Thursday, March 3 • 7:30 pm Few bands can claim to be the iconic group of an entire genre. But The Wailers and reggae are nearly synonymous after five decades touring as the world’s premier reggae and world music group. Together with Bob Marley, the band sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide. And although much has changed in the world since his death 35 years ago, the social issues that reggae music, and Marley and the Wailers most notably, have tackled are still relevant today. While the genre has never stopped evolving, for millions of people reggae music is still defined by the heartbeat rhythms as evidenced by the enduring popularity of the “one drop” reggae sound. Outside of their groundbreaking work with the legendary reggae singer, The Wailers have performed with international acts such as Sting, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer and Burning Spear. Their most recent collaborators include Kenny Chesney, Eve, Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. The Wailers are living legends who embody the nobility, conviction and progressiveness of Marley and his music. Performing over 200 shows a year around the world, the iconic group brings their ever-evolving music forward to a new generation.

Health minister interviewed Alberta’s new health minister gives a rundown of her priorities.. . . . . . .

Did you know that the total area of St. Albert is 4,973 hectares? This and many other points of statistical interest were contained within the city’s 2014 annual report. Council signed off on the report on Monday night. Statistics were available on a myriad of topics, from crime rates to financial information to the number of people who went to the Arden Theatre last year. Here’s a sampling of some of the statistics in the report:

By Kevin Ma Staff Writer The tents are going up on Mission Hill this week as St. Albert’s Catholic schools gear up for the big finish to their 150-year birthday bash. Some 6,000 students from the Greater St. Albert Catholic school district are set to march on Mission Hill Thursday morning for a celebratory mass – the penultimate event in the district’s yearlong celebration of its 150th anniversary. “It was an education system that started very quietly and was responsible for the needs of seven orphan children at the time,” said board superintendent David Keohane. “From those humble beginnings, we’ve seen a school system grow to a size of 6,000 students in three communities.” The mass itself will be similar to the one held in 2011 for the city’s sesquicentennial, Keohane said. Archbishop Richard Smith will lead the ceremony, which will include performances by local schools. “If it’s anything like the one we did to celebrate the 150 years of St. Albert, it will be a pretty moving experience.” Expect the main-stage to go up by the ball diamond at the bottom of the hill on Wednesday. Thursday morning will see some 45 school buses converge on the hill packed with students, with hundreds more making their way to the site on foot. The event will go rain or shine, and is open to the public. The mass is from 9:45 to 11 a.m. Guests are asked to bring their own blankets or chairs to sit on, and to walk to the hill, as parking is very limited. Once the mass is done, crews will take down the stage and replace it with a big tent for Saturday’s big finish: the 150th anniversary gala, a posh event featuring formal dress, cocktails and a gourmet dinner. Tickets were about 90 per cent sold as of Wednesday, but there might be a few left by Saturday. The gala will feature a pair of auctions run by host Danny Hooper, Keohane said. Items up for bid include a lease on a new Volvo, a painting by St. Albert artist Lewis Lavoie (one that Lavoie will actually paint during the gala), a trip to the Vatican, and tickets to the Sept. 5 football match between Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish and the University of Texas Longhorns. Tickets to Notre Dame football games normally cost between $500 and $5,000 and are highly sought after, Keohane said. Proceeds from the auction will go towards the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools Education Foundation. Visit gsacrd.ab.ca for all the details. kma@stalbert.greatwest.ca

Thursday, March 17 • 7:30 pm Hailed as ‘queen of the squeezebox,’ Sharon Shannon has been treating audiences to her irresistible melodic charm for nearly 25 years. Growing up on the west coast of Ireland, an area historically steeped in music, Shannon began playing instruments as a child. Her debut album in 1991 remains the best-selling album of traditional music ever released in Ireland and inevitably launched her name to a wider audience. As a solo performer on accordion and fiddle, she quickly captured the imagination of the folk scene, while subsequent albums revealed a more experimental edge. A Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in her home country, Shannon instinctively knows how to pair her skills with others to make great music. From hip hop to cajun, country to classical, this prolific composer and musical icon has achieved legendary status around the world for her collaborations with some of the industry’s best folk, rock and world musicians including Bono, Sinéad O’Connor, Elvis Costello, Steve Earle and Jackson Browne. Pushing beyond the borders of traditional Irish music, the celebrated accordionist instinctively connects with audiences, touring extensively in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the U.S. and the U.K. throughout her career. A genre-defying performer armed with incomparable versatility and talent, Shannon’s unique high-octane approach appeals to all.

ROYAL OPERA HOUSE CINEMA SEASON

ROMEO AND JULIET Sunday, March 20 • 2 pm

An experience not to be missed by dance lovers,

Kenneth MacMillan’s groundbreaking ballet version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet comes to the big screen as part of the Arden Theatre’s new Cinema Series.

