MARGARET TRUDEAU: Changing My Mind BRITISH COLUMBIA

Photo: Sian Richards

Friday, February 3 • 7:30 PM As the young wife of a prime minister, Margaret Trudeau first made international headlines in 1971 at the age of 22. She brought glamour to 24 Sussex Drive, raised eyebrows and won hearts by refusing to conform to the traditional notions of what a politician’s wife should be. However, by 1975, the strain of raising three sons and balancing the demands of political life began to take its toll on the self-proclaimed free-thinking flower child. Plagued by misunderstood mood swings, Margaret felt isolated and as a result self-medicated with alcohol and marijuana. Soon, her name became synonymous with scandal and intrigue – partying at New York’s renowned Studio 54 and in Toronto with the Rolling Stones. Under intense public scrutiny, Margaret has lived a life full of highs and lows. Her bestselling book, Changing My Mind, was written in 2010 and chronicled her long battle with bipolar disorder, a diagnosis made public only a decade ago. In a tragic turning point for the twice-divorced mother of Canada’s current prime minister, it wasn’t until her son Michel died in an avalanche in 1998, followed two years later by Pierre’s death, that Margaret fell into deep depression and was eventually hospitalized. Finding help and a new purpose, Margaret is now a well-respected mental health issues advocate who tirelessly shares her personal stories on stage. She reminds others of the importance of nurturing the body, mind and spirit, and works to erase the stigma surrounding mental health.

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. The Long & Winding Road JIM WITTER Starring

ONTARIO

Saturday, February 4 • 7:30 PM

Performance Sponsor:

Ontario’s Jim Witter is a multiple Juno Award nominee and Canadian Country Music Award winner. But more than that, he is an incredibly versatile pianist and performer who has long celebrated masterful artists that have shaped and changed the world’s musical landscape. In his performance The Long and Winding Road, Witter pays tribute to the incredible songwriting talents of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. He not only explores the, sometimes, tumultuous relationship behind the legendary creators of The Beatles’ biggest hits, but also shares insight into the iconic songs that helped shape the music of today. Along with his incredible band, Witter performs timeless tunes such as Yesterday, Blackbird, and you guessed it, The Long and Winding Road. From Witter’s comfortable rapport to rich and powerful voice, audiences feel as though they are part of a private concert in the comfort of their own living room – just as Witter experienced as a child belting out the hits at home with his mother on piano. Encouraged by his family to follow his dream, Witter went on to sign a multi-record deal with Nashville’s Curb Records, home of Tim McGraw, Leann Rimes and Wynonna Judd, with impressive chart action in both Canada and the U.S.

LISA BROKOP

The Patsy Cline Project BRITISH COLUMBIA

Friday, February 10 • 7:30 PM One of the most nominated and award-winning female vocalists in Canadian country music, singer-songwriter Lisa Brokop has enjoyed a musical career that has spanned over 25 years. Since turning professional at the age of 15, the Surrey-born superstar has recorded eight studio albums and more than a dozen Top 40 hits and certified gold records. As a long-time resident of Nashville, Brokop was able to immerse herself in the amazing history and traditions of country music, following in the footsteps of many music legends. In fact, it was while taking a break from the rigors of the road that the acclaimed musician discovered her passion for the art of songwriting. Before long, Brokop was being recognized with a series of Canadian awards and other country stars were recording tracks she penned, including Reba McEntire, Terri Clark and Pam Tillis. Inspired by those who played such a significant role in the creation of the genre, Brokop lends her incredible vocal abilities to pay homage to the influential and acclaimed ‘grand dame’ of country music, Patsy Cline. With memorable songs like Walkin’ After Midnight, I Fall to Pieces and Crazy, the Lisa Brokop: The Patsy Cline Project, will take audiences on a multimedia musical journey. Woven into this special performance will be a number of Brokop’s hits that helped to make her a favourite with audiences throughout North America as well as new material written specifically for the project.

