WELCOME messages

Welcome to the Arden Theatre’s 2012-2013 season.

With the approach of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, our Government is pleased to celebrate all that makes Canada a remarkable country, including organizations like the Arden Theatre. For almost 30 years, this theatre has contributed to the cultural vitality of St. Albert and indeed Alberta as a whole, offering residents and visitors first-class performances designed to attract audiences of all ages and from all walks of life. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate everyone involved with the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.

The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

O

n behalf of the Government of Alberta, I would like to welcome everyone to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.

Located in the heart of downtown St. Albert, the Arden Theatre is the city’s cultural soul, connecting community members in all walks of life to the joy of artistic performance. In the theatre’s seats, people of all ages have been captivated by the music, drama, magic and fun of the theatre’s diverse programming. As well as hosting internationally acclaimed entertainers, the theatre’s stage has showcased school performances and dance competitions, giving local talent a taste of the limelight. Just as important, the theatre’s lobby echoes 29 years of laughs and spirited conversation between friends, family and community members. My thanks to the numerous staff members, volunteers and arts enthusiasts for their dedication to supporting and promoting the Arden Theatre as a cherished cultural hub in St. Albert. Without further ado, enjoy the performance!

The Honourable Heather Klimchuk Minister of Culture and Community Services MLA, Edmonton-Glenora

elcome to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season! I invite you to take flight with the Arden and cultivate inspiration through rich artistic offerings. With an engaging and diverse program of music, comedy, theatre, dance, and film, your imagination will be soaring to new heights. Whether it’s their first appearance on our stage – like the iconic Cowboy Junkies or comedian Brent Butt, or they are returning due to popular demand – like the delightful Lunch at Allen’s or well-loved Matt Andersen – I am confident that whatever your mood or preference, you’ll find something this season that will excite your senses. For our younger audiences, we have a wonderful selection of family programming that promises a fun-filled and educational ride for children through the wondrous world of silly science, the quintessential sounds of New Orleans, and a multimedia presentation where the stage becomes an artist’s studio. St. Albert Children’s Theatre also brings to the Arden stage an adaptation of the wildly popular novel and blockbuster movie Legally Blonde, The Musical. Thank you to the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society, the many dedicated volunteers and the Cultural Services staff, for your efforts, year after year, in uniting us all with rich artistic experiences. Thank you for your ongoing support of cultural expression in our community. Now please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Nolan Crouse Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City

the

northern pikes

Saturday, February 16, 2013  7:30 pm With hits like She Ain’t Pretty and Girl with a Problem, The Northern Pikes helped shape the Canadian musical landscape in the late ’80s and early ’90s with their thick guitar licks and pop-rock melodies. The Northern Pikes quickly became mainstays of rock radio and remain a classic rock favourite to this very day. Formed in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in early 1984, members Don Schmid, Jay Semko, Bryan Potvin and Merl Bryck earned 8 Juno award nominations, released 4 Gold records and 1 Platinum record before electing to go on an indefinite hiatus in June 1993. Six years later, the band reunited to assemble a collection of old favourites and buried treasures, entitled Hits and Assorted Secrets, and haven’t looked back since. Western Canadian Music Award Hall of Fame recipients in 2012, The Northern Pikes’ music, poignant lyrics and vocal harmonizing still sound as fresh and innovative today as it did when they first appeared on the scene in the 80s. Since 2001, original members Don, Jay and Bryan continue to tour as the power trio that they are, and show no signs of slowing down.

Koité Habib Eric Bibb & Brothers in Bamako Friday, February 22, 2013  7:30 pm Brothers in Bamako is a truly international collaboration; an organic merging between Malian singer-songwriter Habib Koité and American bluesman Eric Bibb. With Bibb’s laidback blues, folk, and gospel influences and Koité’s spirited contemporary West African folk/ world roots, the result is a never-before heard sound of lilting instrumentation and warm, soulful vocals that is both passionate and ebullient. The duo met back in 1999 when they were each invited to contribute tracks to Mali to Memphis. They struck a chord, friendship ensued, and they ultimately launched a project that would seamlessly meld each other’s styles, both musically and lyrically. Habib Koité is heir to an ancestral knowledge set to song that places him among the most influential voices of contemporary Africa. His musical mastery shines with a simplicity and brilliance in Brothers in Bamako, as he balances the subtle nuances of West African guitar playing with its abundant musical styles. As one of the highest profile roots musicians in the world, Eric Bibb has established a new generation of bluesmen with what can be considered one of his best projects to date. Forging a bridge across the Atlantic, Bibb and Koité are two seriously talented players whose combined efforts are too exhilarating to ignore. The 13 tracks on Brothers in Bamako showcase songs penned by each artist, as well as several written together, plus a fascinating cover of Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind and the traditional blues song, Goin’ Down the Road Feelin’ Bad.