A signature work of The Royal Ballet’s repertoire, this exquisite new take on the greatest love story of all time resonates as deeply with audiences today as when it was first seen half a century ago. Set to Prokofiev’s magnificent score to enhance the romantic tragedy’s most famous scenes, including the balcony kiss and the devastating finale, MacMillan focuses on the complex emotions and fate of the star-crossed young lovers whose families are sworn enemies. This Romeo and Juliet performance is rich in the swaggering colour of 16th century Verona street life and in sword fights and celebrations. Experience this timeless tale of love in the face of adversity as told by the Royal Ballet.

Tuesday, March 29 • 7:30 pm Timber! is a show that will make you want to run away and join the circus. Inspired by lumberjacks and farmers of a bygone era, Québec’s Cirque Alfonse blazes a creative path that no one has yet dared to explore. A festive display of acrobatics set to live traditional Francophone folk music, three generations of the Carabinier clan revive a wacky world of lumberjacks and loggers with a joie de vivre that’s absolutely infectious. This versatile group of talented acrobats, dancers and musicians, create a colourful and energized experience that is clearly off the beaten track. With daring axe juggling, log throwing, a cracking whip, and epic feats of agility above the open blade of a giant saw, this original circus production comes to life to the folk music-tinged world of fiddles, banjos and tapping feet. And if you find time to breathe, you might even smell the freshcut pine logs! With plenty to make audiences of all ages cheerful, not the least of which is an opportunity to admire formidable displays of male facial hair, it’s a show that flawlessly blends the arts and techniques of the circus with the most picturesque facets of traditional Québec folklore.

CHOIR! CHOIR! CHOIR! Friday, April 1 • 7:30 pm What started as a no-commitment choir based in Toronto, has quickly become an international phenomenon. Exemplifying the very best in collaboration and community building, Choir! Choir! Choir! creators Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman joyfully blur the line between audience and performer. Dividing the crowd into their diatonic divisions, voices are aligned and refined for a surprisingly tuneful presentation that cracks the mould and reveals the flexibility and resiliency of music. Opening the door to anyone who wants to sing, Choir! Choir! Choir! is about fun, letting go and getting something back. By constantly pushing the boundaries of practice and performance, this inspirational duo’s black-magic glamour makes even the lowliest vocalist feel like a star. SHANE KOYCZAN Saturday, April 2 • 7:30 pm Powerfully engaging and authentic in attitude, Shane Koyczan is both a writer

and spoken word virtuoso. An award-winning Canadian poet, author and performer, he emerges in a new wave of 21st century poetry that dares to belong to the people and speak directly to them in their own voice.

Best known for his spoken-word performances, Koyczan shifts rhythmic verse into high gear as he steers his audience through social and political territory with a furious honesty and tender humanity rarely seen. His first published collection was the only work of poetry selected by both The Guardian and The Globe and Mail for their Best Book of the Year lists in 2005. Visiting Hours, now in its third edition, includes We Are More which was famously performed by the Penticton native at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Shaping and delivering his words in multiple mediums, Koyczan’s release of Stickboy, a novel in verse that chronicles the dark and lonely journey of a bullied child gripped by helpless rage, continues to be praised by teachers and mental health experts for its clever handling of the subject. Shane’s TED Talk ‘For The Bullied And The Beautiful’ has captivated millions worldwide along with his new album, Silence Is a Song I Know All The Words To, which is also a graphic novel of the same name. Renowned for bringing audiences to their feet from New York to London, Koyczan is an extraordinary talent that has redefined the meaning of “poet.” Sponsored by

MATTHEW BARBER PRESENT & JILL BARBER THE FAMILY ALBUM Friday, April 15 & Saturday, April 16 • 7:30 pm Singers, songwriters and siblings, Matthew and Jill Barber, return to loyal St. Albert fans to close the Arden season with solo hits and new music from their highly anticipated release, The Family Album, a collection of songs written by the Barbers plus covers of songs by the likes of Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Ian Tyson and more. Carving out a unique niche in the Canadian music landscape with her distinct voice and repertoire rarely confined to one genre, Jill Barber channels a vintage spirit while remaining completely contemporary. Her ability to write an immediately memorable song has made her one of Canada’s most recognizable artists. The Vancouver-based artists’ sixth studio album, Fool’s Gold, was written in the spirit of an era where hook and melody reign. The evocative chanteuse continues to explore different musical styles from traditional country to jazz and Motown. Juno-nominated Matthew Barber, who inspired Jill to follow her musical dreams, has eight highly successful albums of his own, including his latest release, Big Romance. Featuring gorgeous piano, guitar and rhythm, as well as exquisite backing vocals, this record has all the soul-stretching ballads, foot-stomping rockers, groovy mid-tempo tunes and hooks that audiences have come to expect from the Toronto-based troubadour.
