What a pleasure it is to be back at The Arden Theatre! I’d like to send a huge thanks to Neil LeGrandeur for doing such an excellent job programming a season that truly is Yours To Discover. Over the past year, I’ve made some discoveries of my own, many I never thought possible, as I embarked on an exciting new adventure – motherhood. However, one of my best discoveries was how much I missed the theatre and all of you! We have lots to catch up on and I can’t wait to hear about the artistic endeavours you’ve made over the past year and performances you’d like to see on our stage next season. Find me in the lobby or send an email to cnorth@stalbert.ca with your suggestions because The Arden Theatre is Yours to Discover.

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. Friday, October 20 | 7:30 PM | $32

Edmonton-born singer-songwriter Samantha Martin is a five-time Maple Blues

Award nominee who describes her musical style as “roots ‘n’ roll.” Her voice is reminiscent of strong female vocalists such as Bonnie Tyler, Lucinda Williams and Etta James. Martin anchors her rich, raspy vocals into a combination of gospel and delta blues that rings with clarity and honesty. Adding precision and power on backup through tight harmonies and distinctive guitar tones is Martin’s band Delta Sugar. Martin first discovered the power of her voice while auditioning for a fourth-grade class production of The Sound of Music, singing “My Favourite Things.” She began writing her own songs in her twenties and released her first CD, Back Home, in 2008. Martin later created the band Samantha Martin and the Haggard, which later evolved into Delta Sugar by spring 2014. Together, these gifted musicians create a powerful sound that mixes gospel and grit. The group’s 2016 Edmonton Folk Music Festival performance was an instant hit. Their 2015 debut album, Send the Nightingale, captures the energy and emotion of these undeniable stars who are on the rise.

i got Rhythm:

the science Of song CINEMA

Sunday, October 22 | 2 PM $20 Adult | $15 Student From church hymns and protest chants to rock concerts and singing in the shower,

music has always been an integral part of the human experience. But why? For decades, scientists have been searching for answers to this intriguing question. Now, I Got Rhythm: The Science of Song, a documentary from CBC’s The Nature of Things, focuses on ground-breaking research conducted in music laboratories and universities in Canada and abroad. Based on interviews with scientists in fields as diverse as archaeology, cardiology and neuroscience, this one-hour Edmonton-made film explores the intricate relationship between music, and our minds and bodies. Written by Helen Metella and narrated by David Suzuki, the documentary reveals incredible findings such as people who listen to heavy metal music are less hostile and choir members experience heart rate synchronization when they sing. I Got Rhythm: The Science of Song garnered nominations in five categories at the 2017 Alberta Film & Television Rosie Awards, and won top honour for Best Documentary Over 30 Minutes. Connie Edwards, the film’s director and producer, will lead an intriguing post-film questionand-answer session. Also, an Edmonton-based Taiko drum group, Kita No Taiko, will perform before the screening.

“A fascinating new Nature of Things documentary created by two Edmontonians reveals music’s role in human evolution.” – Fish Griwkowsky, Edmonton Journal

tHe small glories P ahi FOLK | SOUL

Friday, October 27 | 7:30 PM | $36 The Small Glories, last year’s hit at The Arden Theatre, was so well received that the duo graces our brochure cover this season. The serendipitous folk music collaboration between singer-songwriters Cara Luft and JD Edwards began as a one-time union in Winnipeg in October 2012. Their partnership produced musical chemistry that each quickly realized was worth maintaining. Luft and Edwards consider themselves a “study in contrasts” between her folk flavour and his rock spirit. The juxtaposition creates a brilliant balance. The lively pair combines flowing harmonies and guitar flair with straightforward, sometimes spiritual lyrics, to create a distinctive Prairie Americana vibe. Their 2016 debut album Wondrous Traveler flows from melancholy introspection to joyful lightness. Opening act AHI (pronounced “eye”) is one of Canada’s top emerging singer-songwriters. He skillfully blends soul, folk and rock into timeless songs lifted along by his distinctive gritty voice. He has toured extensively across North America and Europe. CBC Radio One named his EP, Indie Soul, one of the top 10 records of 2014. He has won awards from the Songwriters Association of Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Nashville Songwriters Association International. Most recently, AHI earned Folk Music Ontario’s 2017 Rising Star Award.

“There is no shortage of duos out there, but on this showing, The Small Glories have more clout than most.” – Acoustic Magazine UK “No matter where his journey takes him, AHI’s undeniable gift continues to turn heads and capture hearts.” – Canadian Music Café

