Höchste Eisenbahn Vor 100 Jahren ging sie in Betrieb: die Berninalinie, die höchstgelegene ganzjährig betriebene Bahnverbindung über die Alpen. Seit dem Jahre 2008 ist sie auch Teil des UNESCO Welterbes. 1910 wurde der direkte Zugbetrieb zwischen St. Moritz und Tirano aufgenommen. 61 Kilometer höchste Baukunst vor der Kulisse des höchsten Bündner Bergs, dem Piz Bernina.

The highest-altitude railway It all started a hundred years ago: the Bernina Line – the highest-altitude mountain railway with all-year operation. The line has also been a UNESCO World Heritage site since July 2008. Direct train operations between St. Moritz and Tirano started in 1910. These 61 kilometres of high-altitude engineering wizardry operate against the backdrop of Piz Bernina, the tallest peak in Graubünden.

In der Tat: die Fahrzeit der Pferdepost zwischen Samedan und Tirano betrug volle neun Stunden. Diese Tatsache, sowie der technische Fortschritt dank der Anwendung der elektrischen Traktionsenergie führten bald zur konkreten Verwirklichung der Berninalinie. So stand der Bau der Berninalinie in engem Zusammenhang mit dem Bau der Kraftwerke Brusio, welche in den Jahren 1904 bis 1907 im Valposchiavo erstellt wurden.

of Graubünden and Veltlin call out for a faster and more modern way of crossing the Bernina Pass.” reported the Schweiz. Bauzeitung, a Swiss construction-trade journal, in its 1912 edition. In fact, it then still took a horse-riding messenger a full nine hours to complete the journey between Samedan and Tirano. This fact, combined with the then newly-available technology of electric traction, soon led to the inception of what was to become the Bernina Line. The building of the Bernina Line is in fact inextricably linked, for this reason, to the construction, which took place between 1904 and 1907, of the Brusio hydroelectric power plant in Valposchiavo.

Die Schneeräumung Die Berninalinie war ursprünglich nicht für den Ganzjahresbetrieb konzipiert. Zu gross war die Furcht vor den winterlichen Naturgewalten auf dieser Hochgebirgsstrecke. Günstige Wetterverhältnisse im Winter 1909/10 erlaubten, die bereits erstellte Strecke St.Moritz— Ospizio Bernina trotz grossen Schneemengen offen zu halten. Durch diesen Versuch ermutigt, entschloss sich die Direktion nach beendigtem Bahnbau zur Anschaffung einer Schneeschleuder, welche im Winter 1910/11 erstmals zum Einsatz gelangte und eine erhebliche Einsparung an Schneeräumungskosten brachte. Die Dampfschneeschleuder «Xrot d 9213» wird übrigens bei sehr starken Schneefällen und für touristische Sonderfahrten heute noch eingesetzt. Dank dem Bau von verschiedenen Schutzbauten konnte die Berninalinie bereits 1913 erstmals ganzjährig befahren werden.

Snow-clearing The Bernina Line was not originally supposed to operate all year round, on account of the fear of winter avalanches along its high-altitude route. But the mildness of the winter of 1909/10 allowed the completed stretch of line between St. Moritz and Ospizio Bernina to stay open despite the large quantities of snow. Encouraged by this precedent, the railway’s board of directors decided to acquire a snowplough for use on the completed railway, and the machine in question was first used to clear snow – at considerably less cost than had until then been the case – in the winter of 1910/11. The steam snowplough denominated “Xrot d 9213” continues to be used to this day, both for snow-clearing operations and enthusiasts’ runs. Thanks to the construction of various protective structures, the Bernina Line started true all-year operations in 1913.

In effetti la carrozza postale a cavalli in servizio all'epoca impiegava nove ore per andare da Samedan a Tirano. L'inadeguatezza dei collegamenti esistenti, unita al vantaggio tecnologico della trazione elettrica, diede impulso alla realizzazione della linea del Bernina, che, non a caso, è legata a doppio filo alla centrale elettrica di Brusio, in Val Poschiavo, realizzata tra il 1904 e il 1907.

