for everything!
Message from the Mayor Immerse yourself in a kaleidoscope of art and culture at the Arden Theatre. Colourful sounds, vibrant sights, and diverse artists of all forms blend to ignite a rich season of entertainment on the Arden stage in its 2014-2015 season. Every performance, every artist, every lyric to a song, leaves each one of our patrons with a singularly unique and memorable experience, which is a truly special offering that we take pride in. In early 2014, St. Albert was named the #1 place to live in Canada according to MoneySense magazine. One of many contributing factors to this honour is our city’s emphasis on cultural expression through the arts. For 31 years, the Arden Theatre has been at the very root of cultivating opportunities for individuals of all ages and demographics to escape into a valued world of artistic experiences. Ever-evolving musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world share their art in our theatre, engaging our audiences in unforgettable moments. Our stage. Your experience. Thank you for giving us many occasions this season to invite you to be engaged and entertained.
Nolan Crouse Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City
Message from the presenter There is nothing quite like the anticipation of waiting for a show to begin: the lights dim, a hush falls over the crowd and everyone eagerly waits for the first note of a song or the performer to appear. The energy is electric, and then the show begins... Some of the most memorable moments of my life have taken place in performing arts venues. I delight in the cultural events that engage all of my senses and transport me to another place. I distinctly remember the performances that have had me so mesmerized I’ve forgotten to breathe, the hair on my arms stood up on end and my fingers and toes began to tingle. These are experiences that cannot be duplicated and the moments I keep in the back of my mind when programming each Arden season. As I start to assemble each season, I think about the experiences I want you, our patrons, to have in the theatre, how each performer will engage with you, and how, for even just the briefest moments, you can escape the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life. I hope that this season you embrace all of the exciting performances we have lined up for you and allow yourself to be moved by the incredible world of art and culture at the Arden.

SING-a-LoNG-a GreaSe Friday, March 6 \ 7:30 pm Ever had the uncontrollable urge to burst into song? Always wanted to know what it’s like to be a T-bird or a Pink Lady? Well, now is your chance to don some leather, grease up those quiffs and let your inhibitions go for an evening where you are the lead character! From the producers of Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music, comes a brand new Sing-a-long-a version of the classic film, Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The world-famous Sing-a-long-a format has been delighting audiences since 1999. In this fully interactive evening, watch Danny & Sandy and the gang while singing and dancing along to the lyrics as shown on the screen. Every performance starts with a Sing-a-long-a host who warms up the audience and trains them how to “hand-jive” before putting to use a fun pack of special props for the “magic moments” that make the evening so entertaining. Don’t forget to pull out those poodle skirts and black leather bomber jackets – dressing up is strongly encouraged and audience participation is essential!

DeLhI 2 DUbLIN Saturday, March 7 \ 7:30 pm Plug into this high-energy, multi-cultural music experience where originality and evolution meet. Pegged as the “United Nations of Rock ‘n’ Roll”, Delhi 2 Dublin has become one of Canada’s most buzzed-about bands, continuing to make a powerful statement on the global stage with their genre-bending blend of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub Reggae and Electronica. Challenging the definition of urban music, these road warriors are transcending stereotypes and creating their own niche at the intersection of where east meets west.
“The Vancouver-based collective combines dhol, fiddle and breakbeats in an Irish/Asian stew that is surprisingly varied, a marvellously wide-ranging and free-thinking concept.” – BBC Releasing their first full-length album within a year of their inception in 2006, it was obvious Delhi 2 Dublin had something people wanted. Word spread about their wildly energetic live show, and tours grew from regular jaunts across North America to include festival performances in Europe, Asia and Australia. The band kept up with the pace, producing a new album bi-annually and a remix album alternating years. With seven albums out, 2014 had Delhi 2 Dublin releasing their very first, and much anticipated, LIVE album, recorded at the iconic Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC on their 8th birthday.

Little time or appetite to make the change
School site swap not very likely BY peter Boer Staff Writer A suggestion that could see St. Albert’s newest elementary school built in Kingswood instead of Erin Ridge North appears to be a non-starter. At Monday’s city council meeting Coun. Cam MacKay asked administration to explore an idea first put forward by council candidate Sheena Hughes – move the elementary school Cam announced by the maCkay province last month Councilor from Erin Ridge North to Kingswood, then move the francophone high school pegged for construction at Eldorado Drive to Erin Ridge North. Such a move, said Hughes, would address concerns of Erin Ridge sheena residents about the hughes size of the high school Candidate compared to the area of the school site, and worries about heavy vehicle traffic and parking at the Eldorado site. “I just tried to think of some kind of solution,” said Hughes. “It just occurred to me this is an alternative.” The city doesn’t have title to the site Hughes is suggesting it explore. The land in Kingswood has long been at the centre of an ongoing dispute between developer Canterra and the city. Canterra is supposed to hand the land over to the city but will only do so if the city guarantees a high school won’t be built on the site. President Murray Brown has been previously quoted as saying high school students don’t make good neighbours. The city has said it will not issue any development permits to Canterra until it hands over the land. This kind of swap could finally bring some peace to the ongoing dispute, Hughes said. See “School site,” page 4

