Thursday, February 4 • 7:30 pm Scholarly, eloquent and passionate. Vijay Gupta is an

internationally acclaimed violinist whose passion for neurobiology and mental health issues has made him a world-renowned advocate for the redemptive and regenerative power of music. In his work as founder and artistic director of Street Symphony, Gupta shows underserved men, women and youth on skid row the power of musical expression. A TED Senior Fellow and Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist, Gupta works tirelessly to promote the ability of music to change our brains, heal ailments and ultimately transform lives. Passionately speaking about Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, his friend and main character of the book and movie, The Soloist, Gupta shows audiences that music isn’t just something to be enjoyed – it’s something that can change lives and bring people back from the brink in their darkest times.

Prior to joining the philharmonic at the age of 19, Gupta received a master’s degree in music from Yale University and a bachelor’s degree in premedical biology, where he was part of several prestigious research projects in the field of neurodegenerative biology. Musician, speaker, activist. One thing is certain – this virtuoso violinist’s dedication to use his unique talents for social causes will touch audiences in ways they never thought possible.

Health minister interviewed Alberta’s new health minister gives a rundown of her priorities.. . . . . . .

Did you know that the total area of St. Albert is 4,973 hectares? This and many other points of statistical interest were contained within the city’s 2014 annual report. Council signed off on the report on Monday night. Statistics were available on a myriad of topics, from crime rates to financial information to the number of people who went to the Arden Theatre last year. Here’s a sampling of some of the statistics in the report:

By Kevin Ma Staff Writer The tents are going up on Mission Hill this week as St. Albert’s Catholic schools gear up for the big finish to their 150-year birthday bash. Some 6,000 students from the Greater St. Albert Catholic school district are set to march on Mission Hill Thursday morning for a celebratory mass – the penultimate event in the district’s yearlong celebration of its 150th anniversary. “It was an education system that started very quietly and was responsible for the needs of seven orphan children at the time,” said board superintendent David Keohane. “From those humble beginnings, we’ve seen a school system grow to a size of 6,000 students in three communities.” The mass itself will be similar to the one held in 2011 for the city’s sesquicentennial, Keohane said. Archbishop Richard Smith will lead the ceremony, which will include performances by local schools. “If it’s anything like the one we did to celebrate the 150 years of St. Albert, it will be a pretty moving experience.” Expect the main-stage to go up by the ball diamond at the bottom of the hill on Wednesday. Thursday morning will see some 45 school buses converge on the hill packed with students, with hundreds more making their way to the site on foot. The event will go rain or shine, and is open to the public. The mass is from 9:45 to 11 a.m. Guests are asked to bring their own blankets or chairs to sit on, and to walk to the hill, as parking is very limited. Once the mass is done, crews will take down the stage and replace it with a big tent for Saturday’s big finish: the 150th anniversary gala, a posh event featuring formal dress, cocktails and a gourmet dinner. Tickets were about 90 per cent sold as of Wednesday, but there might be a few left by Saturday. The gala will feature a pair of auctions run by host Danny Hooper, Keohane said. Items up for bid include a lease on a new Volvo, a painting by St. Albert artist Lewis Lavoie (one that Lavoie will actually paint during the gala), a trip to the Vatican, and tickets to the Sept. 5 football match between Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish and the University of Texas Longhorns. Tickets to Notre Dame football games normally cost between $500 and $5,000 and are highly sought after, Keohane said. Proceeds from the auction will go towards the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools Education Foundation. Visit gsacrd.ab.ca for all the details. kma@stalbert.greatwest.ca

Friday, February 12 • 7:30 pm Two of the world’s best acoustic guitar ensembles team up for an unforgettable night of music. With over 40 years of combined performing experience, the Montréal Guitar Trio (MG3) and California Guitar Trio (CGT) become one voice as they crisscross the universe of progressive rock, world, jazz and classical music genres. While each trio offers a uniquely different sound, the dynamic six-guitar ensemble will play original compositions as well as innovative takes on some of the greatest rock classics from legendary groups such as Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Rush. Shattering stylistic expectations of what is possible when six guitarists share the stage, MG3’s virtuosity, rigour, creativity and impressive stage presence is perfectly paired with the dazzling musicianship and steel strings of CGT. Touring together since 2010, this “double trio” has proven to be a match made in heaven. MG3, described by the CBC as the hottest guitar ensemble in Canada, has collaborated and shared the stage with many world-renowned ensembles and artists – the most memorable to date with CGT, a group with no boundaries and a questing spirit to transcend their instruments and fearlessly explore the intersections between genres.

Thursday, February 18 • 7:30 pm This is That is a satirical current affairs radio news program that doesn’t just talk about the issues, it fabricates them! Nothing is off limits – politics, business, culture, justice, science, religion – if it matters to Canadians, writers and hosts Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring will find out the ‘this’ and the ‘that’ of the story. Each week a healthy mix of character interviews and mockumentary stories unique to Canada takes over the air waves as the straight-faced duo imply that what they are telling us is true. With well-documented stories, often pondered by experts, the program frequently draws phone calls from listeners who fail to realize they are listening to a comedy program and take the content seriously. Now, in a rare and intimate look behind the studio doors of CBC’s award-winning show, audiences can catch a glimpse of how two insanely talented people can provide all the voices for this completely improvised radio comedy show. Both accomplished comedians, actors and writers, Kelly and Oldring have also appeared on film and television – most recently creating and performing in a Comedy Network original series. Created by the seasoned veterans of The Second City and other troupes, This is That has picked-up three Canadian Comedy Awards since debuting in 2010.

