ROOTS/POP/ROCK Friday, January 18 • 7:30 PM • $29 When Canadian musicians start talking about guitar players, Joey

Landreth’s name will make its way into the conversation in short order. The Winnipeg musician, who has enjoyed a great run as a member of The Brothers Landreth, has a reputation that stretches nationwide. Last year, he stepped out alone with the release of his debut solo album Whiskey, which defines what a solo project should be. The second part of this one-two punch of prairie roots rock comes from Altameda. The four-piece group from St. Albert that turned heads with their 2016 release Dirty Rain is set to release their follow-up, Time Hasn’t Changed You in March 2019 – a further showcase of the band’s bluesy rhythms and nostalgia-laden lyrics. The new album was produced by Aaron Goldstein, producer for artists such as City & Colour, Daniel Romano and Kathleen Edwards.

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. Cathy&Jones Bruce McCulloch COMEDY Tuesday, January 22 • 7:30 PM • $41

Cathy Jones Just when you thought life might not be so funny anymore, Cathy Jones hits the stage with her signature brand of gender-bending, side-splitting comedy straight from the depths of her mind. Fresh off the heels of her hilarious one-woman show, Stranger to Hard Work, she is back with the best medicine that can be prescribed for a challenging world, The Impossible Cathy Jones Rides Again.

Bruce McCulloch Tales of Bravery and Stupidity is a one-man show that is funny and at times touching. Part stand-up, part storytelling, the show looks at some of the bravely stupid things that Bruce has done, and things we all do as we get ourselves in and out of trouble navigating our way through life. Bruce McCulloch has written or performed several one-man shows and is a member of the iconic comedy troupe, The Kids in the Hall.

Working from a repertoire in the neighbourhood of 400 original songs, Loudon Wainwright III is one of the most consistent artists of his generation. However, Wainwright’s definition of consistency comes with a number of connotations. He has never been far from his muse, and his deep well of song has triggered every kind of response imaginable because of the sweeping spectrum of topics he has addressed throughout the years. His autobiographical forays into the world of relationships, his takes on the malaise at the core of urban North American life, and his lethal swipes at the state of the union, are coupled with his sly sense of humour that inspires a hearty laugh at one turn and a collective awkward silence the next. Wainwright’s discography boasts critics’ favorites from every chapter of his career. I’m Alright, Last Man On Earth, 10 Songs for the New Depression and Older Than My Old Man are just a few of his superb efforts. In 2010 he won a Grammy Award for High Wide and Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project, and two years ago his book Liner Notes: On Parents & Children, Exes & Excess, Death & Decay, & a Few of My Other Favorite Things received rave reviews. Most recently, Wainwright could be seen on Netflix with his special Surviving Twin.

Kinan Azmeh CityBand

JAZZ/WORLD/CLASSICAL Saturday, February 9 • 7:30 PM • $42

There are very few artists traveling the world that have as complete a

resume as that of Kinan Azmeh. In fact, his story and life’s journey in music is nothing short of remarkable for an individual who is only 42 years of age. Leading his CityBand is only one of many achievements that continue to impress his peers. Azmeh has played with the New York and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestras and has been a featured soloist at both The Kennedy Centre and the Tchaikovsky Grand Hall in Moscow. This virtuoso clarinetist is not only a brilliant performer, but also an accomplished academic with his achievements beautifully complementing his performing career. A graduate of New York’s Juilliard as well as both the Damascus High Institute of Music and The University of Damascus’ School of Electrical Engineering in his native Syria, Kinan also earned his doctorate degree in music from the City University of New York. As for CityBand, Azmeh formed the group 12 years ago and time and time again reviewers have remarked on the captivating stage presence of the group, which is coupled with sophisticated improvisation. In terms of recorded work, there are many albums that capture the beauty of Azmeh’s gifts, but none as much as 2016’s Levanter or the Grammy Award-winning Silk Road Ensemble album Sing Me Home – of which he is a featured member alongside Yo-Yo Ma.
