COUNTY CONCIERGE EDITOR’S WELCOME
A
s always we have a brilliant range of things for you to see and do in and around the South East. The focus this quarter is on the home, family fun and eating out. I am sure you will find lots to do for Easter and beyond but don’t forget that County Concierge is so much more than a magazine. We have a great team just waiting to hear from you and to help you organise things at home, at work or at leisure. This time around I have also tried to live the dream of Magna Carta…equality, freedom and justice! The 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta is on 15th June 2015 and there is so much going on for all of us. The County Concierge team is helping to promote Runnymede’s Magna Carta Day on Saturday 15th June and is also managing the Magna Carta Celebration Ball on Thursday 18th June for Surrey Law Society…busy times. If Magna Carta is not your thing but Wellington and Waterloo are we recommend the Battle Prom at Highclere Castle on Saturday 1st August. As you probably know Highclere Castle is the setting for ITV’s Downton Abbey. This is a stunning venue and has so much going on each year for all the family, both in the house and in the surrounding parkland. I was lucky enough to catch up with Lady Fiona Carnarvon, chatelaine of Highclere, and get a unique insight into her life and work as the current Countess. I hope you enjoy our Spring offerings and look forward to hearing from you if we can help with information or practical assistance for your latest project or event. You can find full details about us at http://www.countyconcierge.co.uk or simply call +44 (0)1344 644 523 to speak to a member of our team. Best wishes

TOPGOLF A NEW WAY TO PLAY
W
hether you’re an avid golfer, or you’ve never held a club before – Topgolf is the place to be. Their state-of-the-art sports entertainment community exists to create the best times of your life. Topgolf is essentially a two-tier, 240-yard driving range, with 10 dartboard-like targets in the ground at various distances. Each ball you hit has a chip in it, which records which target you hit, and how close you were to the centre of that target. The closer you get to the flag, the more points you score. Your points are automatically displayed on a digital screen in your bay – similar to 10-pin bowling. As you’d expect, the story of Topgolf began on a driving range in 2000, where two brothers were practising their swing. As boredom took hold, the brothers began thinking of ways to liven up their range experience, where they could practise their game, know
exactly where their ball landed and have the best time of their lives – the idea for Topgolf was born. The brothers envisioned a new kind of golf experience that combined competition with entertainment. Players hit micro-chipped golf balls at targets on the outfield, instantly scoring points on accuracy and distance – ideal for practice, perfect for competition. Fast forward to 2015, and Topgolf has evolved to become a best-in-class entertainment facility, complete with dynamic event spaces and a food and drink menu that would put any sports bar to shame. With golf pros strolling the tee line offering tips on your game, Topgolf is flat-out fun at any age, skill level or time of year. With 15 sites globally, and 10 more under construction, Topgolf is constantly growing and developing. Their Surrey site, based in Addlestone, has recently undergone a £250,000 refurbishment of their outfield, with a further £250k refurbishment due in the next

