DAVID MYLES:
It’s Christmas
NEW BRUNSWICK & NOVA SCOTIA
Tuesday, December 6 • 7:30 PM Armed with a profound love of music, Maritime native David Myles offers a fresh take on beloved Christmas classics. Widely recognized for his spirited songs, flawless musicianship and humorous anecdotes, this multi-talented and multi-award winning entertainer is sure to warm the heart of even the coldest Grinch with his irresistible energy and musical integrity. A self-proclaimed music fan, first and foremost, Myles has delved into jazz, Latin, country, folk, doo wop and even bluegrass throughout his esteemed career. Now, performing songs from his album It’s Christmas, the genre-bending artist puts his crooning stamp on yuletide favourites and in the process creates a record that is far from ordinary. From soon-to-be Christmas classics of his own creation, to jolly reinventions of holiday staples such as Let It Snow and White Christmas, Myles produces a sound that is unique, intimate and, well, magical. A real holiday gift, Myles invites audiences to ponder the true meaning of the season and reflect on messages of hope, generosity, love and peace.
“The Canadian guitarist and singer brings genuine humility to his collection of holiday classics … applying a Chet Atkins-like instrumental acumen without a shred of exhibitionism. Totally refreshing in its low-key charm.” ~ Los Angeles Times

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. Friday, December 16 & Saturday, December 17 • 7:30 PM Known for expertly blending sounds from around the world and near telepathic interactions on stage, The McDades are one of the most innovative and versatile groups in Canada. Equipped with a spirit of adventure, this Juno Award-winning ensemble continues to push musical boundaries with Celtic-rooted tunes that flawlessly fuse the spontaneity of jazz improvisation with infectious global rhythms. McDade siblings Shannon, Solon and Jeremiah form the heart of this tight-sounding quintet whose groundbreaking compositions and innovative arrangements are characterized by a stunning virtuosity rarely found. Growing up performing alongside parents Terry and Danielle, and surrounded by musical influences from across the globe, the family developed a deep love and respect for all types of music and culture. From Shannon’s lyrical fiddle and Jeremiah’s searing winds, to Solon’s smooth bass, The McDades prove what it truly means to be a Canadian musician. Featuring both energetic instrumentals and sensitive vocals performed in both English and French, one of Edmonton’s most beloved musical families has teamed up with a 16-piece chamber music orchestra conducted by Allan Gilliland to bring a Celtic twist to Christmas classics this holiday season. For two festive nights, The McDades and a selection of the Edmonton region’s finest musicians will restore your faith in creative music that is true to its roots and will fill your heart with the warm spirit and gracious heart that is this family.

Away FROM HER
ONTARIO
Sunday, January 15 • 2 PM A heartbreaking masterpiece, Away From Her shines a light on Alzheimer’s disease and the family ties that bind. Married for over 50 years, Grant and Fiona’s seemingly idyllic retired life is full of tenderness and humour. That is, until their unwavering commitment to each other is attacked by an unseen enemy: memory loss. Initially, the couple is able to casually brush-off small slips like Fiona misplacing a frying pan in the refrigerator and making retrained references to the past – a time when their marriage may not have been such a fairy tale. But when Fiona forgets her way home and memory lapses become more obvious and dramatic, the couple’s limits of love and loyalty must be wrenchingly redefined as they deal with the fact that Fiona is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Much to Grant’s deep reluctance, his wife insists on being placed in a home care facility familiar with her special needs. However, over time her memory diminishes to the point where she no longer recognizes Grant as her husband, and instead forms a close connection with another in-care patient. Starring Gordon Pinsent (Grant) and Julie Christie (Fiona), this intricate love story is told with utmost grace. Although wrapped in a sense of sadness and helplessness, the couple holds strong as every ounce of caring and commitment to each other is challenged as they both find some closure in this new chapter of their life.
“[Director] Sarah Polley […] has the courage to simply observe the devastation of the disease. Alzheimer’s is usually like that.” ~ Roger Eberts Rating: PG • Course language

