MAYOR
Welcome to today’s performance of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. This beautiful story teaches us to embrace life and cherish each moment we have – what a perfect sentiment as we enter the holiday season.
It’s hard to believe that what started as a youth drama program to fill those long summer days, would grow into such a reputable and widely respected children’s theatre troupe. Much of St. Albert Children’s Theatre’s success can be attributed to staff, parents, Board members and dedicated volunteers, and their tireless commitment to cultivate a lifelong love of theatre arts in our youth. I believe that encouraging our children to participate in the arts helps them grow confidence and develop leadership skills, commitment, dedication, team participation and respect – skills that will serve them well in all facets of life. We are pleased to have such a wonderfully talented group in St. Albert and encourage you to attend future productions and/or participate in performing arts programming offered through the City. Anyone of any age can get involved in performing arts. Now sit back and enjoy the show! Cathy Heron Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City

The Friends of St. Albert Children’s Theatre Society is very pleased
to welcome you to the winter production of a classic family favourite, Disney’s The Little Mermaid. We encourage you to put away your snarfblats and dingelhoppers and take a peek at life under the sea. The musical crustacean Sebastian inspires us with the wise words; “You’ve got your own style, now let it shine through and remember no matter what, you got to be you.” Let yourself be inspired as you watch the fabulous cast bring life to the stage and music to your ears. The teamwork, enthusiasm and dedication of the directors, technicians, performers, staff, Arden volunteers, and parents come together to create this memorable production. After months of hard work and countless hours rehearsing, singing, dancing and encouraging each other, we are sure your lives will be touched by this fantastically fishy performance. We would also like to thank you, the audience, for your continued support of this wonderful program. We invite you now to sit back and enjoy your musical theatre experience.

DIRECTOR AND CHOREOGRAPHER THE
Disney movies have been a big part of our lives. When we were kids Sunday night at 6:00pm sharp was a night that most families hunkered down in front of the television to watch the Wonderful World of Disney. The Little Mermaid is one of my personal favourites and began what I believe was the ‘pinnacle’ of the contemporary Disney animated movies – Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King and Aladdin. It’s interesting that these four titles have been the first of the brand-new live action Disney movies in the last few years. One may question if The Little Mermaid is still a valid story to be told in our current social climate – girl meets boy – girl gives up life as she knows it to be with boy etc. To us though, the heart of the story is much bigger than that. The true message is just as relevant if not more so than it was when it was first produced. Ariel is trying to find her place in the world – somewhere she feels is ‘right’ to her. She started gathering ‘human paraphenicular’ and yearned for life on land long before Eric was part of the story. At the end of the day that’s what we’re all trying to do – to find a way to be comfortable in our own skin and live life as our true self. We are glad you’ve taken some time with your family to come to the theatre. We hope you enjoy our offering of this classic story. Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season.

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. The creation of St. Albert Children’s Theatre began when thirtysix children were involved in the production of THE HOBBIT.
