Choreography by Rosangela Silvestre Musical Composition by Jose Ricardo Sousa, Luiz Badaró and Mario Pallais Costume design: J. Cunha
The celebratory dance of Avanhia calls upon the sacred energies of the earth Orixá through rhythm, song and gesture, paying homage to Ossain, the Orixá of the leaves and herbal medicine and Obaluaiyê, god of health and sickness.
Identity/Identidade expresses the explosive and joyous quality of Rosangela Silvestre’s unique approach to contemporary dance, “Dance translates what I cannot say in words. Dance connects me with the universe. Dance connects me WITH YOU, COM VOCE!”
Bahia-Africa-Bahia:
A tribute to the kings of the drum, Exu Ijelú and Xango Choreography by Rosangela Silvestre Musical Composition by Rosangela Silvestre with Viver Brasil Musicians Pays tribute the Exû, Orixa of communication, guardian of the four corners of the world who is both serious and playful, the owner of the drum and the dance.
Orixás Choreography by Rosangela Silvestre Musical Composition by Jose Ricardo Sousa with Rosangela Silvestre Costume design: Rosangela Silvestre As the many waters receded, the elements descended the Great Chain of Life, forged by the god of iron, Ogum, so that Earth could rise to meet the sun. Thus the Orixás came to populate and guide the world. Viver Brasil offers the version of this ancient tale as recounted to us by the inimitable Dona Cici. The Waters subside: Iemanjá—the sea, mother of all the Orixás The Air: Oia-Iansã—the wind, ancestral connection The Elements arrive: Exú—the messenger; Ogum—iron and instructor of human labor; Oxumarê—the connection between the cosmic and earthly worlds; Oxossi—the hunter and provider; Xangó—diplomacy, a good party and a grand dancer; Oxalá—father of all Orixás, owner of peace and creation.
In Motion Choreography by Rosangela Silvestre Musical Composition by Jose Ricardo Sousa, Luiz Badaró and Mario Pallais Costume design: Maria de Loudes Silvestre dos Santos aka Mainha da Bahia Fuelled by choreographer Rosangela Silvestre, in collaboration with Viver Brasil members Laila Abdullah, Margit Edwards, and Shelby Williams-Gonzalez, In Motion draws from the diverse palette of Brazil’s movement and sound - includes Capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian martial art, Samba de Roda, West African dance and contemporary Brazilian dance.
Bahia! Rio: Celebrating Samba! – with Vania Amaral and Katia Moraes

Genticorum G
enticorum spouts good ol’ Acadian fiddle fire water with a side order of flaming guitar and smoking stomping feet. Known throughout the world as one of the most exuberant exponents of Quebecois musical culture, a concert with this trio lifts audiences to the ceiling with jubilant rhythms and joyous melodies. Firmly rooted in the soil of their native land, this charismatic group incorporates the dynamism of contemporary North American and European folk cultures while weaving precise and intricate fiddle work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion, with one plucky guitar. A night with Genticorum is a rambunctious musical feast.
“Their songs were delivered with a cheek and charm that bypassed the need for a French into English dictionary.” Rob Adams – Glasgow Herald
“A vigorous & exciting approach to Quebecois music.” – fROOTS

Daniel MacIvor D
aniel MacIvor, one of Canada’s most sought after and celebrated playwrights, has written nearly 20 plays. Many of which have been produced numerous times nationally and internationally, include See Bob Run, Wild Abandon, The Soldier Dreams, You Are Here, How It Works, His Greatness, and A Beautiful View. He has also created solo performances with long time collaborator Daniel Brooks. MacIvor has won several national awards including the Siminovitch Theatre Prize, two Chalmers New Play Awards, and a 2006 Governor General’s Award for Drama for his collection of five plays called I Still Love You. Born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, MacIvor is a graduate from the Dalhousie University Theatre Department and George Brown Theatre Department. In addition to playwriting, MacIvor is also a screenwriter and filmmaker and was Artistic Director of the international theatre touring company da da kamera from 1987-2007. As part of the On-Stage Series, Daniel will give the premiere reading of three monologues, collectively titled I, Animal: Monologue #1: Man in Scrubs; Monologue#2: Boy in Hoodie; Monologue#3: Woman in Prada In this collection we will meet the man, the boy, and the woman, and with them we will also meet a dog, a cat, and a beautiful horse. All of these people suddenly find themselves standing on the other side of a line, outside a world they had created for themselves, and must now question what exactly it means to be human. The presentation will be followed with an informal question and answer with the artist. Warning: Mature Language

Little Miss Higgins
with opening guest BRIAN McLEOD Retro blues will be center stage when the Arden With his intricate guitar work, presents Prairie songstress, Little Miss Higgins. When you walk through the doors you will be taken by the style of the strut and the beauty of her serenade, the feel of the guitar, the colour of her lipstick, and the wink in her eye. Little Miss Higgins casts a spell on any audience taking them to the back-roads of another time, settling them down while sprinkling them with gravel dust and a bit of sunset. Experience an evening of down home music brewed up in an old-time country kettle, and seasoned with jazz and a grating of folk. Whether it’s songs about passion or songs about panties, Higgins writes about real things in a rooted and poetic way. “She’s got a twenties or thirties sound thing goin’ on and a voice that’s smooth like a prohibition fog rolling in on a lake of honey surrounded by cotton ball trees... with Mint Juleps scattered around the beach, of course.” – Super Turbo Bunny

on a mission to spread “jubilation” across the nation. Whether it’s playing high-energy band shows at festivals or intimate acoustic performances they are committed to connecting with people through humour, authenticity, and a love of music and live performance.
