It’s time to celebrate! For three decades, the Arden Theatre has provided our community with the gift of memorable artistic experiences. Talented artists from far and wide and even from our own backyard, have brought their passion for music, dance, theatre, comedy and film to our city to share with you, our friends and dedicated patrons. While we reflect on 30 years of cultivating vibrant cultural expression past and present and toast the Arden Theatre for the significant impact it has had in the city of St. Albert, we hope you do the same. What has been your unforgettable moment here at the Arden? I invite you to share your story with us during this 30th anniversary year. Without your dedicated support, we wouldn’t have such a milestone to celebrate. Thank you and enjoy this commemorative season.

message from the
PRESENTER Welcome to the 30thAnniversary season of the Arden! Before beginning my work here at the Arden Theatre, I was a long time patron of this venue, attending countless performances with my family throughout the majority of my life. The Arden is a vital part of the community of St. Albert, and the greater Edmonton region, and I know firsthand what kind of impact it has on the lives of its patrons, both young and old. I look forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary with you and hearing about your favourite memories from the past 30 years at the Arden.

message from the
Minister of Culture As Minister of Culture, it is my great pleasure to welcome everyone to the 30th anniversary season of the Arden Theatre. Another season at the Arden means another invitation to the people of St. Albert and the whole capital region to welcome, and to share, a world of great performance. How many lives have been touched by brilliance here, over thirty years? How many moments of enchantment have been shared, how many ordinary evenings have been turned into magic, how many artistic dreams have been given the push they needed to become reality? We cannot know for sure, but each of us in these seats cherishes the personal and collective treasure that has built up here over three decades, and promises to do so, we hope, for evermore. The Government of Alberta is pleased to help support the Arden Theatre through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. My thanks to the City of St. Albert, the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society and especially the audience, for helping to build this cultural treasure. Whether this is your first time at the Arden or you have made your contribution throughout the past thirty years, you are an indispensable part of the magic.

Unflinching honesty, real beauty, and incredible talent best classify The SteelDrivers. As seasoned Nashville veterans in their own right, Richard Bailey, Mike Fleming, Gary Nichols, Tammy Rogers, and Brent Truitt joined forces in 2008 to make an unapologetic statement in the world of Americana music. The SteelDrivers braid their bluegrass roots with new threads of their own design, bringing together country, soul, and other contemporary influences to create an unapologetic hybrid of sound. Since the release of The SteelDrivers (2008) and Reckless (2010), The SteelDrivers have been nominated for three Grammys, four IBMA awards, and the Americana Music Association’s New Artist of the Year. They were presented the International Bluegrass Music Association’s award for Emerging Artist of the Year in 2009. Their new album, Hammer Down, is nothing short of superb musicianship, reflecting the soul of a timeless string band with an eye for innovative collaboration.
“The SteelDrivers suck you in and wrap you in their ever loving arms on Hammer Down.Ten songs chock full of classic country heartbreak and neurosis await you, wrapped in amazing bluegrass arrangements bursting with irresistible pop hooks. The chemistry here is amazing...” – Wildy’s World

Little time or appetite to make the change
School site swap not very likely BY peter Boer Staff Writer A suggestion that could see St. Albert’s newest elementary school built in Kingswood instead of Erin Ridge North appears to be a non-starter. At Monday’s city council meeting Coun. Cam MacKay asked administration to explore an idea first put forward by council candidate Sheena Hughes – move the elementary school Cam announced by the maCkay province last month Councilor from Erin Ridge North to Kingswood, then move the francophone high school pegged for construction at Eldorado Drive to Erin Ridge North. Such a move, said Hughes, would address concerns of Erin Ridge sheena residents about the hughes size of the high school Candidate compared to the area of the school site, and worries about heavy vehicle traffic and parking at the Eldorado site. “I just tried to think of some kind of solution,” said Hughes. “It just occurred to me this is an alternative.” The city doesn’t have title to the site Hughes is suggesting it explore. The land in Kingswood has long been at the centre of an ongoing dispute between developer Canterra and the city. Canterra is supposed to hand the land over to the city but will only do so if the city guarantees a high school won’t be built on the site. President Murray Brown has been previously quoted as saying high school students don’t make good neighbours. The city has said it will not issue any development permits to Canterra until it hands over the land. This kind of swap could finally bring some peace to the ongoing dispute, Hughes said. See “School site,” page 4

WILD WEATHER – A large storm cloud passes over a field of canola northwest of St. Albert on Monday as a stretch of cold, rainy weather finally subsides, making way for hotter temperatures this week.
City reviewing flood plain maps BY peter Boer Staff Writer
The city will have another look at its flood plain data for the sake of caution but is confident little will need to change in the wake of the province’s policy change on housing development within flood areas. The province announced Sunday anyone who builds or rebuilds within identified 1:100 year flood plains in Alberta will not qualify for disaster relief in the event of a flood. The changes come on the heels of massive flooding last month in southern Alberta that has left many homes uninhabitable. Stephen Khan, St. Albert’s
MLA, confirmed Thursday that policy change is province wide, not just for those areas that recently flooded. “The premier is very clear that the policy is not just for the area in southern Alberta. It’s a policy for all of Alberta moving into the future,” Khan said. But city officials maintain the policy change should have very little impact on St. Albert. As the rules currently stand, building anything in St. Albert’s flood plain is forbidden. “It’s pretty clear in the land use bylaw that it is prohibited,” said Carol Bergum, the city’s senior long-range planner. It does allow for some structures such as util-
ity infrastructure or temporary outdoor shelters, but that’s about all, she added. Bergum said the city is looking at its flood plain mapping
and also reviewing maps in the province’s possession to make sure both are as up to date as possible. See “Flood plan,” page 4
ApRIL BARtLEtt/St. Albert Gazette
WATER WORRIES – The RiverHouse Restaurant and several other buildings in that area are described as below the flood line. The city says no other flood risk areas exist in St. Albert.

