ur Government recognizes the importance of arts and culture in strengthening our communities, our identity, and our economy. This is why we are proud to invest in activities like the 2011–2012 season of the Arden Theatre, which offers the city’s residents and visitors the best in the performing arts by established and emerging artists. The diverse array of shows lined up for this season—from theatre and dance to music, film, and beyond—is certain to enlighten and entertain audiences of all ages and backgrounds. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I congratulate everyone who has helped bring the 28th season of the Arden Theatre to life. Your efforts make an outstanding contribution to the region’s cultural landscape.
The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages s the Minister of Culture and Community Spirit, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the Arden Theatre’s 28th Season. The historical Forest of Arden was an area of England where the soil’s richness naturally supported towering oak trees. Here in St. Albert, the Arden Theatre offers incomparably rich ground for nourishing the arts, a joyful sense of community, and a celebratory quality of life. The Government of Alberta is pleased to help support the Arden Theatre through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. My thanks to the City of St. Albert, the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society and audience members from St. Albert and beyond for cultivating one of Alberta’s finest cultural treasures.

elcome to the Arden Theatre and our 28th performance season. I invite you to cultivate your passion for music, theatre, dance, and the visual arts. This season we are proud to present a vibrant and diverse range of talented artists from our own backyard and across the globe. International iconic figure Arlo Guthrie, and emerging Canadian artists like Colleen Brown who will celebrate her CD release with us, are among an outstanding line up of artists we will host this season. Through our Arden Originals you will enjoy uniquely created shows designed specifically for our theatre, and for our youngest patrons, The Family Series, promises exciting outings of joy and laughter. Thank you to the staff, Board, and dedicated volunteers of the Arden Theatre for your continued commitment to cultivating the arts in St. Albert. The Arden plays an integral role in our community hosting numerous school performances, dance competitions, and music festivals throughout the year. I thank you for being here today. We look forward to having the pleasure of welcoming you back to our newly renovated space, time and time again. Enjoy the show!

elcome to the 28th Arden Season and a fresh new series designed to delight the whole family. Kicking things off is American Michael Cooper, a master storyteller who uses masks to introduce a variety of marvellous characters with wonderful tales. We then go under the big top with Jamie Adkins, who is a whirling dervish of circus acts and feats. And finally Red Sky Performance takes us on a mystical journey to The Great Mountain with theatre, songs, and dance. I also invite all moms, dads, and grandparents with toddlers in tow to join award-winning musician Will Stroet for one of his mid-morning Noisy Theatre shows, where shushing is not allowed! Come gaze upon the stage my friends Where visions stir the soul Fabled faces spring to life And mysteries unfold... ichael Cooper has multiple personas, an enormous nose, and a great sense of humor – all of which make for an amazing afternoon of side-splitting, knee-slapping fun! A poet of the stage, Michael Cooper combines mythical and autobiographical stories of courage and wonder in his one-man extravaganza. Featuring eye-popping visuals that include breathtaking handcrafted masks, and outlandish stilt dancing ranging from the madcap to the sublime, audiences of all ages will be dazzled and inspired by this “moving sculpture performance. Whether producing a single paper, cloth or wooden mask, Cooper has elevated this most ancient of theatre crafts to the level of a fine art; creating everything from a clumsy baby to a brave cowboy. In a world where dogs wear hats, wild stallions are tamed, giant noses sneeze, and fish use candy to bait children in a pond; anything is possible. Told in prose, poetry, and silent mime, the use of captivating stories is funny and thought provoking, yet always entertaining. Masked Marvels and Wondertales is indeed a celebration of life guaranteed to capture hearts and stimulate imaginations. sponsored by

aster Clown Jamie Adkins magically transforms a simple set of discarded props and everyday objects into thrilling and delightfully silly circus acts, leaving audiences wondering “How’d he do that?” Beginning his career at the ripe old age of thirteen, Jamie Adkins would delight passers-by as a street performer in San Francisco. Gaining popularity and fuelled with the desire to entertain on a grand scale Jamie joined the Pickle Family Circus where he honed his craft. It was then on to Montréal’s Cirque Éloize, where this eclectic juggler, balancing artist, and poet realized being a clown was his true ambition. With his numerous talents and years of experience, this multidisciplinary acrobat was soon an integral and feature member of Cirque Éloize. Distinguishing himself with his unique acrobatic style and ever evolving comedic clowning, Jamie has perfected his craft and stepped into the spotlight to create his first solo show titled TYPO. Having toured the world, Jamie continues to forge a path, seeking new ways to develop his artistry. In his newest creation Circus Incognitus, Jamie finds the magic hidden in just about anything. Whether precariously juggling on a slack wire or stilt walking with a ladder, Jamie takes the young and young at heart on an unforgettable adventure in pushing ideas to their limits.