Lo sgombero della neve La linea del Bernina non era stata concepita, in origine, per funzionare tutto l'anno – troppo grande il rispetto delle sue temibili manifestazioni di forza durante la stagione invernale. Nell'inverno 1909/1910, tuttavia, condizioni climatiche particolarmente favorevoli permisero di tenere aperta, nonostante le abbondanti nevicate, la tratta St. Moritz — Ospizio Bernina. Visto il successo di questo primo, ardito tentativo, ultimati i lavori di costruzione della linea la direzione decise di dotarsi di uno spazzaneve, che entrò in servizio nell'inverno 1910/11 e consentì subito alla società di tagliare notevolmente sulle spese di sgombero neve. Lo spazzaneve a vapore «Xrot d 9213» viene utilizzato tutt'oggi in caso di forti nevicate – oltre che per la gioia dei turisti. Grazie all'aggiunta di speciali protezioni lungo la linea, inoltre, la tratta del Bernina funziona regolarmente tutto l'anno sin dal 1913.

Dank Weitsicht, Mut und einer gehörigen Portion Kreativität entstand vor hundert Jahren eine Bahnlinie, welche heute weltweit bewundert wird. Eine Bahnlinie, welche einerseits ein Bedürfnis für die Erschliessung der Region Valposchiavo und der Valtellina darstellte, andererseits durch ihre geniale Linienführung bereits den (Ferien-) Gast im Fokus hatte. Die Fachzeitschrift «Schweiz. Bauzeitung» aus dem Jahr 1912: «Zu diesen lokalen Verkehrsinteressen, denen die Berninabahn in hohem Masse zu dienen berufen ist, tritt der Fremden- und Tourismusverkehr». Unsere Vorfahren haben damit ein Fundament gelegt, auf welchem wir heute noch – oder heute erst recht – bauen dürfen. Die Bekanntheit der Berninalinie hat längst regionale, kantona-

le, schweizerische, ja sogar europäische Grenzen gesprengt. Weltweit wird die Berninalinie als «eine der schönsten Bahnen» anerkannt (National Geographic Magazine). Höhepunkt war die verdiente Auszeichnung 2008 als UNESCO Welterbe, zusammen mit der ebenso genialen Albulalinie. Und mit dem Bernina Express verbindet ein ebenso bekannter Zug die beiden Bahnstrecken und damit auch Kulturen, Sprachregionen und klimatische Zonen.

Japanische Schwester Seit 1979 besteht zwischen der Berninalinie der Rhätischen Bahn und der Hakone Tozan Railway (HTR) eine sogenannte Schwesterbeziehung. Erste Kontakte zwischen der HTR und der RhB gehen auf das Jahr 1912 zurück. Ingenieur Handa besuchte die Schweiz mit der Absicht, nach Lösungen für die Trassierung einer Bahn im topografisch schwierigen Gebiet Hakone – einer grossen und beliebten touristischen Region im Süden Tokyos – zu suchen. Das System der Adhäsionsbahn auf der Berninalinie überzeugte ihn. So wurde die Hakone-Linie nach demselben Prinzip der Berninabahn realisiert. Weitere freundschaftliche Kontakte führten schliesslich 1979 zur Gründung einer Schwesterbeziehung zwischen HTR und RhB. Als äussere Zeichen der Verbundenheit findet der Fahrgast auf der Berninalinie die Anschrift der Bahnhofnamen St.Moritz, Alp Grüm und Tirano in japanischer Schrift. Seit 1991 trägt das Triebfahrzeug ABe 4/4 Nr. 54 die Bezeichnung «Hakone» mit dem japanischen Nationalsymbol, der Sonne.

