is proud to recognize our Government sponsors

ur Government knows that arts and culture play an important role in our Canadian identity and the vitality of our communities. That is why we invest in arts organizations like the Arden Theatre, which gives residents of the St. Albert region access to shows in a wide range of genres, as well as educational activities for youth. It is often in settings like this that young people get a taste for culture and discover their own creative spirits. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate the staff and volunteers of the Arden Theatre. Your efforts help foster a passion for the performing arts in people of all ages.

The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages

s Minister responsible for arts and culture in Alberta, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2009-10 season at St. Albert’s Arden Theatre. Acclaimed singer and songwriter Van Morrison once said, “Every performance is different. That’s the beauty of it.” With celebrated musicians from home and abroad to renowned dance performances, the new season at the Arden is certain to have something for everyone. Facilities like the Arden Theatre help to promote, support and showcase culture and the arts in Alberta, which greatly contributes to a strong and vibrant community. I would like to offer special thanks to the staff and volunteers at the Arden Theatre. Your dedication to not only theatre, but to Alberta’s arts and culture scene, is greatly appreciated. Best wishes for an enjoyable season!

The Honourable Lindsay Blackett Minister of Culture and Community Spirit MLA, Calgary-North West

message from the W

elcome to the Arden Theatre,

After a very memorable 25 years, we look to our future with excitement and pride. Whether hosting numerous local schools in their Christmas pageants, spring concerts and awards nights or being the venue for dance competitions, recitals or lectures, the Arden Theatre plays a pivotal role in our community. In addition to our strong community focus, we are also very proud to be able to present wonderful professional programming in the theatre – and this year is no exception. The Professional Series, Family Series and, now in its second year, the On Stage Series offer something for everyone. The 2009-2010 season includes; Canadian iconic rocker Kim Mitchell, Americana singersongwriter Tom Russell, jump-swing band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and blues favourite Eric Bibb who join emerging new talents like Juno Award winner Alex*Cuba, Cajun group Pine Leaf Boys and East Coast favourites Paper Lions. Dance this year is showcased in both the Professional Series, with four companies representing different cultures and styles, and in the On Stage Series with Peggy Baker, recipient of the 2009 Governor General Lifetime Award for Artistic Achievement. These are just a sampling of the diverse artists offered this season. As we reflect on our past accomplishments and look forward to future successes, I want to thank you for being a part of the audience and encourage you to join us again soon.

jake’s gift

A

n award-winning and fiercely moving one-woman play, Jake’s Gift, chronicles a World War II veteran’s long overdue journey back to Juno Beach. While there, Jake meets Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village, whose inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts; most notably, the war time death of his eldest brother Chester, a once-promising young musician. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the importance of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave. Inspired by her own visit to Normandy for the 60th anniversary of D-Day, Julia Mackey developed Jake’s Gift based on veteran experiences and her own discoveries. Mackey absorbs audiences in her amazing transformations, seamlessly shifting between the four distinct characters.

Julia Mackey Born into an active theatre family in Birmingham, England, she moved to Canada when she was three years old. Mackey grew up in Montreal, and received an education degree from McGill University before heading out west in 1993 to pursue acting and writing. Since early 2007, Mackey has been touring Jake’s Gift to Theatres and Festivals across Canada.

the cooper brothers

C

anada’s premiere country-rock band, The Cooper Brothers, is back. Brian and Richard Cooper released two albums under the major label Capricorn, the self-titled, Cooper Brothers and Pitfalls of the Ballroom. At the height of their career, the band toured throughout North America, sharing the stage with such artists as: The Doobie Brothers, Black Oak Arkansas, Joe Cocker, Charlie Daniels and Seals and Crofts. After Capricorn Records folded, the brothers released two more albums before disbanding in the mid eighties. In October 2006, The Best of the Cooper Brothers was released and the band performed for the first time on stage in over twenty years. This led to a number of sold-out live dates and a memorable Ottawa Bluesfest concert in front of twenty-five thousand people. The experience also sparked Richard to begin writing songs. Before long the brothers had enough for a new album and approached respected musician/producer and friend, Colin Linden. In February 2010 the new Cooper Brothers album entitled In From The Cold will be released, featuring 12 brand new songs and guest artists including Jim Cuddy, Delbert McClinton and Chuck Leavell.

lizt alfonso dance cuba

C

uba’s most popular dance company is back at The Arden. Havana-based Dance Cuba has remained, since its inception fifteen years ago, under the inspired creative direction of dancer-choreographer and company founder Lizt Alfonso. One of the world’s most energetic and visually-stunning dance troops, this all-female company of 17 beautiful and technicallysuperb dancers perform “with amazing unanimity” (New York Times) and with “sheer technical finesse” (Chicago Sun-Times) and are accompanied by an on-stage ensemble of 6 remarkable musicians. Dance Cuba fuses the rapidly clacking heels of the flamenco with the flowing grace of classical ballet, added to the hot passion of Afro-Cuban dance with a touch of jazz. Altogether it is exciting, riveting and highly sensual. Performing a new piece entitled Elementos, Dance Cuba will take the audience on a fanciful journey through the elements. A fabulous, spectacular dance show full of fantasy and optimism, in which Earth, Fire, Water and Air take on human form and unite to breathe life into Man. Through the evolution of different scenes, their particular fusion of ballet, flamenco and Afro-Cuban dance, so very unique to the company, gives the show a propelling force combined with an unparalleled energy.

samarabalouf

T

he story of Samarabalouf begins in 1997 at Amiens. That year the theme of the international film festival focused on gipsies, the people of the road. Francois Petit, who had just recently moved to the area, was invited to perform at the festival. This sparked new-found creativity. In a few months, new compositions had been written and worked on and a musical trio was being formed. By 2000, Samarabalouf was formed and they had produced their first album. As the concerts increased in number and the trio began to perform around France, their sound evolved from the gipsy heritage to assert its own identity shredding into rhythms of the rumba, the java and the boogie. These new compositions toured France and Belgium and the concerts began taking on the air of a mad ball: feet tapped, and hands clapped to the music of this energetic threesome as the double bass danced and vibrated under the hands of Luc Ambry who joined Pierrot Margerin and Francois Petit, making their current line-up. The music and tours keep coming bringing new encounters, inspirations and the chance to share this music that knows no borders.

T

tom russell

om Russell is one of those artists that you think you know a lot about. That is until you start looking around online. His musical prowess speaks for itself, 25 CD’s, music appearing regularly on TV and movies and having songs covered by artists like Johnny Cash, Nancy Griffith, Joe Ely, Iris Dement, Ian Tyson, to name a few. But then you uncover things that you might not know, like he earned a Masters Degree in Criminology from the University of California, he has taught school in Nigeria; he has published three books, he is an established and sought after painter and he is credited, along with Dave Alvin, with inventing the Americana radio format. The only thing that is not surprising about Tom Russell is, after all these years, he is still creating incredibly insightful music that makes critics, peers and fans take notice. His most recent release Blood and Candle Smoke is a collection of powerful observations, beautiful arrangements and superb vocals.

“Russell raises his song-writing to new and different heights of greatness…Album of the year (so far) hands down. Very possibly album of the decade!” Maverick UK magazine