Worried about losing your dog? Many owners are concerned their dog will run away, be lost, get into trouble or be stolen. Some owners are also apprehensive about having a microchip inserted so Dog Tracker Nano is a welcome non-invasive solution to the problem. LADY FIONA CARNARVON AND THE REAL DOWNTON ABBEY
L
ady Fiona Carnarvon’s life may seem like every girl’s fantasy. Born Fiona Aitken she married George Herbert (Geordie), 8th Earl of Carnarvon and the Queen’s godson, in 1999. Their home is the stunning country estate at Highclere Castle in West Berkshire. Readers may of course know it better as the home of Lord and Lady Grantham in ITV’s Downton Abbey. Highclere Castle, which boasts at least 50 bedrooms, was completed in 1855. This huge mansion was designed by the celebrated Victorian architect Sir Charles Barry who also designed the Palace of Westminster. The surrounding 1,000 acres or more of parkland, landscaped by Capability Brown, has been in the Carnarvon family since the 17th Century. Sounds like the perfect fairy-tale? Well it did not take long for Lady Fiona to dispel any fantasies. She brings a whole new meaning to the expression ‘working from home’. Be in no doubt her home is her work…never-ending, constantly challenging, but what is very clear from the outset is that she thrives on it. The chatelaine of Highclere is very far from a pampered lady of leisure. She has all the warmth, grace and charm that you might expect, and her sense of humour is never far from the surface, yet underneath I suspect there
lurks a very astute and determined businesswoman. I managed to catch up with Lady Carnarvon at the end of a busy week, when her usual round of responsibilities also included three book talks. So now I had to factor in yet another persona – Lady Carnarvon the authoress. I found myself wondering how on earth did she find time for all her tasks and duties and more importantly how did she find time for herself? Having admitted that her life was ‘completely mad’ Lady
Carnarvon talked about her daily and weekly routines. She praised her right-hand ladies Candice and Julia who ensure that she is in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing…mostly via a whiteboard in the office. There are meetings to be had with both house staff and estate staff to ensure that everything runs smoothly, especially the vast programme of renovation and refurbishment required. Since taking on her role as Geordie’s wife Lady Fiona has established an amazing programme of events at Highclere as well as opening the house for tours, events and weddings. There is a constant round of planning sessions for everything that goes on and this includes the challenges of letting the ITV team in to film Downton. Tennis with friends, yoga, walking with her dogs, and riding her horse around the estate all feature in Lady Carnarvon’s weekly time-out. Working with her husband as she does, family time is also very important and she talked about family holidays in Cornwall where happy memories of childhood return to blow away the stresses and pressures of daily life…paddling in the chilly sea, the old familiar walks in the brisk Cornish wind. The Carnarvon’s have

Our conversation then turned to Lady Carnarvon’s passion for writing. Fascinated by Highclere’s history, Lady Carnarvon has written four books. The first two are guide books about the Castle and Egyptology. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon discovered King Tutankhamun’s tomb with Howard Carter in 1922. Her first New York Times Bestseller was Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere. It is an amazing tale covering the same period as the first two series of Downton Abbey, beginning in 1894 with the marriage of 19-year-old Lady Almina into the Carnarvon family and continuing through the Great War. The second book is Lady Catherine and the Real Downton Abbey which takes the history through to the end of the Second World War. Currently Lady Carnarvon is working on some new ideas to promote Highclere through her writing. She is planning a pictorial book in which she hopes to share the glorious seasonal changes to the gardens and landscapes throughout the year. Another work in progress is a book about entertaining at Highclere through the ages,
including the menus served to guests such as Henry James, Benjamin Disraeli, the Prince of Wales and Sir Malcolm Sargent. If you haven’t had the chance to visit Lady Fiona’s wonderful home then do try and get there this year. There is so much to see and do, making it a perfect day out at any time of year. HEY, BIG SPENDER
AN EXTRACT FROM THE WEALTH REPORT 2015 COMPILED BY LEDBURY RESEARCH FOR KNIGHT FRANK LLP
T
he general outlook for luxury spending continues to be positive. Almost a third of respondents to The Wealth Report’s Attitudes Survey expect their wealthy clients to spend more on luxury goods in 2015, compared with just 8% who expect it to decline. But how does the short-to-medium-term outlook compare for individual countries, and where in the world might luxury brands look to expand? The new Big Spenders Index, compiled exclusively for The Wealth Report, provides some of the answers by identifying the locations likely to see strong growth in big-ticket spending by their own ultra-wealthy populations and visiting Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWIs). Topping the list for 2015 is a very well-established centre of wealth…the UK. China fills the second slot in our ranking table. The Chinese are already the single biggest consumers of luxury goods around the world, accounting for some 29% of the global luxury spend, according to consultants Bain & Altagamma. While overall sales performance of luxury goods in the Greater China region has been muted over the past year, there is no denying that there is still a strong demand for luxury brands, which isn’t going to change. India, one of the lower-profile BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) economies, is in fifth place in our rankings. Over the past year the rise in wealth and the number of wealthy has been impressive – the number of UHNWIs is increasing rapidly, according to our Wealth Model. Aligned to this wealth growth is an equally substantial increase in luxury consumption: the value of champagne imports rose 19% year on year, according to the most recent data from Le Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne, despite total exports being flat. We expect international luxury goods to be particular beneficiaries of this new wealth in India, rather than more traditional, local brands. For example, research by the Kotak Mahindra bank has shown that among the wealthy, the traditional Indian wedding gift is fast evolving away from silver plates towards top Western designer brands. Since January 2005 The Fancy Colour Diamond Price Index has increased by 167% in value which, interestingly, is almost exactly the same rise as the wider jewellery index that we use. Christie’s jewellery consultant Raymond Sancroft-Baker, who compiles the index on behalf of Art Market Research, says that demand for top-quality coloured gemstones is also very strong. Once again classic cars have been the strongest performer over both the long and short-term, with the value of the Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI) Top Index rising by an astounding 487% over the past 10 years and growing 16% in 2014.This actually represents something of a slowdown, following the index’s staggering 47% surge the year before. Reflecting on the regional make-up of the top countries, it is interesting to see Europe, Asia and the Middle East all well represented. Africa is noticeably absent this year, reflecting some weakening on the continent, notably in commodity fuelled wealth, which had propelled the success of a number of countries. MY BUSY KITCHEN
F
© Dan Jones
ollowing an article in the Sunday Times and a preview of some of the wonderful recipes in her new cookbook, My Busy Kitchen, we felt that Alex Hollywood was the perfect person to balance the male-dominated editorial of the past two magazines…and how right we were. Alex Hollywood makes it clear from word one that she is a cook, not a chef, and she is not a Great British Baker like her husband Paul. Alex’s inspiration comes from a lifetime of family cooking, from her great grandmother, grandmother and mother, plus her own eclectic style of simple fare gleaned from her travels in the UK and abroad. One key theme runs through everything she offers us in her book - cooking for family or friends is all about enjoyment… and her kitchen mantra? Keep it simple! A true working mum Alex knows only too well all the pressures that this entails. She makes no secret that she will opt for quick and easy meals from her fridge or store-cupboard so that she can sit down and eat with her family. This doesn’t mean sacrificing quality of food or taste, but it does mean that those all too fleeting moments of family togetherness can be enjoyed and treasured.

