The first thing you notice about
her is her ability to capture a room. Her beauty and strength as a model comes from her ability to emote through her eyes and the complete control of her face and body. The Hive was lucky enough to get a glimpse into the world of fashion in Chicago through the expressive and articulate eyes of Miranda Wright. Aspiring model and dedicated student with her head screwed on right, Miranda speaks with us about the pleasures and pits of modeling in Chicago, and how she relies on past decades and herself (no one else) to dictate her personal style and positive outlook on life.
Who else do you draw your inspiration from? Actually my favorite model is Karlie Kloss. She has a signature walk, and I have a signature walk. Everybody knows that’s Miranda when she’s coming down the street, you know, and that’s Karlie when she’s coming down the runway. She’s got that walk. I like her a lot because she has her own style. She has an awkward little body, but she makes it work for her.
Which jobs do you have the most fun with? Tell me a little bit about being an aspiring model in Chicago and why you chose to stay here while most ladies make the trek to Hair shows, because they’re fun and you get to NYC or LA. get your hair done and colored. I especially love, fashion shows - if I get picked – because I’m only Well one of the first reasons is financial. It costs a lot of money 5’7”- I love the attention, the lights, wearing the to pack up and leave. I do go to school here, that’s also why designer clothes that were created by hand. I’m here, I go to school at the International School of Design and Technology. I’m still trying to get the last two years of my Is modeling anything like ANTM or ‘The Face’ makes education in. So that’s why I’m staying in Chicago. The market it out to be? here is small, there aren’t as many jobs and I can see why a lot of models venture out and go where the money is. I would say, in my experience, yes. For instance, What about the city inspires you? What inspires me about the city is, you can walk down the street, you can wear your boots and shorts, you can wear your dresses and flip flops, you can dress how you want to dress without people looking at you crazy, you know, it’s kind of a free city. Having exposure to the fashion industry, what is your opinion on Chicago fashion and some of the strengths/weaknesses of working in the industry? One of the big strengths of Chicago fashion, in terms of the industry, is we do have a lot of trade shows going on. We have Style Max, so there are a lot of good trade shows…and unfortunately, one of the weaknesses is that not a lot of models know about them. So there is not as much diversity as you would like to see. So that’s a weakness, not a lot of diversity in terms of looks in the Chicago market. Speaking on diversity, what is your advice on overcoming this challenge in the industry, as a minority working within it? Well, you do have women you look up to like Joan Smalls, in the industry in terms of diversity, you know, still doing their thing. I just tell myself “if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.” If you love doing what you’re doing, it will never ever feel like it’s a job or it’s a chore. It’s something you have to do, when it’s something you feel passionate about.
we’re all competing for the same job, for the same thing. Basically you have to make sure that you really know yourself. Even if you’re just posing or walking, you have to practice every day. If you don’t practice, you loose it. Some girls out there think “I’m so talented, I don’t need to practice,” but you do have to! You have to stay in shape, keep your mind steady, be content with your looks, know that you don’t need to change and that nobody needs to change you, in order for you to look better. You have to be mentally and physically in shape. What influences your personal style? Are there any celebrities that you emulate your style after? That’s a hard question…I don’t really take influence from people. Instead of a modeling my style after a celebrity, I have a decade. I grew up in the 90s, I like 90s style. It was vintage cool and relaxed. The music was also different. I listen to the radio station 101.9. All they play is 90s music and it’s all positive music. It’s all really good music. That’s the decade I’d like to fit myself in. The music was all positive in the 90s! I can’t get with the music now a days. I find myself listeninjg to the music I grew up to. Feel good music.
