Friday, October 16 • 7:30 pm Armed with a brilliantly eccentric and utterly unforgettable name, The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer have been making killer music together for nearly a decade. Shawn Hall, aka the ‘harpoonist’, and harmonica player, Matthew Rogers, aka the guitar-slinging ‘axe murderer’, are a blues-rock duo widely known for their unique sound and commanding stage presence. A gritty and funky treat, these long-time friends pay tribute to the past, while moving the blues forward with contemporary lyrics and arrangements. Rugged vocals paired with an arsenal of harmonicas, guitars and foot percussion, gives listeners a wild mix of funk, rock, southern roots, honky-tonk and Motown. Admittedly dissimilar as they are similar, the duo agrees the resulting creative friction has helped their music evolve into an unapologetic, ‘rough around the edges’ sound that packs a greasy punch. In addition to multiple Maple Blues Awards, the Vancouver-based pair’s most recent album, A Real Fine Mess, was nominated for a 2015 Juno Award. They’ve also had countless songs featured on television shows such as CSI, The Good Wife and Blue Bloods.

“This duo is making some of the most gritty, raw and muddy music north of the Mississippi.” – CBC Sponsored by

amelia curra WITH OPENING GUEST

BRADEN gATES

Saturday, October 17 • 7:30 pm Newfoundland’s acclaimed Juno-winning songstress, Amelia Curran, wants people to know they are not alone. Nearly a decade after coming through a serious period of anxiety and depression, the songwriter extraordinaire goes public with her struggles shining a spotlight on the issue of mental health – a theme on her newest album, They Promised You Mercy. Celebrated for her masterful lyricism, Curran’s latest collection is an uplifting group of songs that say a lot with just a few words, raising the lyrical bar yet again with unbeatable eloquence. With music moving between her signature melancholy folk and something closer to pop, Curran’s velvetysmooth voice and knife-sharp lyrics find peace, and even cheerfulness, amidst layers of gorgeous, lush sounding instrumentation. The National Post describes her music as “a bit like Leonard Cohen being channeled in a dusty saloon by Patsy Cline.” Fort Saskatchewan raised singer/songwriter, Braden Gates, opens this inspirational evening with songs from his latest album, Ferris Wheel. As one of the most intriguing folk-music artists in Alberta, Gates, masterfully combines his love for the old-time fiddle scene with intricate guitar work. In 2015, the rising musician commanded attention as the Male Artist of the Year at the Edmonton Music Awards. Sponsored by

royal opera house cinema season

la Boheme

Sunday, October 18 • 2 pm “A lost key and an accidental touch of cold hands in the dark – so begins one of the great romances of all opera, told in vivid detail in this classic production.” – Royal Opera House. Giacomo Puccini’s heartbreaking opera, La bohème, comes to the big screen as part of the Arden Theatre’s new Cinema Series. In one of the Royal Opera House’s most beloved stagings, John Copley’s 1974 production works its familiar magic one last time as 1830s Bohemian Paris is brought to life in a masterpiece of realism.

Experience the touching story of two ill-fated lovers: Rodolfo, a penniless poet, and Mimì, a seamstress – who after a chance meeting on Christmas Eve, fall passionately in love. Their happiness, however, is threatened when Rudolfo learns Mimì is gravely ill. Painfully aware that he cannot afford the medicine she so desperately needs, Rudolfo leaves – only to be reunited at the tragic end. With memorable music and a love story drawn from everyday life, La bohème has captivated audiences around the world since it was first performed in London’s Covent Garden, in 1897. The Royal Opera House is set to replace Copley’s beloved version with a new staging in 2017. Sponsored by

pay homage to the legacy of Jake and Elwood Blues in the hippest, most authentic Blues Brothers tribute show ever to take the stage. In a sea of imitators, only one duo has been approved by the Belushi Estate and Dan Aykroyd to walk in the footsteps of legends – The Official Blues Brothers Revue. Performers Wayne Catania (aka Jake) and Kieron Lafferty (aka Elwood) strike the right balance of charisma, mayhem and music that continue to captivate audiences worldwide. A tribute to Chicago’s rich blues, gospel and soul music history, this live show captures all the infectious humour and unbridled energy from the pair’s original 1980 hit film with foot-stompin’ fun songs like Soul Man and Sweet Home Chicago.

