Page 1

Phonics Samples The first release of Spellzoo phonics resources consists of the digraphs: 'sh', 'ch', 'th', 'wh', 'ck', 'ng' and 'qu'. They are not age specific but are designed to provide extra phonic practice, and vocabulary extension, where needed. Vowel digraphs will be available shortly.

These samples show the range of resources available. Each sound used has two levels. Set 1 consists of words or one or two syllables, taken from the simple, or initial, code. Set 2 consists of polysyllabic words taken from the advanced, or complex, code. Dictionary definitions are included for all the words, but are dependent on the activity and answer keys are included. Alphabetical Order - reinforces reading the spelling list and encourages dictionary skills. Word shapes - encourages students to look at the shape of the words and shows where letters are placed on the line. Wordsearch - the student s recognition and recall of the words in the spelling list is improved. Familiarity of the spelling rule is increased and concentration is encouraged. Matching definitions - reinforces the student s comprehension and writing abilities. Multiple Choice - increases the student s understanding of the meaning of individual words. Improves vocabulary and encourages dictionary use. Decode the word - the student practices the spellings by matching letters to numbers. Magic Square - the student s comprehension and puzzle solving skills are strengthened. Crossword - allows the student to practice spelling by correctly identifying a word from a clue and writing it into the grid. Word Jumbles - gives the student practice in reading, recalling and writing the spelling words. Own Sentences - Students write their own sentences to show that they understand the word in context.
