As one of the finest young acts to come out of the east coast music scene in recent years, The Fortunate Ones are also being embraced by roots music audiences across the country.
Solid as the rock on which they live, this Newfoundland duo of Catherine Allan and Andrew O’Brien have quickly established themselves as peers with many of the artists that influenced their musical identity. In five short years, The Fortunate Ones have been nominated for a Juno Award, landed two singles at the top of CBC Radio 2’s Top 20, won the 2016 East Coast Music Awards “Rising Star” award, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and four Music Newfoundland and Labrador Music Awards. On this current tour, The Fortunate Ones have been showcasing much of the material from their second album Hold Fast, released this past spring. Early reviews speak to the vast sonic sweep they deliver, those immediately identifiable and stunning vocals, and the thread of sincerity found in everything they compose and perform. Allan and O’Brien take their material from the studio to the stage with all the essential elements and emotion in full flight, making The Fortunate Ones a fully formed act and one that to say the least, has a very bright future.

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. ROOTS/COUNTRY/BLUEGRASS Friday, October 19 • 7:30 PM • $35
When we think of artists who are disciples of old time music born in rural
settings, it’s usually places like Kentucky or Tennessee that immediately come to mind. But in the case of Pharis and Jason Romero, home is the mountainous region of north central B.C., specifically the village of Horsefly. It’s the place where this wife and husband team have found inspiration for countless songs, where Jason designs and builds his worldrenowned banjos and the two produce the annual summer Arts On The Fly Festival. The Romeros had to rebuild their home and workshop after a devastating 2016 fire and out of the ashes of that fire has come their latest and fourth recording Sweet Old Religion. As a reviewer from the U.K.’s Folk Radio website wrote, “Sweet Old Religion communicates genuine warmth and feel-good grooves, delivered with beautifully crafted musicianship and singing — a textbook illustration of Pharis and Jason’s delightfully handmade, homegrown music.” Coming to the Arden Theatre on the heels of recent festival performances at the Alaska Folk Festival, the Mission Folk Festival and Salmon Arm Roots & Blues, an evening with Pharis and Jason Romero promises to be magical and memorable.

It was a decade ago when Whitehorse was born out of a producer/artist relationship where Luke Doucet produced what would be Melissa McClelland’s fourth solo album Victoria Day. The creative and personal chemistry in those sessions produced serious sparks between the two, and more importantly the groundwork was laid for Doucet and McClelland to continue on together as the new musical entity known as Whitehorse. It’s been an action-packed ride for the two multi-talented artists as they have toured extensively across the continent. After touring as an opening act for Blue Rodeo, it wasn’t long before Whitehorse was picking up Canadian Folk Music Award nominations and snagging a Juno in 2015 for their Leave No Bridge Unburned album. In live settings they were quickly headlining festivals and selling-out prestigious venues. This tour finds McClelland and Doucet adding material from their new Northern South Vol. 2 release to their live show. Vol. 2 continues to deliver modernized takes on blues classics, in the same fashion as Northern South Vol. 1. This material also gives Doucet the platform to dispense his amazingly diverse influences and talents as a guitarist, and vocally both Melissa and Luke are in top form as lead, duet and support singers.

Public Art: Reflecting Change by Paula E. Kirman
Art is the catalyst for change in our community and artists are leading that change. Take St. Albert’s Botanic Park, for example. A lone pole in the park was a challenge to move and integrate it into the site. Enter emerging artist Ryland Fortie. Using his skills as a creative thinker and maker, Fortie came up with the piece titled butterfly (kids having fun, flying kites, and looking at cloud shapes passing by) which now sits atop that pole. Fortie’s representation of a butterfly parallels the possibility of creative transformation in our own lives. “I wanted to capture something more dynamic, in a state of change or action, symbolizing transformation,” Fortie explains. The Cultural Services team provides mentorship to emerging artists in the process for public art, which helps to support and develop artists to produce new work. The result is changing what kind of art is made available for the Collection, and how people look at the art itself. “In a public space, art can interact with people in a very casual way,” says Fortie, who is originally from Kamloops B.C., and now lives in Edmonton. Artists are creatively changing our expectations of public art lasting forever. The artwork produced as part of the Art in Public Places Emerging Artist Program is temporary, remaining in place for a minimum of two years. This gives the community a chance to discover the work and the new ideas it represents and then change along with its location. The Art in Public Places Emerging Artist program provides opportunities for artists, with less than 5 years professional practice, to experience the Public Art process. Eligible artists can be living in, studying art in, or exhibiting art in St. Albert. The smaller scale and temporary nature of the commission is meant to encourage participation by artists who may not have the equipment or resources to support larger scale or permanent installations. Local public art projects are supported through the City of St. Albert’s Percent for Public Art Policy, where the City dedicates one per cent of the budgeted cost of all eligible capital projects to fund the accession of public art. This fund provides new inspirational artworks that speak of St. Albert’s legacy and commitment to build a sense of community and belonging.

