Message from the Presenter
With every changing season, we have a chance to
reflect on the time and experiences that have passed and build excitement for what’s to come. Each season, it is my biggest hope that you get to make lifelong memories in our theatre and can escape the everyday hustle and bustle of life, even for just a moment. This season, we have so much to be excited about – music, dance, theatre, cirque, cinema and family programming – there’s something for everyone! I’m thrilled to welcome back patron favourites like Skerryvore, The Ennis Sisters, Sing-a-long-a Grease, as well as introduce sure-fire new favourites, Irish Mythen, Shakura S’Aida and Steve Poltz. Here’s to another remarkable year of memory-making! Caitlin North Professional Programming Presenter, Community Services, City of St. Albert
It is important to honour and acknowledge that we are on First Nation traditional land of Treaty 6 and the homeland of the Métis people of Alberta. We acknowledge that we, as Treaty People, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, share the mutual responsibilities for stewardship and sustainability of our environment, cultures and community within this beautiful land. How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. See “Kenney,” page 7

Reuben and the Dark ROCK/POP/FOLK
Tuesday, October 29 7:30 PM • From $43 Calgary’s Reuben and the Dark is a collection of five multiinstrumentalists and vocalists led by Reuben Bullock. The group makes chilling, emotive folk and soul – driven by dark, introspective lyrics that explore the duality of misery and joy. Boasting a rare chemistry between all members who hail from across Western Canada, Reuben and the Dark has emerged organically from Canada’s stellar independent scene on the strength of often anthemic compositions that translate language and emotion into song with haunting clarity. Their 2018 sophomore album, Arms of a Dream, comes after years of extensive touring and is chock-full of tightly coiled verses, thundering choruses, soaring synths and chanting vocals. Flamenco Legends by Javier Limón – The Paco de Lucía Project LATIN/JAZZ/WORLD
Thursday, October 31 7:30 PM • From $65 The Paco de Lucía Project, created by 10-time Latin Grammy Award-winner Javier Limón, reassembles the original band that toured with legendary flamenco guitarist, Paco de Lucía, for the last decade of his career. Paco de Lucía was widely considered to be the world’s premier flamenco guitarist and Spain’s greatest musical export. Throughout his 50-year career, he performed and recorded with musical legends such as Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana, and had a revolutionary influence on flamenco music both as a composer and musician. While his unexpected passing in 2014 seemed to mark the end of his group – it, thankfully, did not. Limón, a long-time collaborator and producer of Paco de Lucía, uses the secrets of flamenco to create an experience that not only honours his legacy, but also paves a new path for the future of the art form.
