Welcome to the Arden Theatre’s 2012-2013 season.

With the approach of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, our Government is pleased to celebrate all that makes Canada a remarkable country, including organizations like the Arden Theatre. For almost 30 years, this theatre has contributed to the cultural vitality of St. Albert and indeed Alberta as a whole, offering residents and visitors first-class performances designed to attract audiences of all ages and from all walks of life. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate everyone involved with the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.

The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

O

n behalf of the Government of Alberta, I would like to welcome everyone to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.

Located in the heart of downtown St. Albert, the Arden Theatre is the city’s cultural soul, connecting community members in all walks of life to the joy of artistic performance. In the theatre’s seats, people of all ages have been captivated by the music, drama, magic and fun of the theatre’s diverse programming. As well as hosting internationally acclaimed entertainers, the theatre’s stage has showcased school performances and dance competitions, giving local talent a taste of the limelight. Just as important, the theatre’s lobby echoes 29 years of laughs and spirited conversation between friends, family and community members. My thanks to the numerous staff members, volunteers and arts enthusiasts for their dedication to supporting and promoting the Arden Theatre as a cherished cultural hub in St. Albert. Without further ado, enjoy the performance!

The Honourable Heather Klimchuk Minister of Culture and Community Services MLA, Edmonton-Glenora

I invite you to take flight with the Arden and cultivate inspiration through rich artistic offerings. With an engaging and diverse program of music, comedy, theatre, dance, and film, your imagination will be soaring to new heights. Whether it’s their first appearance on our stage – like the iconic Cowboy Junkies or comedian Brent Butt, or they are returning due to popular demand – like the delightful Lunch at Allen’s or well-loved Matt Andersen – I am confident that whatever your mood or preference, you’ll find something this season that will excite your senses. For our younger audiences, we have a wonderful selection of family programming that promises a fun-filled and educational ride for children through the wondrous world of silly science, the quintessential sounds of New Orleans, and a multimedia presentation where the stage becomes an artist’s studio. St. Albert Children’s Theatre also brings to the Arden stage an adaptation of the wildly popular novel and blockbuster movie Legally Blonde, The Musical. Thank you to the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society, the many dedicated volunteers and the Cultural Services staff, for your efforts, year after year, in uniting us all with rich artistic experiences. Thank you for your ongoing support of cultural expression in our community. Now please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

elcome to another season of fabulous family fun! We start our series with Garry Krinsky, who will delight all-ages as he brings science to the circus; he may be clowning around, but it’s all in an effort to prove that science can be fun! Next up, take a trip to New Orleans for a Mardi Gras celebration with The Hot 8 Brass Band; guaranteed to have the whole family dancing to their funky West African Rhythms and festive New Orleans jazz. And finally enter L’Atelier (The Studio), and discover the vibrant collision of dance and visual art as performed by Quebec’s Bouge de là; this vivid show uses motion capture technology to paint rainbows of colour onto the stage. I would also like to invite moms, dads, and grandparents with toddlers in tow to come join us for a dose of mid-morning entertainment. At this year’s Noisy Theatre shows we’ll be ‘Singing with Sylvia’ and creating magic with Malcolm the Magician; remember shushing is not allowed! Caitlin North Professional Programming Presenter

o say performing is in Garry Krinsky’s blood, would be putting it mildly. Growing up as the youngest of four, to parents who appreciated and encouraged a love of all things theatre, Garry knew quite early on that entertaining would always be part of his life. Combining animated movement and non-stop energy with a creative flair, Garry’s natural abilities, together with his desire and work ethic, has created a path for him that has truly satisfied his inner clown and brought smiles and laughter to audiences for decades.

It was only a matter of time before Garry’s fondness for learning became inspiration for his performances. Commissioned by the Museum of Science in Boston, Garry created Toying with Science; a fast-paced, dynamic program that explores the scientific principles of gravity, leverage, pivots and simple machines. With the help of his circus skills, miming, original music, and audience involvement, Garry investigates basic scientific information and delves into the imaginations of scientists who explore our world. Toying with Science educates and entertains through motion, music, humour and insight, with Garry even balancing five ladders at one time on his chin to find the centre of gravity! What better way to introduce the wonders of science than through creative and funny demonstrations that will surely inspire.