“This show was off the hook! Everyone had a great time from 8-to-88 years old.” – Shiela Martin, CEO, Dunn Center for the Performing Arts, Rocky Mount, NC Sponsored by

SOLD OUT Sunday, October 25 • 1:00 pm & 7:30 pm Astronaut. Commander. Author. Musician.

Colonel Chris Hadfield is a Canadian icon. Whether above the clouds or below the sea, he’s done more to inspire the next generation of Starfleet commanders since Captain James T. Kirk boldly went “where no man has gone before.” Hadfield’s incredible journey started when he was a young boy on an Ontario corn farm dreaming of flying in space. Since then, he’s lived in a research vessel at the bottom of the ocean, escorted Soviet bombers out of Canadian airspace, commanded a spacecraft and performed a spacewalk. Blasting into history, Hadfield became the first Canadian Commander of the International Space Station in 2013, and the first Canadian to walk in space when he installed Canadarm2 in 2001. Now, for the first time on the Arden stage, he shares extraordinary stories from his New York Times Best Selling book, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth, inspiring others to make the impossible, possible. Hadfield’s broad appeal stems from his genuine down-to-earth nature. Appealing to even the youngest of earthlings, Canada’s space superstar used social media to share many breathtaking photos and musical guitar ditty’s while in space. His album Space Sessions, was just released on October 9.

sing-a-long-a

sound of music Friday, November 6 • 7:30 pm The Sound of Music is one of the most beloved films of all time and 50 years after its release date, it’s your turn to sing-a-long with Julie! Test your vocal range with countless other nuns, goat herders, baronesses, von Trapp family members and Julie Andrews look-a-likes – the possibilities are as endless as ‘the sunlight on a perfect Alpine day’. Much more than a screening of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s cinematic treasure, ‘sing-a-long-a’ Sound of Music is an unforgettable, interactive, family-friendly theatre experience. During the pre-film show, your host will lead you through a vocal warm-up, show you how to use your free fun pack throughout the films ‘magic moments’, suggest a myriad of hilarious heckling techniques and, of course, judge the ever-popular costume contest. So wave your edelweiss, hiss at the countess, bark at Rolf and, of course, cheer for Julie in the hills of St. Albert. And remember, you’re the star of the show – so join in as much or as little as you want. The first rule of a ‘sing-along-a’ is THERE ARE NO RULES!

Thursday, November 12 • 7:30 pm For Canadian Fringe Festival circuit master Chris Padgett, music – and undoubtedly, life – isn’t about the differences, it’s about the similarities. Alternating magically between six different stage personas, each from a different background and musical genre, the polished American musician/actor’s award-winning show, Six Guitars, is a jaw-dropper on every level.

From an accomplished bluesman to aspiring metalhead, Padgett celebrates the common note that binds each of his unforgettable character’s need to play music. Showcasing incredible versatility on his six-stringed instrument of choice, this chameleon-like performer’s six identities shift seamlessly between six different styles of music – country, jazz, blues, classical, folk and rock. Six Guitars indeed hits all the high notes with humorous and heartfelt songs that alternate between standards, original compositions and audience-inspired improv tunes. And as if that weren’t enough, Padgett shares stories, nailing every body movement, facial expression and accent in hilarious fashion, to reveal how each character was introduced to the music they love. With ample numbers from multiple genres as well as elements of stand-up comedy and improvisation, there is truly something for everyone in this show.

“Six Guitars is nothing short of a storytelling masterpiece. The play will leave you doing two things: laughing until you cry, and lifting your jaw to its proper position.” – Edmonton Sun Sponsored by
