With an ever-expanding audience, it has been a high speed, full throttle ride for members of Vancouver’s Five Alarm Funk over the past 15 years. With a penchant for spontaneity, the band took hypnotic grooves and improvised until a very distinct high energy Five Alarm Funk sound emerged. This funk-fueled instrumental music is a sound that was applauded by fans of groove-oriented groups and artists ranging from James Brown and Antibalas to Tower of Power. For a number of years, Five Alarm Funk has successfully energized festival audiences in the summer months and sent exhausted, post-performance fans spilling out into the streets of Canada’s major club and campus venues during the winter months. With a 2018 Juno Award nomination for Instrumental Album of the Year, and a collaboration with funk legend Bootsy Collins, Five Alarm Funk remains Canada’s ambassadors of the big greasy groove.

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. a s a n Lú CELTIC/ROOTS Saturday, March 30 • 7:30 PM • $42 Named “the hottest Irish acoustic group on the planet”
by The New York Times, Lúnasa’s impressive catalogue of award-winning albums has been hailed as some of the most important in world music to date. Their inventive arrangements and bass-driven grooves continue to steer Irish acoustic music into new territory and solidify the quartet’s place as one of the finest roots bands of any generation. Seán Smyth (fiddle and low whistles), Kevin Crawford (flute, low whistles and tin whistles), Cillian Vallely (uilleann pipes and low whistles), Trevor Hutchinson (double bass) and Ed Boyd (guitar) work from a broad sound palette that has set Lúnasa apart from their peers. Hutchinson’s double bass is a rare component in Celtic music and the band, which has created a large body of original work, also draws on melodies from other Celtic regions such as Brittany, Galicia, Asturias and Scotland. Lúnasa’s collective resumes include impressive touring and studio credits with The Waterboys, Sharon Shannon, Eric Bibb, Eileen Ivers, the Riverdance touring company, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Bragg, Roseanne Cash, Tim O’Brien, Flook and Kate Rusby.

FOLK Wednesday, April 3 • 7:30 PM • $65
Judy Collins, who began her recording career nearly 60 years ago, is unquestionably a legend of contemporary folk and pop music. Whether she’s taking ownership of a cornerstone piece from the Great American Songbook, a Dylan or Mitchell tune, or a Stephen Sondheim classic, this Seattle born artist still has her audiences and peers marveling at her capabilities as a vocalist and interpreter. Blessed with one of the most immediately identifiable and alluring voices of the last half century, Collins’ seemingly innate ability to take listeners on a multi-faceted journey, has also not diminished. Albums such as In My Life (1965), Who Knows Where The Time Goes (1968), Judith (1975), Times of Our Lives (1982), and Fires of Eden (1990) more than stand the test of time – a testament to her timeless talents during eras of shifting tastes. Collins’ discography has continued to add significant pieces. In 2017, she recorded Everybody Knows, a critics choice, with Stephen Stills. The Arden Theatre is honoured to present one of the great artists of modern-day American music.

A poet laureate of the contemporary Canadian folk music scene, David Francey stands as one of the finest lyricists this country has ever seen – and that says a lot considering Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson and Gordon Lightfoot all came out of our deep well of talent. An artist who consistently captures the imaginations of his audiences and peers, Francey has released a dozen albums, won multiple Juno Awards, an International Acoustic Music Award and a Canadian Folk Music Award, as well as toured on both sides of the Atlantic. Most recently, The Travelin’ McCourys recorded his song Borderline on their 2019 Grammy Award-winning self-titled debut album! In 2018, the Mission Folk Festival, in B.C., presented a sensational tribute to Francey under the banner of The Francey Project. James Keelaghan, The Small Glories and Pharis and Jason Romero, were among the amazing talents to take part in this beautifully constructed show. With 12 exceptional albums released in just 20 years, we’ll presume that Francey will continue to provide us with poignant, image-laden songs for the next couple of decades to come!

Colleen Brown
sings The Joni Mitchell Songbook ROOTS/POP Saturday, April 13 • 7:30 PM • $36 A powerhouse singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and arranger, Alberta’s Colleen Brown has a great pop sensibility that she beautifully
joins with a more roots-oriented sound. Whether inspiring audiences to dance up a storm with big grooves and sparkling melodies, or draw on more introspective material, Brown is an extremely diverse artist. Brown was favourably compared to Joni Mitchell, both as a vocalist and a composer, early on in her career when she was building audiences in Edmonton. As the comparisons grew, Brown was invited by Front Porch Roots Revue to be a featured performer in their Up On Cripple Creek tribute to The Band’s Last Waltz concert. Brown’s version of Mitchell’s Coyote was an absolute show stopper and led Brown to embrace more of Mitchell’s repertoire into her shows. So, it’s no surprise that she has created an entire show built around the brilliant Mitchell catalogue.

ROOTS/BLUES/GOSPEL Wednesday, May 1 • 7:30 PM • SOLD OUT
Given her lengthy list of achievements, we could be excused for thinking that Ruthie Foster has been bringing her music to us for at least three or four decades. However, her debut recording, Full Circle, was only released in 1997! At that time, she was 35 years old and came to her audience from a Texas lineage that drew from the deep well of gospel music. In her formative years, Foster not only took advantage of a great opportunity to sing in that classic church setting, but also learned the foundation of guitar playing from a variety of teachers. Her personal life also had a chapter that would set her apart from many of her musical peers – she did a stint in the Navy where she gained life experience that gave her material to draw on as a songwriter later in life. Since her first recording in 1997, Foster has delivered a succession of fantastic, critically acclaimed albums, including The Truth According To Ruthie Foster, Let It Burn and Promise of a Brand New Day – all have led to her receiving significant recognition from the Blues music industry and the Grammy Award nominating bodies. Based out of Austin Texas, Foster has played Carnegie Hall, guested with the Allman Brothers Band, shared bills with Willie Nelson, Paul Simon and James Taylor and extensively toured Europe, North America and Cuba.
