Q & A with

Fringe Theatre Adventures’ new

Executive Director Jill Roszell stepped into the position of Executive Director of Fringe Theatre Adventures in July of 2012. Here are a few insights into Jill, her background and what makes her tick! Describe your path to the Fringe. I came to Edmonton in 2000 to take Arts and Cultural Management at MacEwan University as an after degree program. My intentions were to work in music since that was my background. A very astute producer named Heather Redfern picked me out of the Arts Management program and provided me with an internship opportunity to work at Catalyst Theatre in touring and promotions. I never looked back. Since then I have worked with many independent arts companies in Edmonton and just completed five years as the General Manager for Theatre Network. I discovered that I really enjoyed working in theatre and as an arts administrator, it was better to work in an area that was like your art (theatre) but actually not your art (music). What excites you most about theatre? Theatre can make me laugh and cry, where not many things in life can. Theatre has been our way of telling stories and connecting with each other through shared experiences for centuries.

What arts skills do you have? I am a professional musician; a classically trained flautist that has been studying and/or teaching music for almost thirty years. If there was to be a play written about your life, what would its title be? I’ll ask a local playwright. What’s your favourite thing about Edmonton’s theatre district in Old Strathcona? That it exists. Seriously we are blessed to have a vibrant theatre district in a vibrant part of the city.

Why an Arts at the Barns season in addition to the Fringe Festival?

What are your wishes for the future of the arts in Edmonton…say 10 years down the road?

The Fringe Festival is a wonderful celebration of theatre that lasts 11 days. The Arts at the Barns season is a celebration of theatre and the arts for the other 11 months of the year. And through Arts at the Barns we are able to partner with many of the amazing local theatre companies in Edmonton!

That it continues to be a prominent part of a vibrant Edmonton social scene. Edmonton has a strong arts community thanks in no small part to its loyal and supportive volunteers, donors and audiences. Together we make Edmonton one of the best places in the world to live.

Tragedy or comedy? A comedic tragedy – life has ups and downs Red licorice or red wine? Red wine

What is your “call to action” for people reading this profile? Thank you for coming to see theatre! Remember there are many wonderful arts activities and performances happening around this city and more to come at Arts at the Barns. Please join us again for another amazing experience. Sometimes we hope and pray that we will wake-up at any moment to find that we are only in a nightmare. Sometimes we do not wake up. The 2008 Governor General’s award-winning play (French Language) from the celebrated Québec dramatist, Jennifer Tremblay, is a moving and masterfully crafted tour-de-force. A woman invites us into her kitchen. Her neighbour is dead. She prides herself on never letting anything slip by, has overlooked an item on her list. A riveting tale of everyday to-do lists in which the essential and the ordinary are inextricably entwined. The List has become an instant classic which has been unanimously embraced by audiences and critics alike. Theatre Yes’s unique immersive production will transform the Westbury into an intimate 30-seat venue, which invites audiences into the heart of a waking dream. According to all accounts, Wednesday was

forecasted to be like any other day. But when Murielle awoke, it immediately seemed like it would be radically different. The floorboards creaked as Murielle stepped onto her porch. All marked “Return to Sender.” And what happened next, according to all accounts, Wednesday was now forecasted to be unlike any other day. And Murielle’s life would never be the same.
