Before beginning my work here at the Arden Theatre, I was a long time patron of this venue, attending countless performances with my family throughout the majority of my life. message from the

Minister of Culture As Minister of Culture, it is my great pleasure to welcome everyone to the 30th anniversary season of the Arden Theatre. Another season at the Arden means another invitation to the people of St. Albert and the whole capital region to welcome, and to share, a world of great performance. How many lives have been touched by brilliance here, over thirty years? How many moments of enchantment have been shared, how many ordinary evenings have been turned into magic, how many artistic dreams have been given the push they needed to become reality? We cannot know for sure, but each of us in these seats cherishes the personal and collective treasure that has built up here over three decades, and promises to do so, we hope, for evermore. The Government of Alberta is pleased to help support the Arden Theatre through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. My thanks to the City of St. Albert, the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society and especially the audience, for helping to build this cultural treasure. Whether this is your first time at the Arden or you have made your contribution throughout the past thirty years, you are an indispensable part of the magic.

The Honourable Heather Klimchuk Minister of Culture and Community Services MLA, Edmonton-Glenora

Martyn Joseph Friday, March 28

|

7:30 pm

Welsh singer-songwriter Martyn Joseph’s ability to transcend preconceptions about how one man and a guitar can sound is testament to his talent and stage presence. His performances are intelligently constructed, and present the audience with challenging narratives and an intensity that hits with the power of a right hook. There is versatility to Martyn’s music that is hard to categorise. Many have tried, resulting in labels such as Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark. But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures, and stories, and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman.

“... suspended folk chords glistening beneath troubadour tales, his lyrical eloquence still inspired almost 30 years on from his debut.” – MOJO

Little time or appetite to make the change

School site swap not very likely BY peter Boer Staff Writer A suggestion that could see St. Albert’s newest elementary school built in Kingswood instead of Erin Ridge North appears to be a non-starter. At Monday’s city council meeting Coun. Cam MacKay asked administration to explore an idea first put forward by council candidate Sheena Hughes – move the elementary school Cam announced by the maCkay province last month Councilor from Erin Ridge North to Kingswood, then move the francophone high school pegged for construction at Eldorado Drive to Erin Ridge North. Such a move, said Hughes, would address concerns of Erin Ridge sheena residents about the hughes size of the high school Candidate compared to the area of the school site, and worries about heavy vehicle traffic and parking at the Eldorado site. “I just tried to think of some kind of solution,” said Hughes. “It just occurred to me this is an alternative.” The city doesn’t have title to the site Hughes is suggesting it explore. The land in Kingswood has long been at the centre of an ongoing dispute between developer Canterra and the city. Canterra is supposed to hand the land over to the city but will only do so if the city guarantees a high school won’t be built on the site. President Murray Brown has been previously quoted as saying high school students don’t make good neighbours. The city has said it will not issue any development permits to Canterra until it hands over the land. This kind of swap could finally bring some peace to the ongoing dispute, Hughes said. See “School site,” page 4

WILD WEATHER – A large storm cloud passes over a field of canola northwest of St. Albert on Monday as a stretch of cold, rainy weather finally subsides, making way for hotter temperatures this week.

City reviewing flood plain maps BY peter Boer Staff Writer

The city will have another look at its flood plain data for the sake of caution but is confident little will need to change in the wake of the province’s policy change on housing development within flood areas. The province announced Sunday anyone who builds or rebuilds within identified 1:100 year flood plains in Alberta will not qualify for disaster relief in the event of a flood. The changes come on the heels of massive flooding last month in southern Alberta that has left many homes uninhabitable. Stephen Khan, St. Albert’s

MLA, confirmed Thursday that policy change is province wide, not just for those areas that recently flooded. “The premier is very clear that the policy is not just for the area in southern Alberta. It’s a policy for all of Alberta moving into the future,” Khan said. But city officials maintain the policy change should have very little impact on St. Albert. As the rules currently stand, building anything in St. Albert’s flood plain is forbidden. “It’s pretty clear in the land use bylaw that it is prohibited,” said Carol Bergum, the city’s senior long-range planner. It does allow for some structures such as util-

ity infrastructure or temporary outdoor shelters, but that’s about all, she added. Bergum said the city is looking at its flood plain mapping

and also reviewing maps in the province’s possession to make sure both are as up to date as possible. See “Flood plan,” page 4

ApRIL BARtLEtt/St. Albert Gazette

WATER WORRIES – The RiverHouse Restaurant and several other buildings in that area are described as below the flood line. The city says no other flood risk areas exist in St. Albert.

