What a pleasure it is to be back at The Arden Theatre! I’d like to send a huge thanks to Neil LeGrandeur for doing such an excellent job programming a season that truly is Yours To Discover. Over the past year, I’ve made some discoveries of my own, many I never thought possible, as I embarked on an exciting new adventure – motherhood. However, one of my best discoveries was how much I missed the theatre and all of you! We have lots to catch up on and I can’t wait to hear about the artistic endeavours you’ve made over the past year and performances you’d like to see on our stage next season. Find me in the lobby or send an email to cnorth@stalbert.ca with your suggestions because The Arden Theatre is Yours to Discover. Caitlin North Professional Programming Presenter, Cultural Services, City of St. Albert We wish to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as the other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupied this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory.
calvin Vollrath TRADITIONAL | FOLK
Thursday, January 11, 2018 | 2 PM | $15 St. Albert Community Hall Calvin Vollrath is an Alberta-born, world-renowned fiddler. The fiddle has been a focal point in his life since childhood. His father, Art “Lefty” Vollrath, had a reputation as a skilled fiddle player, and as a young boy, Calvin imitated his father’s moves with two butter knives. Calvin received his first fiddle when he was eight years old, and his innate talents were immediately evident. Since winning his first contest at 13, he has won two Grand North American Fiddle Championships and been awarded many other accolades including his 2011 induction into the North American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame. Vollrath is also a gifted composer. He has created over 600 fiddle songs, many of which are now standard contest pieces. Calvin was commissioned to compose five fiddle tunes for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies; each represented a fiddling style from across Canada. Vollrath’s engaging performances showcase high-speed jigs, shimmering waltzes and slow, beautiful numbers. Many of his tunes are imbued with classical European influences. Others are played in the Métis style, with unusual measures, offbeat accents and uncomplicated harmonic progressions. No matter the style, when alone onstage, Vollrath captivates his audience with the ease of a true virtuoso.
“Vollrath makes a fiddle talk as few others can.” – Peter North, Edmonton Journal

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. lisa loeb POP | FOLK
Friday, January 12 | 7:30 PM | $42
Trailblazing singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb’s career began in 1994 with a music first — the emotion-driven pop single “Stay (I Missed You),” from the film Reality Bites, went platinum before she even had a record contract. The song, created with the band Nine Stories, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Later that year, Geffen Records signed the group; they released their debut album Tails in 1995. Since then, Loeb has explored many musical directions as a solo artist. She has recorded a series of children’s albums and albums for adult audiences. She co-wrote lyrics and music for the acclaimed 2015 off-Broadway musical, Camp Kappawanna, based on her own memories of summer camp. Lullaby Girl, Loeb’s current album, was released in October 2017. It features two original tunes as well as cover songs that she presents in her own style with novel arrangements. Loeb says the album, which appeals to many generations and bridges eras and styles, was inspired by saying goodnight to her daughter over the phone while working in Nashville. Loeb makes her debut at The Arden Theatre with a repertoire of catchy pop and folk songs infused with her signature intelligence and wit.
“Loeb has an undeniable gift for creating an air of intimacy and vulnerability.” 12

Saturday, February 3 | 7:30 PM | $45 Forget the CIA. Frank Warren is probably the world’s best keeper of
secrets. His PostSecret project, where strangers anonymously mail their private thoughts on postcards, transformed a community art idea into an international cultural phenomenon. Warren started his endeavour in November 2004 as a safe, non-judgemental place for people to share their secrets. Since then, he has received over a million secrets that are both comic and tragic; together they reveal shocking confessions, stunning acts of kindness and the vast array of human emotion. Forbes Media has recognized Warren as one of the five most influential people on the internet. With nearly 800 million views — and growing— his PostSecret website is the largest advertisement-free blog in the world. His inspiring Ted Talk has been viewed more than two million times. In 2013, Warren was invited to the White House, and from August 2015 to January 2018, America’s National Postal Museum in Washington, DC, presented a feature PostSecret exhibit. His six books about the project have all made the New York Times bestseller list. This evening Warren will share a hand-picked collection of the secrets along with what he’s learned about humanity and the full, complicated range of our hidden lives.

Named one of the 100 greatest living songwriters by Paste Magazine, Josh Ritter is a master storyteller-musician whose lyrics have an evocative poetic quality. He spins stories of struggle and redemption against a backdrop of rustic Americana and animated rock ‘n’ roll. His songs can feel as intimate as a confession or as universal as a stadium anthem, and he transitions between them seamlessly. Born and raised in Moscow, Idaho, Ritter bought his first guitar at Kmart the day after listening to a Bob Dylan album at 17. He went to college planning to study neuroscience like his parents, but instead discovered music was where he belonged. On Ritter’s 2017 album, Gathering, he aptly mixes country and rock with a hint of gospel, creating a dynamic blend of fast-paced barnburners and slow, soulful songs. The ballad “When Will I Be Changed” is a rich instrumentation-infused duet with the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir. Their musical collaboration, which extends to Weir’s 2016 album, has brought a renewed energy to Ritter’s music. Ritter brings his signature sound to enthralled audiences across Europe and North America, including here at The Arden Theatre. His sound — often compared to masters Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, yet uniquely his own — is so captivating that it deserves two shows.
“Ritter has achieved the near impossible, fully reimagining his own art while still holding close to what’s always made him special.”

Saturday, March 3 | 7:30 PM | $38
In 2017, The East Pointers won the Juno Award for Traditional Album of the Year for their debut, Secret Victory. The band connects folk music’s storied past with its invigorated present. Their second album, What We Leave Behind, echoes the origins and traditions of Canadian Celtic music, while stretching its sounds in contemporary directions. Fiddler and singer Tim Chaisson, banjoist Koady Chaisson and guitarist Jake Charron were accomplished musicians on their own before they teamed up. The Chaissons are cousins from P.E.I. who grew up surrounded by music — their family includes well-known fiddlers and folk musicians. Charron, from Ontario, has played with award-winning performers from around the world. Before they formally became a group in 2014, the trio often played together during late-night kitchen parties. Together, The East Pointers write with depth and authenticity about real life and all its highs and lows, crafting joyful folk songs and foot-stomping instrumentals with a distinctly Maritime flavour. The East Pointers reach out to embrace diverse listeners, and their energetic show features songs that will make you want to raise a pint or dance a jig.