Saturday, February 20 • 7:30 pm Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal (BJM) is a repertory company that presents a hybrid form of dance that combines the aesthetics of classical ballet and embraces many other different styles of dance. Very contemporary in its current approach, BJM performances are sexy, explosive, original and accessible, and its superb dancers are widely acclaimed. The term “jazz” in the name refers more to a “jazzing up” of classical ballet rather than a musical or dance style. BJM is one of Canada’s most popular dance companies. It has presented more than 2,000 performances in 66 countries to more than two million spectators, and is a veritable ambassador of Quebec and Canadian culture worldwide. Remaining ever-evolving their pieces are marked by dynamic physicality, virtuosity and their unique signature. The success of BJM is due to the particular alchemy that allows each new work to become the fruit of a memorable encounter between the choreography, the dancers and the audience.

lennie gallant Thursday, February 25 • 7:30 pm One of Canada’s best singer songwriters, Lennie Gallant has garnered respect for

his hard-hitting songs that chronicle the lives of people dealing with tremendous adversity. The eloquent folk veteran’s collection of work also celebrates the beauty of lifestyle and landscape with powerful lyricism and stirring narratives. A Prince Edward Island native, Gallant has recorded 10 albums, two in French, earning him multiple East Coast Music Awards and three Juno Award nominations. The acclaimed musician has represented Canada on the world stage at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and entertained troops in Kandahar. His songs, recorded by various artists, have been featured in films, stage productions, and on television. Named to the Order of Canada, Gallant is also a published author and playwright. A consummate storyteller, Gallant was recently honoured with a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for Solo Artist of the Year for his latest recording Live Acoustic at The Carleton. Captured over two nights in the intimate atmosphere of The Carleton in Halifax, one of the best venues on the east coast to hear singer-songwriters like Gallant, his latest album features new songs as well as fresh takes on familiar favourites. He returns to the Arden with a small acoustic crew and reminds audiences of his strong writing skills and powerful performance style.

“Lennie Gallant is one of my favourite Canadian songwriters. I have always wanted to bring his music to the forefront.” – Jimmy Buffett Sponsored by

Friday, February 26 • 7:30 pm A bright light in the world of independent music, The Hearts deliver a

sophisticated and energetic show that is daring and brilliantly creative. Led by St. Albertborn and raised frontman, Jeff Stuart, the six-piece band mixes retro-pop, folk-rock and electronica genres to construct an expansive and innovative sound. Respected as a top live act, their music has received international critical acclaim, charted on radio across Canada and featured in both HBO and MTV productions. Their new album, Equal Love, emphasizes the synthesizer and amplifies the soul with the band’s signature tangled-roots sound. However, unlike the previous two records, The Hearts’ latest release transmits a higher sense of collusion among the band with melodies, harmonies and hooks that are allowed to groove and breathe. This double bill event also features The Provincial Archive, a poignantly poetic quartet, led by St. Albert’s Craig Schram. Performing cuts from the newly released, Bad Connection, the adventurous band combines traditional instrumentation with electronic elements for a unique folk-informed indie-pop sound. Armed with a collection of songs that showcases the group’s brilliant lyricism and introspective musicality, the focused album is a force to be reckoned with. Thick vocal harmony, entangled melody and indiscriminate instrumentation have become synonymous with The Provincial Archive’s reputation.

alejandra ribera Saturday, February 27 • 7:30 pm A seductive performer. An

innovative songwriter. Toronto-born Alejandra Ribera is a storyteller at heart. She purposefully draws her audience into an intimate world where inventive melodies are woven passionately in English, French and Spanish. Often compared to Tom Waits and Kate Bush, Ribera displays an intoxicating blend of traditional songwriting, richly textured arrangements and exotic European sensibility that is inherently her own.

A rising star, Ribera was awarded the prestigious SOCAN Songwriting Prize in 2014 for her composition, I Want, a song about hope, joy and gratitude, from her long-awaited second album and true artistic debut, La Boca. The dreamy new collection of songs was years in the making as she painstakingly deliberated every creative detail. Written as she travelled in Spain, Scotland, Slovakia and France, the textured, lightly exotic, cosmopolitan record is chock full of personal truths and eloquently shifts from jazz to folk to pop. Her music touches the soul with drama, sorrow, pain, joy and that light at the end of the tunnel. Living between Montréal and Paris, Ribera has also performed with noteable musicians such as Ron Sexsmith, Jackie Richardson, Steven Page and Teddy Thompson. Aptly described by songwriter Jim Corcoran as “serenely sensual, poetic, playful and profound,” Ribera continues to mesmerize audiences around the world with her distinctive voice and multi-dimentional, multi-genre repertoire.

TAKE A SEAT! the best seats in the house.. can be yours!

Spotlight on C11

Dedicating a seat in memory to my husband Jim is an acknowledgement of the importance of The Arden to this community. Jim enjoyed and supported the arts in every genre. He listened to many styles of music and attended live theatre and gallery events. He was always happy when sitting in a theatre seat or walking through a gallery or museum. He passed this love of the arts on to his children and now his grandchildren are growing up with the same appreciation. -Jeanne Irwin What are YOU waiting for?

Put your name on your favourite seat or give a unique gift to mark a special occasion, promote your business or make a memorial tribute – the possibilities are endless.

Centre Stage: $1000 | Spotlight: $500 | Footlights: $250 Your benefit – eligible seat donations will be recognized with: • An engraved armrest plaque • A tax receipt • You’ll be able to purchase your seat for any show in the 2016-2017 Season during an exclusive pre-sale at the Arden Theatre Box Office.