The culmination of this process was the well-earned awarding, in the year 2008, of United Nations recognition, along with the Albula Line, as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Bernina Express and its equally-famous counterparts from both railways now provide a valuable link between various cultural and linguistic regions, and even climatic zones.

A Japanese twin The Bernina Line of the Rhaetian Railway and the Hakone Tozan Railway (HTR) have been twinned since 1979. The first contact between the HTR and the RhB dates back to the year 1912, when a railway engineer named Handa visited Switzerland to find examples of working methods that could be applied to creating a line in the topographically difficult area of Hakone, a popular tourist region south of Tokyo. He was impressed by the adhesion system used to operate the Bernina Line, and the Hakone Line was duly constructed using the same principles as its Swiss counterpart. Further friendly contacts over the years culminated in 1979 in the founding of a twinning arrangement between the HTR and the RhB. Outward manifestations of this partnership include the station signs at St. Moritz, Alp Grüm and Tirano, which appear in both Roman and Japanese script. Since 1991, railcar ABe 4/4 no. 54 has also carried the name “Hakone”, accompanied by the Japanese national symbol of the rising sun.

Il National Geographic Magazine l'annovera tra le «ferrovie più suggestive al mondo» e la conferma definitiva (e meritata, ci permettiamo di aggiungere) del suo status tutto particolare è arrivata nel 2008 con l'inclusione nella lista dei Patrimoni mondiali UNESCO (onore condiviso con l'altrettanto spettacolare linea dell'Albula). Una tratta ferroviaria, quella del Bernina/Albula, che rappresenta un affascinante trait d'union tra culture, lingue e climi diversi.

La sorella giapponese Dal 1979 la linea del Bernina è «gemellata» con la Hakone Tozan Railway (HTR). I primi contatti tra le due società ferroviarie risalgono niente meno che al 1912, quando l'ingegnere giapponese Handa si recò in Svizzera in cerca di soluzioni utili al tracciamento di una linea ferroviaria nel distretto di Hakone, una vasta regione dalla topografia complessa – ma ad alta densità turistica – a sud di Tokyo. Il sistema ad adesione adottato per la linea del Bernina convinse l'ingegnere nipponico e, infatti, anche la Hakone Railway funziona secondo lo stesso principio. Da allora scambi e contatti tra i due enti ferroviari si sono susseguiti sino a culminare, nel 1979, con il gemellaggio tra HTR e FR; per questo i nomi delle stazioni di St. Moritz, Alp Grüm e Tirano sono scritti anche in giapponese e, dal 1991, sulla motrice ABe 4/4 Nr. 54 spiccano il nome «Hakone» e il sole, simbolo nazionale del Giappone.

Visitors travelling on festive days benefit from our “singles for returns” offer on the entire network of the Rhaetian Railway (except Bernina/Glacier Express trains). In other words, if you buy a single ticket to Tirano, Poschiavo/Brusio or Pontresina on a festive day, the return leg of the journey is completely free. The only condition is that your ticket must be stamped at the corresponding information desk (in Tirano, Poschiavo/Brusio or Pontresina).

Per i visitatori sarà possibile approfittare di andata e ritorno a metà prezzo su tutta la rete della Ferrovia retica (esclusi Bernina Express e Glacier Express). Sie rollen in den nostalgischen Triebwagen und in historischen Korbsesselwagen auf der UNESCO Welterbestrecke von St. Moritz nach Tirano. Sogar die umgebaute Rottenküche mit dem klingenden Namen «La Bucunada» ist mit von der Partie. Dort hatte einst die «Mamma» für die Baupioniere an der Bernina gekocht.

Take a journey back through time: on a special train of golden yellow-liveried carriages that took the world by storm in the nineteen-thirties. Entlang der mystischen Strecke durch die Gebirgsund Gletscherwelt ranken sich Anekdoten und Sagen – Ihre drei Zugbegleiter kennen die Geschichte hinter der Geschichte. Auf Alp Grüm – 2091 Meter über Meer – wird das Gletscherfondue serviert. Die Dämmerung setzt ein, der Vollmond geht auf am Bündner Firmament. Auf der Rückfahrt gehen dem Zug die Lichter aus. Das faszinierende Schauspiel von Licht und Schatten versetzt nicht nur Romantiker ins Träumen. Klassische Musik erklingt. Der Veltliner mundet doppelt.