ALEX HOLLYWOOD TALKS TO COUNTY CONCIERGE
Whether it is slow-cook foods that can be left while you do other things, scrumptious roasts with all the trimmings, help-yourself tapas and meze or comforting cakes and puddings, Alex shares them all with us in her book. Although she grew up, and still lives, in a small village in Kent Alex has been able to draw on everyday recipes from around the world through her family. Her great grandmother was Norwegian and the Scandinavian heritage weaves its way through some of the more robust recipes from the Mediterranean, Africa and the Middle East. Alex talks fondly of her upbringing and her introduction to cooking from the moment she was able to stand on a stool and help her mother. Food for her is a celebration and she loves nothing more than preparing an array of delicious dishes for family and friends and then being able to join in the joy as everyone digs in. Throughout My Busy Kitchen Alex gives ideas and tips on how to
SPRING 2015 | COUNTY CONCIERGE | 25
minimise the work and maximise the enjoyment. Surely there can be nothing worse than going to dinner at a friend’s house only to find that the hosts spend most of the evening slaving away in the kitchen. Alex implores you to cook, sit, eat and enjoy! Having worked as a chalet girl in the French Alps for some time Alex is no stranger to making a meal for a group of hungry people in less than ideal conditions. Her recipe for Tartiflette comes from this time. Alex also talked about the pleasure of a raclette supper… just cheese, meat, salads and delicious bread…the preparation takes a little time but once done everyone can sit back and enjoy the fun of some ‘do-it-yourself ’ dining. Twitter has a great deal to answer for but it was thanks to her early tweets about what she was cooking for dinner that set Alex on the road to writing this book. She is still an avid tweeter with over 10,000 followers, so for some really great hints and suggestions we recommend you follow her too @Hollywood_wife
Alex confessed that she is a total technophobe. She has little time for the exacting science of the chef, preferring to follow instinct and taste rather than precise recipes. After just a short conversation with Alex you are caught up in her enthusiasm and energy. So much so that we defy you not to find your tummy rumbling and your taste buds crying out for more. My Busy Kitchen is the perfect cookbook for people who love to eat but find the thought of cooking a bit scary…let Alex take your hand and lead you through the delights of simple, delicious meals. You will be hooked! It seems that life is unlikely to get calm down in the coming year as Alex works on her next book, giving interviews and talks as well as TV appearances. Alex confided that she is actually enjoying the ride and is happy to live for the moment and just see where it takes her. My Busy Kitchen by Alex Hollywood, published by Hodder & Stoughton (£25)

