FRED EAGLESMITH Travelling Show ONTARIO

Thursday, October 6 & Friday, October 7 • 7:30 PM Never operating within anyone’s boundaries, country-roots singer-songwriter Fred Eaglesmith is a music veteran who continues to set the standard for indie artists everywhere. An outspoken leader and tireless troubadour in both the new folk and Americana movements, Eaglesmith continues to blaze his own colourful path rolling through towns across North America in a converted bio-fueled school bus. With an unparalleled drive and work ethic, Eaglesmith’s full-time travelling show, one of the last of its kind, plays over 300 gigs on the road each year – much to the delight of his loyal fan base of “Fredheads.” Backed by miles of experience, Eaglesmith has forged a distinguished career from the grassroots upwards through his uncompromising vision. Not one to shy away from taking chances with his music and arguably one of the most respected songwriters in the roots game today, Eaglesmith’s impressive list of accomplishments are as unique as the artist himself. In addition to garnering multiple international awards, his songs have been snatched up by some of the biggest names in Nashville such as Toby Keith, Alan Jackson and Miranda Lambert. His music has been featured in films and popular television scores – he even performed on the Late Show With David Letterman. But that’s as close to ‘show business’ as Eaglesmith wants to get. Instead of big stadiums and tour buses, he’s most at home sharing cutting-edge hits from his comprehensive discography with a few hundred of his closest friends in intimate spaces such as The Arden Theatre.

“Eaglesmith snarled out lyrics that underscore his overriding attitude that music and musicians ought to be cherished in the here-and-now and valued for the quality of their art, not the size of their bank accounts or TV ratings.”

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. TERRA

Lightfoot With Opening Guest

CAYLEY

Thomas ONTARIO & ALBERTA

Saturday, October 15 • 7:30 PM Hamilton’s Terra Lightfoot is a ferocious vocalist, songwriter and guitarist whose music commands attention. With songs that tap into raw emotions of love, lust and loneliness, her dreamy, yet gritty, interpretation of ‘roots-rock with attitude’ has critics alike singing the praises of this indisputable talent. Whether slow-burning soul ballads or hard-charging rock numbers, Lightfoot is an inspiration all her own with rich vocals, fiery guitar chops and hookheavy melodies. Recently touring across Canada as an opener for childhood idols Blue Rodeo, and performing on stages in France, the U.K. and across Canada, it’s hard to imagine Lightfoot took a while to gain confidence in her voice and even longer to sing her own songs – but we’re sure glad she did. Flexing new creative muscle as a songwriter, Lightfoot’s sophomore album, Every Time My Mind Runs Wild, challenged her to break out of her comfort zone – emerging as a confident and natural lead performer. Opening for Lightfoot is Edmonton native Cayley Thomas, a relative newcomer to the Canadian music scene but one whose career is on an impressive trajectory. After receiving national airplay with the 2013 release of a five-song EP, appearing at both the Edmonton and Canmore Folk Music Festivals and recovering from an unexpected loss of her voice, Thomas released her debut LP Weird Love – a diverse collection of vintage pop tracks inspired by her family, voice memos and travels. A multi-faceted performer, audiences are captivated by her vulnerable, yet sincere, live performances.

“Drawing from rock, soul and blues, Lightfoot is a monster talent that will be gracing the world’s largest festival stages in no time.” ~ PopMatters

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES • Sunday, October 30 • 1 PM ANNE OF GREEN GABLES : THE SEQUEL • Sunday, November 6 • 1 PM Based on the international best-selling novel by L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables is one of the finest examples of pure family entertainment ever produced. Filmed amidst the stunning scenery of Canada’s Prince Edward Island, this Emmy Award-winning production follows the captivating life of imaginative and fiery-tempered orphan Anne Shirley – from struggles as an adolescent to triumphs as a young woman. Mistakenly sent to live with elderly siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert on their family farm, Anne arrives as a precocious, romantic girl desperate to be loved and highly sensitive about her looks – especially her red hair. A wild imagination and far-fetched antics combine to cultivate disaster, everything from insulting the town matriarch to unknowingly getting a friend drunk, as Anne seemingly moves from one mishap to another. Now, she must use all of her wit and charm to convince her foster family to let her stay at Green Gables…even if she’s not a boy. Year: Director: Cast: Writers: Running Time: Rating:

FORTUNATEOnes NEWFOUNDLAND

Friday, November 4 • 7:30 PM As evident from their name, Newfoundland-based folk/pop duo Fortunate Ones are not ones to take success for granted. The Juno-nominated, Canadian Folk Music Awardwinning pair’s intense blend of acoustic-based tunes continues to earn them international praise and recognition. Growing up on opposite sides of the maritime island, a chance meeting in 2010 brought Catherine Allan and Andrew James O’Brien together and they have shared a stage ever since. While Catherine’s induction into the East Coast music scene was rapid – performing with Andrew and recording and touring extensively with Juno-Award winning musician Amelia Curran, it wasn’t until the pair was on tour in the U.K. did they recognize the direction their collaboration was taking. Appreciation shown by audiences bolstered their sense of purpose, and in 2013 the duo officially put a name to their music that had evolved to represent both of their sensibilities, skills and sounds – both Fortunate Ones indeed. The vulnerability and closeness between the pair is profound, performing with the sincerity of two people that truly live the songs they sing. Personal stories of hope, strength and heart are featured on their 2016 album, The Bliss. Creating an effortless connection and memorable experience with audiences wherever they go, Fortunate Ones bring tenderness and passion to their gorgeous harmonies, arrangements and lyrics.

