectural elegance. Approached via remotely controlled wrought iron gates, one’s first impression is of substance and style. A clever blend of traditional and contemporary design and an overall feeling of grandeur promises refined living of unmatched appeal.

Step into the grand, vaulted, double height reception hall of Ramillies and experience the first sense of palatial living that is evident throughout this impressive home. High ceilings, stunning staircase bright, natural light, superior levels of specification and craftsmanship are all immediately apparent, reflecting and confirming the property’s magnificent perfection. With its five superb bedroom suites, and the expansive and stunning master suite, Ramillies has been has been designed to provide the perfect environment to relax and unwind. Perfectly balancing sophisticated style with elegant practicality, the bespoke kitchen forms the social heart of this beautiful home. Comprehensively fitted with Miele appliances, every consideration has been given to making this labour saving space a pleasure to experience. The house boasts exceptional finishes throughout including substantial use of stone and walnut. Comprehensive entertainment and communication systems are an integral part of the property. Ramillies offers plenty of privacy and seclusion within landscaped grounds of mature trees and shrubs. The house has been designed to maximise the verdant setting with large terraces on two sides which overlook the lawns and trees beyond. There is also a tiled integral double garage. I N T E R E S T I N G FA C T S Tony Martin, one of the Directors of Lusso homes used to own and live in the house that stood on the site now occupied by Ramillies. any people are happy to decorate their own homes inspired by the wealth of ideas from magazines, the media and interior shops. When it comes to gardens, many face difficulties – where to start, there being no defining spaces, issues of privacy and no sense of order or functionality. On top of this, gardens need living plants but which to choose; there are so many different species and varieties! It is easy to ‘decorate’ a garden with pots, seating and plants that you hope will grow but often without the design input that vital connection between house and garden is missing. Perhaps there is no intimacy in the seating areas or a disconnect between sizes of borders, and lawn areas. Does something always seems missing no matter how many wonderful plants are introduced? A well designed garden works with the client’s lifestyle and budget, architecture and setting to create something that not only works functionally but is pleasing aesthetically and emotionally. This garden, set within the woodland of the Wentworth estate, was remodelled to suit the requirements of a young family with plenty of space for play and entertainment. Set on steeply sloping land the terracing allowed for levelled lawn areas and a series of summer flowering meadows. The swimming pool terrace was expanded for summer entertainment and planted with scented billowing masses of grasses, Roses, Salvia, Ceanothus and Verbena. Pleached Hornbeam trees help to shape and define the outdoor spaces giving that architectural connection to the house. The planting relaxes into a woodland meadow and stream planted with tree ferns and the prehistoric looking giant, Gunnera manicata. A tree house for children’s parties and peaceful relaxation is nestled amongst the Magnolia and Birch trees. This garden is one of many constructed over the last 15 years of my practice as a designer. I offer a complete design and build service from initial consultation to advice on after care and maintenance and indeed work for many clients solely in an advisory capacity to develop gardens to their full potential. Reassess your garden this winter – a perfect time to reconsider your garden and plan for a summer of outdoor living.

treehouse life...

a world away from everyday

At

Treehouse Life we believe that a tree house can, and should, be so much more than just a country cottage or a log cabin perched up in a tree. So in all of our designs we like to look beyond the traditional, the obvious or even the expected, and offer something that’s a little bit different. So what is it that makes us different? Firstly there’s our range of truly adventurous tree houses, luxurious resort inspired retreats and Tree Canopy Walkways – all of which reflect our strong design signature, our passion for makebelieve and imagination, and the very best that outdoors living can offer. Not only are all of our designs unique in the marketplace, they are also tailor-made to suit your individual requirements, wishes and budget. We pride ourselves on listening to everything that you, your company and even your children have to say and then bringing all of your ideas to life. Our designs focus on achieving that perfect balance between functionality and fun. In other words, we make sure that the livable indoor space is perfectly balanced with plenty of imaginative outdoor play-space. After all, where’s the fun in only having one way to climb up into your tree house, and then nothing to stimulate your mind when you’re up there? Using sometimes as many as 9 different deck levels with 6 elevations, and a range of play benefits such as climbing walls, scramble nets, rope bridges, log rope bridges,

hammock bridges, fireman poles, big chunky 4-sided rope ladders, picnic baskets on a pulley for tree house suppers, slides and zip wires, all of our tree houses offer the challenges and freedom of ‘circular’ play in a 3d treetop adventure world – we even offer magical solar lighting for those summer evening sleep-overs! At Treehouse Life it is also important to us that our designs complement and enhance the ‘architecture’ of the open space, working alongside and not encroaching on what nature has already provided. As we don’t need to use the trees for our designs, we are free to follow a tree, or group of trees and their branches to achieve the maximum effect. Our hexagonal tree houses for instance, have a unique system of spiraling decks that swirl and hug the tree house itself, creating a perfect partnership with the tree house, sun, branches and trees. All of the materials that we use are designed to complement the surroundings, and blend in seamlessly with the natural surroundings of your garden space. Our use of African thatch for example, made from sustainably sourced and managed African grass, offers a 100% waterproof, well insulated and maintenance free roofing solution, as well as lending a real air of authenticity and natural beauty to our tree houses, with other alternatives such as grass-roofs or Scandinavian sliver-birch shingles. We are an imaginative company with great ideas… a world away from everyday.

