Season Launch featuring

MOLLY JOHNSON M

olly Johnson’s voice evokes the aura of dark, smoky night clubs of a bygone era. It speaks to an emotional depth that few vocalists in any genre ever reach. Like the woman behind it, it is a voice filled with humour, joy, surprise, sassiness, and love. Molly Johnson has earned her reputation as one of Canada’s greatest voices. She has rocked standing-room only audiences in nightclubs and bars from coast-to-coast as a pop artist, seduced the patrons of salons and lounges with her luscious interpretations of jazz and blues standards, and made history at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, becoming the first Canadian female vocalist in the festival’s 17-year-history to sell out a show on the mainstage. Molly got her start in the entertainment business as a child actor in the Ed Mirvish Production of Porgy And Bess. In the 80s she went on to become lead vocalist of two rock bands, Infidels and Alta Moda. During the 90s she founded the Kumbaya Foundation and Festival, raising awareness and funds for people living with HIV/AIDS. In 2008 she was honoured with becoming an Officer of The Order Of Canada, and in the same year released her long awaited record of standards entitled Lucky. Four albums later Molly has, and continues to, tour the world, has received a Juno for Best Vocal Jazz Album and a National Jazz Award for Best Female Vocalist and still finds time to share her unique musical perspective on CBC Radio 2’s weekend morning program.

HAMLET (SOLO)

Considered one of the great humanist dramas, Hamlet has been staged time

and time again... but never like this. In what was a six year journey to mount a mesmerizing one-man version of Shakespeare’s epic poem, Raoul Bhaneja and Brooklyn-based director Robert Ross Parker developed this tour-de-force performance of Hamlet that leans toward a modernistic interpretation, yet never loses sight of the play’s lyrical essence.

“This is riveting. Hamlet (Solo) offers up the essence of Shakespeare’s brilliance, an opportunity to bathe in the Bard’s wildly inventive language and, in Bhaneja’s skilled hands, its ability to convey the nuance and range of human emotion.” nytheatre.com (USA) Raoul Bhaneja is no stranger to theatre, or Hamlet for that matter. He played Laertes in Neptune Theatre’s staging of the tragedy. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Christopher Plummer Scholarship providing him the rare distinction of performing at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, England as a member of the International Fellowship. Raoul is often recognized for his work on television, most recently as Pete on Train 48. An accomplished musician as well, Raoul Bhaneja is joined by Edmonton-based singer/keyboardist Graham Guest in The Legendary Miles Johnson on October 8 at the Arden Theatre.

RAOUL BHANEJA AND GRAHAM GUEST: THE LEGENDARY MILES JOHNSON

E

dmonton-based singer/keyboardist Graham Guest and Toronto actor/musician Raoul Bhaneja have joined forces to create The Legendary Miles Johnson. Intended to reach a broader audience by performing music unrestricted by genre yet full of passion, Guest and Bhaneja have created an amorphous band representing the diversity of their musical vision. Having released their debut CD at The Yardbird Suite in Edmonton in the fall of 2006, the duo’s newest album features guests from the South Asian Gahzals of Tanvir Alum, the lonesome harmonies of The Foggy Hogtown Boys, and the sophisticated vocals of jazz songstress Melissa Stylianou. The Legendary Miles Johnson marks the long awaited song-writing recording debut of Graham Guest, who has penned six stunning original tunes including the breakfast anthem Bacon and Egg, the high wattage opening track Last Time I Left New Orleans, and the tormented Heart Shaped Casket. Experience another side of Raoul Bhaneja as he trades in his Hamlet script for harmonica in a riveting night of jazz, bluegrass, delta blues, rock and country.

RUSSELL deCARLE If you like your whiskey straight and your love songs sad, you are going to love Russell

deCarle. With his sidemen Steve Briggs and Denis Keldie, Russell will lead you on a musical odyssey from Nashville to Memphis to Austin with a quick stop on the Champs Elysées, with your final resting place somewhere deep in the Bayou... Russell deCarle is a founding member, lead vocalist, bassist, and contributing songwriter to the multi-platinum, six-time Juno award winning Canadian country roots band Prairie Oyster. The band has had numerous hit singles, eight certified gold or platinum, and they have been inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

As a solo artist, Russell deCarle released his long-awaited and much-anticipated solo album, Under the Big Big Sky, in 2010. Having penned nine of the eleven songs, the album marks a definite, if unintentional, departure from his past work. Playing like a soundtrack to a vintage film, Under the Big Big Sky features a fluent mix of blues, jazz and R&B tinged western swing that plays homage to some of Russell’s all-time favourite artists.

“I’m a music lover first and foremost – a product of all the stuff I’ve ever listened to – and my tastes are very broad. To me this is a torchy, bluesy record more than anything else. It’s certainly a product of where I came from musically.” Russell deCarle

Radical Reels is a collection of the best high-adrenaline short films entered into the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival competition. These action-packed climbing, paddling, mountain biking, BASE jumping, skiing, snowboarding, and other adrenaline sport films capture an independent spirit and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Films: Cross Country Snowboarding, the world’s most dedicated Nordic snowboarders battle the winter elements as they fight prejudice from skiers and regular snowboarders alike. Follow Me examines why we love to ride. Whether its back yard sessions, ripping local trails, bike parks, road trips, or heli drops, it’s all about sharing the ride. Light the Wick is about sparking the flame and watching the world’s most talented and well-rounded skiers and riders blast off. Living the Dream follows Renan Ozturk; a traveling vagabond following his passion for rock climbing – sleeping outside in wild places, hitching rides, and draining his bank account. OSeven is a charming multi-sport nod to Sigmund Freud’s theory that “happiness is a child’s dream fulfilled in maturity.” Second Nature follows three vintage suit clad skateboarders as they test the limits of the human body on the roads of California’s High Sierras. The Storming is a progressive snowboarding feast for the senses, featuring Sammy Luebke, Kazu Kukobu, Torstein Horgmo, and a cast of chicks who rip. Tuzgle follows Nina Caprez and companion as they explore a wonderland of boulders and crags, nestled at an elevation of 4200 meters under the Tuzgle volcano in Argentina. The Ultimate Ride follows renowned kayaker Steve Fisher who brings together a brotherhood of big-water pros to experience the ride of their lives on Africa’s Zambezi River.

E

dmonton-based singer, songwriter, and multiinstrumentalist Colleen Brown has emerged as one of Canada’s most treasured artists. Having steadily gained musical momentum since her first self-released album Foot in Heart in 2008, Colleen’s distinctive voice and unique brand of melodic folk-pop earned her the Best Female Vocalist Award at the 2011 Edmonton Music Awards. Also the recipient of the Alberta Emerging Artist Award and finalist in this year’s CBC Song Quest, Colleen has shared the stage with the likes of Jim Cuddy, Jakob Dylan, Gord Downie, Danny Michel, and Hawksley Workman. This October, the Arden Theatre hosts the CD release celebration of Colleen Brown’s eagerly anticipated new album Dirt.