“Fortunate Ones are fully contemporary, yet when you watch them you can’t help but feel you’re watching the ‘next in line’ of great Newfoundland entertainers.” ~ Tom Power, CBC Radio

QUARTANGO: Body and Soul QUEBEC & ONTARIO

Saturday, November 5 • 7:30 PM Montréal’s Quartango has been sharing their passion for tango since the release of their first album 30 years ago. The internationally-renowned, critically-acclaimed and Juno Award-winning ensemble’s breath-taking blend of contemporary jazz and traditional tango, mixed with elements of classical music, has been performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages – including Carnegie Hall. Accomplished and classically trained musicians Antoine Bell (violin), René Gosselin (doublebass), Jonathan Goldman (bandoneon) and Stéphane Aubin (piano) evoke deep emotion with their fascinating mixture of pathos and passion resulting in a musical tapestry full of sensuality and wry humour. Now, driven by a desire to make an even closer connection with their audience, Quartango has teamed up with Argentine tango dancers Roxana and Fabian Belmonte in a feast for both the eyes and ears. Classical works, jazz standards, Celtic melodies and popular tunes set the scene for this brilliant performance of intricate and sensual dance steps. From the first beat to the very last note, Quartango pulses with an energy that is nothing less than explosive. Dancers and musicians share their passion for the tango in an exceptional performance where melody and movement are in perfect harmony – creating a memorable experience sure to bring down the house!

“Each member is a star on their own, not only as virtuosos but also as human beings.”

AOIFE O’Donovan Wednesday, November 9 • 7:30 PM

*Bonus Performance

American singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan is an artist whose unforgettable voice and music moves audiences on a deeper level. Kindness and sorrow find balance in her songs that inject themselves into the souls of listeners across the globe. Armed with a rare and beautiful gift and an innate ability to write and tell stories of poignancy and intense meaning, O’Donovan further solidifies her career as a solo artist with the 2016 release of her sophomore album In The Magic Hour. Partly inspired by the memory of her grandfather who hailed from a small coastal Irish village where O’Donovan spent magical summers as a child, the 10-song album is a collection of tales steeped in family history and memories mixed with adult revelations. O’Donovan’s honeyed vocals coupled with airy harmonies cast a spectrum of emotion as she expands past her roots in folk and bluegrass and into brave, exciting, and fresh territory. For O’Donovan, who knew she wanted to be a musician at the age of five, the “magic hour” is that moment of the day when anything seems possible. Releasing her first solo recording in 2010 after spending nearly a decade playing in the celebrated progressive string band, Crooked Still, that she helped found, Boston-raised O’Donovan continues to collaborate with many notable and stylistically wide-ranging musicians, including Chris Thile, Sarah Jarosz, Sarah Watkins and Yo-Yo Ma.

“Gorgeous…The sparse-but-intricate arrangements speak to O’Donovan’s conservatory training, but are delicately shaded with her pristine voice and smears of electric guitar or wisps of fiddle.” ~ Rolling Stone

JAYME STONE’S Lomax Project ONTARIO

Saturday, November 12 • 7:30 PM Jayme Stone, a two-time Juno Award-winning banjoist and composer, makes music inspired by sounds from around the world. A consummate collaborator, he has spent two years unearthing musical artifacts and bringing together some of North America’s top roots musicians in an effort to revive and reinvent traditional folk music. Delving deep into songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax, Stone’s centennial tribute is a unique blend of both old and new. Along with bandmates Moira Smiley, Sumaia Jackson and Joe Phillips, 19 carefully chosen songs are featured in the album that reflects the diversity of Lomax’s vast audio legacy. Considered one of the most compelling recordings of recent years, Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project introduces audiences to the rich history of everyday folk music and features Bahamian sea shanties, ancient Appalachian ballads, fiddle tunes and songs collected from both well-known musicians and everyday folk like sea captains, cowhands and fisherman. Folk music’s connection to the past is at its core and in the words of Alan Lomax “folk singing has more than nine lives.” Come discover this particular version of life and pay beautiful tribute to the nostalgia of a bygone era.

“It places new wonders alongside old favorites, for a listening experience that’s fresh and fun no matter how familiar you are with Lomax’s collection.” ~ Huffington Post Patrons are invited to stay for a post-concert conversation with Jayme Stone hosted by folkwaysAlive!