LUXURIOUS CONTEMPORARY LIVING ALEXANDER JAMES INTERIORS
S
et in a secluded village location, yet just 30 miles from Central London, with architecture inspired by the luxurious Italian villas of Lake Como, Woodrow is the ultimate country mansion for luxurious contemporary living. Alexander James Interiors worked with developer Hencan Southern to design, style and accessorise the interior in order to create a turnkey home of a calibre fit for royalty. The brief to AJI was to create a design with depth, luxury, muted tones and texture. A palette of greys and dark wood was chosen, and when combined with beautiful wallpapers, luxurious fabrics

and bespoke pieces of furniture, the result is truly spectacular. Woodrow spans four floors and features eight ensuite bedrooms, a basement leisure complex with swimming pool and fitness centre, 14 seat cinema, and glass fronted wine cellar. There is also staff accommodation, a commercial kitchen and garaging for 6 cars. One of the hardest tasks for a designer working on a property of this scale is to make it warm and welcoming. AJI commented “The feel is elegant but also comfortable and inviting. A palatial property like this could easily end up feeling like a hotel, but this doesn’t, it is a truly wonderful home.”

MAGNA CARTA MATTERS!
A
800 YEARS
s you will surely have noticed from the plethora of media coverage, this year is a very special anniversary for Magna Carta. On 15th June 2015 it will be exactly 800 years since a reluctant King John was taken to Runnymede Meadow on the banks of the Thames. There twenty five of his Barons and Bishops forced him to agree to relinquish some of the powers of the crown and to place his seal on what is unquestionably one of the most important documents in our legal history. On that momentous day in June 1215 Magna Carta heralded a new dawn for liberty and justice. This version of Magna Carta was revised several times in the 13th Century and the 1297 version became part of English law. The rest…as they say…is history! There are already many formal and informal events going on up and down the country to mark this special date and details of many celebration is on Saturday 13th June with stalls in Egham High Street selling everything from plants and craft items to bric-a-brac plus a Food & Drink Festival. Family entertainments will run all day on 3 stages in the high street – singing, dancing, steel band, gymnastics, Punch & Judy, magicians and Morris men together with street entertainers who will be mingling with the crowds. The “Magna Carta Giants”
of these can be found at http://magnacarta800th.com/events but here in June, in Surrey, we have our own special event for all the family. Magna Carta Day is celebrated in June every year by the local residents and business communities in and around Runnymede. This annual event is organised by Egham Chamber of Commerce with the assistance of Egham Residents Association. This year’s will also be striding among us. These eight giant puppets were created by Ballyhoo Arts and local schools in 2014 and help depict the history of the human rights movement beginning with Magna Carta. In the evening there will be a free entry firework display on nearby Strodes College sports field with live music provided by Magna Carta School. Gates open at 7pm with fireworks planned for 9.45pm. There will be fairground rides and plenty of food and drink available throughout the event. County Concierge loves this event and we know you will too. There is something for everyone - young and old. Further details of this event are available from: Cynthia Reilly cr@kseakens.co.uk