BARRY ALLEN
& The New Rebels ALBERTA
Saturday, January 21 • 7:30 PM Born and raised in Edmonton, Barry Allen dominated the rock music scene in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Now, the multi-talented performer and producer returns to the stage with new music and a new band. Once a household name, Allen enjoyed a successful music career both as the lead singer of Wes Dakus & The Rebels and as a solo artist – where he was signed to Capitol Records and garnered multiple Maple Awards (before they were renamed the Junos) as Canada’s most promising male vocalist and Canada’s top male vocalist. Allen also scored a No. 1 hit record in 1966 with Lovedrops and had multiple radio charting recordings like Easy Come, Easy Go, Turn Her Down, Penny A Teardrop, and It’s Alright to name a few. Also an award-winning producer, Allen’s name has become synonymous with Edmonton’s Homestead Recorders since it’s inception in 1985 – the studio that made k.d. Lang’s first albums and has become home to hundreds of well-known Canadian artists such as the Corb Lund Band, Captain Tractor, Adam Gregory and Wide Mouth Mason. Now reliving his roots and passionate music career with The New Rebels – Al McGree, Percy Marshall, Clay White and Del Chadwick – Allen takes audiences back in time as he performs nostalgic rock hits plus new music from the band’s forthcoming album, The Speed of Dark.
“People love to hear those old tunes and I want to make one more record before I stop,” Barry Allen ~ Roger Levesque/Edmonton Journal

MARCO CLAVERIA Project ALBERTA
Friday, January 27 • 7:30 PM Acclaimed Edmonton musician Marco Claveria has a passionate connection to his homeland. Born in Santiago, Chile to a musical family, he began playing guitar at the age of 10, learning Chilean folk songs and other styles of popular Chilean music such as Cuecas, Tonadas, Resbaloza and Argentinian Samba. After immigrating to Canada in the early 80s, Marco’s musical horizons continued to broaden as he immersed himself into the minds of some of Cuba’s greatest musical masters, helped found the popular Alberta group, ¡Bomba!, and extensively toured South America, the United States and Canada. Now, the 2015 World Music Award winner fuses Afro-Peruvian, Brazilian, Cuban and Chilean music with his band, the Marco Claveria Project, to create an eclectic and pulsating mix of Latin and Celtic rhythms with Havana flair. In his most recent release, Origenes, the selfproclaimed “Chilean at heart” joined forces with some of Canada’s top musicians to jointly begin a new musical chapter in his life. It’s an evening of hot Latin rhythms The Arden Theatre audiences won’t soon forget.
“…[Claveria] represents a positive image of our country as a medley of nationalities and musical styles blended to create a unique, yet practical and relevant repertoire.” ~ The Wanderer Online

NEW NORTH Collective
YUKON, NUNAVUT, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
Saturday, January 28 • 7:30 PM The expansive and breathtaking imagery of northern Canada comes to light in songs co-written and performed by a diverse collective of artists from the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. While each member of this new seven piece ensemble had established successful music careers as solo performers or as part of other groups, Diyet, Sylvia Cloutier, Pat Braden, Carmen Braden, Graeme Peters, Robert Van Lieshout, and Jan de Vroede saw an even greater opportunity to build stronger connections and music together. Officially formed in 2015, New North Collective work to explore their ideas of the North – from the land to the people, from the traditional to the contemporary – and to create a musical collage of story and song. Folk, traditional, jazz, rock, spoken word and throat singing meld into one unique and complex sound. Under the artistic direction of Yukon artist Diyet, New North Collective’s music is as original as the North – wild and beautiful, where anything is possible.
“It’s music for everybody. There’s a sense of joy and energy that’s inviting. Sometimes things that come from the middle of nowhere are amazing.” ~ Diayet (Eat Drink Travel Magazine)
