Message from the Mayor Immerse yourself in a kaleidoscope of art and culture at the Arden Theatre. Colourful sounds, vibrant sights, and diverse artists of all forms blend to ignite a rich season of entertainment on the Arden stage in its 2014-2015 season. Every performance, every artist, every lyric to a song, leaves each one of our patrons with a singularly unique and memorable experience, which is a truly special offering that we take pride in. In early 2014, St. Albert was named the #1 place to live in Canada according to MoneySense magazine. One of many contributing factors to this honour is our city’s emphasis on cultural expression through the arts. For 31 years, the Arden Theatre has been at the very root of cultivating opportunities for individuals of all ages and demographics to escape into a valued world of artistic experiences. Ever-evolving musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world share their art in our theatre, engaging our audiences in unforgettable moments. Our stage. Your experience. Thank you for giving us many occasions this season to invite you to be engaged and entertained.

Nolan Crouse Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City

Message from the presenter There is nothing quite like the anticipation of waiting for a show to begin: the lights dim, a hush falls over the crowd and everyone eagerly waits for the first note of a song or the performer to appear. The energy is electric, and then the show begins... Some of the most memorable moments of my life have taken place in performing arts venues. I delight in the cultural events that engage all of my senses and transport me to another place. I distinctly remember the performances that have had me so mesmerized I’ve forgotten to breathe, the hair on my arms stood up on end and my fingers and toes began to tingle. These are experiences that cannot be duplicated and the moments I keep in the back of my mind when programming each Arden season. As I start to assemble each season, I think about the experiences I want you, our patrons, to have in the theatre, how each performer will engage with you, and how, for even just the briefest moments, you can escape the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life. I hope that this season you embrace all of the exciting performances we have lined up for you and allow yourself to be moved by the incredible world of art and culture at the Arden.

marc cohn Tuesday, January 27 \ 7:30 pm After winning a Grammy for his soulful ballad “Walking in Memphis”, Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation’s most compelling singer/songwriters, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. He’s a natural storyteller, balancing the exuberant with the poignant, and able to distill universal truth out of his often romantic, drawn-from-life tales. About his latest cover album, Listening Booth: 1970, a collection of Cohn’s favourite songs from that year, Rolling Stone said, “Cohn has one of rock’s most soulful croons – a rich immediately recognizable tenor that makes these songs his own.” Cohn followed up his platinum-selling debut with two more releases in the 1990s, at which point TIME magazine called him “one of the honest, emotional voices we need in this decade” and Bonnie Raitt declared, “Marc is one of the most soulful, talented artists I know. I love his songs, he’s an incredible singer, and I marvel at his ability to mesmerize every audience he plays for.” In 1998, Cohn took a decade-long sabbatical from recording, ending in 2007 with Join The Parade, an album inspired by the horrific events following Hurricane Katrina and his own near fatal shooting just weeks before.

Little time or appetite to make the change

School site swap not very likely BY peter Boer Staff Writer A suggestion that could see St. Albert’s newest elementary school built in Kingswood instead of Erin Ridge North appears to be a non-starter. At Monday’s city council meeting Coun. Cam MacKay asked administration to explore an idea first put forward by council candidate Sheena Hughes – move the elementary school Cam announced by the maCkay province last month Councilor from Erin Ridge North to Kingswood, then move the francophone high school pegged for construction at Eldorado Drive to Erin Ridge North. Such a move, said Hughes, would address concerns of Erin Ridge sheena residents about the hughes size of the high school Candidate compared to the area of the school site, and worries about heavy vehicle traffic and parking at the Eldorado site. “I just tried to think of some kind of solution,” said Hughes. “It just occurred to me this is an alternative.” The city doesn’t have title to the site Hughes is suggesting it explore. The land in Kingswood has long been at the centre of an ongoing dispute between developer Canterra and the city. Canterra is supposed to hand the land over to the city but will only do so if the city guarantees a high school won’t be built on the site. President Murray Brown has been previously quoted as saying high school students don’t make good neighbours. The city has said it will not issue any development permits to Canterra until it hands over the land. This kind of swap could finally bring some peace to the ongoing dispute, Hughes said. See “School site,” page 4

WILD WEATHER – A large storm cloud passes over a field of canola northwest of St. Albert on Monday as a stretch of cold, rainy weather finally subsides, making way for hotter temperatures this week.

City reviewing flood plain maps BY peter Boer Staff Writer

The city will have another look at its flood plain data for the sake of caution but is confident little will need to change in the wake of the province’s policy change on housing development within flood areas. The province announced Sunday anyone who builds or rebuilds within identified 1:100 year flood plains in Alberta will not qualify for disaster relief in the event of a flood. The changes come on the heels of massive flooding last month in southern Alberta that has left many homes uninhabitable. Stephen Khan, St. Albert’s

MLA, confirmed Thursday that policy change is province wide, not just for those areas that recently flooded. “The premier is very clear that the policy is not just for the area in southern Alberta. It’s a policy for all of Alberta moving into the future,” Khan said. But city officials maintain the policy change should have very little impact on St. Albert. As the rules currently stand, building anything in St. Albert’s flood plain is forbidden. “It’s pretty clear in the land use bylaw that it is prohibited,” said Carol Bergum, the city’s senior long-range planner. It does allow for some structures such as util-

ity infrastructure or temporary outdoor shelters, but that’s about all, she added. Bergum said the city is looking at its flood plain mapping

and also reviewing maps in the province’s possession to make sure both are as up to date as possible. See “Flood plan,” page 4

WATER WORRIES – The RiverHouse Restaurant and several other buildings in that area are described as below the flood line. The city says no other flood risk areas exist in St. Albert.

david francey Friday, February 6 \ 7:30 pm Carpenter turned songwriter David Francey sings the stories of real people and real places. As one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers, David’s openhearted lyricism and honesty has earned the musician multiple Juno Awards, the prestigious SOCAN Folk Music Award, as well as taking home the Grand Prize in both the International Acoustic Music Award and in the Folk category for the John Lennon Songwriting Award.