A DV E RT I S I N G F E AT U R E

WHE R E TH E RE ’S A W ILL, T HE R E’ S A WAY Leaving a will is becoming even more essential following changes in the rules about inheritance.

L

aws governing family inheritances are in a state of flux as legislators try to keep up with new trends. For all of us, it means we need to make sure we leave robust wills. Most of us appear to be leaving our legacies to the vagaries of inheritance legislation. According to the Law Commission, some two-thirds of people in Great Britain have not made a will. When someone dies without a valid will, his or her estate is divided in accordance with the intestacy rules. Under these regulations the estate is distributed mainly between spouses, civil partners, children, parents and siblings. But the application of these rules can result in considerable injustice in individual cases – leaving money to estranged husbands and wives, ignoring needy children and, in some cases, going to the Crown rather than friends and relatives. Many people, especially the young, will feel that their assets are so insignificant that they do not merit the effort of making a will. If someone dies without leaving a valid will in England and Wales, the first £250,000 of the estate goes to the spouse or civil partner. If there are children, then the spouse gets a ‘life interest’ in half the remainder, which means they receive the income on the assets, but cannot touch or control the capital. If there are no children the first £450,000 plus personal belongings & half of the residue

goes to your spouse whilst the other half goes to any surviving parents, other wise to your brothers and sisters, otherwise to their children. In England and Wales, the government published a draft Inheritance and Trustees’ Powers Bill in March, through which a spouse or civil partner would get their half of the remainder of the estate, after the first £250,000, to invest and spend as they wished, without the ‘life interest’ restriction. This could leave the survivor much better off, but again could diminish what is left over for children. Anyone who wants to take care of their individual family members, rather than leaving the division of their assets to the luck of the draw in a changing legal system, should, therefore, make sure they leave a will. But that will needs to be carefully drawn up, especially if there are previous marriages or other complications. For instance, another change that is planned south of the border is reform of the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act for the first time since it was introduced in 1975. Fay Copeland, head of the private client team at London-based solicitor, Wedlake Bell, explains that this law enables cohabitees of more than two years’ standing, and people who can claim that they were ‘financially maintained by the deceased’, to make claims on wills from which they have been excluded.

Will Review Service

The reform will make this type of claim ‘easier’, she says. In England and Wales, however, litigation – often from disenfranchised children – is ‘increasingly common’, according to Copeland. ‘I am seeing a huge increase in cases,’ she says. ‘As asset values have fallen (in the economic downturn), there is less to go around and people are inclined to fight to protect what they consider they are entitled to.’ A way to reduce the likelihood of litigation is to attach a ‘letter of wishes’, she says – especially if one child is to receive a larger inheritance than another. ‘Without such an explanation,’ she continues, ‘children will see this as their parent’s last word and will assume it means they were regarded or loved less’, and that will lead to upset and, possibly, to the law courts. Drawing up a robust will can take days of thought and discussion, but it could save years of pain and litigation. well-written Will* is essential to ensure that your wealth passes to your heirs in a protected and tax-efficient manner. Not only is it important to ensure that you take appropriate advice when you put a new Will in place, but it is also vital to review your Will on a regular basis.Your personal and financial circumstances will change over time and a Will that was satisfactory originally, may no longer be so today. St. James’s Place Wealth Management in conjunction with Speechly Bircham, a leading private client law firm, are now offering a no obligation Will review service for readers of County Concierge. The review will outline any potential shortcomings of your Will and Nadine Rodgers, Associate Partner of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, will be able to advise you on any missed tax planning and wealth protection opportunities in light of your particular circumstances. Who can benefit from our service? The minimum thresholds for our Will review service are: • For married couples - a combined estate in excess of £1 million. • For single, divorced or widowed individuals - an estate in excess of £750,000. These minimum thresholds are to benefit individuals who need this level of asset protection and inheritance tax planning. Christopher’s Smile co z ki d s g e t c a n c e r too

‘Our vision is for every child diagnosed with childhood cancer to not only survive, but to reach adulthood enjoying a good quality of life.’

C

hristopher’s Smile was set up in October 2008 by Karen and Kevin Capel after losing their son Christopher in June the same year to an aggressive brain tumour following 21 months of battle with the disease. He was 9 days away from his 6th birthday. The Capels feel strongly that the current cycle for children with cancer needs to be broken: Survival rates for many childhood cancers has not improved in decades and often children who survive their disease are left with a legacy of side effects from the treatments which they have to live and deal with for the rest of their lives. To date there are no specific treatments for children (chemotherapy was developed for adults and these cancers are different to childhood cancers). The charity supports uk based research centres where there is a paediatric focus to find new treatments. Each day in the uk alone four children are diagnosed with childhood cancer. Every day one child dies from cancer. The Capels feel they cannot do enough soon enough. Since setting up the charity more than £600,000 has been raised.