NOISY THEATRE Singing with Sylvia

is a wonderfully exuberant, original and engaging children’s music performer. Her songs move from the sandbox to the jungle, bedtime to playtime, and take an intelligent look at the really interesting things in life as she sees them. What do babies really like to eat? How do you go about popularizing a very unpopular colour? What is a pirate’s favourite letter of the alphabet? You never quite know what the real answer may be when Sylvia Chave bounds onto the stage. Her offbeat characters and unbridled love of performing weaves a special magic that allows her to create an amazing rapport with her audiences, leaving parents and children alike full of delight. Sylvia’s voice is an amazing instrument; from the haunting howls of a ghost to the gruff bark of a no nonsense pirate, the high pitched cackle of a chatty to a loveable crow, she can lead you in a loud raucous chorus, hush you with a whisper and soothe you with the smooth liquid tones of a lullaby. In this Noisy Theatre presentation, as soon as Sylvia starts a singin’, kids are sure to feel the wiggles creep into their toes, and before you know it, they’ll be movin’ and groovin’ in the aisles. Sylvia’s performing career began in 1990 with the birth of Prairie Patch, a fabulous children’s duo she formed with partner Clare Pattison. It was with Prairie Patch that Sylvia began her journey as a songwriter and storyteller. The duo’s premier CD, Surprise, received critical and fan acclaim with its nomination for the Prairie Music Awards Best Children’s Album of the Year. Sylvia’s first solo CD, Renji Penji, garnered a 2007 Western Canadian Music Awards nomination.

T

he endless energy, contagious humour, and gigantic hearts of the members of New Orleans’ own Hot 8 Brass Band is obvious as soon as they step onto the stage. Having been at the forefront of the city’s street music scene since 1995, the band produces a waterfall of soal-soaked sound that you’ll find truly irresistible. Their spicy brew of funky, hip reggae-jazz steeped in West African tradition lets these musicians let loose on familiar parade songs, modern marches, and inspired brass covers in an energizing fusion that showcases their joyful musical heritage. The Hot 8 Brass Band invigorates audiences with the quintessential, unstoppable sound of New Orleans that’ll have you and your family dancing the afternoon away. This group not only creates a lively, upbeat and entertaining performance, they also make educational waves as ambassadors of hope through their efforts to keep New Orleans music alive, preserving the wetlands of coastal Louisiana, and spreading stories of Hurricane Katrina survivors. Shake off that January chill and join us for a bright and blazing hot afternoon of brass.

NOISY THEATRE

A

wildly popular favourite at the International Children’s Festival, there was no question that we wanted to invite Malcolm the Magician back to charm and mystify the Arden’s young audiences. A classic magician with over 15 years experience performing all around the world, Malcolm Russell has more surprises up his sleeve than what could fit reasonably inside a suitcase. Delivering up-close magic that will amaze even the most skeptical spectator, this magician extraordinaire will leave children wide-eyed with impeccable sleight-of-hand and impossible trickery. No matter how carefully you watch his deck of cards or waving hands, the magical mysteries stack up as the show goes on. This Noisy Theatre presentation will leave you and your children simply mind-boggled!

n the final performance of the 2012-2013 Family Series, the Arden stage is transformed into an artist’s studio – a space for invention and creativity, where ideas burst forth and blend together. In a vibrant collision of dance and visual art, four dancers treat the studio as a magical treasure chest, playing with fabric, frames, paintings, and props to create original multimedia pieces using motion capture technology. A veritable ode to the creative spirit that lies in each of us, Quebec’s Bouge de là explores colours, lines and movement, transporting young audiences into an enchanting world that stimulates their senses and piques their curiosity. The Montreal Gazette states:

“L’atelier (The Studio) is a layered, visually captivating tribute to the creation process, forging common ground between body and art, and paced to perfection for young attention spans.” Paintings spring to life before our eyes, turning into enchanting dance and movement in an ebb and flow that is driven by the whims and imagination of the performers, who joyously plunge into a universe of their own making. Enthralling and charming, L’atelier is a striking tableaux full of dynamic motion that will ignite the fires of inspiration in the young, and young at heart.
