Much has been accomplished by Birds of Chicago, Allison Russell and JT

Nero, since the two became an artistic entity in 2012. Because the combined talents of the two embrace playing, writing, singing, and arranging, all with remarkable reach and seasoned depth, this is an artistic venture that is turning heads across the western world. Picking up where they left off with their previous projects, Po’ Girl (Russell) and JT and the Clouds (Nero), Birds of Chicago already had an impressive combined fan base and a supportive roots music community to connect with on the touring front when they joined forces. Most importantly, their creative chemistry immediately sparked new material from Nero and resulted in a terrific vocal blend. Four recordings later, Birds of Chicago have taken their material into studios with two of the best producers around, Joe Henry and the North Mississippi All-Stars’ Luther Dickinson, and the results have garnered rave reviews. Nero and Russell never settle into one sonic state for too long, engaging their audiences with a number of different roots music sounds and influences. As so many reviewers of their live shows have acknowledged, Birds of Chicago beautifully replicate live what we love on their recordings: a sound that offers us healing, communion, and celebration of life, in a dark and troubled time.

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. Paul Reddick

Paul Reddick is the definition of a true artist.

Bluesman is his chosen vocation as an artist, and as such Reddick has a deep understanding of, and a rock-solid connection to, vintage blues. It’s as though the music of greats like Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Muddy Waters have been part of his creative and personal make-up from an early age. This harp-playing singer devoted himself to the blues classics and legends in much the same way serious painters understand the nuance and intent of every stroke on a canvas created by a master. As Reddick has stated to his peers, supporters, and the entire blues community, “blues is a beautiful landscape……seek out the endless possibilities it offers, explore and express all the mysteries, from being here to being gone, and every moment in between. Expect and demand new stories, new songs, new sounds.” Reddick has practiced what he’s preached, and over time he has created a series of blues-basted and influenced recordings that rank as some of the finest to have ever come out of this country. For that matter, albums like 2012’s Wishbone and Ride The One stand as two of the strongest outings in the blues arena of the last decade, with the latter winning a Juno in 2016. Our featured guest has a way with turning a phrase both as a singer and harp maestro, and there’s a focused power running through everything that Reddick sings and plays that can be solitary, and understated, or muscular, but that voice and inspiration are always injected into a musical equation built on great dynamics, astute observations and a gift for telling a new story.

VARIETY/MENTALIST Friday, November 9 • 7:30 PM • $40

These program notes will probably be the last thing your eyes believe tonight as the stage is set for our guest Vitaly Beckman and An Evening of Wonders. Then again, that’s why you are here, for this very special presentation that recently finished an extended run at the Westside Theatre in the heart of New York City. This supreme entertainer and master of illusion has been turning the minds of audiences inside out, and upside down, for years. He even leaves some of his peers like Penn & Teller amazed and mystified by his brilliantly designed wizardry. Still a young man, Vitaly discovered his passion for magic in his early teens. It wasn’t long before he was leaving friends, family and anyone who would watch, bamboozled and thoroughly entertained with his presentations. While it looked for a few years as though a life in engineering would be his career path, his journey took a sharp turn when he decided to devote himself to this art and craft. It was a decision that neither he, or his growing legion of fans, would ever second guess today. The long list of rave reviews from sources like The Huffington Post, and most of the major dailies, as well as the hosts of countless television shows are coupled with box-office totals that make promoters and venue operators grin from ear to ear. As one reviewer enthusiastically declared of this Vancouver resident, “…the illusionist’s work is of magical simplicity. Objects disappear, reappear, and levitate with such startling, realworld matter-of-factness that the wonder of these moments is all the more great. There is a concreteness to the show that excites the imagination.”

BackSwPoirncgh COUNTRY/SWING Thursday, December 6 • 2 PM • $15 St. Albert Community Hall Our northern Alberta roots music scene is built on a foundation of players and singers who are dedicated, passionate and gifted.

Most of these veterans got their start and inspiration in the days when every major centre had a roots music venue or coffee house that played host to local and regional players as well as national and international touring artists. Inspiration came from countless nights of sitting mere feet from a performer at a venue, and in many instances emerging artists had the opportunity to interact with the heroes of the day following a concert. Penny and Jim Malmberg, the musical and life partners who drive Back Porch Swing, are two such individuals who are now the veterans of our scene. Back Porch Swing has been together for 16 years, all with the same line-up, as completed by the great gypsy-jazz fiddler Cam Neufeld and bassist Kevin Jacobson. They also continue to expand on their sound, and have found new ways to deliver their talents. “Jim and I have been doing quite a bit of writing the last couple of years, so we’ve gone out as a duo at times, playing house concert tours and teaching at roots music camps. It led to us recording a duo album at Riverdale Recorders,” says Penny who with Jim, also co-produces the annual New Year’s Eve Concert at MacDougall United Church, in aid of the food bank. Whether it’s swing, old time, bluegrass tinged, bluesy at heart, or music injected with some jazz, Back Porch Swing is as tasty as it comes.

One of the most identifiable artists in our country, Tom Jackson continues to inspire his peers and fellow citizens on a number of levels. At this time of year, it is Jackson’s commitment to helping the less fortunate and disenfranchised via his series of Huron Carole concerts that sits front and centre. This holiday season, Jackson and his troupe are presenting 17 shows in various parts of the country in aid of food banks. St. Albert is the thirteenth stop on that tour. For more than thirty years, Huron Carole has rallied individuals from all segments of our society, all of whom, as Jackson has stated, “are committed to changing the quality of life in their own backyard.” Jackson continues to claim that his first love remains music and his latest release, Ballads Not Bullets, sits nicely alongside his two-disc compilation The Essential Tom Jackson. For those younger individuals who have only recently been introduced to Jackson’s multiple talents, APTN has certainly put a bright spotlight on him again. The television network recently put the North of 60 television series in rerun mode, seven days a week, after almost 20 years of being off the air. Jackson was cast in the lead role as Chief Peter Kenidi in the long-running and popular nineties series, originally produced by CBC and syndicated around the world. Please join us in welcoming this activist, artist and humanitarian to the Arden.

Tales of s a m t s i r h C n w o r B e i l r a h C A

Jerry Granel li Trio JAZZ Saturday, December 15 • 7:30 pm • $40 Christmas time is here Happiness and cheer

Those two lines of lyrics sum up the love affair North American audiences have had with A Charlie Brown Christmas ever since Charles Schultz conceived the animated television special which made its debut during the Christmas season in 1965. Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, Woodstock, and Peppermint Patty won a generation over, and then another, and so it went. Here we are over a half century later and Jerry Granelli’s Tales of A Charlie Brown Christmas carries on the Peanuts gang tradition, with scintillating takes on tunes from the soundtrack that was certified quadruple platinum. Jerry Granelli was the drummer on that classic recording session as led by pianist Vince Guaraldi, and he’s fanned the flames of the Yuletide fire with his drum sticks and brushes, reminding audiences that he was one of the forces behind a drum kit during the heyday of hard bop jazz. Stay tuned for all your favourites from the original material as composed by Guaraldi to the stirring renditions of classics that found their way into the soundtrack, from Linus and Lucy to Christmas Time Is Here standing alongside What Child is This and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. “The music is incredibly groovy and demanding in its own way,” says Granelli. “Vince was a fine composer and versatile player and he, Fred and I could really cook. So putting together this trio to tour the show, I had to find complimentary musicians who could really handle the material and Simon Fisk and Chris Gestrin are perfect at We will be collecting for the presenting the material and also making it their own.” St. Albert Food Bank.