Old Man Luedecke Old Man Luedecke is a young man with an old soul. Focusing a beautiful understanding of roots music, he creates dynamic new songs with nothing but a banjo and a clear, clever voice. Luedecke’s easygoing openness and inter-song musings make him a favourite son in his adopted home of Chester, Nova Scotia. A songwriter who doesn’t sugarcoat his fears, he’s a thoughtful lyricist that allows his songs to carry the fresh breeze of bittersweet hopefulness.

“I am running like everyone else. Laughing just to keep from crying. I am always trying to Thursday, February 28, 2013 find a way to express.  7:30 pm I am a prisoner for my appreciation for language; language that moves me is language that is unusual. I feel like it’s an important thing I can contribute to songwriting.” – Old Man Luedecke The award-winning roots singer-songwriter’s latest and fifth album, Tender Is The Night, muses on love, art and purpose, pushing the boundaries of his storytelling with his unique mix of folk, bluegrass and pop hooks. Dedicated to his 18-month old identical twin daughters, this album gives nod to F.R. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel and holds many literary references from Herman Melville, Thom Paine, and Aesop’s Fable; thus a collection of songs artfully crafted and affectionately performed. Recorded live in Nashville at The Butcher Shoppe in only four days, Tender Is The Night follows up Juno awardwinning albums My Hands Are On Fire and Proof of Love.

Friday, March 8, 2013  7:30 pm To hear this ensemble live is to be taken back to the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris in the 1930s. The Hot Club of San Francisco breathes new life into gypsy jazz with their inimitable style reminiscent of Django Reinhardt and The Hot Club of France. With a sophisticated and flamboyant, yet sentimental quality, this collective keeps this historic genre of music fresh and alive with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions. The cool and classy era of silent film just got hot in this special cinematic presentation of rare and delightful classic films from roughly the same Django Reinhardt era, accompanied by vintage gypsy sounds. The innovative storytelling and animation of film pioneers Ladislaw Starewicz and Charlie Bowers shine through in films The Cameraman’s Revenge, There It Is, and The Mascot. In reviving this long lost form of entertainment, The Hot Club’s impressive abilities and musical sensitivity in being able to bring each film’s action to aural life with their perfectly timed accompaniment makes for a sumptuous and sophisticated night out. sponsored by

harry manx Friday, March 15, 2013  7:30 pm A prolific artist, releasing 11 albums over the course of one decade, Harry Manx is known for his unique and captivating sound that weds the tradition of the blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. His signature ability to create musical short stories linking East and West, has garnered him six Juno nominations, seven Maple Blues Awards, Canadian Folk Award for Best Solo Artist in 2005, and Great Canadian Blues Award in 2007. Although Manx doesn’t consider himself to be a blues artist per se, he does admit that blues is at the heart of much of his work.

“While most musicians are content to work within the accepted boundaries of their chosen style, lap-slide guitarist Harry Manx likes to colour way outside the lines. His crayons? Soulful, raspy vocals, poetic lyrics, and the whining drones and mysterious melisma of Indian music… Manx conjures songs that are as bewitching as they are unique.” – Guitar Player Magazine Whether he is playing his signature 20-string Mohan Veena, lap steel guitar, harmonica, stomp box or banjo, Harry Manx’s unique “mysticssippi” sound pushes the boundaries of traditional ragas and sound structures. His Indo-blues hybrid of deceptively complex music patterns, blended with the intimate, quiet warmth of his voice, makes his show a mesmerizing experience. In live settings, the bridge between “heavenly” India and “earthy” American blues is most effectively built by this incredible talent.