BLUEGRASS/COUNTRY Tuesday, October 23 • 2 PM • $15 St. Albert Community Hall
There are few musicians as young as Kayla and Matt Hotte who are considered bonafide veterans of Alberta’s roots music scene.
A nurturing home environment allowed their talents and interests to blossom and these siblings were turning heads not long after they started playing and singing two decades ago. After winning fiddling awards and being named Western Canadian Banjo Champion at the age of 13, Matt started turning in outstanding performances at the Blueberry Bluegrass Festival. It wasn’t just audience members paying attention as he was offered a spot in The Liberty Bluegrass Boys out of Texas, with whom he spent considerable time on the road. Also a rockabilly aficionado, Matt went on to play electric guitar and tour overseas with Canadian rockabilly legend Ronnie Hayward. At the same time, Kayla was on her way to becoming a champion mandolin player while immersing herself in all sorts of traditional roots music. She then went on to receive her diploma in Jazz Studies at Grant MacEwan. Projects like Kayla Hotte and Her Rodeo Pals have been championed by CKUA’s Allison Brock and Kayla continues to establish herself as a terrific vocalist, songwriter and interpreter. For this project Matt and Kayla Hotte are now working together playing some of the hottest bluegrass in the land.

When Jann Arden’s sublime voice first began to dominate the radio airwaves in the early nineties, it was evident that this was the voice of an artist that could, and would, sustain audiences for years to come. Songs of substance, both emotionally charged and image laden, and built on stunning arrangements and magnetic melodies came in rapid-fire succession. I Would Die For You, Insensitive, Unloved, Good Mother, and Could I Be Your Girl stand as the foundation of what has been a remarkable 25 years of recording and touring. Fourteen albums down the line, Arden’s most recent release is These Are The Days which was released earlier this year. Considered by many to be the Calgary songwriter’s most compelling and poignant effort to date, it marked back to back recording sessions that put her in the creative company of Grammy-award winning producer Bob Rock. Arden has described the album as “whimsical and magical.” This is a rare opportunity to witness Jann Arden performing in an intimate setting as The Arden Theatre and one that will be talked about for seasons to come.

FAMILY/NOISY THEATRE Wednesday, October 31 • 10 aM $10 Adults • $5 Children • Under 2 years FREE FREE pre-show activity begins at 9 AM in the St. Albert Place lobby.
A sure-fire favourite at Children’s Festivals around our province, Calgary’s Rattle & Strum have proven time and time again they are all about fun! It’s now been five fruitful years for this delightful duo who introduced themselves to appreciative audiences with rambunctious and interactive shows. They simultaneously released their self-titled debut album and between their wildly popular live shows and that disc, Rattle & Strum were on the receiving end of accolades quickly, as they were nominated for both a Western Canadian Music Award and a Canadian Folk Music Award. The icing on the cake came in their winning a prestigious Parents Choice Award. With young audiences insisting on more from the duo, Rattle & Strum released their second album, Ants in My Pants, in 2017. Consisting of 15 tunes, the album covers topics such as wild turkeys, marshmallows, sneezing, pocket contents, the mysterious superhero that is Meatball Man, and of course — ants in pants! Says Strum, “Unlike certain children’s music that makes most adults want to put in their earplugs, we have heard comments from many parents’ saying that they love the songs, and some even admit that they listen even when their children aren’t with them.”
