Message from
the mayor Welcome to today’s performance –
It’s A Wonderful Life and ELF The Musical JR., a double feature of two holiday classics. It’s hard to believe that what started as a youth drama program to fill those long summer days, would grow into such a reputable and widely respected children’s theatre troupe. Much of St. Albert Children’s Theatre’s success can be attributed to staff, parents, Board members and dedicated volunteers, and their tireless commitment to cultivate a lifelong love of theatre arts in our youth. I believe that encouraging our children to participate in the arts helps them grow confidence and experience leadership, commitment, dedication, team participation and respect – skills that will serve them well in all facets of life. We are pleased to have such a wonderfully talented group in St. Albert and encourage you to attend future productions and/or participate in performing arts programming offered through the City (often taught by St. Albert Children’s Theatre alumni). With adult acting classes now in the mix, anyone of any age can get involved in performing arts. Now sit back and enjoy the show! Cathy Heron Mayor, City of St. Albert, The Botanical Arts City
Message from the friends of
St. Albert children’s theatre The Friends of St. Albert Children’s Theatre Society
is very pleased to welcome you as we start this festive season with two delightful Christmas stories, It’s a Wonderful Life and ELF The Musical JR. “Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives…” Although only part of a famous line courtesy of Clarence Odbody in the classic It’s A Wonderful Life, these few words embody the sentiment of all involved in this year’s Winter Production. The teamwork, enthusiasm and dedication of the directors, technicians, performers, staff, Arden volunteers, and parents come together to create this memorable production with every individual maintaining an important role and drawing on the support of another. After months of hard work and countless hours rehearsing, singing, dancing, helping each other and encouraging each other, we are sure your lives will be touched by this magical experience. We would also like to thank you, the audience, for your continued support of this wonderful program. We invite you to sit back, enjoy and remember “the best way to spread Christmas cheer, is singing loud for all to hear.” ST. ALBERT CHILDREN’S THEATRE 2017

We really like Seuss and we love to rhyme So we’re gonna do it just one more time This year is different, the old and the new Two Christmas traditions in one package for you. The first story’s poignant, you may need a hanky The second is crazy, toe-tappin’ and campy They both have a message, a moral per se It’s just what we need in the times of today Be kind to each other – your worth it is great So share through the season and celebrate The holiday brings us together, like glue Let’s carry that feeling the whole year through Love to our cast and our crew and to all We all worked so hard yet we had such a ball! We wish you and yours a season that’s bright Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. hirty-six years ago, in 1981, the City of St. Albert initiated a theatre project to add to their summer activity program. The creation of St. Albert Children’s Theatre began when thirty-six children were involved in the musical production of THE HOBBIT. The Friends of St. Albert Children’s Theatre, a non-profit society committed to the support and enrichment of young people’s drama, was formed thereafter in 1984. We hope that you will enjoy this production and continue to support the St. Albert Children’s Theatre program. • Rags to Riches (2000) • Cinderella (2000) • Charlotte’s Web (2001) • Guys and Dolls (2001) • The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood (2002) • Footloose (2002) • Pinocchio (2003) • Bye Bye Birdie (2003) • Zoom! New artworKs offer
sense of discovery and movement St. Albert’s Art in Public Places program recently added In Motion, a collection of pieces representing recreation activities that happen in and around Riel Park, to the newly constructed amenities building – part of Larry Olexiuk Field.
With artistic work that has appeared everywhere from the cover of Maclean’s magazine and a John Grisham novel, to a fine art gallery in New York, renowned Alberta Métis artist William Frymire strives to create meaningful public art that is environmentally sustainable and reflective of its surroundings. “Public art should not be transplanted into a community, but rather grow from it,” he says. In Motion, which adorns an exterior meeting room door and panels above four dressing room doors, depicts not only soccer, football, rugby, BMX racing, rodeo, running and biking activities that are commonplace in the area, but also the “common thread of movement which is an expression of our body and spirit.” “I’ve used wave-like shapes with an upward angle for the artistic panels because of the park’s proximity to water and the positive uplifting feeling it evokes,” explains Frymire. The artworks are also engraved with patterns and images of the various activities such as textures of rugby and soccer balls in motion and chalkboard diagrams of football plays. “I wanted the viewer at first to be drawn to the colours and shapes as the new building it is on is quite monochromatic. Then upon closer inspection to see all the engravings and try to decipher what it is they are looking at. I like that there is a sense of discovery about it,” says Frymire who drew everything by hand. Unveiled in October, 2017, In Motion became part of the City of St. Albert’s 300-plus collection of sculptures, murals and paintings. Local public art projects are supported through the City of St. Albert’s Percent for Public Art Program, where the City dedicates one per cent of the budgeted cost of all eligible capital projects to fund the accession of public art. This fund provides new inspirational artworks that speak of St. Albert’s legacy and commitment to build a sense of community and belonging. To learn more about Art in Public Places, download the CultivateArt App or visit stalbert.ca.