WILD WEATHER – A large storm cloud passes over a field of canola northwest of St. Albert on Monday as a stretch of cold, rainy weather finally subsides, making way for hotter temperatures this week.
City reviewing flood plain maps BY peter Boer Staff Writer
The city will have another look at its flood plain data for the sake of caution but is confident little will need to change in the wake of the province’s policy change on housing development within flood areas. The province announced Sunday anyone who builds or rebuilds within identified 1:100 year flood plains in Alberta will not qualify for disaster relief in the event of a flood. The changes come on the heels of massive flooding last month in southern Alberta that has left many homes uninhabitable. Stephen Khan, St. Albert’s
MLA, confirmed Thursday that policy change is province wide, not just for those areas that recently flooded. “The premier is very clear that the policy is not just for the area in southern Alberta. It’s a policy for all of Alberta moving into the future,” Khan said. But city officials maintain the policy change should have very little impact on St. Albert. As the rules currently stand, building anything in St. Albert’s flood plain is forbidden. “It’s pretty clear in the land use bylaw that it is prohibited,” said Carol Bergum, the city’s senior long-range planner. It does allow for some structures such as util-
ity infrastructure or temporary outdoor shelters, but that’s about all, she added. Bergum said the city is looking at its flood plain mapping
and also reviewing maps in the province’s possession to make sure both are as up to date as possible. See “Flood plan,” page 4
ApRIL BARtLEtt/St. Albert Gazette
WATER WORRIES – The RiverHouse Restaurant and several other buildings in that area are described as below the flood line. The city says no other flood risk areas exist in St. Albert.

altan Tuesday, March 17 \ 7:30 pm In the last dozen years, no traditional Irish band has had a wider impact on audiences and music lovers throughout the world than Altan. They have moved audiences from Donegal to Tokyo to Seattle with their heartwarming, dynamic live performances and with their exquisitely produced, award-winning recordings that range from the most touching old Irish songs to hard-hitting reels and jigs. Throughout their career, Altan has shown unwavering commitment to bringing the beauty of traditional music to contemporary audiences, particularly that of the Donegal fiddlers and singers. On their upcoming new album, The Widening Gyre, Altan explores and celebrates the musical connection between the traditional music of Ireland and the roots and bluegrass music from their across the pond cousin.
“The title The Widening Gyre appeals to us and depicts the spiral of life, widening and embracing the new. It has an innate energy. We think that idea is reflected in the album’s music.” – Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, founding member of Altan After nearly 35 years together – the longest running lineup of founding members in Irish music – the members of Altan were ready to flex their musical boundaries, fusing traditional Irish music that they are known for, namely Donegal fiddling and Gaelic singing traditions, with American roots music, particularly that of the Appalachian bluegrass fiddle. The chance to experience this thirty year-active band is to experience the living legacy of Irish music.

It’s not easy being Green! A makeover project supported by
Kitchen Craft Cabinetry and Floform Countertops Down the back hallway of the Arden Theatre you’ll find the Green Room, used by artists and community groups performing at the theatre. While it’s had a few touch ups over the last 31 years, the room was decidedly shabby with cast off furniture, makeshift kitchen cabinetry and mismatched countertops. Funding is primarily allocated towards productions, hiring actors, and improving public spaces such as the recent upgrades to the Box Office and lobby concession. Backstage areas such as the Green Room are often lower down the list, yet that’s where professional and amateur performers spend a significant amount of time. Looking for support to embark on a Green Room makeover, Cultural Services staff approached Kitchen Craft Cabinetry’s Tracey Lawrysyn and Christie Roy who were on board with design expertise and product donations from the beginning. After visiting the Arden, Tracey commented, “For all of us it was our first visit to the Arden Theatre and I can confidently say we are now amongst your biggest fans! What a beautiful venue, very personal and inviting, and with every seat in the theatre being a fantastic one.” With 40 years experience, Kitchen Craft delivers beautifully designed kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities backed by a commitment to preserving the environment. Kitchen Craft’s precise craftsmanship and project management meant no surprises along the way to having our stunning thermofoil cabinetry manufactured and installed. In keeping with the fresh white Corian® countertops found in the Box Office and concession areas, Floform Countertops’ skilled craftspeople stepped in to fabricate and install Corian® countertops with just the right balance of storage, style and comfort for the makeover.
“The Arden Theatre enriches our audiences with its professional and community performances,” said Cultural Facilities Manager, Adam Mitchell. “For Kitchen Craft and Floform Countertops to have made our dream of a comfortable, welcoming Green Room a reality is just incredible.”

MoNkeYJUNk Friday, April 17 \ 7:30 pm Tenacious, Ottawa-based trio MonkeyJunk aren’t afraid to mess with formula. Their fiery brand of high octane blues-rock and no-holds-barred instrumental attacks is propelling the band into a league all their own. Pegged “the sultans of Swamp R&B” by William Shatner, the band is an exciting name in an often stagnant blues scene.
“We’re growing and we’re exploring. Every era of the blues has seen influential artists change the soundscape of the music and explore different musical possibilities. It’s our job to try to follow in their footsteps.” – MonkeyJunk
MonkeyJunk tunes in to an array of genres with their third album, All Frequencies. Coming in with no static, their strong and confident hybrid of greasy rock ‘n’ roll, swamp blues and uptown funk produces electrified soundscapes that are making waves throughout North America. All Frequencies hit the mark at the 2014 Maple Blues Awards when the band picked up five awards (of six nominations) including Entertainer of the Year, Electric Act of the Year, Recording of the Year, Songwriter(s) of the Year and Harmonica Player of the Year for Steve Marriner.
