message from the Mayor Welcome to today’s performance – Big, The Musical, a play containing all the classic moments from the movie and adding an energetic, yet heartfelt score; a lively show with lots of heart and comedy for audiences young and old. It’s hard to believe that what started as a youth drama program to fill those long summer days, would grow into such a reputable and widely respected children’s theatre program. Much of St. Albert Children’s Theatre’s success can be attributed to the staff, parents, Board members and dedicated volunteers and their tireless commitment to cultivating a lifelong love of theatre arts in our youth. I believe that encouraging our children to participate in the arts grows confidence and develops skills that will serve them well in all that they do.

message from the Artistic Director Big has been on my list of ‘shows to do’ for many years. The musical is based on the Tom Hanks ‘80’s movie of the same name and opened on Broadway in 1996. In 1998 the show had a huge overhaul by creators Maltby, Shire and Weidman and the touring production received rave reviews.

The premise of the story is simple – a 12 year old boy dreams of becoming ‘big.’ He finds a Zoltar machine at the touring Carnival, makes his wish and it comes true. He soon discovers that being big isn’t quite the same as he imagined. I think we can all relate to those dreams of being old enough to drive a car, or vote, or be legal. I keep telling the SACT actors to be patient and not to grow up too fast. I’m on the other side now sometimes wishing I could rollback the hands of time. You couldn’t pay me enough to go through the teen years again but there are plenty of days I wouldn’t mind rolling the clock back a decade or two!

SACT has such a wonderful, dedicated, long-term team of artistic and technical staff that are incredibly passionate about theatre. The success of this program truly lies with them. I would like to give a special shout out to Jackie this year. She has raised the bar considerably with her choreography and the kids are working incredibly hard to bring her work to life and make her proud. You are about to watch an incredible group of young people that have spent countless hours in the rehearsal hall. I am so honoured to know them and to have the opportunity to • sact.ca Call 780-459-1542 • work with them each and every day. message from the Friends of

St. Albert Children’s Theatre

The Friends of St. Albert Children’s Theatre Society is very pleased to

welcome you to the production of BIG, the Musical. The teamwork, enthusiasm and dedication of the directors, staff, technicians, Arden volunteers, parents and performers combine to create an incredible and memorable production. What you are about to see is the culmination of all those months of hard work. The society offers a sincere thank you to all these amazing individuals. Of course, a BIG thanks goes to the youth performing tonight. These young actors have spent countless hours rehearsing since the end of August; learning lines, choreography and music. They have helped each other back stage with homework, cheered each other on during talent shows and have learned what leadership, mentoring and teamwork is really all about. Congratulations on your performance tonight. And finally, thanks to all of you in the audience for your continued support of this program. We invite you to sit back and enjoy. And if you made a wish that you will see a fabulous show, Zoltar says that your wish will come true. big, the musical

Health minister interviewed Alberta’s new health minister gives a rundown of her priorities.. . . . . . .

Did you know that the total area of St. Albert is 4,973 hectares? This and many other points of statistical interest were contained within the city’s 2014 annual report. Council signed off on the report on Monday night. Statistics were available on a myriad of topics, from crime rates to financial information to the number of people who went to the Arden Theatre last year. Here’s a sampling of some of the statistics in the report:

By Kevin Ma Staff Writer The tents are going up on Mission Hill this week as St. Albert’s Catholic schools gear up for the big finish to their 150-year birthday bash. Some 6,000 students from the Greater St. Albert Catholic school district are set to march on Mission Hill Thursday morning for a celebratory mass – the penultimate event in the district’s yearlong celebration of its 150th anniversary. “It was an education system that started very quietly and was responsible for the needs of seven orphan children at the time,” said board superintendent David Keohane. “From those humble beginnings, we’ve seen a school system grow to a size of 6,000 students in three communities.” The mass itself will be similar to the one held in 2011 for the city’s sesquicentennial, Keohane said. Archbishop Richard Smith will lead the ceremony, which will include performances by local schools. “If it’s anything like the one we did to celebrate the 150 years of St. Albert, it will be a pretty moving experience.” Expect the main-stage to go up by the ball diamond at the bottom of the hill on Wednesday. Thursday morning will see some 45 school buses converge on the hill packed with students, with hundreds more making their way to the site on foot. The event will go rain or shine, and is open to the public. The mass is from 9:45 to 11 a.m. Guests are asked to bring their own blankets or chairs to sit on, and to walk to the hill, as parking is very limited. Once the mass is done, crews will take down the stage and replace it with a big tent for Saturday’s big finish: the 150th anniversary gala, a posh event featuring formal dress, cocktails and a gourmet dinner. Tickets were about 90 per cent sold as of Wednesday, but there might be a few left by Saturday. The gala will feature a pair of auctions run by host Danny Hooper, Keohane said. Items up for bid include a lease on a new Volvo, a painting by St. Albert artist Lewis Lavoie (one that Lavoie will actually paint during the gala), a trip to the Vatican, and tickets to the Sept. 5 football match between Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish and the University of Texas Longhorns. Tickets to Notre Dame football games normally cost between $500 and $5,000 and are highly sought after, Keohane said. Proceeds from the auction will go towards the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools Education Foundation. Visit gsacrd.ab.ca for all the details. kma@stalbert.greatwest.ca

TAKE A SEAT! the best seats in the house... can be yours!

Spotlight on C18-C20 Since its inception, St. Albert Children’s Theatre has provided training and opportunities for young people to develop skills not only in dramatics, vocals and dance, but also in leadership skills, confidence, commitment, and team participation. Respected and encouraged, participants acquire a variety of life skills that last a lifetime. The success of any program is the result of hard work, passion and dedication by those that run the program. Janice Flower has been with the St. Albert Children’s Theatre since 1985, and has acted as the Artistic Director since 1995. Janice, along with her team of Jaqueline Pooke and Rachel Bowron have dedicated their lives to the success of this program as well as to the youth of this community. It only seemed right to have seats dedicated to them. The seats were chosen by the Friends of St. Albert Children’s Theatre, the board that supports the program through fundraising and awareness. We chose seats C18 – C20 as this is where the team would often sit for long hours, directing, nurturing and encouraging the children as they rehearsed for the big show. The few words chosen to adorn these seats in recognition of these people could not possibly express the love and gratitude from the over 4000 children and their families that have participated in St. Albert Children’s Theatre. Janice, Jaqueline and Rachel, we hope this dedication serves as a reminder of the difference you have made in the lives of so many. What are YOU waiting for?

Put your name on your favourite seat or give a unique gift to mark a special occasion, promote your business or make a memorial tribute – the possibilities are endless. Centre Stage: $1000 | Spotlight: $500 | Footlights: $250 Your benefit – eligible seat donations will be recognized with: • An engraved armrest plaque

• A tax receipt

For more information or to select your seat, contact Vineeta Dasoar at (780) 459-6664, or vdasoar@stalbert.ca. Seating map available at ardentheatre.com.
