KIM STOCKWOOD I LOVE SANTA

A multi-award winning singer-songwriter who has been a part of the entertainment

world for nearly 20 years, Kim Stockwood’s remarkable talent, personality, and versatility has kept her as an integral part of the music industry, both as a solo artist and as part of the pop trio, Shaye. But whether Kim is working as a radio host, or television personality, it ultimately all comes back to the music and entertaining. The Arden is thrilled to have Kim Stockwood appear in the On Stage series to help celebrate Christmas. Her album, I Love Santa, is a collection of holiday standards and original music, including seasonal favourites Marshmallow World and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Interwoven with funny stories, warm memories, and her signature comedic style, Kim Stockwood easily spreads holiday cheer with all of her audiences.

“Ever since I first started singing in Newfoundland, I’ve wanted to do a record of all my favourite Christmas songs. And I’ve done it... from Dean Martin to Elvis to a couple of my own originals. I hope you like it.” Join us for a pre-show wine tasting at 7pm, courtesy of Lacombe Park Spirits & Liquid Harvest.

THE AMAZING

KRESKIN

With a showman’s flair, a comedian’s wit, and the capacities of a bona fide mentalist,

The Amazing Kreskin has dazzled and amazed audiences for over 60 years. His very name has become an integral part of pop culture throughout the world. Through the decades, audiences of all ages have been drawn to this legendary figure. How many other celebrities can boast their own TV series, their own board game, and their own theme song? He has been called by many the Nostradamus of the twentieth century. Through the years, Kreskin has received international recognition for extraordinary predictions often dealing with world affairs. Of note in Canada, one month before a national election, he predicted the re-election of Prime Minister Martin, and named the exact amount of seats he would carry. On the day after the election he reflected that the government could collapse in 14 months. He was off by only 5 days. His signature piece has Kreskin requesting that his cheque be hidden somewhere within the venue he is appearing. If he fails to find it, he will forfeit his fee. So who knows, you might be the lucky one leaving with an early Christmas present of cash!

THE HOT

CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO: COOL YULE There are Hot Clubs in Norway, Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, and probably every

country where the guitar is played thanks to the brilliant gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and violin master Stéphane Grappelli. The legacy of these two musicians is celebrated by this accomplished ensemble of musicians from San Francisco with both style and panache. The Hot Club of San Francisco is breathing new life into gypsy jazz with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions. The ensemble is led by Paul Mehling, dubbed the godfather of American gypsy jazz, and features two-time Grammy Award winner Evan Price, one of the most respected jazz violinists of his generation, supreme jazz floater Clint Baker and an incredible rhythm section featuring Isabelle Fontaine and Jeff Magidson. To hear the ensemble live is to be taken back to the small, smoky jazz clubs of the 1930s. Add in the magic of the holiday season to this crossroad of fierce originality and fond nostalgia, and this will certainly be one hip Christmas concert you won’t soon forget. From traditional favourites like The Christmas Song and Baby, It’s Cold Outside, to their reworking and jazzed-up take on Djingle Bells and Don Rodolfo (Jingle Bells and a wild chugging reworking of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer), Christmas has never sounded this hot. The Hot Club of San Francisco is represented by Baylin Artists, www.baylinartists.com.

EDMONTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA In a rare concert celebrating their 60 Anniversary year, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra th

steps out of their performance home, the Winspear Centre, and travels to St. Albert to share the richness and beauty of symphonic music with Arden guests. Under the direction of ESO Music Director Bill Eddins, the renowned Orchestra will be joined by Croation-born pianist Kemal Gekić, to perform outstanding works by Berlioz, Strauss, and Rossini. With his daring approach to tone and form, one of today’s most formidable pianists will also present Liszt’s revolutionary Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major.

In May 2012, the ESO will make its performance debut at New York’s legendary Carnegie Hall, the crowning achievement of their diamond jubilee season. Since their establishment in 1952, the ESO has emerged as one of Canada’s foremost orchestral ensembles and the Arden is thrilled to welcome the world-class group of musicians to our stage for a special matinee performance.

PROGRAM: Berlioz – Marche Troyenne Rossini – William Tell Overture (arranged for solo piano by Liszt) Liszt – Fantasia on Beethoven’s The Ruins of Athens Liszt – Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major Richard Strauss – Death and Transfiguration, Opus 24

EVE EGOYAN PERFORMING

ANN SOUTHAM’S SIMPLE LINES OF ENQUIRY

Eve Egoyan is the type of artist that a composer dreams about. She has an amazing

ability to interpret music and make every sound and gesture feel like it is integral to the piece itself. Interpreting new works since 1994, Eve has performed the world premiere and North American premieres of many works by Canadian and international composers. She has appeared as a solo recitalist in Canada, England, France, Germany, Portugal, Japan, and the USA. “Egoyan’s take on new works is stunning...her clear, uncompromising taste was much in evidence in the choice of repertoire...Egoyan’s remarkable playing balanced that delicacy with intense focus, holding all in a net...the spaces in between the notes were still charged with presence...I even found myself confusing sound with touch...so convincingly had Egoyan re-stitched our reference points.” – Globe and Mail

Eve has released seven critically acclaimed solo discs, six of works by living composers, and one disc of works by Erik Satie. Her most recent disc, Simple Lines of Enquiry, is a one-hour long piano solo composed by Ann Southam and written specifically for Eve. In 2009, it was selected as one of The New Yorker magazine’s ten top discs of the year.
