performance of Shrek the Musical, a play that explores the timeless theme of not judging a book by its cover and accepting people for who they are. The St. Albert Children’s Theatre is widely respected for its theatre program that enjoys the participation of over 300 children annually. Since 1981, more than 4,000 youth have taken part in their productions. While some have gone on to careers in the performing arts, without a doubt, they have all benefited from the experience, acquiring lifelong leadership skills. I extend a special thank you to the parents and families of the youth involved in this production and the many volunteers for your ongoing commitment to cultivating an enduring love of theatre arts in our children. I have loved the first Shrek movie since
the moment I saw it, and I am not ashamed to say I have watched it many times over since. Shrek is not your average Fairytale fare – the Princess is “cursed”, the villain is “short” tempered and thanks to the friendship of a talking donkey, the ugly green ogre turns out to be the hero. On the surface the obvious lesson this tale teaches us is that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. But if you look a little deeper Shrek has many more positive messages that are applicable especially in today’s culture specifically in regards to building self-esteem, learning compassion for others and accepting the good influence of friends rather than the non-stop media promotion of unreasonable expectations.
Our culture is changing so rapidly that everything is becoming disposable. I truly believe the more technically advantaged our culture is the more socially primitive we can become. Are we all slowly turning into ogres? This holiday season I encourage you all to turn off your technology. Call your friends, meet someone for coffee, sit down for a family meal and have a family game night. Challenge yourself to connect and give a smile to a stranger. Positive face-to-face interaction does wonders for the soul. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in creating this wonderful production – it is truly an honour to work with you. It’s the 2013 St. Albert Children’s Theatre’s production of Shrek The Musical. The Friends of St. Albert Children’s Theatre Society are very pleased to welcome you to this winter production. The mission of St. Albert Children’s Theatre is to support the promotion, education and exploration of theatre arts for youth and its contribution to community leadership. The Friends are a team of volunteers who work collaboratively with the City of St. Albert to enable young artists an opportunity to experience the many extraordinary and professional opportunities that involvement in a theatre company provides through fundraising activities. These activities help offset production costs and pay for the rental of rehearsal space for our talented cast. The teamwork, enthusiasm and dedication of the directors, staff, technicians, Arden volunteers, parents and performers together create an incredible and memorable production. The society offers a sincere thank you to all these amazing individuals. We would also like to thank all of you for your continued support of this program.