Battlefield Band Saturday, March 29

|

7:30 pm

Battlefield Band’s aptitude for instrumental colour, nuance, expression and internal dynamics is, if anything, sharper than ever. Fiery instrumentals, plaintive ballads and songs of social history find them fresh, invigorated, and illustrate yet again that they are among the most relevant contemporary composers and interpreters of Celtic music today, capable even of adding a Scottish twist to an Otis Redding soul classic.

“...musicianship of the highest level, rightly confirming Battlefield Band in the top ten folk bands of the world...” – Kieler Nachrichten

A bedrock of talent for over four decades, Battlefield Band is firmly in command of their art, while ever moving forward with great acclaim for their musical development. In this evening’s performance, you’ll hear music from their new album, Room Enough For All, which was awarded ‘Album Of The Year’ at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards 2013. Battlefield Band are honoured to have now been recognised by the awards for a third time in the band’s 45 year history, having previously been awarded ‘Best Live Act’ at the inaugural awards ceremony in 2003 and ‘Scottish Folk Band of the Year’ in 2011.

Maria Dunn & John Wort Hannam Saturday, April 5

|

7:30 pm

Edmonton-based, Juno-nominated songwriter Maria Dunn draws deeply on the folk tradition of storytelling through song. A true preserver of the spirit of folk music, she is often compared to Woody Guthrie for her keen social awareness and her unvarnished songs about the lives of working men and women. Maria’s fifth album, Piece By Piece, pays tribute to women working at a historical Edmonton garment factory.

“When you get people talking about the important experiences in their lives, there is so much poetry and eloquence that comes out if you’re really listening, so it made it easy to get inspired to write these songs.” – Maria Dunn In only 10 years, Fort MacLeod’s John Wort Hannam has captured a Juno nomination for Best Traditional/Roots album, and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Album of the Year. He is a powerful singer with rootsy, melodic songs, matched with a narrative writing style, laden with lyrical hooks. John’s new release, Brambles and Thorns, showcases his exceptional skill as a wordsmith.

“Like Tom Russell, Hannam’s narrative, achingly resilient writing

approach hooks the listener immediately. The real deal.” – Shindig UK Sponsored by

Darrell Scott & Tim O’ Brien Wednesday, April 23

|

7:30 pm

Outstanding country and Americana songwriters and instrumentalists, each revered for their mile-long accolades as soloists and collaborators, have an undeniable synergy that explodes when the duo performs together. Darrell Scott and Tim O’Brien close the Arden’s 30th Anniversary season with unbridled confidence and vigour.

“Our strength is playing in the moment... with us across from each

other, leaking into each other’s mics, there’s an immediacy to it that translates to the listener. That’s our hope, anyway.” – Darrell Scott

Darrell and Tim recently reunited for their latest collaboration, the long-awaited Memories & Moments, which picks up where Grammy-nominated Real Time left off. Built from new solo material, a co-write and a few covers, shows how empathetic each is to the other’s instrumental and vocal traits. They have an intimacy that only performing together for years can achieve – the perfect combination of acoustic virtuosity and camaraderie. Sponsored by

Spotlight on C17 With the Arden Theatre’s recent renovations we launched the Take a Seat campaign, encouraging patrons to sponsor a seat, but with a twist. Everyone has their favourite seat, and we’re learning that every seat has a story. When Mike Canton sponsored a seat in the memory of Singer-songwriter Gaye Delorme, we were curious what it was about this artist that inspired Mike to honour his memory. “As a long term patron of The Arden and as a fan and friend to Gaye Delorme, I thought purchasing a seat was a great way to pay respect to Gaye’s legacy and support one of my favourite venues. I specifically chose the seat C17 as it is the centre seat in a row that allows you to be close enough to enjoy and appreciate every move of the performer. Gaye was one of those performers where you could see emotion behind every note of his incredible guitar playing. I met Gaye when he moved back to Edmonton and enjoyed an all-too-brief friendship with him before he passed away in June 2011. He was a warm, sincere and funny guy, with an abundance of talent and a wealth of experiences, stories and jokes to share. His fans, family, and friends remember him fondly and miss him dearly. Rest in Peace Gaye. We all love you!” What are YOU waiting for?