THEBills BRITISH COLUMBIA

Saturday, February 11 • 7:30 PM With two previous Juno Award nominations and multiple Western Canadian Music Awards under their belts, The Bills are renowned for their instrumental virtuosity, lush vocal arrangements, evocative songwriting and fresh sound that transcends musical boundaries and defies simple categorization. With individual band members garnering world-class credentials in folk, roots, jazz, and world music genres, the Victoria-based quintet have firmly established themselves as a Canadian acoustic music super group. Armed with an undeniable west-Canadian sound, this globally inspired band has carved out a unique niche in Canada’s roots music scene over the past two decades. With the 2016 release of Trails of Tales, the bands fifth album, all five musicians penned a song making it their most textured album to date. From infectious, grooving folk/pop vocal numbers to mesmerizing instrumentals, the album features many songs sure to become standards in the deep and rich Canadian folk/roots/rock songbook. The Bills are truly an extraordinary group whose explosive live shows have made them legendary folk/roots entertainers. Whether spinning on your record playlist, entertaining an intimate theatre audience or rocking a festival crowd, these gifted multi-instrumentalists are masters at leaving people breathless and revitalized all at once.

“Their sound is panoramic, mischievous, fiercely unpretentious – and musically splendid.” ~ Boston Globe

MEASHA BRUEGGERGOSMAN: Songs of Freedom NEW BRUNSWICK

Friday, February 17 • 7:30 PM Deeply committed to the art of song, Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman has emerged as one of the most magnificent performers and vibrant personalities in music today. Critically acclaimed for her innate musicianship and voluptuous voice, the New Brunswick native’s passion to share classical music with a mainstream audience breaks the stereotype of an opera diva in every way imaginable. Growing up singing in the choir of her local church, Brueggergosman’s long list of accomplishments go well beyond her years. A Juno Award winner, she has performed for royalty, leaders of Canada, as well as Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan. But beyond the great concert halls of the world, Brueggergosman also lends her voice, passion and energy to social and environmental causes as a Canadian good-will ambassador, and television host and celebrity guest. Relentlessly positive, she’s also well-known for her candour, dealing publicly with big issues of her life – from a life-saving heart surgery to the death of twins in pregnancy. Her extraordinary versatility, intuitive musicality and radiant star quality are reflected in the array of recordings she has made. Songs of Freedom, a stunning stylistic blend of personal quest and historical documentary, is Brueggergosman’s emotional, spiritual and musical journey through the turbulent chapters of North American history. Her performance of an intensely powerful collection of freedom songs during Black History Month, including Amazing Grace, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and Go Tell it on the Mountain, comprise the extremely personal soundtrack to her ancestry.

THE Harpoonist & THE Axe Murderer BRITISH COLUMBIA

Performance Sponsor:

Saturday, February 18 • 7:30 PM Armed with a brilliantly eccentric and utterly unforgettable name, Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers have been making killer music together for nearly a decade. The Vancouver-based blues-rock duo are widely known for their unique sound, commanding stage presence and trademark fervor and honesty. A gritty and funky treat, these long-time friends pay tribute to the past, while moving the blues forward with contemporary cutting-edge lyrics and arrangements. Rugged vocals paired with an arsenal of harmonicas, guitars and foot percussion, gives listeners a wild mix of funk, rock, southern roots, honky-tonk and Motown. Admittedly dissimilar as they are similar, the duo agrees the resulting creative friction has helped their music to evolve into an unapologetic, rough-around-the-edges sound that packs a greasy punch. In addition to multiple Maple Blues Awards, The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer’s most recent album, A Real Fine Mess, was nominated for a 2015 Juno Award. With influences ranging from the iconic songwriting of Willie Dixon to the boundary pushing of Jack White, the musicians are increasingly inspired by the electric ‘groove blues’ of the 50s, 60s, and 70s and are gearing up to release a new album in early 2017.

“The grisly vibe hovering like a murky London fog around the very words ‘Harpoonist’ and ‘Axe Murderer’ suits what and how they play.” ~ Toronto Star

Famed for its intricate dancing, fairy tale fantasy and sweeping score, Swan Lake is a story of true love, the union of two souls, and the ultimate sacrifice – to be set free. Now, in celebration of Ballet Jörgen’s upcoming 30th anniversary, the Ontario-based company brings this timeless tale to The Arden Theatre in all its heroic classical beauty. Company members will dance to Tchaikovsky’s famous score in lavish 17th century inspired costumes made by acclaimed designer and Order of Canada member Robert Doyle. While striking period sets by award-winning Canadian designer Camellia Koo expose the innate beauty of Canada’s national heritage parks. A truly innovative and awe-inspiring production from a company propelled to the forefront of the North American dance scene though the national and international acclaim of over 117 works.
