Message from the Presenter
With every changing season, we have a chance to
reflect on the time and experiences that have passed and build excitement for what’s to come. Each season, it is my biggest hope that you get to make lifelong memories in our theatre and can escape the everyday hustle and bustle of life, even for just a moment. This season, we have so much to be excited about – music, dance, theatre, cirque, cinema and family programming – there’s something for everyone! I’m thrilled to welcome back patron favourites like Skerryvore, The Ennis Sisters, Sing-a-long-a Grease, as well as introduce sure-fire new favourites, Irish Mythen, Shakura S’Aida and Steve Poltz. Here’s to another remarkable year of memory-making! Caitlin North Professional Programming Presenter, Community Services, City of St. Albert
It is important to honour and acknowledge that we are on First Nation traditional land of Treaty 6 and the homeland of the Métis people of Alberta. We acknowledge that we, as Treaty People, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, share the mutual responsibilities for stewardship and sustainability of our environment, cultures and community within this beautiful land. The Wardens COUNTRY/FOLK/ROOTS
Supported by Bryan and Linda Reed
Thursday, November 28 2 PM • From $15 • St. Albert Community Hall The Wardens aren’t a country band. According to the Banff-based trio, they are more of a backcountry band – with some folk, roots and a hint of bluegrass, as well as tight vocal harmonies and rich storytelling. Their 2017 album, Sleeping Buffalo, tells of their experiences as national park wardens and relays tales, sometimes harrowing, of what happens when humanity and nature rub up close. Scott Ward (guitar), Bradley Bischoff (guitar) and Ray Schmidt (bass/mandolin) feel a deep connection to the land, one of Canada’s most prized landscapes, that they’ve patrolled on foot and horse-back for over 60 combined years as communicated through their music. The trio has performed across Western Canada, as well as shared the stage with other talented artists such as Blue Rodeo and Paul Brandt. THEWARDENSMUSIC.COM

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. The Ennis Sisters HOLIDAY/FOLK/CELTIC
Saturday, December 7 7:30 PM • From $36 Magic is in the air as beloved folk act The Ennis Sisters, bring their 10th annual Christmas tour to The Arden Theatre. Maureen, Karen and Teresa mix original songs, holiday classics, festive recitations and Irish step-dance into a fresh celebration of their favourite season. With multiple accolades – a Juno Award, as well as numerous East Coast Music Awards and Music Newfoundland and Labrador Awards – the trio’s signature East Coast sound showcases Irish influence and instruments such as the tin whistle and flute. With tight harmonies and voices as powerful as the Atlantic, it’s in their bones to sing. Throughout the sisters’ childhood their parents were making music – their father was a traditional button accordion player and mother grew up on the southern shore of the Avalon surrounded by music. Each year, The Ennis Sisters add new songs, stories and dances to keep the show fresh and exciting – everyone leaves feeling as though they just had a glimpse into Christmastime in Newfoundland! OKAN LATIN/JAZZ
Saturday, January 18 2 PM • From $28 Taking their name from the word for “heart and soul” in the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria, Toronto-based OKAN fuses Afro-Cuban roots with jazz, folk and global rhythms in songs about immigration, bravery and love. Embracing genres and roles that have historically been dominated by men, co-leaders, composers and multi-instrumentalists Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne bring a fresh perspective to Latin and world jazz fusion through powerful harmonies, incredible musicianship and potent lyrical content. Born in Cuba, both members of OKAN are Juno-nominated for their work with Battle of Santiago and Grammynominated for their contributions to Jane Bunnett and Maqueque of which they are former members. Backed by some of the finest jazz musicians in Canada, the duo launched their debut full-length recording in 2019. OKANMUSICA.COM

Harry Manx BLUES
Friday, January 24 7:30 PM • From $42 Blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of the East and West – creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. Manx has established a unique Indo-blues hybrid that is hard to forget and incredibly addictive to listen to. He has forged his distinctive style by studying with many legends, first as a sound-man in the blues clubs of Toronto during his formative years, and then under a rigorous tutelage with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt in India, where he also learned the voicings of Indian music – a subtle art that only comes with years of practice. In fact, Bhatt was the inventor of the 20-stringed Mohan Veena, which has become Manx’s signature instrument! A prolific artist, Manx has released 12 albums in as many years with no signs of slowing down. He has also received seven Maple Blues Awards, six Juno Award nominations and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Solo Artist. HARRYMANX.COM