AMPHIBIOUS RIB FROM EASYBOATS Unique Amphibious RIB Comes to the Market in Mallorca With motorised, retractable, steerable wheels, Sealegs amphibious RIBs change the game when it comes to launching and retrieving a boat. Thought to be the only one of its kind in Mallorca, this immaculate pre-loved 7.1 metre is now for sale with easyboats. Lorenzo Vila, Director of 25-yearestablished easyboats, says, “Research says that Sealegs owners use their boat, on average, up to ten times more than they originallythought. It’s not surprising. The clever land-water design offers great freedom with no more offshore anchoring, no more boat beaching and no wet feet. An obvious target audience is private individuals with seafront homes who can make it ashore without the vehicle/ trailer/ramp rigmarole, another is commercially -minded beachside bars and restaurants, such as Nikki Beach, who’d rather their VIPs didn’t get wet en-route. Sealegs also make great superyacht tenders. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge used a Sealegs during their 2014 New Zealand Royal Tour – If it’s good enough for royalty... I think she’ll be sold at first sea trial. Sealegs is a New-Zealandbased company which set up in 2003 to cater to both recreational and professional (coastguards, military) markets. Its recreational boats are designed for family fun and adventure and are ideally suited to young children, who are safer inside the boat during
launching and retrieving, and for older people who find it tough to manhandle boats onto trailers and ramps. Also, with launch taking just a few moments, boaters can seize small windows of opportunity of good weather to go for a blast across the water – and then drive back onshore for a glass of something at a beach club. In-water, the boat is driven and used as normal with a responsive hull delivering a smooth top speed of 74km/h. However, on approach to shore she makes conventional RIB (or indeed any other motorboat) owners go green with envy. Simply throttle back to idle, tilt up slightly, hit a button and deploy the three retractable ‘legs’. They’re down in about ten seconds and then the Sealegs can be driven ashore (up to 25-degree grades of sand, rocks, mud) at a more-than-satisfactory 7km/h. The front of the RIB lowers to an easy clamber-off level for disembarkation. It’s a shame Sealegs aren’t street legal... For Sale With easyboats – 7.1-Metre Sealegs RIB One owner since new (June 2013), this 7.1-metre RIB has just 60 hours on the clock. With seating capacity for eight adults (in and out of the water) she has plenty of underfloor and locker storage and a Yamaha 150hp engine. Price – 150,000 euros (tax paid) For further information on yacht charter, sales and management, contact easyboats on info@easyboats.com, telephone 00 34 607 608 870 or visit www.easyboats.com

SPRING & EATING OUTSIDE CLARISSA KERSHAW OF THE GREAT FOOD COMPANY “One of our favourite things to make is the Muffuletta. We’ve made variations on this Italian stuffed cob loaf many a time for picnics.”
Warmer weather is coming and eating outside….. And we love that we are in picnic season - a time when families and friends unfurl picnic blankets onto expanses of green grass. From their baskets, bags and backpacks, they reveal the goodies that they’ve cooked up in the kitchen. One of our favourite things to make is the Muffuletta. We’ve made variations on this Italian stuffed cob loaf many a time for picnics. The bit we like best, is it speaks to the lazy part of us that enjoys getting up late on weekends. You can do this dish ahead of time and all you have to do on a weekend morning is bake. No faffing about or cutting or dicing a salad (or god forbid, kneading or mixing). Enjoy the morning with breakfast and papers, pop the Muffuletta in the oven while getting dressed and then off to the lunchtime picnic you’ll go. The ingredient list is entirely personal. We like to include sun blush tomatoes, Milano salami, fresh buffalo mozzarella, prosciutto cotto or porchetta (which is ham made from belly pork
and rosemary) basil leaves and chopped olives on a layer of tapenade or pesto You can slice your cob in half and fill as in the picture but we prefer to cut a lid out, take out all the fluffy bread then layer up with all those scrummy delights. Lid back on and in the fridge overnight to infuse, a heavy weight on top helps. In the morning cook at 160C for 30minutes, and just pop it in your basket, wrapped in a clean tea towel. Buon Appetito “At the Great Food Company we put together some fabulous al fresco feasts to enjoy in the great outdoors. With salads to die for, hand raised pies, parmesan straws and other tasty treats, go to www.thegreatfoodcompany.co.uk/hungryformore” Contact all your foodie questions to Clarissa & Selby foodcrew@thegreatfoodcompany.co.uk 01183732311