“... David Francey is known as one of Canada’s finest tunesmiths and a champion of the Everyman, admired for his less-is-more approach to writing. It’s amazing how he manages to address deep stuff with such spare ingredients.” – The Edmonton Journal The troubadour’s keen eye for the heart of the matter packs an emotional punch in his beautifully crafted and superbly played music. His tenth album, So Say We All, unlocks the magic hidden in the ordinary in its brilliantly minimalistic collection of songs. Capturing the dark times as well as life’s shining moments, the album is a perfect acoustic showcase of what makes Francey’s song writing so special. Poetic and fearless, David Francey draws from his own experiences and sings about his colourful experiences on the road. Guests are invited to attend a free pre-show coffee tasting beginning at 6:30 pm, courtesy of Heavenly Grounds Coffee.

royal wood Friday, February 13 & Saturday, February 14 \ 7:30 pm Sometimes in order to really find yourself, you have to lose yourself. Just ask Royal Wood, whose latest record, the breathtakingly poignant The Burning Bright, captures his truest, most confident musical voice even as it chronicles an extraordinary year of tumult, travel and personal discovery. Wood’s charttopping 2012 release, the JUNO nominated We Were Born to Glory, firmly established him as one of Canada’s most accomplished alt-pop singer/ songwriters, producers, arrangers and multi-instrumentalists.

“To be honest, the stakes felt higher on the last album. This time, I finally made the decision to simply make art again for the sake of making art. It is its own reward and what happens next is just a part of the journey in making it.” – Royal Wood Bringing class and craft to his pop-rock stylings, this singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s candour of lyrics and virtuosity is ever astonishing, revealing a deeper, more introspective side than we’ve ever heard before. Royal Wood returns to the Arden stage on Valentine’s Day weekend, after an incredible sold-out performance in January 2014.

brent butt With Opening Guest Jamie Hutchinson Wednesday, February 18 \ 7:30 pm Off the heels of the recent release of Corner Gas: The Movie, comedian, actor, writer and director Brent Butt returns to the Arden stage for one laugh out loud night of hilarity. Not your typical overnight sensation, Brent Butt’s popularity has grown from years of hard work, honing his comedic chops on multiple tours, festivals and TV special appearances. His signature brand of humour quickly gave him the reputation of an “everyman” comedian. His tours were sold out, and the offers for TV were rolling in. It is that very question that led to the phenomenon that was Corner Gas. Creating, writing, producing, starring and directing the hit phenomenon Corner Gas, earned him numerous accolades, including an International Emmy Award nomination. Since his days in the prairie town of Dog River, Saskatchewan, Brent has starred in Hiccups, released his first feature film entitled No Clue, and has resumed his stand-up comedy touring. Brent has also been honoured for his many individual achievements, including being presented with the Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award in 2008, and being honoured with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013. There is little doubt the future holds many untold achievements for one of Canada’s brightest stars.

JOHN McEUEN & JOHN CARTER CASH Will the Circle Be Unbroken: A Tribute to the Carter Family Thursday, February 19 \ 7:30 pm When the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band recorded their flagship 1972 release Will the Circle Be Unbroken with an elite group of bluegrass and country music legends – “Mother” Maybelle Carter, Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, Merle Travis and Earl Scruggs – they never anticipated the extraordinary success and cross-generational appeal it would have. This multimedia concert event takes the audience down the path of two driving forces in American Music – The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB) and the music of The Carter Family. The collection of Carter Family music is recognized as a classic American Music form, and NGDB co-founder John McEuen is eager to share the stories and memories that sprouted during its creation. Joining forces with John Carter Cash and family, the group transports audiences back to that magical period in time through a multi-media show that features historic personal photographs and enthusiastic narrative. With bluegrass, country, gospel, and the roots of America’s music, the treasure trove of songs from all the albums’ artists are performed by the ensemble, ending with all joining in for the classic Will the Circle Be Unbroken.

les yeux noirs Friday, February 27 \ 7:30 pm For twelve years, Les Yeux Noirs (Black Eyes) have been carving their own path down the road of Yiddish and Gypsy music, supported by an evergrowing audience. Fronted by violin-wielding brothers Eric and Olivier Slabiak, Les Yeux Noirs embraces a wide-ranging mix of cultural influences as the root of their unclassifiable sound. The band invites audiences to share in moments of intense emotion and indescribable joy, as they weave their magic with extraordinary energy. Both joyous and nostalgic, their nomadic music has kept the musical tradition of the Slabiak family alive for over 20 years. With equal parts gypsy, Klezmer and plenty of jazz-rock inspiration, the music of Les Yeux Noirs is not for the faint at heart. Soaked in Eastern European and Yiddish flavours, Les Yeux Noirs’ exhilarating rhythms stir up a flurry of activity into a thrilling musical journey. Their fervent energy and love of sharing brings people of all different backgrounds together through their colourful stories about other worlds.
