WELCOME messages
Welcome to the Arden Theatre’s 2012-2013 season.
With the approach of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, our Government is pleased to celebrate all that makes Canada a remarkable country, including organizations like the Arden Theatre. For almost 30 years, this theatre has contributed to the cultural vitality of St. Albert and indeed Alberta as a whole, offering residents and visitors first-class performances designed to attract audiences of all ages and from all walks of life. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate everyone involved with the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.
The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
O
n behalf of the Government of Alberta, I would like to welcome everyone to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.
Located in the heart of downtown St. Albert, the Arden Theatre is the city’s cultural soul, connecting community members in all walks of life to the joy of artistic performance. In the theatre’s seats, people of all ages have been captivated by the music, drama, magic and fun of the theatre’s diverse programming. As well as hosting internationally acclaimed entertainers, the theatre’s stage has showcased school performances and dance competitions, giving local talent a taste of the limelight. Just as important, the theatre’s lobby echoes 29 years of laughs and spirited conversation between friends, family and community members. My thanks to the numerous staff members, volunteers and arts enthusiasts for their dedication to supporting and promoting the Arden Theatre as a cherished cultural hub in St. Albert. Without further ado, enjoy the performance!

elcome to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season! I invite you to take flight with the Arden and cultivate inspiration through rich artistic offerings. With an engaging and diverse program of music, comedy, theatre, dance, and film, your imagination will be soaring to new heights. Whether it’s their first appearance on our stage – like the iconic Cowboy Junkies or comedian Brent Butt, or they are returning due to popular demand – like the delightful Lunch at Allen’s or well-loved Matt Andersen – I am confident that whatever your mood or preference, you’ll find something this season that will excite your senses. For our younger audiences, we have a wonderful selection of family programming that promises a fun-filled and educational ride for children through the wondrous world of silly science, the quintessential sounds of New Orleans, and a multimedia presentation where the stage becomes an artist’s studio. St. Albert Children’s Theatre also brings to the Arden stage an adaptation of the wildly popular novel and blockbuster movie Legally Blonde, The Musical. Thank you to the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society, the many dedicated volunteers and the Cultural Services staff, for your efforts, year after year, in uniting us all with rich artistic experiences. Thank you for your ongoing support of cultural expression in our community. Now please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Hank WillStaiams rring Joe Matheson
“Live” 1952
Friday, October 26 7:30 pm In this tribute performance, actor Joe Matheson, who has been dubbed “the quintessential voice of Hank Williams”, masterfully embodies the American singer-songwriter regarded as one of the most important country music artists of all time. A veteran of the stage, having performed in the Canadian premieres of Tommy and Miss Saigon, plus a two-year run of the hit musical Jersey Boys in Toronto, Saskatchewan-born Joe Matheson promises to give “... a most believable portrayal of the talented and tortured singer”, according to the London Free Press. The voice is spot on, the laughs are lighthearted and the music is, of course, just a lil’ bit lovesick. Playing all of his hits, including Move It On Over, Cold, Cold Heart and Hey Good Lookin’, this musical theatre piece is filled with tales only this driftin’ cowboy could tell. More than any songwriter before him, Hank drew on real-life experiences and emotions when crafting his great work. The indelible way he expressed his joy, his distress, and his spiritual searching set the standard against which all songwriters now measure themselves. Hank’s monumental legacy becomes even more notable when realizing he issued only thirty singles in his lifetime—and five more posthumously. Eleven went to #1, and all were recorded in less than six years. Yet that small body of work changed the course of American music, forever altering the sound of country music and motivating songwriters of all styles to dare to be as emotionally bare and as unabashedly real as Hank had been. Hank Williams “Live” 1952 gives audiences a glimpse at what might have been: a night with Hank, just as the world seemed to be getting rosier.

ARDEN ORIGINAL
Bluebird NBorth lues Halloween
Wednesday, October 31 7:30 pm In an original presentation, the Arden has gathered together a musical coven consisting of five of Canada’s top blues players: Now 33 years into his recording career, Colin Linden is a member of that select club of artists that just keeps getting better as the years go on. A genuine renaissance man of roots music, Colin is a singer and songwriter of great skill, an in-demand and prolific record producer, a sideman to superstars and, for the past decade, a member of the highly successful trio, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. In her signature coy and sprightly manner, Little Miss Higgins is a remarkable country-blues performer whose music is steeped in the traditions of Memphis Minnie, Billie Holiday, and Joni Mitchell, showcasing her authentically retro vocal style. With her irresistible prairie charm, Little Miss Higgins has built a strong national reputation on her ability to pick up on blues styles of the past, while remaining true to her own intuition and creativity. John Rutherford has long championed the music scene in Alberta, both behind the scenes and now in the spotlight. John has gained a reputation as a musician whose sound fuses an eclectic range of influences yet spirits the tradition and passion of the blues. The result is a blazing signature sound that is uniquely his own. Edmonton-based singer and pianist Graham Guest might not be a household name, but you’ve likely heard him play. Being one of the foremost go-to piano players in Canada, Graham is known for his solid rhythmic foundations and stylistic embellishes that add magic to every performance. He last wowed Arden audiences in 2011 in The Legendary Miles Johnson. You might only know Grant Stovel as a host on CKUA, but there is a whole other side to this long-time radiohead. Grant has been keeping the time for a variety of folk, blues, roots and rock groups in Canada since the early 90’s, including Edmonton favourites, The Swiftys. But it’s the blues that has always been his truest musical passion which is clearly evident when you see and hear him perform live.