Matt Haimovitz Beyond Bach Saturday, November 9
|
8 pm
Pre-show wine tasting at 7 pm in Progress Hall. On a mission to expand the horizons of traditional classical music, Israeli-born cellist Matt Haimovitz is one of the genre’s most adventurous artists. Having long championed savvy and provocative ways to perform classical repertoire, Matt is redefining what it means to be a musician in the 21st century. From spicing up Bach to rocking out to Zeppelin, he performs everywhere from concert halls to clubs, ensuring that classical music isn’t defined by where it is presented. The consummate mixologist of multiple genres, Matt Haimovitz began his path to groundbreaking arrangements at the age of 13. By 16, he was touring with the Israel Philharmonic, and was performing in concerts with the New York Philharmonic. In that same year, Haimovitz was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant for exceptional musical achievement, the youngest musician to receive this award. Haimovitz has since gone on to perform on the world’s most esteemed stages, and currently mentors an award-winning studio of young cellists at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in Montreal. sponsored by

Meaghan Smith Friday, December 13
|
7:30 pm
Meaghan Smith’s music takes you to a colourful and imaginative place of unfettered joy, and it’s getting noticed in a major way. Her debut album, The Cricket’s Orchestra, was lauded by the press. Described as sounding “wry and retro” (New York Times) and “as if Bjork recorded an album with k.d. lang and Doris Day” (National Post), the Canadian singer-songwriter’s unique sound has already won her Best Pop Recording of the Year at the 2011 East Coast Music Awards, and the 2011 Juno Award for Best New Artist. On this cold wintry night, warm up to her rich and sophisticated voice performing contemporary, re-imagined Christmas tunes from her album, It Snowed. An eclectic holiday collection of songs, the album includes original and standard favourites that feature her unique modern/vintage vibe laced under pop melodies. A musician with a deep love for the holidays, Meaghan drew inspiration from the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s to create a modern collection of original songs and standard favourites that sparkle with merriment.
“There’s something about long dark winter nights contrasted with brilliantly sparkling snowy days, or freezing winter air and the comforting heat of an inviting fire. People are thinking of each other, buying gifts for one another or just getting together. It’s the traditions, the food, the friends, the family, the lights and the music that I love. I want to be a part of the joy in people’s holidays.”– Meaghan Smith

The Craig Brenan Big Band performs Duke Ellington s The Nutcracker Suite Saturday, December 14
|
7:30 pm
The Christmas season is in full swing and The Craig Brenan Big Band heats it up with brass a blazin’! Some of Alberta’s finest award-winning jazz musicians come together to perform Duke Ellington’s re-imagining of the timeless classic, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite. It’s not easy to transform the Nutcracker Suite’s romantic orchestra into jumpin’ jazz melodies, but that’s exactly what Duke Ellington and his collaborator, Billy Strayhorn, did. Tonight, The Craig Brenan Big Band brings its own signature twist to this holiday favourite. Infused with equal parts New York jazz, Vegas glitz, and Hollywood glamour, and inspired by their travels and musical styles past and present, the score is a complete shake up of the traditional. Dance of the Reed Pipes becomes Toot Toot Tootie Toot, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is rechristened Sugar Rum Cherry, and swingin’ solos add a festive twist to other classic holiday favourites.

Spotlight on Row P, Seat 41 When the Arden Theatre installed new theatre seating in 2011, Janice Eglinski was one of the first people to sponsor a seat in the Arden’s seat campaign. Janice chose seat P41, located at the end of the very back row. Everyone has their favourite seat, but what’s the story behind P41? Janice made her donation in memory of her sister, Debbie Jamieson who passed away in 2006. Debbie taught for many years in St. Albert at Bellerose Composite, Lorne Akins, W.D. Cuts, Paul Kane and Memorial Composite High in Stony Plain. She touched many hearts and positively influenced countless students with her spirit and care. Debbie had a reputation for staging lavish musical productions and holding auditions where everyone won a part. Rehearsals began in September for February shows and her students learned that everyone had a place and it was okay to be different. A memorial seat at the Arden, the seat where Debbie used to sit during rehearsals, was a good fit for Janice because her sister was passionate about the arts, especially drama and music. “Deb was a bright light who attracted students as a teacher, mentor and friend”, says Janice. The plaque on the armrest of P41 reads: “The show must go on. Remembering Debbie Jamieson.” Debbie’s motto was: no waiting around – live life for today. What are YOU waiting for?