Once you are settled into your seat with its grandstand view, we serve you an aperitif to help get you in the mood for the coming event. Our legendary railway line takes you through a magical world of imposing mountains and mighty glaciers, accompanied by the rich history of the region, as retold by our three expert guides. A special Swiss fondue is then served on Alp Grüm, at 2091 metres above sea level. You dine as twilight falls, and the full moon begins to light up the firmament over the canton Graubünden. On the return section of the run, the lights on the train are switched off, to allow you to enjoy to the full the fascinating and romantic plays of light and shadow outside. All to the strains of classical music. Your Veltlin wine tastes twice as good.

Mit Volldampf: Schneeschleuder Xrot 9213 Die Fahrt grenzt einem kleinen Weltwunder: Bis zu zehn Mitarbeiter kämpfen sich mit der Dampfschneeschleuder Xrot durch die meterhohen Schneemauern an der Berninalinie. Die RhB besitzt die weltweit einzige noch in Betrieb stehende Dampfschneeschleuder. Eine Fahrt mit diesem heissen Unikum – sie stammt aus dem Jahre 1910/11 – ist für jeden Bahnnostalgiker unvergesslich. Hautnah erleben Sie den Kampf gegen die Schneemassen mit. Natürlich ist Bahndienstleiter Stefano Crameri persönlich mit von der Partie. Er erklärt Ihnen die technischen Details – von Ölschmierungen bis zum Heizvorgang. Die Fahrt mit dem Schleuderzug führt von Morteratsch auf die Alp Grüm oder von Cavaglia nach Ospizio Bernina. Im Ristorante Albergo Alp Grüm warten Engadiner Spezialitäten: Mensch und Maschine haben sich eine Pause verdient.

Full steam ahead: Steam snowplough Xrot 9213 This trip includes a minor wonder of the world: It takes a crew of up to ten to pilot the steam-driven snowplough Xrot through the high walls of winter snow that fall on the Bernina Line. The RhB possesses the world’s only still-operational steam-powered snow plough, and a ride on this unique piece or railway history – which dates from 1910/11 – is a truly unforgettable experience for any vintage railway enthusiast. Experience from close-up mankind’s struggle with the snowy elements! Veteran railwayman Stefano Crameri is of course on hand to supervise the operation in person. It is he who explains all the technical details, from lubrication to firing-up procedures. The trip on a train drawn by steam snow-plough takes you from Morteratsch on Alp Grüm (or from Cavaglia) to Ospizio Bernina. Atemberaubend ist die Fahrt südwärts: Poschiavo – auch Borgo genannt – überrascht mit einem Dorfkern wie im Bilderbuch. Der Hauptort mit seinen stattlichen Patrizierhäusern lädt auf dem gemeinsamen Spaziergang zum Flanieren. Die Krönung ist ein Teller dampfender original Pizzoccheri; Wo schmecken die Buchweizennudeln besser als dort, wo sie herkommen. Alle schwärmen – von einem erlebnisreichen Tag.

The legendary mountain spirit “La Diavolezza” knew all about the beauty of the region, now you can luxuriate in relaxing bubbles as you gaze out over the region of Engadin. The spirit of adventure is also embraced by our discover tour that includes the highest point of the Rhaetian Railway – on Ospizio Bernina. The onward journey to the south is truly breathtaking: Poschiavo – also known as Borgo – surprises with its old town taken straight from a children's picture book. The main town, with its stately buildings, invites you to wander around at leisure. The high point of the visit is a steaming dish of genuine Pizzoccheri buckwheat noodles, which are at their very best in the place where they were invented.