Indoor Flora and Fauna sculptures offer visual respite for seniors St. Albert’s Art in Public Places program recently added Quilter’s Garden and Sturgeon River Roundel to the newly refurbished Red Willow Place – a 17,000 square foot facility that provides vital programming and services to people aged 50 and over in St. Albert and surrounding area. Created by Red Deer artists and avid gardeners Dawn Detarando and Brian McArthur, and in consultation with the St. Albert Public Art Advisory Committee and St. Albert Seniors Association, the two pieces represent a celebration of both the area and its senior’s community. Quilter’s Garden, which depicts two ladies first quilting, then producing rows of a vegetable garden, is about collaboration and the many decades of learning and growing that one experiences throughout a lifetime. “We wanted a piece that connected the landscape with the passing on of traditions, knowledge and telling of stories,” explains McArthur. Sturgeon River Roundel beautifully combines local animal species with natural growth. “We wanted to bring the flora and fauna that surrounds Red Willow Place inside for people to enjoy throughout the four seasons,” says Detarando. Quilter’s Garden and Sturgeon River Roundel were unveiled in 2016 and became part of the City of St. Albert’s 300-plus collection of sculptures, murals and paintings. “We believe that public art brings people together, which leads to a healthier community,” she says. “We hope these pieces connect people to the area, uplift their spirits and allow for visual respite and a sense of wonder and enlightenment,” adds McArthur. Local public art projects are supported through the City of St. Albert’s Percent for Public Art Policy, where the City dedicates one per cent of the budgeted cost of all eligible capital projects to fund the accession of public art. This fund provides new inspirational artworks that speak of St. Albert’s legacy and commitment to build a sense of community and belonging. Nashville hurricane COUNTRY | THEATRE

Thursday, November 2 | 7:30 PM | $30 From North American Fringe Festival legend Chase Padgett comes a one-man masterpiece that mixes live music, storytelling and theatre. Padgett skillfully weaves the tale of Henry Waltrip, an unparalleled guitar virtuoso in the Deep South during the late 1970s. Nicknamed The Nashville Hurricane, Waltrip is poised to take the music industry by storm… until he vanishes from the scene as mysteriously as he arrived. We find out why through comedic and dramatic anecdotes told by his professional mentor, his loving mother, his sinister manager and the Hurricane himself — all played with aplomb by Padgett, who also co-wrote the script with Jay Hopkins. Threaded through the story are songs that showcase Padgett’s ability to stir audiences with his vocal scope and fluid mastery over the guitar.

Nashville Hurricane was an Edmonton Fringe Festival hit in 2016, receiving a Best of Fest Award and stellar reviews. Padgett is a professional actor and musician who early in his career worked in various comedy and music capacities, such as writing custom songs for special events at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. His first solo show, 6 Guitars, grew into one of the most successful shows ever to tour on the North American Fringe Festival circuit, including a sell-out performance during The Arden Theatre’s 2015-2016 season. Padgett continues to perform both shows for enthralled audiences across the continent.

“A marvel of storytelling… the audience leaped to a standing ovation.” – Calgary Herald 20

birds Of chicago FOLK | POP

Friday, November 3 | 7:30 PM | $35

Married duo JT Nero and Allison Russell are at the heart of Birds

of Chicago and its unique brand of “secular gospel,” where passionate, powerful vocals complement simple, moving folk arrangements. Russell’s clear, strong voice and Nero’s songwriting prowess and innate feel for instrumentation form the foundation of the group. Their sound, sometimes called “rock and roll poetry,” reflects a philosophy that even in our busy modern world, beautiful words and music have the power to evoke universal emotion. Both musicians previously had successful independent music careers. Nero was the frontman of JT and the Clouds, a soul/roots group out of Chicago with a solid fan base. Russell, who hails from Montréal, was the driving force and lead vocalist behind the critically acclaimed Canadian roots group Po’ Girl. When Nero began writing songs for Russell, their undeniable chemistry inevitably led to Birds of Chicago taking flight. In addition to vocals and writing, Nero contributes on guitar and percussion, with Russell on clarinet and strings. Since their debut self-titled album in 2012, the band has spent over 200 nights a year on tour, giving their performances a road-perfected sturdiness that thrills audiences. Their latest album, Real Midnight, was released in 2016, and produced by Grammy Award-winner Joe Henry. It continues to garner critical praise for the duo.

LATIN | SOUL | ROCK

Saturday, November 4 | 7:30 PM | $38

Alex*Cuba’s mystique is growing. His eclectic Cuban-influenced music

with Canadian flair has earned him significant notice at home and abroad. Between 2006 and 2016, he received five Juno Award nominations for World Music Album of the Year – winning in 2006 and 2008. He was also nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the Grammys in 2010 and 2015. Each award and nomination further affirms his unmatched skill in world music. Born in Cuba, the singer-songwriter learned to play guitar from his father, a respected musician and music teacher. In 1999, Cuba moved to British Columbia, where he still lives with his wife, Sarah, who manages Caracol, their independent record label. Cuba recorded his first album with his twin brother Adonis under the name The Puentes Brothers. His latest record, Lo Unico Constante, explores and updates filin music. Filin, when translated means feeling, is a romantic jazz-influenced, melody-driven style that has roots in Havana and was popular from the 1940s to 1960s. In English or Spanish, Cuba’s songs are compelling exchanges that effortlessly groove through soul, funk, jazz and pop styles. Audiences find his guitar rhythms and sweet melodies enticing to follow and impossible to forget.

“Alex Cuba is adept at filling his music with colors, textures and temperatures of the different worlds he thrives in by using funky horns, tender acoustic guitars and thoughtful lyrics.”
