Fringe Theatre Adventures’ new

Q & A with
Describe your path to the Fringe. My path began with an elementary school teacher who came to me (after falling out of my desk to entertain my classmates) and led me by the hand to what I thought was the office...again, but instead she made a turn into the gym and walked me up on the stage. She then went out to the audience area and asked… Teacher: Do you know what this is? Me: A stage? Teacher: Do you know what happens on the stage? Me: Plays? Teacher: You know how you get in trouble in class for acting out? Me: Yeah. Teacher: Well, not only will you ‘not’ get in trouble for doing that here, they will actually applaud you for it and laugh too. Me: Really?!!! I won’t get in trouble?...At all? Teacher: Nope. An actor was born! What excites you most about theatre? That it’s live! You feel the audience, you connect to them and anything can happen. ANYTHING! I thrive on those moments when everything goes wrong. That’s when you really know you are in front of a LIVE audience. Why an Arts at the Barns season in addition to the Fringe Festival? The ‘spirit’ of the Fringe is in the opportunities it provides. It is in the found space… the use of a living room for rehearsals; ‘my dad sewed the costumes and my buddies are performing.’ Our series takes this to the next level. It adds state of the art infrastructure and professional experience in main stage theatre to assist in bringing the artistic voice to life. The goal is always the same: allowing
artists to create and stories to be told and audiences to receive it. Tragedy or comedy? I think that is like asking, “Hall or Oates” or “Bert or Ernie.” Red licorice or red wine? Red wine! What arts skills do you have? I love to direct, make music, sing and act. I can’t draw to save my life! If there was to be a play written about your life, what would its title be, and who would be cast as you? “Baby of Five!” Hugh Laurie What’s your favourite thing about Edmonton’s theatre community? Support. We help, we go to each other’s shows and we find room to put up all these shows in our blue collar town! What are your wishes for the future of the arts in Edmonton…say 10 years down the road? That they are still a part of the future! ARTS at THE BARNS 5

‘’ Calgary Sun
Winner of the 2010 Alberta Playwriting Competition, SIA is the fast and furious story of a former child soldier who takes a University of Alberta student hostage in a Liberian refugee camp in West Africa. The day Canadian volunteer Nick Summers is scheduled to fly home from Ghana, he wakes up hung over and chained to the floor. His new friend Abraham, a former child soldier from Liberia, has taken him hostage in a desperate bid to stop a war crimes trial at the International Criminal Court. If Abraham does not succeed, Nick will not survive. This is the story of how personal choices can have global consequences, and how we are linked, for better or for worse.
