How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. From quirky kids’ songs to foot-tapping classics, Michelle & Friends share their musical fun with the whole family. They showcase original upbeat songs along with tunes from different genres including “Let It Go” from the animated hit film Frozen and “The Wheels on the Bus,” a classic nursery rhyme song.

Michelle Rempel is a local musician who loves entertaining children because they participate so enthusiastically with clapping, singing and shouting suggestions. Michelle learned to play fiddle at the young age of three, and honed her love of performing while a member of St. Albert Children’s Theatre. Michelle’s friends include her husband, Keith Rempel, who plays bass and sousaphone — a brass instrument similar to a tuba. Matt Grier joins in on drums and guitar. Brennan Cameron rounds out the sound with keyboard, mandolin and banjo. The group encourages the crowd to join them in song and play for an experience that’s sure to engage and inspire the young and young at heart. Whimsical art in Public Places Sculpture Honours International Children’s Festival

A new addition to St. Albert’s Art in Public Places collection, Butterfly Kaleidoscope was created to help commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival of the Arts. Created by Alberta visual artist and designer Karen Ho Fatt Lee, this sculpture playfully combines butterflies and flowers. The butterfly not only symbolizes a transformation from youth to adulthood, but also the Festival experience as it changes the lives of children through the arts. “Petals are transformed into butterfly wings and the centre core of the flower is comprised of butterflies in a pattern that appears to move as it casts reflection from the sun,” says Ho Fatt Lee. “From a distance, people will see a flower, but as they get closer, the patterning of the butterflies feeding on a flower becomes more apparent,” she says. Highly visible, the piece also acts as a wayfinder to the Founders’ Walk garden area, which celebrates St. Albert’s River Lots and agricultural history. Butterfly Kaleidoscope was one of three pieces unveiled in May 2017 as part of The Butterfly Project. Other sculptures included Feeder, located in Lafleur Park (created by Tony Stallard) and Becoming, located in St. Albert Place (created by Ted Fullerton). To date, St. Albert boasts over 300 unique pieces in its collection of sculptures, murals and paintings. “Public art is open to everyone,” explains Ho Fatt Lee who has created three other sculptures for the City of St. Albert. “It provides a new way to experience the community and gives us something to think about as well.” Local public art projects are supported through the City of St. Albert’s Percent for Public Art Program, where the City dedicates one per cent of the budgeted cost of all eligible capital projects to fund the accession of public art. This fund provides new inspirational artworks that speak of St. Albert’s legacy and commitment to build a sense of community and belonging. bobs & lolo Sunday, November 5, 2017 | 2 PM Pre-show activity starts at 1 PM

The stars of Treehouse TV’s Sing, Dance & Play with Bobs & LoLo bring their musical

adventure to The Arden Theatre. Named Canada’s favourite kids’ entertainers in a CBC music poll, the beloved duo teaches children valuable lessons about nature through music, motion and imagination. Robyn Hardy (Bobs) & Lorraine Pond (LoLo) met at a west-coast summer camp. The pair, who debuted as a team in 2003, have written and recorded six award-winning albums that feature songs about marine life, healthy living, going green and the interconnectedness of the world. They also wrote Run Salmon Run, a children’s book about the lifecycle of wild salmon. Bobs & LoLo have also received critical acclaim for their work from the Parents’ Choice Foundation and the Western Canadian Music Alliance. The Juno-nominated singer-songwriters have backgrounds in education, and they enjoy engaging with nature and, of course, children. Their collaboration gives them the chance to combine these two passions into one uplifting act that brings their love of the outdoors indoors with energy and joy — along with sliding and gliding, clapping and tapping. Bobs & LoLo’s upbeat songs and interactive moments will have kids singing and dancing with delight while learning to care for themselves and the world around them.

“Ridiculously catchy hooks, memorable lyrics, a sense of fun and wild abandonment: All are key to making great music. Vancouver-based Bobs & LoLo meet all these criteria.” — The Province

morton the magician in : ta da! Saturday, February 17, 2018 | 2 PM Pre-show activity starts at 1 PM

From one of Canada’s most sought-after magicians comes a delightful story

about achieving your dreams. Ta Da! finds young Morton dreaming of becoming a magician. A school talent show seems like the perfect chance, but Morton is afraid! Can he overcome his fears to find courage and confidence with the help of his friend Harry — who just happens to be a talking rabbit? The answer will be revealed during this captivating play that features magic, masks and movement. This inspiring show is based on illusionist Sheldon Casavant’s 2010 children’s book Morton the Magician and His Magnificent Magic Show. The book, illustrated by Amanda Schutz, was shortlisted for Alberta’s 2011 R. Ross Annett Award for Children’s Literature. Following the book’s success, Casavant, with the help of Shutz’ drawings and mask and costume designers, has transformed Morton into a lovable live-action character to entertain and engage the whole family. Based in Edmonton, Casavant has performed at the International Children’s Festival of the Arts. He also mystifies with magic for audiences all over the world. His humorous, high-energy performances earned him two nominations as Entertainer of the Year from the Canadian Events Industry Awards, and an invitation to perform for athletes in Vancouver during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

kamikaZe fiReflies

Saturday, April 21, 2018 | 2 PM Pre-show activity starts at 1 PM

From see-it-to-believe-it feats of balance and acrobatics to side-splitting

comedy, a Kamikaze FireFlies event offers something memorable for everyone, of all ages. Their tricks of the trade may initially seem typical — juggling pins and hula hoops, as well as cracking whips. The routines they create with these tools, though, are anything but. Circus and comedy collide when husband and wife daredevil duo Rob Williams and Casey Martin zip around the stage; the only thing you can expect is the unexpected. The popular performers were a hit on America’s Got Talent. They received a standing ovation from the audience and praise from the panel. In their awe-inspiring act, Martin balanced precariously on a shopping cart and juggled flaming torches with Williams, who’d climbed up onto the shoulders of Nick Cannon, the show’s surprised and nervous host. Before co-creating Kamikaze FireFlies, Williams toured the world for 20 years with The Flaming Idiots, a comedy juggling trio. Now, as Kamikaze FireFlies, the pair hold four Guinness World Records for their antics and zany brand of family fun.