Danny Michel Friday, November 9 7:30 pm Multiple Juno Award nominee, treasured songwriter, and quiet do-gooder, Danny Michel makes the kind of rock that has undeniable rhythm and spicy smooth hooks. Having opened our 2010-2011 Season with his signature pop-rock sound and infectious charisma, Michel returns to the Arden with echoes of traditional Garifuna, rock, funk and Caribbean grooves that will have audiences flocking back to see him live.
“Danny Michel has reached a point where his musical vocabulary is so broad, his songwriting/arranging chops so sharp, his guitar playing so distinctive and his taste for the right sonic touch so impeccable that he can do whatever he wants and make it compelling.” – Eye Magazine His brand new album, his 10th, Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me, dives into the waves of Belize’s musical deep, featuring Maya guitar, turtle shells, donkey jaw-bone, and traditional Garifuna segunda & primero drums. The album cultivates lush rhythms and sounds, the perfect backdrop for Michel’s eloquently buoyant songwriting style. To make the record, Danny relocated from the Golden Horseshoe to the foot of the Xunantunich mayan ruins in Benque Viejo del Carmen. There, he teamed up with members of the Garifuna Collective, The Benque Players, and pioneering producer Ivan Duran at Stonetree Records, a label/studio that has been instrumental in bringing the Belizean sound to the world. Arden audiences are in for a special night, hearing new music from Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me, an album that saturates Danny’s wholehearted imagery in a rich tropical palette, and shows unreserved artistic commitment to the experience.

Honens Laureate
Sohn insoo M Variations Performs Bach’s Goldberg Saturday, November 10 8 pm Pre-show wine tasting at 7 pm in Progress Hall. The prestigious Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary, Alberta, found a genuine artist in Minsoo Sohn, the Korean-born winner of the 2006 event. Known as a performer with poetic vision and musical intelligence, Sohn has garnered praise from critics and audiences alike for his masterful virtuosity and deep musicianship as a pianist. The latest accolade, published in The New York Times, called his Honens-label recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, a “beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation” and named it one of the top classical recordings of 2011.
“Sohn’s impeccable and noble performances enabled us to hear how beautiful and interesting the music is. One can feel absolutely certain that Sohn is an artist, a man who will create life in music, find listeners, and reward them.” – Boston Globe His path to conquering Bach’s illustrious Goldberg Variations, a monumental work in piano literature, began at the age of three. Following a move to Boston from his native Korea to study with Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun at New England Conservatory, Minsoo was soon hailed as a performer with unbelievable technical prowess and versatility. In addition to being Honens’ First Laureate, he has been top prize winner of other International competitions including Busoni, Cleveland, Hilton Head, Rubinstein, Santander, and Queen Elizabeth. Minsoo Sohn fully embraces the power of his instrument to create a performance rich in emotion, and all-engaging to those in his presence. His notable interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations has been broadcast numerous times on CBC and across the United States on NPR’s Performance Today. He has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Israel, collaborated with leading conductors, and has performed with a number of world-class orchestras. An avid chamber musician as well, Minsoo Sohn is currently on faculty at Michigan State University.

Lunch At Allen’s
Thursday, December 13 & Friday, December 14 7:30 pm The holiday season is the time of year where we gather with old friends to laugh, tell stories and sing joyful carols. And so it’s the perfect time to meet up for Lunch at Allen’s. This isn’t your average songwriter’s circle... it’s an intimate and humourous performance by some of Canada’s finest artists. Featuring Murray McLauchlan, Ian Thomas, Cindy Church and Marc Jordan, the songwriting prowess of this quartet is so exceptional, their stage-presence so delightful, it is sure to make for a magical holiday celebration. It all began as a regular get together at Allen’s Pub & Restaurant on The Danforth in Toronto with Canadian music icon Murray McLauchlan and old friends Ian Thomas and Marc Jordan. After adding the voice of Cindy Church, a “lunch at Allen’s” turned into an outstanding band performing some of Canada’s (and the world’s) most enjoyed songs from each of these songwriters’ impressive catalogues. Marc Jordan and Ian Thomas’ songs have been recorded by everyone from Rod Stewart to Bette Midler, and Diana Ross to Santana. Murray McLauchlan’s hits have covered Canadian airwaves from coast to coast. Cindy’s (the sweetest) voice and songs are well known on the folk festival circuit through her solo work and as a member of Quartette with Sylvia Tyson. Together, it seems as though they’ve been playing for years with an energy and freshness like they’ve just met. There will be Christmas favourites done with a Lunch at Allen’s twist, some original Christmas songs and even a couple of hits for good cheer. It is always a very merry evening when friends like these get together!
